Mail Search by Date IOS 7

Hello iPaders !!!
Is there anyway I can search my emails by date ? Like show me emails before jan 2014 ! It should be really simple but no answer neither on the web nor on apple user guide

Had the same problem, and here is what I found out:
You can use a search term delimiter in the beginning of the query to limit where mail searches. By default, it searches EVERYTHING for the keyword. To search for message from somebody, type "From" and then the name (any part of it--what comes afterward is treated as a keyword(s). The results are then placed in chronological order, newest first.
To search for messages from a time period, type "February" or "Tuesday" or "February 12" and the the keyword--same result.
To search for messages from a person during a time, type "February Mary.Doe" if you know the first part of the email, or "February Mary Doe" if you do not, for instance.
Hope this helps!

I need to sort my mail searches by date Mail on my iPhone and iPad give randomly sorted mail search results. This makes search almost useless when there are many emails in the search results. Ideas as to how to correct this?

did id you ever get as solution to this? Thanks

• IOS7 mail search results appear to be random by date also where are the search parameters, from to etc..? help!

Mail search returns results by random date. Where are the mail search parameters, from,to,etc?

This is really annoying. Mail search on iOS 7 never worked, either on iPhone
4S or on iPad.
Search results are not sorted in any perceivable order. I get totally random results, with messages dating 4 years back jumping to yesterday and so on.
I have never seen Apple to respond to this issue with earnest feedback, and users are often dismissed.
I used to have to resort to my Macbook Pro to get decent results, but due to the many mail app problems on OSX, I do not rely on it anymore.
Can Apple please give feedback to this search issue on the IOS devices? It is really, REALLY crippling.

• Ios 4.1 Search Calendar data entry delayed by "Instant Search".

When attempting to enter search data into the Calendar Search Box, display of characters entered is delayed. The first character is fine, the second will hold the character display above its key for about 4 seconds and then display it in the Search Box after the +Instant Search+ results based on the first character entered have been displayed.
Entry of more characters while the second character is still "hanging" results in their keyboard clicks being delayed until the second character has been displayed in the Search Box and then they will all display too. The situation repeats itself if one restarts data entry after a pause.
I note that the same problem _does not exist_ in the +Spotlight Search+ which, in my case, is set to search all +data types+, not just the Calendar.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
Suggestions? (Other than switching to a 3rd Party calendar.)

Thanks for the suggestions. Reset was the first thing I tried - No improvement. My second thought was the data until I tried the Spotlight Search and that works fine on the same data.
I've only noticed this problem since the iOS4.1 release and will postpone an OS reload until I see if anyone else is experiencing the issue. I note that many people have already reported the initial calendar display problem that has manifested itself with this release and if Apple QA let that one through, there are probably more.

• Mail search in iOS 7 doesn't allow me to select messages from results for Exchange account

I perform an Exchange mailbox search and after getting the results I tap on Edit to select some of the messages from the listed search results but I can't select any and the options for Move, Delete and Mark are greyed out.
If I do the search on the Gmail mailbox instead, the selection circle is available, I can select individual messages and the options for moving, etc. are all available.

OK - unless a miracle happens in the next 5-10 minutes - apple's current stance on this is that we (corporate users) are going to have to work on this problem on our side of it!
I asked - so you expect hundreds, thousands of server admins (internal employee supported and hosted) to change their settings for you - rather than you changing the way the search app works? Response was YES!!!!
They recognize that it is happening as a result of the 'expanded' search functionality, that WE asked for. Uh-hum it was working before and not now - don't think we asked for that.
They say that they have no intention of fixing what's broken in the app. They consider it to not be broken - but rather improved. WOW!
They are CLEARLY catering to the 'hey where you gonna be tonight' crowd - rather than the 'We need to meet up at 3:00pm to go over these final plans so that I can authorize the next phase of building.' and the 'Go ahead and plan for the 2 mergers we discussed to move forward - I am canceling the third, though' crowd.
Yes - I am venting.....
I am supposedly being transferred to the 'enterprise support team' now. Tech tells me I never mentioned that it was an 'enterprise' issue. I'm like - really - exchange account - and I mentioned the corporate impact of the problem from the beginning. Anyway - we'll see where I get.
Just FYI - their search tool is supposedly returning these results because ALL of our servers are searching and seeing a server setting that allows it to search historical info ON the server. He says it happened this way in io6 - but it did not (thus we searched fine before and not now). I have two users (iPhone 5) who upgraded and have the problem - and one user (iPhone 5) who has not upgraded and does not have the problem.
OK - just got off the phone with apple. I was just transferred to the enterprise team - who said that rackspace could pay $700 and then apple would look into the problem. No, I am not joking. I recommend that you all continue to post your problems with the mail search as often as possible - and hopefully apple will take some responsibility and fix the issue on the app side - rather than asking us to all supposedly fix it on the server side.
I am contacting my exchange server admin to see if there is in fact a setting that will 'fix' the ghosting of the emails. If there is in fact a server side work around - I will post back. If apple gets smart and decides that fixing broken corporate features matters to them - I will also post back.
Any suggestions from the IT world reading this?

