Mail Rules Needed

I am a new user of Mail having recently moved over from Entourage.
I have 12 email accounts that I use in Mail 5.2 in Lion.
When I look for new mail in the top level inbox (which shows all of the inbox messages as one list) the unread dot shows up and disappears when I have read the email. However, having read the email at that top level has no effect on the behavior of the individual inboxes.
I have to go to each individual mailbox and open the email to lose the dot.
Is there a rule or setting that will cause the opening of an email at the top level to be reflected in the individual inboxes?
A similar behaviour occurs if I delete an email at that top level -- it remains undeleted in the individual inbox.
Can anyone suggest a change of setting and/or added rules that will force such changes as opening or deleting mail to have a global effect?

I was futzing with Rules when I realized that my copy of Mail does not do that, read or delete, it makes no difference if I do it in the Subfolder or the Root.

  • Mail "Rules" Needs Streamlining ... Any Suggestions?

In switching from pc to Mac, I am having a challenge going from Eudora Pro to Mail, particularly in the area of filters/rules. In Eudora, it is extremely easy to create a filter by right-clicking on an e-mail; or by using the toolbar. As a psychotherapist with research interests, I have been used to maintaining several mailboxes where I keep e-mails indefinitely. Are there any work-arounds for this? Right now, to set up a rule for a given e-mail, I have to go to mail/preferences/rules and then manually enter (from memory or notes). Would love some help. Thank you.

I'm confused. what exactly do you have to enter by hand from memory?

  • Should have said "I need Mail Rule help" .. sorry

I know this has probably been solved many times and is old hat to a lot of you. I am trying to create an applescript that forwards only the body of an e-mail to my cell phone triggered from a Mail rule. It runs fine in the editor but not as a Mail rule. I may even want to restrict it to the first 200 characters. I've read that maybe I have to set up a sub routine but I don't know how to do that. I've spent way too much time trying to figure out why it won't work. I'm old and don't like wasting my precious time (lol) Any help would be appreciated. Here's the script. It's been put together with some I saw on the net. Thanking in advance.

I've seen posts on the Web that this ability was 'broken' with Leopard.
You could just set up a Mail Rule to Forward incoming messages (however, the complete message will bb fwd, no way to limit to 200 characters.

  • Need help filtering spam using Mail Rules

    Hello
My me.com address is on a **** spam email circulation list. Most of the emails come from .RU or .UA and every email address is different. I receive up to 3 a day.
I have tried Mail rules to filter this, but for some reason it is not working. I have tried filtering the individual email address and all .RU addresses, but the Mail filter just doesn't apply the rule.
I normally use Aliases for any only registration - so I am not sure how my real me.com account name was found. I have also tried VIW/MESSAGE/RAW SOURCE (see results below). I have replaced my me.com email address with "[email protected]".
This spam is driving me nuts, so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I am having exactly the same problem with mail not applying the rules. I have a rule set that if any mail is considered junk mail, to redirect it to [email protected] and to move it to the trash folder. I click "apply rules" on my junk mail, nothing happens. New spam comes in that it marks as Junk, nothing happens. I mark an email as junk, nothing happens.
After over a year of problem after problem with my mac, I have almost lost faith. Can someone please help us?? Is anyone out there??
    Thank you,
    Kristen

  • Lost mail rules when upgrading to ML, can't restore from time machine

    Hi,
I've installed mountain lion and restored from time machine and mail rules were not there. There's only news from apple.
I tried to restore the rules myself (MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup) but when opening mail rules were not there yet. Nevertheless, i can add rules manually, so if there was a way of looking at the past rules I could just copy them (though it's not the best way).

