Mail sent to me shows wrong name in to: field

I've been seeing this problem for quite a while. Certainly since Yosemite was launched. A small, but significant proportion of email sent to me shows an incorrect name in the To: field. If I hover over it to see the email address, they have been sent to one of my email addresses. The names I am seeing are usually other people I know and correspond with.
An even weirder thing is that sometimes the names I see appear to be the names used by other people as contact names. For example, I know my wife has a contact entry for me with the name "ICE Julian Paas". This is in her contacts, not mine. Sometimes I get emails from other people and my name appears as "ICE Julian Paas".
I have 3  gmail accounts with several aliases on each.
I've tried rebuilding my mailbox and that hasn't helped.
This is messed up.

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • In Mail - emails arrive with the wrong name?

I am receiving emails both in general and from FaceBook with the wrong name as the sender.  Today I received an email from "Jerri" and the name shown was "Marilyn".  I also receive all my FB emails from 'Dina'  and they are from all kinds of different people.
I'm on a MacBook Pro, 10.10.2.  I looked on FB to find an answer, but can't find anything, but it must be with Mail, as the emails arrive from anyone direct (not from FB) and they are wrong.  I did just rebuild Mail, but the same wrong names are there.
    Thanks anyone, Cheryl

It is an excellent question .. it used to happen when I ran my first Mac on snow leopard but I have never pursued the reason until I saw your question.
    Here is a useful reference.
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/55416/my-mac-minis-computer-name-keeps- changing-when-it-resumes-from-sleep
Something is faulty in the main router. That it is a TC is no surprise really.. they are far from being great routers.
Of course if this didn't happen on previous OS but is now happening since you moved to Yosemite.. well you know where the blame lies.. although how Yosemite is affecting it I don't know.
Since I moved everything to Asus router I no longer have the problem. But my Mac was up to (5) and I thought this is getting ridiculous.
Let me copy and paste the answer and kudos to the guy who posted it.. Jon not me.
I've seen this happen when the local DNS server has DNS caching enabled, but doesn't flush the cache often enough (or at all).
You can set your Host Name/Computer Name to a static value using scutil in Terminal. This means that your Mac will no longer change it's name automatically, so it's important that there are no other machines on your network that actually have that hostname. When you run this, replace "new_hostname" with your desired hostname:
    sudo scutil –-set HostName new_hostname
    sudo scutil –-set LocalHostName new_hostname
    sudo scutil –-set ComputerName new_hostname
You can check to make sure the values are set by running:
    sudo scutil –-get HostName new_hostname
    sudo scutil –-get LocalHostName new_hostname
    sudo scutil –-get ComputerName new_hostname
When you do this you might keep getting errors that another computer of the same name is on the network.. just reboot the TC to clear the DNS cache.
Or if that doesn't work you will need to clear the cache from the local computer.

    DenisBlaine,
It appears someone else had the same issue with their Blackberry sent items, and the proposed solution was to set up the account using the IMAP protocol: http://www.blackberryforums.com/mac-users-corner/96185-entourage-garbles-message s-sent-bb.html

  • "xm list" command shows wrong name

    Hi,
I have created a virtual machine called "testobi1" using VM Manager. And when I run "xm list" command then it shows the wrong name "50_testobi1"
    [root@test01 ~]# xm list
Name ID Mem VCPUs State Time(s)
    *50_testobi1* 1 1024 1 -b---- 0.8
    Domain-0 0 543 8 r----- 87.1
Any suggestion on how to correct *50_testobi1* to *"testobi1"*?
I have changed the name line in /OVS/running_pool/50_testobi1/vm.cfg file, restarted whole VM server but no success.
    Thank you for your help.

Actually I thought that I would connect to domain by given name in VM Manager. For example: * #xm console testobi1* But now I will have to remember prefix counter information which is auto set. what could be reason for such design?I suspect it's to ensure that all guests always have a unique name, but that's just a guess.
When I try to create domain manually on command line without VM Manager then it created domain name as given and did not prefix counter to it.Correct -- the prefix is created by Oracle VM Manager itself, as it adds the guest to the database. You'll notice that when you import a manually created guest, it will be given a prefix by Oracle VM Manager during the import process.

  • Mail Sent List - Only Shows  "FROM"... not "TO"

I just switched to IMAP from POP (connected to a Gmail acct).  In my SENT items list in Mail, I can only see the FROM field, which is of course ME.
I would like to see the TO field when I view this list so I can identify sent messages by the recipient.  The obvious fix is to select the Sent Mailbox, go to VIEW>MESSAGE ATTRIBUTES and select TO.  For some reason, TO is already checked, but is greyed out along with several other attributes. So, this does not work.
I can sort by "TO", but the list still shows the FROM name.  Not helpful.
Thanks for any suggestions on this.