• E-Mail search misses e-mails

When using the search function in the mail app (IOS 8.1.3) within "all inboxes" using the name of the sender "Smith" the search delivers a long list of e-mails sorted by date from the newest to the oldest. It shows more results when "All Mailboxes" is active, of course less when "Current Mailbox" (I guess in this case "all inboxes") is active.
I am missing an E-mail in the search result. When I try the search in the correct folder "Archive" the search delivers that particular E-Mail.
Why is the search function when used from "all inboxes" with the radio button "All Mailboxes" not delivering that result. Does it only refer to E-Mails within all inboxes? If yes, how do I search all folders of all mailboxes? The general search from the home screen is much less helpful than the search within the mail app.
Thank you!

I've been unable to search email "message" body ever since getting Verizon. I can search fine by sender, subject, etc, but when I try to search "message" I get a Verizon error message (not a browser error) stating: "We were unable to perform your request. Please try again." I've called tech support, and they tried to say this is some sort of broswer issue. It ISN'T, because again this is a verizon message coming up, and the other searches work fine. This has never worked in MONTHS, and I'm about ready to switch to another provider, since I need to be able to search my emails. UGGGH......

• IPhone e-mail search trouble

When I use the search box in the iPhone e-mail program my results are displayed for a few seconds, but then they disappear as if there are no results for my search. I can repeat the search, but the same thing happens. I am using the most up to date IOS and the problem does not manifest itself on my iPad or Mac. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the same issue, as well when I go to search an email might come up that I want to view and I select it the header is the correct email but the body of the email is a totally different unrelated email.

• Mail search doesn't work

Hi
After upgrading to Yosemite, when I go into the search box in the upper right hand corner it doesn't select mail that meets the criteria. I can type anything in and it will find 5462 items and many of those don't contain the search word(s). What can I do to get Mail search working?
I run a Mac Book Pro about 3.5 years old.
David

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
Envelope Index
ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

• Apple Mail search misses many items

Regarding searching within Apple Mail
I will search on emails from, say, "Fred Smith" and get a bunch of results that won't include an email that I know that I just got from Fred Smith. Nowhere to be seen. Then I'll scroll down through my messages and find the message... exactly from Fred Smith. But not showing up in Apple Mail search.
Or, and I see this one a lot lately: I'll search "Entire Message" for "Fred Smith" and get a bunch of results that don't include the email that I know is there. Then I'll switch to "From" suddenly the missing message appears.
For me, for years now, Apple Mail is HORRIBLY unreliable in its searching. I still use it, because I like other parts of it, but I don't ever expect the search to actually turn up items that are there...
Anyone know why / what's going on, or how I might fix this, or whether there's a new version of Mail coming with 10.5 that might fix this?

