Mail Server deaf to incoming SMTP

I'm running an EIMS 3.3 mail server, on a G5 iMac 1.8 ghz, OSX 10.4.11. The system worked well for years. I went to an Xserve colo, and now moved, and am trying to resurrect the EIMS mail server.
Email accounts hosted by the server exchange happily whether client is local or remote. Outgoing email to anyone goes through fine. My server sees no connections to deliver mail from the outside world (domains), but remote users can check their accounts.
telnet pacmult.com 25 gets me
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to pacmult.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
Nothing in the error logs, mails hit their accounts ok, just no connections or mail coming in.
Wha???????? Any good SMTP geeks on call? Thanks.....
Message was edited by: pacmult No wifi or internal router, just a cable modem to the server, firewall is in the iMac only, and results are the same with firewall off.

Hi Pterry, thanks for piping up.
I checked all the logs (that I can find), and I don't see a reference to these connection failures. If you can name a particular log of interest, I'll copy it here.
My EIMS logs show no errors, either in the main error log, or receive error log, as it's the mail server appears to never see these incoming attempts.
It was a good idea to check, but I show no other mail services running that would interfere.
I called my cable company and asked if they had a smtp block on my leg, and they swore they different. My old ISP in LA said he's showing a smpt block of some sort.
I tried to send an email to a local account from my yahoo account, and got this daemon bounce:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
<[email protected]>:
Connected to 65.175.133.72 but connection died. (#4.4.2)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long.
I checked the mx record, and it appears to be correct.
Day 3, I'm still looking.......

• Mail Server "Type" and Mail Server "Address" for Incoming & Outgoing Mail

First, the only browser I use is Mozilla's Firefox, the best browser hands down. Second, I have both a Yahoo email account and a Google "gmail" account that I use regularly (daily). I am trying to set up a mail washing program to rid myself of these ridiculous spammers & scammers, however I need to the the Incoming & Outgoing mail server "type" & "address" to do this and I seem to have guessed the yahoo settings, but I can't seem to get the Google gmail account set up properly. Yahoo settings that worked are: Server Type="POP3" and Server Address="pop.mail.yahoo.com", with advanced settings: Secure Authentication=Required, Secure Connection (SSL)=Required, Store Cached Emails=Yes, Server Port Number=995 (set), Pipelining=Enabled. The equivalent settings for the Google gmail account result in an error message = "Failed to log into POP3 Server". Of course user name & password triple checked, Type=POP3, Address=pop.mail.gmail.com, and , Address="pop.gmail.com" tried also, Port and other settings the same. Where can I find this info for both accounts? Tanks a million! -jw

Yahoo and Gmail support should be able to help you.
Not related to Firefox support, web mail doesn't use POP or SMTP protocols which is what email clients such as Thunderbird use for communicating with email servers.

• Mail: Proper way to adjust IMAP/SMTP mail server entries?

Please forgive, but I am still on 10.4 (Tiger) with an iCloud mail account. I believe this is still a widely applicable and helpful question!
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server):
MINE IS STILL: mail.me.com (Currently still working fine)
Advised/required: imap.mail.me.com
SMTP (Outgoing mail server):
MINE IS STILL: smtp.me.com (Currently still working fine)
Advised/required: smtp.mail.me.com
QUESTION 1: To have the server entries set properly, can I simply make textual changes in the Incoming/Outgoing server name fields for my IMAP iCloud mail account (via insert of word "mail" in server names; change is not shown here)...
...or should one DELETE IMAP ACCOUNT (as I have commonly read!) and recreate with all new correct settings? If it is advisable to Delete the account, why wouldn't just making the quick server name adjustments be sufficient?
Also, I need some fears assuaged:
- "Deleting an IMAP mail account" in Mail has no risk/danger of losing/deleting all of your Sent and Received Inbox/Sentbox contents, correct? When you recreate an Account, all of your mail held on server is still fully safe and accessible, yes?
ISSUE TWO:
I like to use both my "me.com" and "mac.com" email addresses.
Under "Edit (Outgoing) Server List," I still have a secondary older entry "smtp.mac.com" listed.
QUESTION 2: Is the following statement of my understanding accurate?
"Deletion of the smtp.mac.com outgoing server is completely acceptable and would not prohibit sending of email under mac.com email address because the "mac.com" email address is an alias for the me.com address and ALL mail (whether sent with mac.com or me.com email address) goes out through the ME.COM server."
Is that correct. If not, kindly advise!
I really appreciate the help.
I am not a beginning Mac user and find that the complete configuration intricacies of Apple Mail (I know that's the old name) are one thing that users are never really guided to master and comprehend.
Many thanks in advance!
Bill from Maryland

