Mail Rules Stopped Applying to Sent Messages Since October 15th 2013.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or has anyone some idea of what could be done to return the applicability of rules to sent items?
I'm using OS X's native mail client, Mail. I'm now on Mavericks but the rules that had been working for over a year suddenly stopped working on sent items on the 15th of October 2013 before I upgraded, when I was still running Mountain Lion, so it's not Mavericks' fault.
Thank you to anyone who takes the time to suggest any ideas they might have.

Thank you for the link - I had found and read that particular article while doing google research into the problem - it was only after I couldn't find a solution to (or even an explaination of) the problem that I posted this question - it's a very clear article though so I was happy to read it again.
I understand that people using Mail to handle their Gmail accounts do have all sorts of problems related, perhaps, to not having fully understood carefully researched workarounds that I remember reading and instigating for myself about 3+ years ago. As I said, this resulted in a setup that has had the flexibility to adapt itself flawlessly to my varing requirements since. Perhaps I was fortunate in this regard and I expect that, by striving to achieve my requirements by structuring mailboxes and rules to be as simple as possible, I avoided the vicissitudes that you and I have both read about.
I made no changes to my Gmail accounts, nor to Mail itself, that could have precipitated the cessation of my rules' influence on sent messages. I never use Gmail itself in fact - I only ever send and read through Mail.
I know I posted this question under the 'Mavericks' section but, as I tried to make clear, the problem was not caused by upgrading to Mavericks - it started before then. I had not tried any of the betas, nor did I knowingly install any upgrade of Mail prior to the change in behaviour (I upgrade manually).
In short, whilst I would not expect Mail to apply rules to messages sent directly with Gmail (since Mail would have to read them back in again through IMAP, successfully recognise them as 'sent' and then retrospectivly apply rules), I do expect it to be able to continue applying rules to its own sent messages.

  • Mail Rules not applying to Sent folder

I have rules set up to color code my e-mails. They work fine in all my mailboxes (Inbox, Trash, personal folders), but do not work properly when applied to my 'Sent' folder (the messages all turn orange). What's the problem?
I have Gmail being forwarded to the Apple Mail program using IMAP settings.

there is no problem. Mail rules work on incoming mail only. if you want Mail rules to apply to sent messages you need a 3rd party plugin. MailActOn
    http://www.indev.ca/MailActOn.html
    can do it.

  • I have advised my icloud mail to NOT SAVE my sent messages.  However, it continues to SAVE ALL SENT MESSAGES.  How do I get it to stop saving them?

I want icloud to stop saving my SENT messages in my SENT folder.  I have NOT checked the SENT folder - but it continues to save the sent messages.  Alas, how to stop it?

The iTunes sync process does not include email account mailboxes and messages.
If the account is a POP account, all received messages tha remain on the server will be downloaded as new and unread messages. Messages in the account's Sent and Trash mailboxes will not be available since these mailboxes are not stored on the server with a POP account.
If the account is an IMAP account and you were storing the account's Sent and Deleted mailboxes on the server with the account settings on your iPhone, messages in all server stored mailboxes will be available again but must be re-downloaded which will occur when a server stored mailbox is selected.
Not sure why the apps in your iTunes library that were not selected under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and were not on your iPhone were selected and transferred, but the apps can be removed by deselecting the apps under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync.

  • Apple Mail Rules dont apply when mail is READ on other devices!

    Hi,
I use IMAP settings on Apple Mail (v4.5) and also check my emails on the iPhone (iPhone also set up with IMAP). However if i have read an email on the iPhone then when i switch my computer on the incoming Apple Mail Rule that applies to that sender does not seem to work. It keeps the mail within my Inbox and does not transfer the mail/message to the desired folder.
However, if the same sender sends me an email which i do not read on the iPhone and then switch my Apple Mail ON, then the mail is automatically transferred to the desired folder.
It looks like the problem is only with READ mail and not UNREAD mail.
Is there a fix for this? There seems to be a lot of people having the same issue and was wondering if there is any work around on this?
Would really appreciate any help from anyone on this.
    Regards,
    Jay
PS: I recently moved from Outlook 2011 on MAC to Apple Mail as i heard is a far superior mail application and works smoothly. So far everything about Apple Mail has been correct, it is a fantastic app, however this Rule problem is pretty basic and surprised that Apple still has not fixed this.

