Mail - Search always returns All mail entries

When I use the Search facility in Mail to try and find some specific mails I know I have amongst my many thousand of mails, i just can't get Search to return anything other than a full return of all items in the mailbox.
I'm clearly being daft somehow, but can't figure it out.
I enter single word into the search box in the top right, and it always just says 10,562 (or whatever the current number is) items, which makes no sense.  I'm using search words that should return a few hundred. I've even put in non existent words to prove the point - still get the same number 'returned'.
Sort of sensing that no search is actually taking place, or there's some overriding criteria/setting hiding somewhere.
Using current version of Yosemite including version 8.0 of Mail.
What am I missing - anyone know?
Cheers.

I was able to solve all my problems with searching in Mail with a simple process. I backed up my entire machine with Time Machine, then booted from my OS X install / restore DVD. Then selected restore from time machine backup, it rewrote my entire hard drive with the backup from time machine and upon booting back up, Mail reindexed all messages and my computer was exactly how I left it before I backed it up.
The problems I was having with mail included:
Unable to search 'entire message'
Unable to search 'entire message' when a specific inbox was selected
Able to search messages from spotlight in the Finder, but then they would disappear.
The spotlight index not being updated when new mail came in, making it unsearchable.
Plus a slew of other search in Mail problems.
Backing up and then doing a full restore from Time Machine solved all the problems.
Hope this helps,
Vince

Mac mail search function is not working. Any search term returns all records.

    hi eric. many thanks.
i will have to read these links closer but what i meant to say is that the hard drive space that was being taken up seemed like it suddenly jumped way up because i had just gotten through a process in the last month where i am storing all my My Documents data on my Mac Pro. i am doing this in order to decide whether i should just keep it ALL on my Mac Pro and use ChronoSync to sync /some/ of it to my MBP.
so if i look in the Documents folder on my Mac Pro i have a ton of folders that i have created with a ton of data. if i look in the Documents folder on my MBP there are NO folders that have data in them that i created. there are other folders such as folders that various software created but what i mean to point out is that there was a LOT of available space on my HD until recently.
i am wondering if there is some way that running the Mail re-index (it then ran some kind of "Importing" routine) or by syncing my Photostream to the MBP caused a huge jump in data on this drive. if it is the photostream sync i can just take this off or see if it will sync more selectively. if it is something to do with mac mail jumping in size i am not sure why this would happen or what to do about it.
    does that question make sense?
i mean, before i did these two operations my recollection is that i would have had 130 GB on the hard drive (really just guessing here) and now there is like 218 GB on the hard drive and i don't know where all this came from...

  • Search query returning ALL records

    DW CS3 - MS Access - ASP/VBScript
I have a search form for records to display on the same page with keywords highlighted.  The search is returning ALL records and highlighting keywords throughout rather than returning specific records with the searched word.  What am I missing?  I'm sure it's something terribly simple.....
              <input name="search" type="text" id="search" value="<%= Request.QueryString("search") %>" />
              SELECT item, item, item, item
              FROM tbl_name
WHERE item OR item OR item LIKE %MMColParam%
              ORDER BY sql_orderby, Date DESC
              Name: MMColParam
              Type: Text
              Value: Request.Querystring("search")
              Default Value: %

I was using the word "item" as an example for multiple columns without actually naming them - they are not the same.  I should've used this example:
    SELECT shoes, socks, hats, gloves
    FROM tbl_apparel
WHERE shoes OR socks OR hats LIKE %MMColParam%
    ORDER BY sql_orderby, Date DESC
In the past, I had four duplicate query parameters for four columns which worked fine.  But since I only have one search term, I thought I could eliminate three of the duplicate parameters and use just one with the OR statement.
In the past, you questioned me on this.  You stated, "You only have one search term and so all of the parameters have the same value, but DW still wants to creates 4 parameters. If you were coding this by hand you wouldn't do it that way, but DW's one-size-fits-all code generates four seperate parms. It's nothing to worry about."

  • App store search always returns to  first page

When I search the app store I am always returned to the 1st page after viewing an app description. This is very frustrating especially if there are hundreds of pages. Is there a way to get around this?

I don't know if you noticed the small left-hand arrow head on the left-hand side of black menu bar?  It took me ages to notice this..

    Beehive Workspace Client 1.5.1.3.0

  • How to always show all breadcrumb entries?