These are the settings recomended by Apple.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
Server name: imap.mail.me.com
SSL Required: Yes
Port: 993
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
SSL Required: Yes
Port: 587
SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

• Incoming Mail Server Name

I am trying to set-up Mail accessing from an Exchange server. I have tried setting up an Exchange account and also an IMAP account, based on what I have read on these forums, but have been unable to receive mail. I can send to my hearts delight, but not receive. I'm wondering if I have my naming convention is right. If I have the Outgoing Mail server set-up as: smtp.exxon.com... then shouldn't my Incoming Mail Server be mail.exxon.com? I've seen several posts regarding this same problem, but I can't seem to find answer to it. Any help much appreciated.
Using Mac G4, System 10.4.7

Wait a minute... I just re-read your response...
if your sever is called smtp.exxon.com then your
incoming mail server will also be called
smtp.exxon.com.<
My incoming and outgoing are supposed to be named the
same thing?
My account at home is not set-up that way. Please
advise.

Yes, the should be named the same... this is unless you have mail.exxon.com as well. But no harm in trying it with smtp.exxon.com. There shouldn't be any harm in that.
Cheers

• How to change the smtp. element of the outbound mail server

When adding an existing email account it is not possible to change the 'smtp.' portion of the outbound mail server address.
My smtp server name is 'mailout.easymail.ca'
How can I set this?

It is NOT a prefix. It is a label. It indicates the type of server this particular setting will connect to.
Here are the relevant bits of two of my accounts settings.
account27:
INCOMING: account27, , (imap) mail.tamba.co.uk:143, plain, passwordCleartext
OUTGOING: mail.tamba.co.uk:25, plain, passwordCleartext, true

account29:
INCOMING: account29, , (imap) mail.btinternet.com:993, SSL, passwordCleartext
OUTGOING: mail.btinternet.com:465, SSL, passwordCleartext, true
No skulldduggery was required to get those ''mail'' "prefixes" in place. ;-)

• Incoming Mail Server field cannot be empty- but it's grayed out!

I'm trying to set up a new iCloud IMAP mailbox. Everything goes fine, except I keep getting the dialog box "Invalid Incoming Mail Server. The "incoming Mail Server" field cannot be empty". It's emplty because it's grayed out and can't be changed. Huh? What am I missing here?

Why are you trying to manually edit this account. Enter it correctly by opening the iCloud control panel (from System preferences) signing in and switching mail on.
If you are already signed in, sign out reboot and sign back in, turn Mail and any other services you want to use on.

• Problem with Mail "Invalid Incoming Mail Server"

I changed my iCloud password today and then tried to update password settings on my MacBook Air in System Preferences and Mail. I first started in System Preferences/iCloud. I signed out and then signed back in with new password. Everything updated except Mail, which prompted me to update settings in the Mail application. When I launched Mail, my iCloud account was missing, so I created a new iCloud account in Preferences. This is where the trouble began. I was able to successfully create the account, but when I tried to make any changes to the default setting (i.e. changing Junk mail filtering in Mailbox Behaviors), I was prompted to save my changes (as normal), BUT then I received this error message:
Invalid Incoming Mail Server.
The "Incoming Mail Server" field cannot be empty.
[OK]
The only option was to click OK and then lose the changes. I tried deleting the account and starting over. I tried restarting the laptop. I tried signing back out of iCloud in System Preferences. Nothing has worked. I'd like to make changes to the account settings and not get stuck with the default settings. Incidentally, when I looked up this issue in previous discussions, I tried the other recommendations that seemed to work for everyone else, but hasn't worked for me.
FYI, I'm running the most recent version of Mountain Lion.
If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love some help with this.
Thanks!
P.S. Why does Apple make everything so hard when you need to change a password? This has cost me hours of time, not to mention my sanity.
P.P.S. I've had no issues in updating my iPhone and iPad.

