Mail search field bug

Help help! (And my english is not super duper. I hope I can explain problem)
My Mail search will only look in the fields 'To', 'Cc' or 'Bcc' when given something to search for.
If I search for a topic or a thing, nothing comes up, and names does not show up if the name is in the 'From' field. It is really frustrating.
Anyone knows anything about this bug? I have made my spotlight reindex itself, that did not help. I am wondering if there are any preferences for the mail search field that I can reset somewhere or what???
Hoping to get help
Hanna

Same problem, very frustrating.  Even resorted to a clean install and the problem persists.  10.9.1 (also in 10.9.2 btw).

  • Looking for complete list of attributes to search on in Mail Search field

I have been digging for hours and other than the few examples in Mail's help file, I can't find a complete list of attributes to search on when doing ad-hoc searches in Mail's search field.
The ones I know of are to:, author:, subject:, kind:, date:, size:, modified:
There are also quite a few synonyms like from:, by:, to:, recipient:, etc.
But where is the complete list? Arghh!!
Any pointers would be much appreciated, or maybe folks can just append the keywords they know to work here?
I'd love to find one that does the equivalent of mailbox:foldername

Launch Script Editor (in /Applications/AppleScript/), paste in this script, select Event Log, run it, and get Mail's properties:'
    tell application "System Events"
    get properties of application "Mail"
    end tell
Alternatively, Script Editor->Window->Library-> add Mail's dictionary to the listing and then double-click on it.

  • Is this a "search field" bug?

    hello,
“.Mac blog” have publicized that by adding the "search field" to an iWeb site, that field will only show up (be visible) in the "archive". It works like that for the Safari browser, but when it comes to using Internet Explorer or Firefox, the field can be seen in the blog's main page! (as in iWeb).
is this a bug? i really prefer to see the "search field" only in the "archive"...
anyone knows how to fix this?
    thanks
    http://web.mac.com/pedroesteves

Well spotted, Pedro. I must admit that I don't have a problem with the search field appearing on both the Summary and the Archive pages, but I hadn't realised until you pointed it out that it can't be deleted selectively from one only. In all fairness, though, I find the .Mac Blog genuinely helpful, and it contains quite a few useful entries which relate to iWeb. They do have a Feedback link, and I'm sure they'd welcome comments about this.

  • Mail search feature not working

Not a good day today but to top it off, my Mail search feature doesn't seem to be working.  In the past I've praised OSX Mail search features and enjoyed the instant results all whilst bashing the inop feature Outlook and Notes try to utilize.  I'm afraid to say the OSX Lion Mail search feature is completely non-functional.  As I was searching for this issue through the support topics, I noticed this very topic appear then quickly disappear.  I couldn't duplicate the search again for anything.  Hmm.
Also, what's the dealy with opening a PDF in Mail with Preview and your last 5 PDF's open as well?  Uncool.  And I want Safari to open with my Home page, not the last page I visited.
At least the Spotlight will still identify the messages I'm wrangling for.
No need to reply... just need to vent a bit.

A lot of things are broken in LION. Not recommended for professionals (only iPad users).
But here's a way to make better use of Mail Search:
In the new Mac LION MAIL app, it's not apparent that you can search for any part of any email address the way you could before with any previous OS, for when you type partial email text in the MAIL search field, it simply gives you a drop-down list of wrong or limited suggestions and none of the suggestions are email addresses, but people's names. I don't want to search by name, I want to search by email address. (Maybe I'm the only one who does this.) If two different email addresses have the same associated name (which I have), it chooses the wrong one and searches for the wrong email address!
    But there is a way:
    1) Select the mailbox you want to search (if any).
    2) Type in the search field:
              to: any_string ["return" or "enter"]
              OR
              from: any_string ["return" or "enter"]
    3) Your entry will change from this:
    to this:
    4) Notice that after you press "return" or "enter", your "to:" (or "from:") becomes a pull-down-menu button and the MAIL's silly choices go away. If you click the button, you get this:
and you can change your choice.
    3) Strangely, "to:" or "from:" MUST be ALL lowercase for this change to take place. (It will still work if "To:" and "FroM:" are all or part uppercase, but the change to a menu button will not occur.)
    4) On the menu bar below the toolbar, you will see the places to search ("All…Selected mailbox…Inbox…Drafts…Sent…Flagged")
    Hello Lara_Croft.
Again, this time with your original fix.  This works for me..  big help until Apple gets this squared away.

  • Finder search bug? No results if 'Search' field is blank.