    Hi,
I have a nice breadcrumb, but I would like it to always show all entries, and then the current page entry should just be shown in bold. It this possible?
I can set the current breadcrumb bold, but can not find a way of always showing the full breadcrumb list.

I know that option, select none for arrangment and select 'kind' for sort.
But that doesn't keep the folders on top. And I like the separating line between each kind.

  • Search not returning all entries

We destroyed our search nodes and cluster on the filesystem in one of our environments and have been working with support to get them back to life. We got the node to startup and we can now search for items without getting a "cant contact search server" error. But we are not seeing enough items in the results.
We tried setting status to 4 in PTSEARCHSTATUS and PTCARDSTATUS and then running a search repair and search update. After doing this, the cards (documents) can be found but only some of the objects such as the portlets are being returned. The search update flipped the status column to a 1 on some items but not all. Communities and community pages are not showing up but portlets are.
    Any ideas?

    Its working now.
It turns out that the magic number for the PTSEARCHSTATUS table's status column is 1. PTCARDSTATUS takes a 4.
After setting this and running search update (no repair needed) all admin objects were reindexed.

  • Spotlight Search not returning future calendar entries

I upgraded both my iPod touch and iPhone to 3.0. When I do a search for Doctors name to find both past and future appointments on my calendar, Spotlight only returns the past appointments. I know that the future appointment is in my calendar. Anyone else had this problem? If so how did you fix it?

I'm having the same issue. Haven't found an answer yet. I have multiple appointments with the same person and I can find them when I search within the Calendar application (6 appointments), but when I use Spotlight from the main menu and put in the exact same search terms, I get 4 appointments returned.
I would assume it would show all appointments or at lease give you an option that says "Show all Appointments..."

  • Search not returning all results

I'm having a problem with searching a RAID volume on an G5 Xserve running 10.5.7. It doesn't seem to be returning search results correctly. I've tested it by making folders and searching for them over the course of several days, but haven't been able to find them again by file name. I've tried erasing the index file using the mdutil -E, but it hasn't helped. Any one have any ideas?

  • Update mail entries in Directory server 5.2

    Hi All,
we have a request of updating mail addresses.. that to only after @. our server have around 650000 entries.
One solution we are thinking of is exporting the database... changing the entries and importing again
Can any one help me with any simple solution for this? or any script?
    Thanks
    Sridhar

Assuming you take the approach of exporting and importing and you are changing all mail entries to the same new domain name and you are using the standard "mail" attribute you could do the following:
Export your data to LDIF. Say for example you call the LDIF file "old.ldif". Then run the following sed command:
sed 's/^mail:\ \(.*\)@\(.*\)/mail:\ \[email protected]/g' old.ldif > new.ldifThe "new.ldif" file will have all the email addresses with "@newdomain.com" in them. You could then import new.ldif.
As etst123 mentioned if you are in a replicated environment you may then have to re-initialize your consumers after your import even if your initial export included replica information.
One other thing. If you have static mail groups with users that have the old domain you will need to modify those as well.

  • Calendar search fails to return all hits

    I'm using Calendar under OS-X 10.9.2.
When searching for all events with a certain word, it is clear that not all events are being returned. There seems to be no logic to the ones that are omitted. I'm estimating only about a third of events matching my search criteria are being returned. I tried re-indexing with mdimport to no avail. I can see the events that contain the word I'm searching for, but not all of them turn up. It's very frustrating. The Calendars are iCloud based and synced to my Mac. And of course, there's no search function at all in the Web based Calendar either.
If search is unreliable, this makes Calendar nearly useless.

Well to be fair, those two searches could very well return those results..
searching a database with key like 'Taylor%' and with key like '%Taylor%' are different search criteria, the first is a bit more restrictive so I would expect less returns.
The real question is... are there really more than 20 entries whose key starts with the string "Taylor"? If indeed you dump the database and find that there are 86 entries whose key starts with the string "Taylor" then its time to complain to Sun.

  • Delegated User Search returns first 200 entries only...?

    Hi Folks,
We are using Delegated user administration.  When I try to perform a search against the user base it doesn't matter what I type in for search criteria it always returns the first 200 entries starting with the letter "a".  It's almost as if it ignores the search criteria I entered.  For example I can enter "W*" in the search field, select user from the drop down and perform a search.  It returns only the first 200 entries starting with "a".
    We are EP6.0 on SP13 for NW04.
    Anyone have any ideas?
I would greatly appreciate any help.

    hi,
    User Management Properties (sapum.properties)
The property file sapum.properties contains properties controlling the configuration of SAP User Management Engine. The installer creates the settings in sapum.properties based on input made during the installation process. You can modify this file after installation.
If you are using User Management Engine with SAP Enterprise Portal, you can edit the properties file in the user management configuration tool.
The default value is 200 and to change it you have to edit it.

