Mail sending phishing email?

ClamXav sentry is reporting I am sending phishing email. Nothing appears in Sent messages but the offending file can be tracked down and moved to trash. If I do this,  another is sent. Scanning the Mac with ClamXav doesn't provide any clues as to what's generating the emails, so I'm at a loss as to how to stop this.

I don't know whether this will solve your problem or not, but you must never move email manuallly, either to the trash or to a quarantine folder. Don't allow any AV software to do so. Moving will surely corrupt the mailbox index which could result in lose of additional emails. More improtantly, the offending email won't be deleted from the email server if you use IMAP or POP3 leaving messages on the server. The next time you check for new email that same message will be downloaded to your computer.
The only way an email should be deleted is by opening it with your email client and using the delete feature there. With ClamXav you can do this by either finding the path in your scan log or by a right-click/control-click on the file name and choosing "Reveal In Finder". When the window opens, double click on the email to open it in your email client. If you agree that it is infected delete it there and empty the trash folder. If you disagree, make note of the file name (usually <number>.eml or .emlx) so you can ignore it the next time you scan.
One additional step is necessary with gmail accounts. You must use webmail in your browser to permanently delete any files.
Hope this helps.

  • Apple Mail sends out emails when turned on. Adress book creates groups of email addresses

I have had this issue with my address book for a while in that it creates new entries with just an email address as the actual entry and then hundreds of other email addresses from address book as this entry's additional email addresses.
At the same time I had an issue with Apple Mail that I thought was unrelated but now I am not that sure anymore. When I turn Apple Mail on, it sends out emails that look like an endless chain of responses (spam) to the same email that advertises  all kinds of stuff.
When I first noticed the issue I turned Mail off (a year ago). After updating to Lion I tried to use mail again but had the same issue and have not been using it since. But I appear to still find new entries in my address book all the time.
I ran some software (ClamX) but wasn't able to find any malware so far. I can't imagine someone hacking into my machine and doing all this my hand. For what?
So I am wondering whether anyone has had similar symptoms on their Mac?

Do you recognize the new entries in Address Book, or the contents of the messages?

  • Mail sends 2 emails  at once when I only have one address for receiver??

Why does mail send to my friends old address even though I deleted it from the address book and it is not in the to fioelr of the email??
    This is crazy!
    Mark

You can keep the original ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match, and use a different ID for iCloud for email, calendar, contacts and bookmarks syncing and PhotoStream.
In iTunesStore>Account you can change the email address associated with the login ID if you with - the actual login doesn't have to be a functioning email address.
This means that iTunes will have a different login to iCloud, but Keychain will take care of this anyway so your won't need to remember which one to use. It's better security to have your iTunes login different from your easily discoverable email address, given the number of complaints about iTunes accounts being hacked.

  • TS3276 Why does my mail send an email from a different account form the one selected?

    Hi,
I have several email accounts configured in my mail app.
For no reason it started sending email from one of my accounts with another email address, so when people reply to my email (from a particular account) it goes to another inbox and I sometimes miss it.
    Any tips?

In Mail>Preferences>Accounts>you can set Each Mail account to "Use Only This Server" located at the lower right of the window below, which you specify once.  Then the Mail app will not have a choice of server available to pull those shenanigans.
    Hope this helps

  • Apple Mail - sending multiple emails from drafts folder

    Hi all,
So If I save few emails in drafts - then later want to send tham at the same time - I can go to drafts and highlight them and choose messages > send
but the problem is each opens up and says:
    cannot send message
This message could not be sent because your account does not have a preferred outgoing mail server. Select an outgoing mail server from the list below.
    - however - in accounts I do have a smtp chosen and use only this server is checked.... (and single emails work fine)
    - Q: so I want to be able to just highlight the several mail and send them all at once - without the extra dialogs......
    How do I fix this?

    Thanks Old Toad,
i think I had done that....
1 - So I just made 2 test emails from =  my main account and saved each in drafts - each says from = [email protected] as they all do and work corretly when sent...
2 - then i go to drafts and highlight the 2 I just made - and choose menu - messages > send
then it says are you sure...
then it has this error for each one
Maybe you can try this also to see if you have the same issue?