I can't determine if this is a bug or is simply a change in Finder search behavior (for the worse, IMO) in 10.8.
In the Finder, when I select 'File>>Find' (or hit ⌘-F) and then select the current folder from the top of the search parameters, no files appear in the search results if the 'Search' (for filename) field at the top of the window is blank even though the only other search parameter is 'Kind is Any'.
If I enter text in the 'Search' field, matching results start to appear.
In 10.7, I saw different behavior. In the absence of text in the Search field, the Finder would simply return results matching the other parameters and ignore the Search field.
With the new behavior, there doesn't seem to be any way to construct a saved search based solely on other parameters (kind, date, file label, etc) without specifying some filename parameter as well. Of course, I can work around the problem by using something like 'NOT xxx!@#$%' in the Search field, but this approach is klugy at best.
Anyone else see this? Bug? Deliberate change in Finder behavior?

Yes the report ESH_TEST_SEARCH returns no material.
So should I suspend the indexing and reschedule with with real time indexing ? I am not sure whether we choose real time indexing in the first time.
What about the authorizations, I see USER_AUTHORITY object is activealready.
    Thanks

  • Can't drag and drop email addresses into Mail's search field

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I am no longer able to grab an email address from "To:" and "CC:", and drag it to the seach field in Mail. The green + sign shows up like it's going to add the address, but when I release the mouse button, the search field is left blank.

... and re-typing the whole address works for my Mom. I, however, prefer increased functionality with my upgrades, not the other way around.

  • Controlling within mini-player clears search field - annoying bug

I've come across this annoying (repeatable) bug with iTunes 9... when I listen to music, I like to put an artist's name in the search field, then just let it play on shuffle from those search results. Typically no big deal, however, if I switch to the mini-player, then use any of the controls (play, forward, back) on the mini-player, the search field gets cleared out and it's just playing through the entire library. It's annoying to have to re-enter what was in the search field when it clears like this.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is there a way to fix it? So far I'm just being careful not to touch the controls in the mini-player while listening to a selection narrowed down from the library with the search field.

As a work-around, there is a freeware program that allows full iTunes control from the OS X menu bar which will avoid the need for using the mini player. You can close the iTunes window while leaving the program running and your search will remain intact. Get it here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/youcontroltunes.html

  • IOS8 Mail search bug, duplicates in random order!

Does anyone know of a fix for iOS mail search duplicate results, in random order?
When searching in Mail on iOS 8 (and iOS 7 before), on an Exchange 2010 hosted account (like Rackspace) the search results are all duplicated, and in random order, making Mail search almost useless, and very frustrating for business users.
I've reported this through Apple's official bug report website, and repeatedly been told my report matches other's previously reported bug reports, and so my reports are Closed... but never Fixed! My understanding of what happens is, Spotlight searches the locally-stored Mail, then sends the search request to the server via ActiveSync, and of course duplicate results come back (since it is synced email, duh!) but iOS doesn't resolve the duplicates, and then puts them in random order. This doesn't seem to happen for IMAP, but business users don't always have a choice, and need to connect via ActiveSync for work, and always need to search mail given the quantity... Please Apple, email and email search are still central to mobile devices, especially for business users. Please fix!

I have the same problem and in addition I see search results with blue dots indicating they are drafts, however they appear to be have the same text content as the versions of the emails that were sent (and are also showing up in the search results). When I click through to that email from the search results it opens as a draft email ready to be (re) sent. I don't know if these are partially complete drafts that were saved somewhere while I was writing the email (an issue I saw referred to regarding OSX Mail app search result problems).
The outcome is I often see 5-6 versions of the same email showing up in search results rendering the spotlight search useless. This is a major issue for me as ease of search was a big plus for me as a blackberry user, and in finally making the transition to IP6 /iOS 8 I am really frustrated in not being able to find emails quickly through search.
I raised this with the head of the genius bar at our local store and he had no ideas on it and had not seen the problem before.

  • Search field in App Store [iPad 4]

    Hi,
I might have identified a software defect on my iPad after upgrading to iOS 7. I'm not sure if this is a feature of App Store or a glitch. Below are the steps to reproduce the behaviour.
    Steps:
    1. Start the App Store app on your iPad
    2. Touch the search field, enter any word(s) and hit Enter.
    3. Try clearing the search field using the (x) sign.
    4. Switch to another tab within App Store
    5. Repeat steps 2-4
    Expected / actual result:
    1. App Store is started -> OK
    2. App Store lists the apps matching your search string -> OK
    3. Text field is cleared -> OK
    4. Text field contains the latest search string -> NOK
    5. The old search string is cleared but instead the new search string is displayed even after clearing the text field and switching to another tab within App Store. -> NOK
    Conclusion:
It seems that the search string is stored permanently until a new search string is entered. It doesn't matter how many times you clear the search field. The latest string is always there. Is this the expected behaviour? Because when I perform these steps on my iPhone 4 using iOS 7 this effect is not reproduceable.
    Best regards,
    Anton