  • HT201269 how do I merge multiple duplicate contact entries with cell home and e-mail entries

how do I merge multiple duplicate contact entries with cell home and e-mail entries?

    Try linking cards:
Open any contact you want to merge, tap on Edit and look at the bottom part of it.  You'll find 'Link Cards' and from there you may select the contact you want to link with the one you're looking at. So if you have:
    Contact 1: John A (job)
Contact 2:  Business Name (who is also John A but you saved it as a different contact)
Contact 3: Something else that's also John A
You can link all three cards into one.  If you choose to, you may unlink them at any time, just tap Edit and then the red circle. Your contacts won't be deleted, but they won't appear under the same ID anymore.

  • Linux client not returning all entries from LDAP

We have Solaris and Linux systems using ODS 11.1.1.5.0 for login authentication. The Solaris clients see all the users with no problems, but the Linux systems are only seeing 2161 entries. I have SizeLimit set to 5000 and LookthroughLimit set to 30000 in ODS. There are VLV indexes created and Solaris is using them. When I do a getent passwd on Solaris I see this in the ODS logs :
    [08/May/2012:13:32:53 -0400] conn=7 op=9133 msgId=9134 - SRCH base="ou=people,o=tsg,o=ge.com" scope=2 filter="(&(tsgunixstatus=A)(|(tsgservergroup=USERS)(tsgservergroup=nec_dev)))" attrs="cn uid uidNumber gidNumber gecos description tsgunixhomedirectory tsgunixloginshell"
    [08/May/2012:13:32:53 -0400] conn=7 op=9133 msgId=9134 - SORT cn uid
    [08/May/2012:13:32:53 -0400] conn=7 op=9133 msgId=9134 - VLV 0:999:0:0 1:5857 (0)
    [08/May/2012:13:32:55 -0400] conn=7 op=9133 msgId=9134 - RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=1000 etime=2
etc, until all the entries are returned. On Linux, the same getent passwd gets this in the ODS logs :
    [08/May/2012:13:12:19 -0400] conn=8189 op=1 msgId=2 - SRCH base="ou=people,o=tsg,o=ge.com" scope=2 filter="(&(objectClass=tsgposixaccount)(&(tsgunixstatus=A)(|(tsgservergroup=USERS)(tsgservergroup=nec_dev))))" attrs="uid userPassword uidNumber gidNumber cn tsglinuxhomedirectory tsglinuxloginshell gecos description objectClass"
    [08/May/2012:13:12:26 -0400] conn=8189 op=1 msgId=2 - RESULT err=11 tag=101 nentries=2161 etime=7 notes=U
    [08/May/2012:13:12:26 -0400] conn=8189 op=2 msgId=0 - RESULT err=80 tag=120 nentries=0 etime=0
I see that Linux adds an extra (objectClass=tsgposixaccount) to the search filter, and I added VLV indexes for linux to match what is shown in the logs for the filter. The only piece I was not sure of was the Sort for the linux VLV, I used cn uid as Solaris uses.
Is there something I need to do to get the VLV's to work with Linux clients? I do not want to set my SizeLimit or LookthroughLimit to unlimited if I do not have to. The /etc/ldap.conf for linux are pretty standard. I did add a pagesize 1000 and nss_paged_results yes but neither was any help.
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Hi Jay,
just looking at the access log, the output of the first search (the one performed by the Solaris client) basically queries/handles the first 1000 records, whereas the second search (issued by the linux client) is getting far more results even though the search filter in theory is more restrictive (having a logical AND plus: &(objectClass=tsgposixaccount) )
Did you by chance implemented the nsslapd-search-tune parameter in the dse.ldif, activating bits 8 and 16? We don't see the 'notes=F' that is generally applied when filters are skipped, but it could be due to the fact that we already have the 'notes=U' for the unindexed search on (presumably: objectClass=tsgposixaccount). And in the end, the fact that one of the components of the filter is unindexed could lead to have in the result set also entries not matching the search filter.
    HTH,
    marco
