Mail rejects my password

Upgraded to Lion fairly smoothly. All seems to be OK (hate the monochrome finder icons..another stupid change like removing the blue progress bar with SL) Main problem is mail rejects my password on my imac but it works fine on iphone and ipad... bloody annoying. Any solutions?

Well I was posting back to Gary for more information.I have no idea what email providers you or Gary are using and don't know what help to give. If this is a .mac or .me account and you migrated to iCloud, it could be a very different situation.
Just because you're using the same information as SL, it doesn't mean that something might have changed or is not input correctly. For your other issues, you might either follow other treads or start another.

  • Mail rejecting my password; server timing out;

.Mac server "mail.mac.com" rejecting my password. I changed my password, account went from grey to black, still having problems getting email, sending is ok. BTW, I dropped my mobile me account. Is that the reason I can't get email on my computer any more? I'm not trying to log into mobile me to get email.

Yes, but I don't know why it's still sending, unless maybe you dropped the account less than 30 days ago.

  • TS3276 Mac Mail rejecting correct password for incoming only

My e mail has suddenly started rejecting my password even though it is correct. I can send but cannot receive e mail. This has never happened before but I have no incoming messages on either my Mac or my iphone.

Something seems amiss if both your Mac and iPhone starting having this problem at the same time. Was anything changed in anyway?
Are you sure the outgoing mail is going to the correct server?

  • Problem in Mail:  rejects correct password

My e-mail account won't connect in Mail (although I can open it fine on the web), even though I repeatedly put in the correct password.

Open Mac Mail then Command ,  (comma) to open Mail Preferences.
Select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Type in the correct password under Incoming Mail Server.
    Try your email account.
If that didn't help, open Keychain Access located in HD > Applications > Utiliites
    Select Passwords on the left.
Use the search field top right corner of the window to locate your email keychain then control click the keychain then click Delete.
Go back to the Mail Account Information window and re type the password under:  Incoming Mail Server.
You should be prompted to save that data to a new keychain.

  • Mail Rejects Exchange Password

I'm trying to set up Mail to access my company's Exchange server. I was able to get everything working properly in Entourage, but I'd much rather use Apple Mail. The problem seems to be that Mail keeps telling me my password is incorrect, even though I know it's accurate. I've tried setting my username to include the domain (eg. domain\username) as well as entering my full email address. Nothing seems to be working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is an unresolved issue for me as well. I've connected to an Exchange 2003 email account with Entourage, Versamail from a Treo Palm, and of course from MS Outlook, but when I go to set up a new account in Apple Mail I cannot get Exchange to connect.
Apple should either take the "fake" Exchange option off their mail account configuration if it doesn't work any better than this appears to work. Or provide help screens that provide step by step information about their 'unique' way of configuring this service. It has outgoing server configuration that doesn't make sense with an Exchange account...? With exchange if you can get to the server the client and the server should understand each other.
If Versamail and Entourage connects what's up with Apple Mail? Does anyone have any other secrets for getting Apple Mail to connect to an Exchange server email account? I like Apple Mail better than Entourage and would like to get this to work.
    Thanks, GZ

How did you do that?  According to Apple, the system requirements for iCloud is OS X Lion 10.7.2 or later.  You posted in the Snow Leopard forums and your system info is showing "Mac OS X (10.6.8)"

  • Mail rejecting password and has now locked me out

    Anyone else experience this:
Computer goes into sleep mode with mail program was still open. Upon being reactivated from sleep, the pop-up window says password for the mail account has been rejected.
I've typed in the password (accurately) and it was rejected. I typed the password in again, but it was rejected. This nonsense continued enough to where the account disables and now I cannot get back in.
Alas, I cannot reset the password because I cannot remember the security question answer. But the real issue is the program rejecting the password when I never logged out of mail.
This is a mess, since Apple is utterly hard-headed about a security question I created 8 years ago. And my credit cards have changed since then, as well, and I don't have access to those numbers.
This account originated as a mac.com, which was changed by Apple to .me and mobile me and icloud. This is f'd up.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you mean that Find My Phone is asking for a password to a different Apple ID to your current Apple ID and that ID is a previous version of your current ID, not an entirely different one.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details and some other circumstances.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID using your current password, you don’t need access to this address if it’s previously been used with your Apple ID, once you have saved these details enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone" and delete the account from your device. It may take a short while to remove the account.
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, save it once again and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

You should still be able to log into an old email account, even if you haven't used it for some time, very few providers delete email accounts.

  • My Mail application is rejecting my password even though I'm putting it in correctly. Mail is working fine on my iPad and iPhone but not my iMac so it must be something to do with the Mail settings on my desktop. My software is up to date.  Can you help?

I have an iMac, operating system 10.7.4 with up to date software. My mail application is rejecting my password even though I know I am putting it in correctly. I have an ipad and iphone and the mail application is working fine on them. On my desktop however I cannot receive or send mail. I think it must be something to do with the settings but cannot work out what. I have contacted BT who provides my email and internet. As I have another email address with them that is working correctly they believe it is a problem with mail rather than with them. Please can you help?

