Mail sees the number of .Mac mail messages, but not anything else about 'em

Pretty straight forward problem.
Mail says I have .Mac mail on all of my .Mac accounts yet when I click on them in Mail they cannot be seen in the list.
ALL SOFTWARE IS UP TO DATE/LATEST AVAILABLE.
Do ports have to be opened up for Mail to work? If so, how do people like me with five computers in their house each use Mail?
In the left pane under the INBOX, I see all of my accounts.
For one/my/main .Mac account, I hear the chime of NEW MAIL and see the red circle/dot with the number of new mails.
When I click on the .Mac account, the right/upper pane shows nothing - it is blank.
All of my other myriad of pop/imap accounts defined in the mail.app work perfectly well.
.Mac mail accounts.
email accounts from .Mac.
Family pack gives a person five accounts. I mentioned that so that it the fact it happens with all the subaccounts and all my computers would eliminate any individual account and any individual computer from being significantly different than any other typical setup and thus eliminate them from being the focus on any suggested fix.

I'd suggest creating a new test user account from the system preferences. Log in, open Mail, enter your .Mac settings and see how it goes.
Alternatively, you can try to reset Mail.app by renaming (for backup purposes) the following files: (This will affect your other mailboxes as well!)
Preferences: your_name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
& Mail folder: your_name/Library/Mail/
Assuming a new Mail setup actually works, post back in case you need help on importing your old POP3 messages.
If not, I've no idea what to do... Your firewall should not affect .Mac behavior. (I got to admit, I don't particularly like Mail.app's buggy IMAP implementation.)
Good luck!

  • Can I bounce mail from the web based mac mail?

Am starting to get some spam and rather than download to mail and then bounce I would prefer to bounce straight from my mac account on the web. Is it possible. Have looked but can see no icon or action to do it.
    cheers

Never bounce spam! Spammers don't use valid return addresses, and a bounced message will usually further victimize the owner of the faked address. It will never do any good.

You cant with the new version.  It pulls all messages that are on the server.  You can leave feedback requesting it back and hope they hear the many requests http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Why is the number of e-mails higher on my iPhone than in my e-mail when I log into it from my computer?  And how do I fix it?  The number keeps climbing on my phone, making the difference between the two greater.

    You're welcome.
In order to have the account's Sent mailbox synchronized with the server with the Mail.app on your Mac and with the iPhone's Mail application, you must store the account's Sent mailbox on the server with each. The same applies to the account's Drafts and Trash mailboxes.
With store sent messages on the server deselected for the account preferences with the Mail.app on your Mac, create an "On My Mac" location mailbox. At the Mail.app menu bar go to Mailbox and select New Mailbox. Choose On My Mac for the mailbox location - which will be stored locally on your computer's hard drive and enter a name for the mailbox. You can name this mailbox MobileMe Sent. Select OK to create the mailbox, which will be available under "On My Mac" in the Mail.app mailboxes drawer.
Select your MobileMe Sent mailbox. Select a sent message in the mailbox and at the menu bar go to Edit and choose Select All. Follow this - at the Mail.app menu bar go to Message and select Move To and then select the new On My Mac location mailbox in the window provided. This will move all messages from the account's locally stored sent mailbox to the newly created On My Mac location mailbox. When this transfer has been completed, re-select store sent messages on the server for the account preferences.
Now do the same with the newly created On My Mac location mailbox where all sent messages were transferred to. Select a message in the mailbox and at the menu bar go to Edit > Select All. At the menu bar go to Message > Move To and select your MobileMe account's server stored Sent mailbox under Sent in the window provided. This will transfer all messages stored locally on your computer's hard drive from the newly created "On My Mac" location mailbox to the account's server stored Sent mailbox. These messages will no be available when accessing the account with the iPhone's Mail application.

I'm using the latest version of mail but not very good in dealing with computer problems.  My email supplier is Bt Internet.
    Can anyone help

I have seen something similar once. A message on the mail server was corrupted and the download would never complete, but would always start the next time I launched Mail. It was the oldest message, so Mail always started with it, blocking all other mail. Deleting the file on the server was the solution. Don't know if that fits your situation. Good luck. BTW, I called my ISP's tech support and they watched the server's actions and could see that the file was not actually transferring. Give yours a call.

  • Where's the conversation in mac mail?

Where's the conversation in mac mail? Like in Gmail. Mac Mail in conversation mode only shows one side of the 'conversation'. You have to go to the sent folder to the see the other side. Anyone know of way to change the view? Sparrow mail even has both sides of the conversation in the in box. Surprised mail is lacking this.

Go to Preferences > Viewing and check "Include Related Messages". Mail randomly turned this off for me recently and I had to find it and turn back on.

