Mail Re-Opens After Quitting

When I quit mail, the application re-opens automatically. This results in no messages being displayed and the only way to exit is by force quitting. Any suggestions on stopping this as it's driving me up the wall!
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

You probably have a piece of software such as a Dashboard widget, or a plug-in, or a system utility, or iCal reminders, or something like that, that requires Mail to be running for whatever it does.
> This results in no messages being displayed and the only way to exit
is by force quitting.
Not sure what you mean here. Are you saying that this only happens if you don’t open Mail manually yourself? Also, can you use Mail even though it doesn’t display any messages, or does it freeze immediately, or what? More info, please.

Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.

If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:

  • Safari 5 Opens after Quit

Every time I boot up my Mac, and use Safari, everything goes well until I quit the app. About five seconds after quit, the icon starts bouncing again, and starts back up. I've tried rebooting, reinstalling Safari, and even wiping my entire OS clean! Still no stopping it. This problem really bothers me, and I want to know why this is happening. It also happens with Firefox, but I couldn't replicate the problem with Google Chrome.

    HI,
After you erased and reinstalled the Mac OS X, if you didn't update the system software, that could be the result of both Safari and Firefox quitting.
    Click your Apple Menu/Software Updates.
If your system is already up to date, Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: *Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit* or have performance issues

  • Email icon won't open after quitting mail

After quoting mail, the mailbox won't open.  Need help please.

We need you to help us help you. What Apple product? What OS version?

  • What do I do to resolve an ongoing problem with the MAIL "new messages sound".?  If I reboot the iMAC and keep the mail app open after a number of messages come in the NEW MESSAGE Sound quits. I have to reboot the machine to get it back.

New Messages sound quits after several messages have arrived. I've tried several passes at resolving but nothing I have done seems to work. Sometimes I have to reboot the imac several times to get the New Messages Sounds back. Everything else works. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall the OS and that seems foolhardy.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

  • Mail wont open after upating OS 10.8.5

After updating my OS to 10.8.5 my mail opens but will not load.
I have looked for my mail folders to rename them, as others have noted. I cannot located the mail folders at all, anywhere not in the services subdirector, the cache subdirectory, and when I search for 'mail' on my computer it finds nothing but mail downloads.
The only thing I can find now, is to fix it reinstall OS.
I just want to know before I do this, is there anything else I can try?
    Thanks

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mail wont open after servicing

I had the Macbook serviced at the Arden Fair.  The genius "cleaned up" the laptop by pressing option and inserting the install disk at the same time. It took about 45 minutes.  Now my Mail application will not open.  Apple states that I must pay 49.99 for them to help.  Please let me know if you can help.

  • Why won't my Mail app. open after updating to 10.4.4?

I updated my powerbook G4 to 10.4.4. After restarting Apple's Mail application refused to open from my dock. I then tried to launch it by double clicking on the icon in the application folder. It pops up a dialog box which says, "The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple." When I click on the 'Reopen' button the dialog box goes away and another one pops up which says, "The application Mail quit unexpectedly after it was opened. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Try Again to temporarily restore the application's default settings and open it again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple." When I click on the 'Try Again' button a new window opens called 'New Account' which 'guides' me through the necessary steps to set up my mail account. When I click 'continue' a new window opens which asks for my user name and also my .Mac account password. Once I enter this info I click on the 'continue' button and it logs into .Mac and gives me an Account Summary so it's acting like everthing is okay until I press the 'continue' button and then I get the same error message as before: "The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."
I downloaded the freeware program called Preferential Treatment by Jonathan Nathan in hopes it would remove a damaged Mail .plist file. No dice - no problems with Mail prefrence files according to this software. I'm at a loss of what to do next. I read that someone else had a similiar problem - I don't know what to do next. Any help would be really appreciated as I use my Mail program constantly. Thanks! Oh, also when entering this Post and describing my system the OS menu provided does not allow me to select OS 10.4.4. I'm sure that will be udated soon.

  • Mail Keeps Restarting After Quit

Just installed Leopard yesterday. 24 inch iMac. Mail keeps restarting. After I quit, keeps restarting. It's not set to open at login. It is the only application doing it.

WOW, that did work. I was having the same problem and shut off Soonr and that fixed it. Now if someone can tell me why it is putting new mail in the spam folder under the “One My Mac” folder

  • Mail wont open after installing 10.5.2 updates

My mail in my profile works fine. The mail in my wife's profile will not open. There is a ? over the mail icon on the dock. This started after loading software updates today.

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

  • Mail not opening after migration to new macbook pro

    Hello all,
I recently transferred all of my files using migration assistant from a powerbook G4 to a Macbook Pro and now mail will not open. It will show up in the bar underneath the screen but it won't display anything and it won't quit. Anyone have any solutions?

Without having to mess with plists, or messing with other arcane buried folders, this solution for me in migrating from a G4 to a Mini.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8843200&#8843200
Simple. Move the ~/Library/Mail folder out and back in. Read the thread for the specific order. It's easy and save me tons of heartache.

  • ITunes re-opens after quitting

    Hi,
Well, the title says it all really. Lately, when I quit iTunes it re-opens, then when I quit it again it's fine.
Anybody had this problem before? What can I do to fix it?
    Thanks
    iLee

    Hi
After reading a few other posts that mentioned widgets, I've finally tracked this problem down to a widget I recently installed. Last week I installed two lyric finder widgets, Harmonic and iglyric, plus an artwork finder called amazon art.
I uninstalled each one, and found it was the Amazon Art widget that was re-opening iTunes. It's this one here: http://www.widget-foundry.com/widgets/amazonart.htm
So if you have that too, you might wanna check it out.
    Cheers

  • Mail launches itself after quit

Recently I have noticed that Mail re-launches itself within seconds after I quit it, and also at startup. I rarely log off or reboot since I'm on a desktop so AFAIK the culprit could be anything I did in the days or weeks since I last quit Mail. It's not set to launch under my account's Login Items, nor is there anything under /Library/StartupItems, and I have never used email notifications in iCal - those are the only possibilities I am aware of; I don't where else to look. Yet something is causing it to launch - any other ideas?

Never mind - I found the cause of this. I am running GeekTool and icalBuddy, which I am using to display flagged messages on my desktop. Didn't occur to me that Mail had to be running to do this.

  • Mail not opening after reinstalling Lion using Time Machine

I did a fresh reinstall of Lion using Time Machine and not Mail won't open.
It says that mail cannot be opened because of a problem and suggests I contact the developer or possibly reinstall app.
I've looked around for solution but none of the ones out there work.

    Indiogdp,
There may a simple answer for you. It was for me. Make sure that Mail (mine is 5.2) is running in 32 bit mode. To check, go to Applications, right click on Mail and select Get Info (command i will do it too). Then find the checkbox next to "Run in 32 bit mode," and select it. Although you probably don't need to leave the info box open I did until I satisfied myself that it worked.
    Hope this helps.