That a message was sent by Fred Smith doesn’t necessarily mean that “Fred Smith” appears anywhere in the message, not even if Mail shows his name in the From column or message header when displaying that message. If you do View > Message > Raw Source on one of the messages that aren’t included in the search results, do you actually see “Fred Smith” anywhere?
and I see this one a lot lately: I'll search "Entire Message" for "Fred Smith"
and get a bunch of results that don't include the email that I know is there.
Then I'll switch to "From" suddenly the missing message appears.
Mail uses Spotlight for Entire Message searches only, and its own index for the rest. What you’re describing here would indicate there is something wrong with Spotlight’s indexing of your mail rather than with Mail itself...
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command and press <Return> (you can copy the command here and paste it in Terminal):
sudo mdutil -E -i on /
The -E option tells Spotlight to delete any already existing index data (so that it’s rebuilt from scratch all over again). The -i on option ensures that indexing is enabled. Finally, the ‘/’ at the end means “apply this command to the startup disk”.
After entering the previous command in Terminal, you’ll be prompted for your administrator password. Type it blindly (you won’t see any feedback of the keystrokes while you type it) and press <Return>.
Alternatively, you may prefer to reindex the startup disk using the following procedure, but I’ve seen cases where using Teminal worked whereas doing what the article suggests didn’t:
Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
While you’re on it, make sure Mail Messages is checked in the Search Results pane of System Preferences > Spotlight and that no folders containing mail data appear in the Privacy pane.
For best results, quit Mail and don’t play too much with your disk while Spotlight reindexes it, i.e. avoid files being created/modified/deleted, mail being downloaded, etc.

• Mac mail search function is not working. Any search term returns all records.

Mac mail search function is not working. Any search term returns all records.

hi eric. many thanks.
i will have to read these links closer but what i meant to say is that the hard drive space that was being taken up seemed like it suddenly jumped way up because i had just gotten through a process in the last month where i am storing all my My Documents data on my Mac Pro. i am doing this in order to decide whether i should just keep it ALL on my Mac Pro and use ChronoSync to sync /some/ of it to my MBP.
so if i look in the Documents folder on my Mac Pro i have a ton of folders that i have created with a ton of data. if i look in the Documents folder on my MBP there are NO folders that have data in them that i created. there are other folders such as folders that various software created but what i mean to point out is that there was a LOT of available space on my HD until recently.
i am wondering if there is some way that running the Mail re-index (it then ran some kind of "Importing" routine) or by syncing my Photostream to the MBP caused a huge jump in data on this drive. if it is the photostream sync i can just take this off or see if it will sync more selectively. if it is something to do with mac mail jumping in size i am not sure why this would happen or what to do about it.
does that question make sense?
i mean, before i did these two operations my recollection is that i would have had 130 GB on the hard drive (really just guessing here) and now there is like 218 GB on the hard drive and i don't know where all this came from...

• Spotlight and Mail searches

I have just replaced my 2007 MP with a shiny new one, (garbage can someone described it to me) !
The computer is responding a bit slowly entering text into Safari fields, i.e. logging into sites, username & passwords - I type out a word and it takes seconds to appear in the box.
Also searches in Mail & Spotlight do not yield any results and judging by other posts on the subject, is probably down to Spotlight indexing the 3TB of data on the Pegasus drive.
I did not migrate any files over from my old MP as I wanted to keep a clean new drive.(I did this initially but ended up in a mess so had to erase the disk and reinstall Yosemite) I have reinstalled the majority of my apps that were on the old machine from the app store and note a significant difference in the sizes of the Libraries :
Old MP New MP
Library 88gb 6 gb
User library 33gb 11 gb
So some questions arising that hopefully someone will answer :-
Doing a spotlight search of the Pegasus drive - there is no progress bar (as noted in other posts) - there is a message that just says "Searching Promise". So presumably it is indexing the drive. Not sure how long it will take to do 3TB of data (a lot of video)
Mail - doing a search in Mail does not do anything, no dropdown etc. I presume that this is using Spotlight and once that is indexed then a Mail search should work?
Is there a way to migrate specific apps from my old MP?
I am wondering why such a big difference between the libraries on the 2 machines.
Thanks & regards

• Mail search fix?

• Mac Mail Search Not Working

Okay, among the LONG list of things not working since the update, is the Mac Mail search function. I will type in a search for emails from someone (eg. my son, partner, BFF, etc. who email me all the time), and either the system can't find emails from him, can only find ones sent years ago, or produces a list that is not in newest to oldest order (dates all mixed up).
I really rely on my being able to use my mail easily for personal and work use. It's really sad when my other mailbox (Outlook) is working better than mac mail.
Any advice?