  • Was wondering if it is possible to sync the folders in mac mail on my imac to my mac book pro rather than recreating them

was wondering if it is possible to sync the folders in mac mail on my imac to my mac book pro rather than recreating them

There are two standard protocols for receiving email, POP and IMAP. In the POP (Post Office Protocol) when messages are "read" by your email client (Mail) they are downloaded and stored on the reading computer and deleted from the POP server. When you are using IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) the messages remain on the IMAP server until they are deleted. IMAP was created for exactly the situation you are trying to achieve. For example Apple's iCloud (formerly me.com, formerly mac.com) uses IMAP protocol. So whether I access my email on my Mac, my iPhone, my iPad, or via webmail I have access to all the files in all the various mailboxes automatically because they are all seeing and using the same online mailboxes. If I delete a message on any of the varioius devices it is deleted on all of the various devices.
Whether you can use IMAP protocol or not depends on your email host and whether they have an IMAP server or not. Many ISPs do not offer IMAP because they do not want to bear the expense of the additional disk space required to store the IMAP messages. As I mentioned before Apple's free email service is by default IMAP. Google Mail offers a somewhat non-standard IMAP service. It works with Apple's email client, Mail, but it is just a bit "different".
Personally I resisted using IMAP for years. Largely because I had always used POP and was comfortable with it. Once I got an iPhone and needed to synch my email between my computer and iPhone I realized IMAP was "the only way to go."

  • Mac mail not receiving mail timely - through the web or mac mail on computer

for the past few days - my email works in the morning - then all afternoon - I can not receive email... sending is fine... then at about 7:30 at night - it all comes through - what is going on... this is ridiculous.
Mac mail on the lap top
    AND
    through web server
none are working - come on let's get this issue resolved it IS a mac mail issue Apple - fess up and fix it.

mail goes into sent folder, there is a sound as normal, there is NO error message. i verify by send a copy to me or to my colleagues
A sent message moved to the account's Sent mailbox indicates the message was successfully sent by the SMTP server used to send messages with the account. If the message cannot be sent for whatever reason, the message will remain in the Outbox mailbox with an error message provided. A successfully sent message is no guarantee the message will be accepted and received by the recipient's incoming mail server.
EVEN using web based mac.com to access mail (from location(work)), i cannot send mail!
When using webmail access to send a message with your .Mac account at work, is the message sent as with the Mail application and placed in the account's Sent mailbox which indicates the message was successfully sent but is not received or does something different occur?
but Gmail works fine from location (work) both via Mail.app and via gmail web-based
Then try selecting Gmail's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account when using the Mail application to see if this makes any difference or have you already tried this?
i have used another Ibook to try both via Mail.app and web-mased mac mail from location (work) but also will not complete the send.
i have configured a PC outlook express at location (work) for mac mail and it will not complete send
i have used PC browser (IE) to access mac mail web based and it will not send from location (work)
Are the messages also successfully sent with the Mail.app and webmail access on the iBook and with OE and IE on the Windows PC but not received by the recipient?

  • Mail: how is the number # of each mail in a mailbox assigned?

    Hi there,
Today I have finally transfered all my POP3-mailboxes into IMAP mailboxes.
I did this by setting up new IMAP Accounts in mail and then just draging the old mails from the POP3-accounts into the new IMAP account.
Now, strangely out of my 3 transfered mailboxes, in one mailbox the mails have a reverse number order and i want to fix it.
Let me explain: in mail, in my inbox, i see a continuing number under the "#" sign for every mail. that number seems to be assigned according to the order oder which the mails have arrived.
in the general inbox, everything is thrown together. So the numbers will look like this
    5763
    1
    2
    7382
    3401
    3402
    3
    3404
    4
    5
That symbolizes different numbers from different accounts - well, i just would like to know, how i could sort of re-sort this particular mailbox, where the neweset mail has the number "1" - with all other mailboxes, the oldest mail has number "1", so i really wonder how that happened.
Anybody knows what i am talking about? ;-)
    thanks
btw of course i run lion 10.7

  • HT2954 How to search the content in Mac mail system?

I receive a lot of emails each day, some of the are dumped in the inbox. It is natural to search them later by typing some keywords. But the search engine performance is very bad compared to the the one of Gmail. I typed the same words, Mac mail showed there is no results. But Gmail gave almost all of them.

Hi, for my money, Spotlight is the worst serch engine since "Don't Find this.app"
But, are there options showing for From, To, Content & such?

  • Where are the emoticons in Mac Mail?

Where are the emoticons in Mac Mail 5.2 on OS 10.7.3?

I used  colon parentheses with the smiley emoticon  which is the normal code for a smiley. It works on this forum. I used to type these in all the time on Eudora so I'm familiar with the different combinations.
I added a space after it in the system preferences/language popup and sent myself another letter with it included and it still doesn't work in Mac mail (I added a space before and after it in MacMail).  but it does work in TextEdit now.
Yes, "use symbol and text substution" is clicked.
The checkbox is ticked in the replace box; in the next box is the colon/parentheses with a space, and then the smiley in the next box.
    Thanks for trying to help.
