Mail, receiving but not sending

Mail is playing up after I installed a new Snow Leopard system. I can receive but not send. As far as I can tell I have all the right settings. My (don't tell anyone) PC laptop works perfectly. Can anyone tell me where I should be looking?

Open Mail and look in Mail menu item "Window". In the drop-down select "Connection Doctor" and before checking in Connection Doctor look at the bottom of it's pane and show the read out print, then click on check server connection. This way you can see what the server is telling your Mac. Maybe you didn't set up the SMTP server settings correctly.

  • HT1277 Mac Mail receiving but not sending. smtp not working

I have been using Mac Mail with my Gmail account without any trouble for the last few years and just for the last 2-3 weeks I cannot send any e-mails. I am receiving without any problems, but no matter what I do it won't send, not even an e-mail to myself. My Calendar is set up to send my notifications and those won't even go. I have verified my settings (time and time again), I deleted and reset-up my account, in the last two weeks I have done everything I can, but can't figure it out so I am getting kind of desperate. I am sure that it is something to do with smtp but all of my settings for that are right too (in accordance to the Gmail and Apple sites). What I have done is just read and responded to my e-mails (when I do it offline) and then I have to log into my gmail account and copy/paste ALL of my e-mails manually, which I am sure you can imagine is extremely inefficient. Thank you to anyone who can help!
Running Mac OS X 10.6.8 with Mail 4.5 and accessing Gmail

Here is a screen shot too, not that it says much, but this is what I always get, no matter the settings (since they are all correct! OH! I guess I should also mention that I currently live in Africa and that I am using my Blackberry Bold as a modem to get internet on my computer, but I have been doing that since last year and never had a problem until now.
Also, I did just very recently (as in a couple weeks ago), insert a new modem to my computer to try a second method of getting the internet on my computer other than my phone, and it didn't really work so I am back to just the phone again... would that simple installation have anything to do with Mail not sending e-mail? I can't imagine that it would, But I have seen stranger things.

  • Mail receives but not send

    Hi,
I can receive mail in Mail.app but it won't let me reply at all, nor forward.
If I click 'Reply' or 'Reply-All' absolutely nothing happens - no opening of email to type a reply. If I forward an email it sometimes opens an email but I cannot send anything at all.
At the moment I'm using Thunderbird which I don't really like but it's better than nothing as I have quite a few email accts in everyday use.
    Can anyone help?
    Helen

    Hello Helen,
Who is your eMail provider, the part after the @ sign? Is it POP or IMAP?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.

  • IPhone 4 Mail receiving but not sending

Hi all ... I have seen a couple of other posts on this topic but my situation seems a little different, so here goes for a new thread.
I have just set up my new iPhone 4 32GB, including my POP/SMTP email account. Receiving mail worked instantly but I have not yet managed to get Sending mail to work.
First time I set up the account I did not enter any username or password for the SMTP server as these are indicated as "optional". Kept getting a message saying that iPhone could not connect to the SMTP server, so went back in and added the username and password (same as POP server). iPhone then took an age to connect but seemed to be sending mail (displayed a "Sending mail" message + progress bar at the bottom of the screen). However sending mail systematically failed, with the unsent messages remaining in the Outbox.
Tried deleting and reinstalling the account - this time added the username and password for the SMTP account at the outset. Am now getting the "connection to the SMTP server failed" messages again !!!
Any further suggestions as to what I might try to troubleshoot this would be much appreciated ... this is a basic POP/SMTP mail account that I have been using for many years without issues.
As you'll have gathered my technical know how is near-zero!
    many thanks in advance

Hello Dave. I'm not far from you - I live in Fleet.
I think the difference between your situation and mine is that I'm using an email service from a cable provider (Virgin Media) whereas yours is from Google (Gmail). Virgin Media appear to have put restrictions on using their SMTP server via other means than their own network. Gmail's network is the internet, and no restrictions for accessing them via a 3rd party like a telco network.
I've actually fixed my problem by setting up a gmail account in order to use the gmail smtp server for outgoing mail!
However I've also posted the queries on the virgin media website and I'll post any responses here as well.