As promised earlier, I am posting back with my findings and have figured out how to clear this field. This was successful on both the iPad 2 and "The New iPad" 3rd gen.
I do not know if this is a permanent fix and am not going to go out of my way to duplicate the bug. If I search an app from the app store on the iPad, I will avoid doing so from the Purchased or Updates tabs at all costs and do so from either Featured, Top Charts, or Explore - none of which seem to be bugged.
    Under Settings/General/Reset: Reset All Settings.
You will have to log back in to iMessage and Facetime which seemed a little quirky. You will also need to set your wifi back up so if you have a static IP set, take note of your settings first. There are some general Mail, Contacts, Calendars settings that will need to be set back the way you prefer. It may remove Passcode lock. If you use Reduced Motion under Accessibility, that will need to be turned on again. There could be some other settings as well but those are the main ones. All of your data, accounts, and apps are secure and will not be changed.
Your settings will reset, your device will power cycle, and the bugged search box in the app store on the Purchased and Updates tabs will be cleared once again.
Please let me know how this works for you guys and if you dare to duplicate the issue, what triggers it? Searching and installing an app? Simply searching for an app? Perhaps the issue is gone under the new iOS and can no longer be duplicated?
I don't know, but for you Type A's out there, enjoy the clear search bar!

  • Mail search no longer works after 10.7.2 upgrade

The search field in the upper right hand corner no longer returns any results, from any mailbox, regardless of the text I type in.  This was working fine until I upgraded to 10.7.2.  I absolutely rely on the search feature as my mail messages are a wealth of information for me.
    Help!
    Brian

I've managed to get it working after trying the following:
    1. Used Disk Utility to repair permissions on my main drive
    2. In Terminal used the comand "sudo mdutil -v -i on /"
That tells spotlight to turn indexing on for that drive.
    3. Did a restart
I'd recommend trying the permissions and a restart first and if that doesn't help then try the command line fix.
The first time I ran it without -v so got no feedback on what it was doing. Stopping it and trying to do it again gave me the message "Error: Index is already changing state.  Please try again in a moment." After the restart it now says:
    Indexing enabled.
Scan base time: 2011-10-19 07:40:10 +0100 (60 seconds ago), reasoning: 'scan not required - avoided catchup scan'
Now mail is back to how it was before the 10.7.2 update, happy days.

  • Cmd+v doesn't paste in the file upload dialogue's search field in Safari

In Safari 4.0.4 on OS X 10.6.2, cmd+v doesn't paste in the file upload dialogue's search field in Safari. It just makes an audio beep to indicate an error.
    Using a sample file uploader:
    1.) Visit http://upload.youtube.com/myvideosupload
2.) Click the "Upload Video" button.
    3.) Select file(s) to upload to s.ytimg.com
4.) Click on the search text field
*5.) Cmd+V to paste text. Nothing happens.*
However, if you right-click, "Paste" is not grayed out, and you can paste normally.
This is for version 4.0.4, but this behavior has been present for as long as I can remember using Safari.
    Can anyone confirm this bug?

    HI,
I can't confirm a bug but you can report it.
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Report Bugs to Apple.

  • Mail search doesn't work at all / disabled?

I had some spotlight issues and the index was successfully rebuilt.  Mail however, still has a disabled search functionality.  If I enter a term in the upper right search field no results appear.  Rebooting and restoring Mail don't help.  Mail is not excluded in the system prefs spotlight settings.
    Any idea?

    Step 1
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -F '$Time $Message' -k Sender mdworker -o -k Message Rne Norm -k Sender mds | tail | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
    mdutil -as 2>&- | pbcopy
    You can then quit Terminal.
    Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs—they're very long and not helpful.

  • Adobe Help CS5: Text In Search Field Hard To Read

I'm using Local Help. In the Search field, letters are way too close and very hard to read. There seems to be no anti-aliasing either. Is it possible that some font be missing in either my Photoshop Installation or in my System (OX 10.6.3)?

Hi Roger:  I apologize for the poor text rendering.  We are updating the app with a fix -- this should be resolved when the engineering team migrates the app to Flex 4/AIR 2 (coming soon!).
    Hello Mark!
If I may, the fact that people like you take the time to answer questions like this does more for Adobe's reputation than anything else. Thank you. I will be waiting for this fix. After all this new Help app is way better than what we had before, as it allows us to use either Local help (way faster and practical) or the web (more complete, when we're stuck). So this is a step forward, I just found strange that Adobe had this problem in that field. I imagine that this bug sneaked by unnoticed...
So thank you once again. If I had a suggestion, it would be to make the process of finding and downloading Local help a bit easier and more transparent.