  • Mail sends old emails to recipients

For a while now we have had people tell us that they receive old emails from us. There does not seem to be a pattern but every once in a while I look in my sent folder and I see that Mail has just sent an email that I previously sent days or weeks ago.
Does anyone know a fix for this problem?
Using Mail version 2.0.5 and Mac OS X 10.4.3
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Update:
My friend claims he never got such an email, so perhaps it's just a glitch? It's still there in my Sent folder, however, although just on the iPhone and nowhere else.
Still curious to hear from Mac officials on this!

  • Yahoo Mail sending multiple emails

I've had it for the last few days. Today I sent quite a few emails out .....40 was sent with one and 15 with another and so on.I'm fuming but most of all it's so embarrassing! I've been trying to get through to Sky....40 mins and counting...

Hi all,  I am having the same issue and have been for the past couple of days, it seems to be ok if I compose an email from scratch but replying to an email sent to me is where I have the multiple email sending issue. Agree it is also very annoying and wish Sky would get it sorted quickly. As I was looking through this website a pop up appeared and asked me to do a survey about the Sky Community, which I did and told them what I thought about this issue and their inability to deal with it - or even respond to the posts on this forum!!! Not sure how else to complain without an email address or holding on the phone for ages, so did it through this survey!!

  • Phishing emails appear in thunderbird despite being junked on my ISP site.

My ISP successfully sends phishing emails from a source mimicking my ISP to Junk which then do not appear in the inbox. However, they do appear in TB inbox. How do I stop this. Advice gratefully received.
    Regards.

''It seems this email (and others) have their origin in TB. Is this possible?''
No, it isn't. My best guess is the message slipped through your provider's spam filter. You have a POP account and the message gets removed from the server when you download it with Thunderbird.

  • Mail sending failure

    Hello friends,
we have developed one service to send mail through SMTP settings.  My client is using Office 365 email Id.
    For Example:
username: [email protected] , password: XXXXXX
    From email: [email protected]
    ssl=true
    hostname: smtp.office365.com
    In above case,Mail successfully sent.
But as per below settings, we are getting failure in mail sending:
username: [email protected] , password: XXXXXX
    From email: [email protected]
    ssl=true
    hostname: smtp.office365.com
Error: "Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender"
In above case,we have used different from Name and account email id.
Please give me some solution to solve above issue.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Thanks for your question. You might need to make sure if SMTP server accept the specific account to access or SMTP server accept the anonymous access.

  • I cannot send out emails from my iPad,says my email address was rejectected by server. I am receiving mail, but can't send?

When sending emails from iPad,I get message: email was rejected by server.  I am receiving mail to rejected email address

Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select the account > account name , tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email account and password and see if it then works

  • I cannot send an email from my iPad 2? No problem receiving, why does this happen? Have tried the suggestions for setting up email and after doing the sync mail through iTunes receiving worked great but still cannot send? Any help would be great

I cannot send an email from my iPad 2? No problem receiving, why does this happen? Have tried the suggestions for setting up email and after doing the sync mail through iTunes receiving worked great but still cannot send? Any help would be great!

The fact that you can receive means you have a valid e mail address, and have established the connection to the incoming server, so all of that works.  Since the send does not work, that means your outgoing server is rejecting whatever settings you used formthe outgoing set up.  Try them again.
Google your particular isp, and ipad and many times you will find the exact settings needed for your isp.  Or tell us here, and soneone else may be on the same isp.  Some mail services need you to change a port, or have a unique name for the outgoing server.
    Kep trying.

If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact AppleCare(or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.

  • Mail: Forwarding: Original Sender Gets Email as Well?