  • Mail receiving but not sending emails

Hello there, I have a standard MacBook from 2008, it seems to have a problem when I open the Mail app. You see, I can receive emails with no problem, but when it comes to sending them, they remain in the outbox and so I'm stuck with using the webmail. I have 2 accounts, 1 gmail and 1 microsoft exchange. Can anyone please help me out? I appreciate any help given.
    Thank you in advance
    Kind regards

I found that until I set the port to 25 and authentication to none I was unable to uncheck SSL. One I had done this I was able to send from my main email and other email adddresses set up under my account."
Superb advice R&W!  My email sending block using TalkTalk started 2 months ago using Snow Leopard, continued when I upgraded to 10.8.2, and has been persistent on my wife's new iPad (IOS 6.1).  Implementing your wise words has fixed all that, and now enables me to call her on FaceTime — previously only she could call me.  Thank you so much; this will save hours of further fruitless searching and phoning.
Please remember that your email is now insecure, if you wish to have a secure connection SSL must be on and port 25 should be avoided.

I can't send emails via mail. I can receive but not send. I have set up gmail on mail. Any ideas? No problems with the set up previously to this.

Go to Mail Preferences- Accounts and confirm you are providing Gmail what they require to send and receive mail. And DON'T specify Secure Socket Layer. Some mail accts don't like SSL
    Good Luck to you.

  • Why can I receive but not send mail?

Why can I receive but not send mail?

With sparse information you give I would venture that you have not set up the correct Outgoing Mail Server settings in Mail>Preferences>Accounts. Contact your ISP for their set up.

  • Receive, But Not Send Mail

I recently purchased a new iMac and bought ProCare to bring all of my important documents from the old iMac to the new iMac. Since bringing home the new computer, I can only receive e-mail. Here are a few of the specifics:
We use comcast and have a wireless router in the house. I have tried connecting directly to the modem and wirelessly. I have tried using no authentication and authentication. I have tried using SSL. I have made sure the ports are correct for each of these settings. I have deleted the outgoing servers and reentered them. I have added a new account. That cannot send mail either. I also have an 14" iBook. I can send and receive mail from all accounts on that computer. To add to the confusion, I configured Entourage to send and receive e-mail today and it works with out any problems.
I am worried a corrupted e-mail came from the old computer?!? Is that possible? I think I have narrowed it down to the Mail application itself. Is there a pref file I should trash? I am confused as to why I can receive but not send? Another detail. When I hit send, it simply puts the file in the drafts folder. It is not as though the server is busy and puts the file in the Outbox.
Any help would be great. It is hard to get to the store for the genius to trouble shoot the issue.
    Thanks in advance,
    Debbie

When I hit send, it simply puts the file in the drafts folder.
What do you mean? The message is already in Drafts when you compose it, isn’t it? Does clicking the Send button actually do anything? Is it enabled at all or is it grayed out? Can you type the content of the message normally?
    Proceed as follows:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. Try to reproduce the problem and look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues.

  • Mail will receive but not send!!!!!!

Hi, my imail is receiving but not sending. I have 3 other computers in the office with different email address using imail and they are working fine? I deleted the account then added it and still cant send mail. its not a server issue because all other email address for our office email work just not mine.
    any help will do.

Try 'synchronize' under mailbox menu. Have had the same problem sporadically for no apparent reason. Have 3 email accounts set up and sometimes just one of them does this- different one every time. I call the ISP and it is not a problem on their end- and I know that is true because I can logon to the web-based version and see the emails that I am not getting in Apple Mail. Synchronize sometimes has fixed this problem for me.

Trying to set up mail....  will receive but not send.  Already called internet provider.  They said ask Apple.

    Hi ...
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), Lion.
From the Lion Help viewer ...
    If you can’t send messages
If the Send button is dimmed or you see an alert that your message can’t be sent using the outgoing mail server, you might not be able to send messages. Here are some things you can try:
Make sure the outgoing mail server is specified correctly, as directed by your email service provider.Verify your outgoing mail server
If you try to send a message and a dialog appears saying you need permission, an administrator has limited the email addresses you can correspond with. Click the Ask Permission button.Request permission to send messages
Choose Window > Connection Doctor, and follow any instructions displayed in the Details column. Check whether there is a problem with your outgoing mail server or a firewall, if applicable, or if there was a login failure. If the Connection Doctor indicates a firewall problem:Verify there is no firewall software blocking email traffic on port 25, 465, or 587.Check whether you’re affected by another firewall. This could be either software installed separately from Mac OS X or built into an Internet sharing router, or software administered by your Internet service provider. Contact the appropriate person to find out whether a firewall exists.
You may be able to send messages from only a certain location. For example, if you send messages from school, you may not be allowed to send messages using the school’s outgoing mail server when you’re at home. Or, the email service provider may allow you to send messages but with stricter settings (such as requiring a name and password). Get the information you need from your provider and then change the outgoing mail server settings in Mail preferences.

  • Why can I receive but not send emails

Why can I receive but not send emails on my i pad?

Perhaps the outgoing mail server settings are incorrect or incomplete.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.