My rules are still there, so perhaps Apple support speak with resource forked tongue.
Comparing an old (pre ML) rules file from 20th June with the ML one, the differences are:
The file name was: MessageRules.plist, the ML one is SynchedRules.plist. Both are in my V2 folder, but the old Rules have been copied (by Mail, not me) into the new SynchedRules file.
In the old file, for each item (Rule) the first line was Active (Key) String (Type) 1 (Value). In the ML file, this line is no longer there, so the first line is AllCriteriaMustBeSatisfied.
You can see these differnces in the "preview" part of Finder Show Info, if you have the two files to compare.
Thus, just copying and renaming the old Rules file probably won't work, because of this difference. Mail probably just makes a new file because the copied file isn't as expected. It should be possible to edit the old plist file to remove the "Active" line, and rename it to SynchedRules.plist (but see below). The top is slightly different, just below <dict>, as this relates to the Active line. There are a  couple of lines at the bottom that aren't in the new file.
The "Active" line that has gone is now in a file called RulesActiveState.plist. This file is just a list of RuleIds from the SynchedRules.plist (like this:
    AC6F6611-FF61-4AA6-9682-BA100EFAC233)
Doing this does sound rather tedious, but might be quicker than manually re-entering blocked email addresses etc. to replicate old rules. As plist files are in xml format, it should be possible to use a text editor to delete the unwanted "Active" line from the message rules list by Find & Replace All (with nothing). All this could then be copied to the "SynchedRules.plist. You would need to copy the RuleIds into the RulesActiveState.plist as well.
Make a copy of the files first just in case...

  • Mail Rules not applying to Sent folder

I have rules set up to color code my e-mails. They work fine in all my mailboxes (Inbox, Trash, personal folders), but do not work properly when applied to my 'Sent' folder (the messages all turn orange). What's the problem?
I have Gmail being forwarded to the Apple Mail program using IMAP settings.

there is no problem. Mail rules work on incoming mail only. if you want Mail rules to apply to sent messages you need a 3rd party plugin. MailActOn
    http://www.indev.ca/MailActOn.html
    can do it.

  • Can i use Boolean Expressions in Mail Rules?

Can i use Boolean Expressions in Mail Rules?
I need to create a rule to check whether a message contains BOTH a first and last name of EITHER of two people.
For example, the rule im looking to create goes something like this:
If ANY of the following conditions are met:
message content - contains - john & doe
message content - contains - jane & doe
ive tried and cant seem to get it to work...
    Message was edited by: mysterioso

AFAIK Mail rules do not support boolean expressions.
to do what you want you'd have to create two rules
    rule 1
if ALL of the following conditions are met
message content - contains - john
message content - contains - jdoe
    and similarly for rule 2.

  • How can I copy the Mail "rules" I have already setup on my old MacBook over to the new machine?

Setting up my new MacBook Pro. How can I copy the Mail "rules" I have already setup on my old MacBook over to the new machine?
Is there a file I can copy & paste?

    Thanks Barry & all,
Is it enough to just copy the rule-related files ??
    i.e.
    Library/Mail/V2/MailData/RulesActiveState.plist
    Library/Mail/V2/MailData/SyncedRules.plist
    Library/Mail/V2/MailData/UnsyncedRules.plist
What you suggest copies the local mailbox content + all the settings ...
while what I need is much less... and I'd like to be able to sync rules also in the future
by copying something light and simple ... not the entire Library/Mail folder
    Many thanks,

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that use CMAK to configure split tunneling on VPN clients, traffic to specified devices can be routed via their own default gateway.
If the manually added route entries all have default metric and interface, clients will select one by the default routing rule, can’t select one of them according to clients’ own conditions. So, I am afraid that CMAK can’t implement the function which you need.
A blog described about How to configure split tunneling on VPN clients using CMAK, for your reference:

  • Mail rule message content as variable

I run a minecraft serer, and i need a way to promote a player when they fill in a form on the website. Every time a player filles in the form, I get an email like this:
    New application for member:
    Naam:  <name of the pearson>
Username:  <minecraft username of the person>
Skype naam:  <skype name of the person>
    E-mail:  <email of the person>
Nieusbrief:  <Whether they want to get the newsletter or not>
I know there is a way to setup a mail rule that runs an applescript, and from that I can run a shel script, but is it posible to feed the playername to the shel script script as a variable? So from the mesage body to the apple script, and from the apple script th the shel script. First problem I face is getting the username to the apple script. Then there is the second problem: I know there is an run-shel-script thingy, but i'm not sure how to pass the variable on from the apple script to the shel scrip. (I don't have anny experience with apple scripts...)
    Anny help is appreciated.