I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this, but here goes.
When I download IMAP mail on my iPad I see only my name as the intended recipient. I cannot see the full address the sender was using. It makes it hard for me to know which of my accounts this mail was intended for. ( I use Gmail and others as a blind address an have that mail automatically forwarded to me. )
If I could see the sender's intended recipient address, I could determine which path the mail took to get to me. Then, I could manage that forwarding better.
Is there a way to fully expand the simple "Joe Blow" name in the grey oval that's serving as a visible recipient address in my incoming mail so I could identify the forwarding address I used for that particular notice?
    Many thanks for any ideas.

  • Mail sent why not showing number emails

I noticed in Mail that total number of sent emails not shown is like this or can be changed ?
    THANKS

It sounds like your manager has delegated you right to only his inbox folder.  If you need full access, there is a setting on his mailbox to provide full access to his mailbox which would allow you to see the full folder structure.
This is essentially Exchange 2013 running in office 365 so I will do my best to explain what to do without having access to O365.
Navigate to the Exchange Admin Center, find Recipients and your manager's name. Click Edit (pencil icon) on your manager's name and click the "mailbox delegation" menu on the left side of the window. Scroll down to the very bottom where it says Full Access
    and add your name there.
Within 15 minutes, and probably closing and re-opening Outlook client, your manager's mailbox should appear as a second mailbox in your outlook profile automatically.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Why is apple mail calling me by the wrong name?

This is bugging me ... my name is spelt Liane and has always been so and this is part of my email address.  For some reason since upgrading to SNow Leopard Mail has decided my name is "Leaann" and has added this notation after my actual name and before the email address in <  > .
So I get Liane Surname "Leaann" <[email protected]
I find this supremely annoying and can see nowhere in Preferences where my name is showing incorrectly.
Why has it done this and how do I get rid of it?
    (whimper)

Hahaha liane ! It's good that you can still find a little levity with this situation....
I'm sure you have also tried the reboot option as well?
I cannot even begin to imagine where this is happening or why....what a nightmare for you!!!
Hang in there, and if I come across anything that might be a clue, I'll be sure to repost to this thread....
    Cheers,

  • Hotmail e-mails "sent" from iphone show on ipad but not mac?

Hey, just a quick question ergarding emails "sent"
If I send or reply to and email on my mac it'll show in both my iphone and ipad in the sent folder, but if its sent from either of these it doesn't show up in the mac sent box?
Is there a fix for this?
    Thanks

    IMAP vs POP:
    http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/guides/email/imapvspop.html
on your iPhone and iPad go to settings/general/mail/accounts and look at the accounts. It will say how you set it up. On your iMac go to Mail/prererences/accounts and you will see the account description. If it's working OK for you and you aren't comfortable with setting up mail accounts it can get messy.

  • Mouse rollover on bookmark shows wrong name & location text

FF 22.0, Win 7. Don't know when this started but when i hover the mouse over a bookmark (in my bookmark display) it displays the incorrect name and location text. It is displaying the info for another bookmark. It does display the correct info for the bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

This issue can be caused by a problem with HiDPI support in current Firefox versions.
Try to set the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref on the <b>about:config</b> page to 1.0 (current default value is -1.0) to restore the behavior of previous Firefox versions.
If necessary adjust layout.css.devPixelsPerPx starting with 1.0 in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.0 or 0.9) to make icons show correctly.<br />
Use an extension to adjust the text size in the user interface and the page zoom in the browser window.

  • Yosemite Mail - wrong name in "To" field

Just upgraded to Yosemite on my iMac & Mail had a headache.  I have access to 3 mail accounts - 2 are gmail and the other is from my own web address. To explain my problem, I'll call these accounts G1, G2 & Web. Under Mail>Preferences>Accounts, the accounts are listed in the sequence of G1, G2 then Web.  When I look at the mail overview page from any of these 3 accounts, the "To" field replaces the account name with the Web short name.  However, in the mail itself, the G1, G2 or Web names are shown correctly.  The "To" field was correctly shown before I upgraded but the upgrade has affected all the existing mails as well as all the Junk, Trash, etc mailboxes.  I have no idea where to start. Has anyone any ideas.  Thanks.

I've sorted it.  Having looked at a similar issue that someone had with iCloud, I checked Contacts and, sure enough, it had become corrupted.  The Web name (see above) had my other account names dragged in.  Once I deleted these inclusions, the Mail "To" fields got the correct name.