    Hi Glenn,
Many thanks for this. Unfortunately i dont have this facility on the server as we are using a simple opensource mail delivery and storage service, so the rules would have to be set up on the computer.
I was using Outlook 2011 and prior that was using Entourage 2008 and both worked well with the IMAP rules. Nothing was ommitted and everything READ or UNREAD was imported and the rules applied. It's only in Apple Mail that these rules dont seem to work.
Is there no other work around? No Apple Mail Add-Ins? I see quite a number of people complaining about the same problem and i'm surprise that Apple has not found a solution for this.
Anyway, thank you soo much for your reply. Much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Jay

  • Two probs: All mail rules stopped working, 'Empty' mail folders

    Hi All,
I have two problems that began simultaneously:
    1) All my rules have stopped working automatically. If I highlight an e-mail and select apply rules, then it will do it, but the rules don't apply as new mail comes to In box.
    2) The number of unread messages next to the folder's name will be shown but the window itself will be blank. If I quit and restart, all the messages (new and old) will be there.
Why is it doing any of this, and how can I fix it?
The only relatively new thing regarding how my e-mail is handled is that I started using Thunderbird. If Tbird is the problem, how do I figure out if it's causing the conflict?
Silly me, I started using Tbird because it has emoticons, but it lacks all the other features I really like about Mail.
    Thank you,

Hi La Tricia, and a warm welcome to the forums!

  • Mail is red flagging all sent messages

    Hi,
This is my first time posting in the community as I am ALWAYS able to find a fix for any Apple issues by searching the web.  However, I am completely stumped on this one.
Since upgrading to Mavericks, every single message I send in Apple Mail on my exchange account gets automatically tagged with a default red flag.  No matter what I've done so far, I cannot stop mail from automatically flagging all sent mail.
This does not happen with my 3 Gmail accounts I have running in mail.
Additionally, when the messages are flagged, they are only flagged in Mail.  When I look in Outlook 365 online, the messages are not flagged.
I have tried to rebuild mailbox, went into System Preferences and unclicked 'Mail' under my exchange account in Internet Accouts then re-checked it.  I have no idea what else to do as I have not been able to find any semi-related topics anywhere like this.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

You might try using another e-mail program to see if the same thing happens.

  • Mail does not (always) display sent messages w/attachments

    Hello,
A frustration:  my Mail 8.2 (using iCloud and OS X 10.2.2) often does not display particular Sent messages -- this most often occurs when I have multiple attachments and have spent quite some time, often approaching half an hour, composing the message -- but sometimes it occurs when only a single attachment and a quick, 10 second, composition period. Recipients report receiving the emails and the attachments. The vast majority of Sent messages are properly displayed.
I have searched for the missing Sents by recipient, subject line and even text and .... they do not appear in any mailbox.
Wi-Fi connections are strong and not problematic. The issue is not particular to any one recipient. All software updates are current.
While it has been some time since I Repaired Permissions I am not detecting any other problems.
The frustration is "OMG where did that half-hour of work GO?" followed by a usually unnecessary follow-up email or call to the recipient.
Any suggestions would be appreciated; thanks.

    Hi Linc,
    As per my original question.
Using iCloud, which is as you know IMAP. I noticed it does not occurr with pop mail servers. Thank you for looking into this.

  • Mail Rule seems to be confusing messages

This script extracts email addresses from the body of a message and resends the message to each of the extracted addresses. It works well when one message arrives at a time. However, when several messages arrive at once, it often sends a message to the wrong address. The script is very straight forward, yet I am not sure what is going on. Any ideas?

Sorry but my AppleScript is too rusty to wade through your script. However, a while ago I wrote a script to extract email addresses from an emailed web form with a defined format and send a reminder 4 days later with a specified message.
I opted to use a mail rule to put a copy of specified messages into another mail folder - this may be more reliable for you.
For my 4 day delay I set a 'Users Daemon' to run an AppleScript every hour. This is more efficient and reliable than setting delays in AppleScript.
The most tedious task is parsing for all possible email formats - check email RFCs if you doubt this.
This script was not completed but the sections I tested on Leopard worked well. Here is the incomplete script - just in case you find something useful:
    tell application "Mail"
set fourDays to 345600 -- normally 345600 but can be 0 for testing
repeat with lastMsg from (count messages of mailbox "Pending") to 1 by -1
      try
set thisMsg to message lastMsg of mailbox "Pending"
      end try
if (current date) - (date sent of thisMsg) > fourDays then
set txt to content of thisMsg
      set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {"Email id"}
set newRecipient to paragraph 3 of text item 2 of txt
set html to source of thisMsg
                                  set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {"<body bgcolor=\"#FFFFFF\" text=\"#000000\">"}

  • Mail (IMAP)hangs on copying sent message or RSS?