    Hi Stefan,
Thanks for your reply.  I am glad to hear that I am wrong again )
In your opinion is it possible to force the Outlook Exchange server to add the content attachment every time?  I mean by doing some configuration on it...?
The reason why we would like to do this is because when - in the content tag of a Mail Package message - we have MIME message parts that are of content-type text/html we are having problems in decoding the html back to a readable format.
To do this we use the apache QuotedPrintableCodec Java class.
This works fine when the content type of the message is just text/plain but we get an exception when we try with text/html.
    The exception we get is:
org.apache.commons.codec.DecoderException: Invalid URL encoding: not a valid digit (radix 16): 13
I don't know if this is because of the two character sets we have in the payload (utf-8 and iso-8859-1) or if it is for other reasons...
If you could help me figure out how to forward any HTML email to another system in a readable format it would be great.
    Thanks for your support,
    Aldo

  • Mac mail rules do not display properly

I use Mac Mail rules to manage my mail, but I am having trouble using them because, many time the "Perform the following actions:" display gets so scrunched together that I cannot see what I've already entered or, if I'm editing a rule, what needs to be changed (see image capture, below).  This does not happen with every rule but it happens on many of them.  It occasionally (but less often) happens with the conditions entries too.
I've had this problem for some time, but it's gotten much worse since I upgraded to Yosemite.
Another problem I'm having with the mail rules is that sometimes the "Stop evaluating rules" option is grayed out and I can't enter it as an action.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • Mail rules and iCloud

Is there a way of copying mail rules in one mac to keep them alive on my macs after iCloud?
    I would appreciate any help,
    Thanks!
    Mario Lordeiro

I'm using the same Apple ID for both accounts to allow syncing.
I use QUICKEN to track finances.  The main reasons I set up two users is to separate fishing club finances from my personal finances and to separate documents.  At this point I have decided to combine the two accounts; sort documents; and open separate QUICKEN accounts as needed.  I do think that Apple Mail needs attention to correct inconsistencies such as the one I pointed out.

  • Mail Rules issue

    Hi, folks--
    MAIL 3.6 (936)
I have my mail automatically routed to folders.
I also have my wife's mail automatically routed.
    BUT...
if an email is sent to both of us (and MANY are),
both go to her folder and NONE to mine
(due to 'her rule' location in the list of rules.)
    More succinctly:
we receive two copies of an email-- one intended for her, and one for me.
They both go to her; none to me.
Is there a work-around for this?
    Thx,
    Steve

"It" is an email sent to a small group.
We receive them as members of quite a few different groups.
Imagine an email sent to six people, and "two" of those messages to different people (wife & I)
come through my computer and  Mail Rules (for distribution).  They both go to one of us,
and her rule is first, so they 'all' go to her.
Dumping "her rule" would help, but cause another issue.
I think a double-pronged rule "argument" might be what is needed.
Or another option I haven't thought of...?

  • Running AppleScript from Mail rules

    Hi.
I'm pretty new to this, so sure it's a basic question....
I've created An AppleScript that calls an Automator application.  This runs fine if I open the script in the editor and click run.
I've now created a mail rule which should run this script if a mail is received with defined subject, but it doesn't....
Whatever I try, it's just not running the script.
    Any help?

    Yes.
    tell application "iTunes"
      quit
    end tell
    delay 60
    tell application "iTunes"
      activate
    end tell
Change 60 seconds in delay to the delay you need.
(still might not work as a Mail Rule, but give it a try)
