Mail's Add to Address Book inverts name order in Address Book

Using Mail's 'Add to Address Book' function results in inverted first/last name order in Address Book: Under every combination of setting for 'show first name before/following last name' and 'sort by first/last name' in the AB prefs, using Mail's Add to Address Book on 'Bob Jones' results in 'Jones' in the first name field and 'Bob' in the last name field.
Are others also seeing this? Any workarounds?

Thanks for testing, Ernie. I double-checked my system using your settings and still saw the names in the wrong fields. Something must be off with my setup but I have no idea what it might be! If anyone can replicate this problem, maybe we can figure it out.

  • Address book corrupts names

Address book/Mail keeps corrupting some names in my address book.
I have had .mac on three mac's for a year and a half, syncing all my e-mails and address's.
For some reason certain names it keeps changing. eg. "Dad" becomes "Dad, Dad". This then syncs to my iPhone. So I delete the second Dad from one machine or the iPhone and sync it and they all go back to normal. Later when writing an e-mail it will spontaneously change back and will flicker between one or the other if you keep deleting and re-typing "dad" in the TO field or CC field.
Also it will be fine and i will be out of the house and and my machines will be home and off and my dad will call or e-mail, and it will go from "Dad" which i have seen in my address book earlier that day to "Dad, Dad". It happened to loads of contacts when i added my iphone to the .mac sync list and but they were mostly rectified by editing the entries and waiting for the sync to resolve it.
Short of Just deleting and re-adding the affected ones I don't know what to do. Also the iPhone moved all the first names to last names for some reason. so i moved them back but some of them have remained.
Is this some sort of inherent incompatibility with OSX Address book and .mac? my point being that it can be corrupted on any client then synced with the rest.

I agree that once you have two people called 'Dave' it then becomes necessary to have a surname and in-fact I've started adding all new people with surnames. I am however unlikely to ever have more than one entry for 'Mum' or 'Dad'.
Also when you say the names are in the e-mail address even if you don't see it my friend Jacob who's e-mail address I've recently added is [email protected] and it hasn't attempted to add Lord or Ermintrude as his surname or Jacob as his surname it's just left it as is, yet every single time i communicate with my dad it f*cks around trying to decide whether his name is 'Dad' or 'Dad, Dad' (see original post)
I might just copy everything into a text file, delete everyone in the address book, sync it to all machines/iPhone, then add everyone one at a time back into address book and let in sync back to everything else.
This is definitely new to the last month or so.

  • When clicking on name in address book -the email address appears different in the email address bar and can't be sent -why?

I have been using thunderbird for some years - in last month when I have been trying to send some emails I have a problem with some of them in that part of the email address has changed when I insert it ino the address bar and has inverted commas around the first part of the address before the @. I have tried deleting the addresses and re-inserting them but the same thing happens. If I go into the address bar and delete the commas the email is sent - can I overcome this problem without having to go into each email? I send out emails to many people and changing each one that has the problem takes a long time. Not every email address has this problem. Many thanks -Tim

ok, I've spent some time doing various scenarios.
I have managed to replicate one scenario which does as you say.
If my contact in the address book:
With name details as Peter Foo
    email address: [email protected]
where there is an inserted space before the name peter, of course this is not instantly noticeable, but it is as if you hit the space bar just before typing the email address.
Then when I use the Contacts Sidebar in a Write message, it will add the email address like this:
    Peter Foo <" peter"@somewhere.com>
    which of course in invalid.
but in the address book, if highlight the contact, in the section below the email address in blue -if I click this to send an email the email address is printed exacly with the space and it will send as if nothing is wrong.
So i'm asking you to check those email addresses which insert incorrectly via the Contacts sidebar. They only do this for me if there is a hidden inserted space at the start of the email address.

  • Adding a Generic Email Address (Domain Name Only) to Address Book

Is it possible to set up a generic email address (like @google.com) in Apple address book?
I ask this because I have created a set of rules in Apple Mail to help filter out spam mail, and in my spam rules I check to see if the sender's email address is in my address book, in which case, I assume the incoming email is not spam.
Now, when it comes to companies and organizations that I have dealings with, what I would like to do is add a generic email address to my Apple address book, that covers the whole company.
By generic email address, I mean an address that comprises the domain name only: for example: if [email protected] is a specific email address, then the corresponding generic email address is @google.com.
This is so that if I receive an email from another department or another individual in the same company, such as from [email protected] or [email protected] say, then these emails will also be considered to be in my address book, and thus get through my spam mail rules as well.