    OK Vicky, good clues...
    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over. See if there are duplicates, should be one for Incoming & one for Outgoing.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

If the setting is greyed out perhaps you have restrictions enabled that would prevent someone from changing accounts. Settings>General>Restrictions>Allow Changes>Accounts.

  • TS3276 Mail rejected password to one of my 3 accounts with Gmail, all old.  Successfully entered the account from Google mail interface.  What's wrong?

I have had Mail for years.  Have new MacBook Pro, set my old 3 accounts with Gmail, used them successfully. Yesterday, Mail rejected password to one of my accounts and does not accept it repeatedly.  I entered this account from Gmail page, no problem, so my password is correct.  Went back to Mail, this particular account is rejected.  Checked all Mail preferences, all are the same as initially set.  What is wrong?

In both cases, the default address is right.  However, upon receiving the email, it says the wrong address.  Thus, when people reply to my emails, I do not get it in my apple email, I have to sign in under the other (wrong) email address.

  • I keep trying to access my mail but MAIL keeps rejecting my password. I am an AOL user. Please advise?

I keep trying to access my mail via the MAIL icon on my MacbookPro but it keeps rejecting my password. It worked find an hour ago but all of a sudden it won't work. I tried deleting the acct and re-adding it but still the same problem. The odd thing is I can send no problem.
I am an AOL user and am entering it correctly but it keeps rejecting  I can access my acct via aol no problem
Okay now it's effecting my Iphone and Ipad accts.
    Please advise?

So far as I can tell this is a server overload problem and Apple is working to fix things. I have had the same thing all morning and just now it cleared up, though not with AOL, but my iCloud mail. I was, of course, typing in the correct password, so the error message one keeps getting is very misleading, as the rejection has nothing to do with the PW. I think if we are all patient things will straighten out through the day. My mail is okay as of noon, crossing my fingers, but at least it is nothing I did wrong.

  • Mail rejects password

Hopefully some one can help me. I have comcast server, but i dont go on their site to check my email. I use my mail icon on my desktop dock to check it. So usually i click on the icon and check my email and when i go to send an email, a message comes up that reads -
*Enter password for Account "POP Account"*
*The POP server "mail.comcast.net" rejected the password for user "......(my name here")*
*Please re-enter your password or cancel -*
So then i usually put in my password and i dont have to do it again until i restart my computer next time. Well now the message is coming up every 3 or 4 minutes. I have the correct password. I called comcast and they verified it and i can go on comcast website and get my mail there but its easier to use the mac mail on my machine. anyone have a clue???

Trouble is, rejected Password doesn't actually mean that, LOL, one thing I read on this was somebody adding @comcast.net after the username fixed it.
I'm sure you've tried many things, but tough to tell out here what you've done.
Might try oine of these to setup an account to see if they work...

  • Mail rejecting password

Hey there, I'm having a problem. I've been using mail with a .mac email address for three years. Yesterday, out of the blue I got the following error message when I try to send any message:
The SMTP server “smtp.mac.com” rejected the password for user “mstuman”
I've tried to enter my password in the dialog box that shows up, re-enter my password on the preferences page, restarted mail, rebooted whole system.
Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it?
    Peace,
    mstuman

Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, then Window > Keychain First Aid, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, you may try removing the password entry from the keychain and letting Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.
Note, however, that Mail often doesn’t correctly report what the problem really is. If Mail can connect to the server but cannot log into your mail account for some reason, it’ll ask for your password regardless of whether that’s really the problem or not. Don’t keep entering the password every time — just click Cancel instead, and take the account back online afterwards.
Some ISPs refuse connection attempts if they are too frequent, for example, or limit the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed from the same IP address, or there may be too many messages on the server and Mail times out before the server responds, or there might be a problem with the network, or there might be a problem with the server...
Do you access this account from more than one computer or some other way (e.g. webmail) while Mail is checking for mail?
What’s the time interval chosen in Mail > Preferences > General > Check for New Mail? If it’s set to Every minute, try changing it to Every 5 minutes.
If this is a POP account, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Remove copy from server settings?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible (i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc.), or shutting down both the computer and the router/modem used to connect to Internet, restarting, and see whether that makes a difference.
You may also want to check with the provider of this account in case they’ve made some changes recently that could have a bearing on this.

  • Mail rejects password, why??

Mail has been working like a charm all year then, about 2 weeks ago occasionally the message pops up " the POP server rejected the password for user [email protected] Re enter your password or cancel"
I choose cancel, click on "get mail" and it works just fine, I get new mail.
This is an intermittent problem, not 100% of the time.
I use Mail 2.0 and sbcglobal.net, DSL connection.
I have repaired permissions, etc. etc...
    What is going on?

I wouldn't place all blame on Apple just yet.
Although this is a checking an account for new mail problem, not long ago SBC decided to block the use of all SMTP servers outside of their netork on Port 25 and conveniently neglected to inform their customers beforehand.
SBC customers were required to "opt out" of Port 25 blocking or use SBC's SMTP server to send mail with any email accounts not provided by SBC.
Point being, SBC made a major change without informing all or most of their customers beforehand so I wouldn't rule out SBC having a problem or contributing to the problem at this point.