Unfortunately that did not work. I unchecked mail and restarted my computer. Went back in & checked mail. I have an appointment at Apple Genius Bar on Monday. Thank you for the suggestion.

• Mail Server Question

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with my mail server. More specifically SMTP. When I checked the logs, this is the error I got for Postfix: fatal: bind: private/smtpd. Does anyone know what that means? What should I do to fix it? Thanks for your help!

Hello, Welcome to discussions.
You will need to contact your school's technical support department and obtain this information. Some schools do provide a local tech support page that shows you how to setup email in email based programs or cell phones. On this page it will also typically provide the incoming and outgoing server that is needed to gain access to your email.
But please check with your tech support team at school as certain restrictions may apply based on the rules they may have set in place.

• More hard bounce for invalid user from mail server

Hi guys,
this is my first post, but i have reade more post in this forum.
my questions is:
i have a domain into my ironport that receive more invalid recipient but the hard bouns are generate from mail server after the incoming mail pass trhough ironport.
I don't have a ldap server
you can help me for find a solution for block the invalid recipients?
this is my idea:
create a new dictionary with into all host of the domain and i apply a policy for control this dictionary.
thi solutio have a problem that i must inser in dictionary every new user create in the mail server.
regards
Michele

This would really be much easier if you had LDAP. If there is any way you could get LDAP to work in your environment, then that would make the IronPort end of things much easier. But if not, then you can do other things.
Using a dictionary as you suggest would work, but it would mean accepting the bad messages and then bouncing them. This is because you can't consult a dictionary during the SMTP conversation. A better solution would be to put the allowable recipients directly into the RAT. That would cause the invalid recipients to be rejected during the SMTP conversation, which will reduce the amount of backscatter you generate.

• Sane virtual mail server setup?

I'm giving up. I want a simple mail server setup (imaps, pop3s, smtps) with virtual user support that I can comfortably configure from the web (PostfixAdmin, web-cyradm, courier-web). I want to manage multiple users on multiple domains. It appears that the task I want to accomplish is insanely complex for some reason. I'd like to use as few different software packages as possible.
I can't find a simple and sane tutorial on the topic and I don't even care what software is going to be used. Of course, I did search and play around with the config for hours but to no avail. The tutorials in the Arch wiki are no good either, they are either outdated or do not allow me to do web configuration.
Help me out here, please.

It's always good to have alternatives, but out of curiousity, did you not try the courier-mta wiki? I used that wiki guide recently and it had me running with a system like what you describe without too much fuss. The only stuff I haven't tried/used is web-based administration or mail access; perhaps this was the problem for you?

it should works, if you use the following parameters:
Smtp server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com:465
User Secure connection: SSL
I'll bet you it will NOT work & even give you 10 to 1 odds that it will fail.
Yahoo won't relay your spam; which is why your messages will be rejected.
What is the difference between your message & a message from a spammer?

• What is the smtp incoming mail server for iCloud?

What is the smtp incoming mail server for iCloud?

There is no such thing as an "SMTP incoming mail server." You set up iCloud mail by checking the box marked Mail in the iCloud preference pane. You don't need to know the addresses of the servers.

did try going on server SMTP in the edit section, both on " accout info" and "advance". no change. thanks

Okay, fixed it on mine. In Mail.app:
1) Mail menu | Preferences.
2) Select problematic account in list on left.
3) Select "Edit SMTP Server List..." from Outgoing Mail Server drop-down.
4) Fix username by appending domain name
(append "@gmail.com" if standard account, or your own domain if apps user).
5) Re-enter password.
Save your preferences.