    Hello there, Kate.
Apologies for your frustration. For your security the existing questions need to be answered before new ones can be created. The following Knowledge Base article provides some additional steps to try if you are unsure of the answers to the existing ones:
Apple ID: All about Apple ID security questions

    Specifically:
What should I do if I don't remember the answers to my Apple ID security questions?
Try answering them at least once to see if you can get them right, even if you are not sure you remember the answers to your security questions.
If you are confident you can't remember them, try one of the following:
If you have three security questions and a rescue email address
sign in to My Apple ID and select the Password and Security tab to send an email to your rescue email address to reset your security questions and answers.
If you have one security question and you know your Apple ID passwordsign in to My Apple ID and select the Password and Security tab to reset your security question.
If you have one security question, but don't remember your Apple ID password
contact Apple Support for assistance. Learn more about creating a temporary support PIN to help Apple confirm your identity when you contact Apple Support.
Note: If you have forgotten your password and answer your security questions incorrectly too many times in a row, you will be unable to try to answer your security questions for a period of time. During that time you will not be able to reset your password and will not have access to your account.

  • Address book-multiple names in 1 entry

How do I add multiple names to one address card? For example, if a married couple has different last names, like John Smith and Jane Doe, when I try to enter in the name field it only lets me enter 1 last name and 1 first name.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You don't. The public schema for the Address Book application was intended to support one record per individual identity. You should create separate records for each significant other individual.
You can 'relate' records in a fashion by selecting the relationship field below birthday—usually with presets for friend and assistant set by default, as I recall—insert the name of the related party, and choose an appropriate indicator: father, mother, parent, brother, sister, child, friend, spouse, partner, assistant, manager, other or some custom field label you enter. When searching for all related parties, you can search for the last name, if you have included that information in the relationship data field, and all related records will be shown in a list.

  • Wrong name in email address and damaged index in address book

I have experienced this problem for months now. I have a Mac Pro at the office and MacBook Pro at home. The address book is synced with .mac. At random I will receive emails and the mail program will attach the wrong name with the address ( John doe [email protected] will be displayed as mary smith [email protected] ) this also happens in mail I have sent and copied myself on. The incorrect name is usually one that exist in my address book. The second part of the problem which may be related is the index for both address books will get damaged. Every few days I have to discard the address book index file ( AddressBook-v22.abcddb ) which fixes the index issue for a few days. The computers nor the applications ever crash. I wonder if the .mac syncing could be key to both computers having index issues. Rebuilding the address index does not fix the wrong name issue. Both computers are 10.5.2. I feel there is some deeper corruption issue that rebuilding that one index file does not correct. I have also rebuilt all the mail boxes.

SOLUTION: my ultimate solution to the address book confusing contact info in ichat, mail, etc. was to go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ and delete the AddressBook-v22.abcddb file. back up your contacts first!!! but after you delete and relaunch, Address Book will rebuild using the info from the Metadata folder. worked like a charm.

  • Address Book, including names with Companies.

It seems like I should be able to print out companies with the associated contact person but it seems this app. doesn't allow that. Am I missing something or is it a terrible oversight? I'm trying to do a mailing list that is addressed to various people at their workplace.
The workaround I'm currently using has me selecting "Company" and including the contact name within the address field.