  • Website blade shows wrong name under Application Monitoring for staging slot

    Hi,
I've set up AI for a production and a staging  website. I can see both of them in the AI blade. I want to see them also in the website blade.
In the production site website blade an Application Monitoring part is displayed. It shows the site name and it shows the AI name under a 'Loading...' bar (which does not go away).
In the staging site website blade there is also an Application Monitoring part, but as the site name it shows {sitiname}/staging which is not correct (I named the site {sitename}(staging}.
How can I linkt the right AI to the right website blade?

    Hi Vincent,
Do you still see the Loading state in Application Monitoring part? BTW this part shouldn't show your application resource by the default, but it also shouldn't show the Loading state. You should be able to see the future selection of additional AI enablement
for your Azure website that brings additional remote dependencies data.
    http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2015/01/15/new-application-insights-functionality-on-azure-websites-with-the-application-insights-website-extension/
We don't have an ability to add AI extension for the slot and as a result you'll not be able to see the resource there.
For now you'd better use AI blade and the item about providing better experience to link the resources to the website/slot overview blade is in our backlog and we're working on this.

  • Autocomplete shows wrong name

i like the autocomplete feature; however, today it suggested my name in a form, but with "null" added, ie Joe null Bloggs. i'm sure i have never typed this in, so where did it come from? i'm suspicious that someone else has somehow typed it (though i'm the only person who has access to my computer)
    == This happened ==
    Just once or twice
    == today

In my case, I have a field admin_phone_extension that is getting filled in with the saved "email" field on a specific page.
I can verify this by logging in to our application with the form history control open, see the "email" field saved, delete that email field only, then navigate to the page in question, the admin_phone_extension is blank.
Log out then log in and navigate to that page without messign with the saved history, adn the admin_phone_extension field is filled in with the email.
the markup for the field is:
    <input name="admin_phone_extension" value="<?=(isset($advertiser['admin_phone_extension'])?$advertiser['admin_phone_extension']:'')?>" style="width:35px;" type="text" />
so why it is getting autofilled with the saved contents of the "email" field is beyond me.
One of my coworkers has a problem on a gaming site where every time she logs in and goes to edit her account on http://taint.rtgc.org, it fills in a field named "phone" with the value from a field named "login"
And this happens EVERY TIME she goes to that site.
We can possibly provide more information in private emails, as both of these issues happen behind a login which we cannot publish publicly.

  • Wrong name in email address and damaged index in address book

I have experienced this problem for months now. I have a Mac Pro at the office and MacBook Pro at home. The address book is synced with .mac. At random I will receive emails and the mail program will attach the wrong name with the address ( John doe [email protected] will be displayed as mary smith [email protected] ) this also happens in mail I have sent and copied myself on. The incorrect name is usually one that exist in my address book. The second part of the problem which may be related is the index for both address books will get damaged. Every few days I have to discard the address book index file ( AddressBook-v22.abcddb ) which fixes the index issue for a few days. The computers nor the applications ever crash. I wonder if the .mac syncing could be key to both computers having index issues. Rebuilding the address index does not fix the wrong name issue. Both computers are 10.5.2. I feel there is some deeper corruption issue that rebuilding that one index file does not correct. I have also rebuilt all the mail boxes.

SOLUTION: my ultimate solution to the address book confusing contact info in ichat, mail, etc. was to go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ and delete the AddressBook-v22.abcddb file. back up your contacts first!!! but after you delete and relaunch, Address Book will rebuild using the info from the Metadata folder. worked like a charm.

  • Mac mail shows the wrong name in the inbox

Mac mail is showing the wrong name for one sender in the inbox. It is correct in the preview pane and when opened.
Is also correct on ipad and iphone. Only wrong in mac mail. This occurred when the person changed their name.
Have already deleted that user from the previous emailed contacts. Have started in Safe mode to clear caches.
System is a macbook air with Mavericks 10.9.4
Thanks in advanced for any help with this.

    What next?
I'd check with the senders whom you receive mail from to be sure they have your name correctly entered in the address book for whatever mail client they're using; I'm guessing the problem is on their end, since we've eliminated the possibilites on your end: Address Book and the Previous Recipients list. Those are the only two places Mail could draw that information from, unless it's in the original message sent to you, which you can confirm by opening a message, then choosing View > Raw Source. Look for the To: field and if the name doesn't match yours, then you know the problem is on the sender's end, in which case you should tell them to correct your name in their email address book.
Can I clear out the email account completely and start again.
You could, but that won't solve the problem. That name is coming from somewhere external to Mail (since Mail doesn't keep any such information), so it's just a matter of finding the source correcting it.

  • In Mail, the "From" line shows the wrong name associated with the email id. How do I update it?

In Mail, the "From" line shows the wrong name associated with my email ID. I've looked over preferences and account information but have not found where I can update it.

There isn't an email address associated with the contact name who appears as the "from" in Mail. It used to be a shared email address and I already had updated the contact to list only the phone number in case that was causing the problem.