Mail has been working well using an ancient AOL account via IMAP,but now hangs if I select one or more sent emails (or RSS messages) and use the menu to copy them. A force quit is required.
If instead I try to copy several incoming messages, it opens a window indicating copying from server and the progress bar proceeds extremely to completion but it is not possible to paste the result (if it exists) anywhere (e.g., to a mailbox on my mac).
Otherwise mail is working in that incoming messages appear normally and outgoing messages proceed as before.
The copy failures have occurred since a couple of events/changes that may or may not have caused this:
    1. Installed the last security update 2008-7(?)
2.a later system hang/near KP a couple of days ago (upper half inch of the screen went dark grey and everything froze, as if the KP screen was starting to show but couldn't even get that far.
I've since run Disk utility for permissions, then Applejack, then Diskwarrior with no effect on the situation. I rebuilt the mailboxes that were the desired sources and the target mailboxes also with no effect. I haven't tried anything like discarding mail plists.
Thanks for any suggestions on diagnosis or cure.

    Ernie,
    I don't know about Tristan but I can say;
1- Previously left the SMTP servers I have (about 7 of them, mostly fully authenticated) using the 'typical ports' setting which presumably cycles between 25, 465 and 587.
2- I have had cases where 5 messages have failed to send but only 2 of them appear in the 'outbox'. In that case mail.app was showing as 'Sending' but I was unable to see what it was sending and which smtp server it was trying to use. There was no way to cancel it either (the activity window was no help).
3- I don't use 'Use this Server Only', I typically try every server I have.
The problem is that hotel ISPs typically even try to intercept SMTP over SSL, leading to Mail.app getting royally confused.
Is there any way I can get some better diagnostics on what's really happening here? I usually find that mail.app works OK until it starts trying to send a mail, so my feeling is that I should be concentrating on the SMTP stuff. I have now switched over to using port 587 (for SMTP over SSL) only in the vain hope that the hotel ISPs aren't watching that port- my suspicion is that mail.app is poking port 25 first, getting the intercepted server and then trying to use authenticated SMTP to that (spoofed) server and getting confused- that's born out by the certificate failures I often see when in hotels.
    Thanks.

  • Sent Mail now put in seperate 'Sent Messages' folder - big problems

Never had this problem before. I have my MobileMe account set to sync everything to the server across my 10.5.8 MacBookPro and 3.0.1 iPhone 3GS. Sent Mail has always been put in the standard 'Sent' folder and we've got along fine.
The other day I was setting up my email on a 10.5.7 iMac and when it did the mail sync, it created a new folder called 'Sent Messages (.me)' and preceded to put all the synced up sent messages in this folder instead of the standard 'Sent' folder at the top of the Mail.app application.
Now its a right mess. On the iPhone I can not select 'Sent' in the 'On the Server' list when choosing where to put sent mail. It only offers 'Sent' 'On My iPhone' and shows the 'Sent Messages (.mac)' on the other list.
How do I hit the reset button and get this back to where it was before with 'Sent' folder sync bliss?
Do I need to remove the accounts from all machines and start again?
Could 10.5.7 on the iMac be the culprit?
    Many thanks.

    Maybe not...
I've had the same symptoms suddenly appear while using an IMAP account. Sent mail is no longer saved in the Sent folder -- unlike you, I can't find any of my new Sent mail. (but mail sent from my iPhone does show up) The same flurry of extra IMAP-related folders has also appeared, including the "Sent Messages" folder, just below the "Sent" folder.
So, it doesn't seem to be a .mac issue. I hadn't changed any settings today before I noticed that it started happening.

I have no idea what solved the problem but mail works just fine right now.
So I guess it was either the internet connection (which I still doubt as I was able to send messages) or it was the server of my mail provider.

Sounds like a limit of your ISP, as it's trying to put it back on the mailserver, which may not accept such a large file.

  • Color coded mail rule stopped working

We were color coding our email via rules. i.e. anything from family is highlighted in blue on the list of mail.
Just got a new MacbookPro and installed everything to it from Time Machine. Now the rules seem to be working intermitantely. They show up if you go to preferences and look at the rules, but don't seem to be totally functioning.
    Any thoughts?

Well all I can suggest is that you go in and check out the settings on that mail rule and see if everything is just like it was a year ago (when it was working ;)).