I haven't printed out labels, just the list of my Address contacts on several pages. But, the Contact name appears in the left column, the contact info in the middle, and the phone in the last column. This printing does not have the Business name followed by the contacts name as the Busi
Now thinking through this, I went through the exercise of making a PDF of
this info that I created as a sample in my Address Book:
"A Sample - Being the Company
Miss Jones - Being the Contacts name
    mobile 999-xxx-xxxx
    work [email protected]
    home [email protected]
    work 333ruthere (AIM)
work 894UV Boulevard - Business ADDRRESS
    FunnyUAsk Delaware vwxyz-stuv
home 24 Thorobred Road - Home ADDRESS
    Anywhere Colorado abcde-fghi
    Note:"
After I created the PDF, it showed my own name, address, state, etc. as the return address and the A Sample as the Addressee.
Now, the Business would have to be the name on the Administrator of the Computer for this to work out, because that is the name that appears on the return address field, as thus:
    "Business Name
    Address
    City St. Zip
    A Sample
    894UV Boulevard
    FunnyUAsk, Delaware wxyz-stuv"
When you click on the word "Work" field in the Address Book, you will see a drop down menu with choices, and "Copy Mailing Label" is the middle choice.
But it is also on the out put when you check "Print" from the Address Book Menu under "File." When the Print Dialogue Box appears on your desktop, you will see toward the middle right side "Layout/Label/Orientation."
Choose "Label" and you will see your name (if you are using your personal computer, or the Administrators name/Company perhaps if you are using your companies computer.)
I see the Label section saying to choose(second choice under "Print my address", Addresses - All or home/work/other. Then Print in Alphabetical Order.
I am trying to get to my point the slow way, and I an trying to think through this to solve it.
I just unchecked the "Print my address" selection and my name from the Return Address field name is no longer present, only the Addressee.
"Miss Jones"(for example only) name doesn't appear in the Addressee's address below the Business Name unless she is listed in the Address Book as the Company as:
    "Miss Jones
    894UV Boulevard
    FunnyUAsk, Delaware wxyz-stuv"
I am having a bit of a problem getting this solved. Did I shed any light on anything that may perhaps work at all? This is definitely a puzzler. Maybe something needs to be added to the Address Book fields or another function added.

  • I would like to add a new card date field to my address Book Contacts. Is this possible? Thanks, Jeff

    Hi,
I would like to add a new card date field to my Address Book Contacts. Is there any way to do this? I have a lot of contacts and it helps me remember who I talked to, if I had a new card date field in my contacts.
    Thank you,
    Jeff

    Hi,
I found the applescript below from Michael Bach that works well.
(* Find recently modified entries in the Address Book
Input: a time interval (backwards from today) in the variable "daysBeforeToday"
Output: a string on the clipboard, format: YYYY-MM-DD (tab) Name (return)
    ©2009, Michael Bach, <www.michaelbach.de> *)
set daysBeforeToday to 7 -- <<<  change as desired or read from a dialog
    tell application "Address Book"
      copy (current date) - daysBeforeToday * 24 * minutes * 60 to referenceDate
copy (every person whose (modification date > referenceDate)) to modifiedPersons
      set s to ""
      repeat with aPerson in modifiedPersons
set d to ((modification date) of aPerson) -- now change to international format and forget the hours
        set dateString to (year of d as string) & "-" & (my twoDigits((month of d) as number)) & "-" & (my twoDigits(day of d) as string)
        set s to s & dateString & tab & (name of aPerson) & return
      end repeat
set the clipboard to s --for pasting into other applications
s -- to view immediately in the script editor
    end tell
on twoDigits(aNumber) -- trivial utility for formatting
if aNumber < 10 then return "0" & (aNumber as string)
      return (aNumber as string)
    end twoDigits
I changed the modification date to creation date.
    Thanks for the replies.

  • Address Book - Last Name Keeps Repeating Itself!!!

This has happened for quite some time, and it affects the vCards of those whom I've sent mail to.
For e.g., the To: field in Mail shows an auto-complete of my name as "Douglas Dielle Dielle".
When I go to the address book, the vCard entry indeed is shown as "Douglas Dielle Dielle".
Address Book seems to be adding the extra last name to the last name field because I don't use that field for my contacts.
I've corrected this umpteen times in the Address Book by removing the last name in the last name field and it's still happening. Cleared the previous recipients list in Mail and it's still happening.
Is there some option in the Address Book that I should take a hard look at?

Reason because Entourage some time back had this problem on filling the fields correctly when synching from my PDA. Filling in only the first name was the way to circumvent the problem.
I don't use Entourage anymore, but have also not altered the name format of my contacts in my PDA though.
Hope Apple fixes this soon! (Mail version: 2.0.5 / 746/746.2)

how can I send an email to a group in my address book, but hide the individual names and email addresses?

You used to be able to do this through leaving unchecked the box in preferences "when sending to a group show all member addresses". However, that feature failed some time ago (two or three years?) and the only way to hide the addresses now is to put the group in the BCC field.