• Reinstall SLS saving calendar, mail & other user data

I have apparently sustained some kind of attack on the web portion of my server, whereby whenever I access it externally I get directed to a site that has an expired/unvalidated SSL certificate. I can access everything inside my network just fine, but from outside it's getting redirected to this external site. This is now affecting my calendar and mail server.
I am considering reinstalling the entire server, assuming that there is some malicious code inserted somewhere. How can I save all of the user names, permissions etc. but more importantly save the mail and calendar data that has collected in the various user accounts, and upon reinstall of the server (after erasing the disk) reassociate the directories containing that data with the user accounts? I can see the directories but they have a UUID-type identifier associated with them, and I don't see anything within Server Admin or Workgroup Manager that would allow me to point to those directories.
Is this as simple as backing up my OD settings from Workgroup Manager, then after reinstall importing those settings, then putting the directories back in place?
Thanks -

Ok, thanks for your post MrH, it turns out that it wasn't my OSX server that was hacked but my Uverse 2wire gateway. I had been trying to switch from a personal ssl certificate that I put on the server to a signed certificate, when I noticed that an expired certificate that didn't belong to me would appear each time I went to the site on port 443. The certificate was self signed by "Mini Webservice Ltd". My suspicion was that my apache2 implementation had been hijacked and this certificate was the product of the hijacking. Having not found anything on the server despite a pretty thorough search, I resolved to reinstall everything, and hence my question.
Each time I googled the certificate issuer though I kept getting a site that listed several AT&T ip addresses, and certificate details that were identical to the one I was seeing. Here's an example: http://dazzlepod.com/ip/99.120.101.68/.
Also today for the first time I found some code in a code repository with these same certificate details in them, associated with "mini_httpd", a small web server that runs on unix appliances. Here is the code site: http://projects.plentyfact.org/repositories/entry/btoy/btoy/trunk/utils/mini-htt pd-1.19/mini_httpd.cnf?rev=55.
I began to suspect that someone had inserted this program or one like it on my router. So I turned off port 443 forwarding to my OS X server and went back to the site from an external VPN connection, and sure enough it still came up with the false certificate.
So here's what I think is happening, and why your comments helped.
The uverse router comes stock with an all numerical ~10 digit password, and the option to prevent excessive session detection is not enabled by default. So I am guessing that someone cracks the router password through a brute force attack and then installs this web server to do who knows what. I can't figure out how they did that, but I'm going to let AT&T know and cogitate on that one.
So, following your advice I did a hard reset to defaults and reboot, and immediately changed the password and enabled excessive session detection. Viola, no problem accessing 443 on my server, and my new signed certificate even works. For now.
So word to the uverse unwise - change your router password to something complicated and enable excessive session detection under Settings - Firewall - Advanced Configuration. Someone is actively putting a bogus web server on uverse boxes.
Final note - I know, you're thinking "uverse? 2wire gateway?" It's a server i use for our family and for me to learn on, and guess what - I've just learned a lot.

• IOS8 Mail search bug, duplicates in random order!

Does anyone know of a fix for iOS mail search duplicate results, in random order?
When searching in Mail on iOS 8 (and iOS 7 before), on an Exchange 2010 hosted account (like Rackspace) the search results are all duplicated, and in random order, making Mail search almost useless, and very frustrating for business users.
I've reported this through Apple's official bug report website, and repeatedly been told my report matches other's previously reported bug reports, and so my reports are Closed... but never Fixed! My understanding of what happens is, Spotlight searches the locally-stored Mail, then sends the search request to the server via ActiveSync, and of course duplicate results come back (since it is synced email, duh!) but iOS doesn't resolve the duplicates, and then puts them in random order. This doesn't seem to happen for IMAP, but business users don't always have a choice, and need to connect via ActiveSync for work, and always need to search mail given the quantity... Please Apple, email and email search are still central to mobile devices, especially for business users. Please fix!

I have the same problem and in addition I see search results with blue dots indicating they are drafts, however they appear to be have the same text content as the versions of the emails that were sent (and are also showing up in the search results). When I click through to that email from the search results it opens as a draft email ready to be (re) sent. I don't know if these are partially complete drafts that were saved somewhere while I was writing the email (an issue I saw referred to regarding OSX Mail app search result problems).
The outcome is I often see 5-6 versions of the same email showing up in search results rendering the spotlight search useless. This is a major issue for me as ease of search was a big plus for me as a blackberry user, and in finally making the transition to IP6 /iOS 8 I am really frustrated in not being able to find emails quickly through search.
I raised this with the head of the genius bar at our local store and he had no ideas on it and had not seen the problem before.