I haven't been using Mail very long -- I used to use Eudora for decades and it was my definitely favorite email app. I hated Outlook et. al and when I bought my MacBook Pro and it was running 10.5.8, well, I just could not get Eudora to work. So I reluctantly had to switch to Mail, which I hated then, and hate even more now.
A couple of times, I was horrified to see that when I forwarded email from someone to my wife, and perhaps added a comment with the quoted text of the email, the original sender whose email i was forwarding got the email -- with my comment -- as well!
Since I don't know what's going on, I don't know how to explain it, but here's an example. Someone emailed me about taking some lessons (I teach Japanese). I replied and said I couldn't take her right now, which wasn't true -- she was already asking for a group discount for two people and I know the type and I just didn't want to bother with it, so I said I was too busy.
Then, I forwarded the email she had sent me, with the request for the discount, to my wife. I specifically chose the "Forward" button, my wife's address appeared in the address box, and I included some snide comment about why the woman was asking for a discount on a discount, as I'm already way cheaper than most turors.
    Still with me?
Then, later on I changed my mind and replied to the woman and told her I could fit her in, but she'd have to pay the full price. I BCCd my wife in on this email (Bcc means "Blind CC" -- meaning, as I understand it, that the main person recieving the email only sees their address in the header, and possibly "and other recipients," but not anyone else's email address or anything like that.
So, we go back and forth over various things, and occasionally I forward the woman's email to my wife, again, with comments, that I OBVIOUSLY don't want this woman to see.
Okay, no problems there -- before I click "Send" I make sure my wife's address, and ONLY her address, is in the address field, as I'm just forwarding an email.
Yet today, when I went to check what time this person is coming, I see all the emails that we've ever exchanged including the very first one, all one after another -- her emails, my replies etc. But then, in the middle of all these, I suddenly see the email I forwarded to my wife with the snide comment in it! How the **** did it get in there, and is it possible that email was also sent to this woman as well, so she read my comment?
Other odd things have happened when I've forwarded things to my wife -- a reply, perhaps, from someone we both know but with my previous emails, NOT MEANT to be read by my wife, somehow in the chain!
Now I'm ultra paranoid. Has this woman received those emails I sent to my wife (I thought) and read my snide comments? Why on erth would Mail include, in this bck and forth with this woman -- maybe ten emails in all, suddenly a forwarded email to my wife? It should not be in the chain at all, since it was NOT sent to the woman, merely forwarded to my wife.
Is Mail sending emails to people with their email addresses being visible in the address fields without my knowledge? Has this woman read my snide comments (and my wife's replies to them!) and even if not, why are those back-and-forths with my wife doing in the same chain as the emails to this woman? They technically should have no connection to the woman, since they were nit addressed to her, merely forwarded.
And are people seeing who I'm Blind CCing? Mail certainly is an effed-up app -- it's very badly putr together and just serves to remind me that Apple has really put some horrific software into their systems over the years, and seemingly with every new iteratioon and every new OS, the apps just get worse and less intuitive, not the opposite, with NO WAY to downgrade. If I had my way, this MacBook would be running Tiger. with iMovie from 2004 (same for all the iLife apps -- they've degenerated into Microsoft-like unusable messes).
But I'm seriously worried about this Mail issue -- the last thing I want is for people to be receiving emails that I'm not aware are being sent.
And I REALLY wish Eudora functioned on this machine -- I don't know why it doesn't but it keeps giving me error messages. But that's a separate problem.
Anyone else experienced anything like this?

    Thanks, guys . . .
I kind of knew that Mail couldn't possibly be sending emails to people without my being aware of it but I just wanted to double check.
As far as the other email programs go, for some insane reason all the ones I try (Thunderbird, for one) have problems connecting with my SMTP (outgoing) server. In one case, there's no way to change my account setting from IMAP to POP . . . the way these programs are set up, just configuring your settings requires a B.S. in network technology . . . every time these things happen, I end up on the phone with the local ISP for two hours and most of them have no idea what a Mac is  . . .
I think in this case I wll just stick wth the Devil I Know. Every email program has its drawbacks and Mail is clunky and unintuitive but thank God, it integrates with SpamSieve, the only junk mail killer that really, really works (I just learned how WELL it works when I tried Thunderbird and it downloaded all the mail I'm REALLY getting s opposed to the mail that I end up seeing -- for every legit email that SpamSieve lets through, there are at least 75 that it doesn't. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm inundated with at LEAST 400 junk emails A DAY for my two accounts and without SpamSieve I'd be in the First Circle of ****, but I digress).
It's been a year now with Mail and although I despise it at least now I think I'm getting used to it, and your reassurances about people getting unwanted mail definitely removed my last doubts.
I'll stick with Mail, since the others don't look exactly like champs either, and just pray Apple doesn't "Upsdate" anything for a good long while.
    Cheers, mates
    Nick
