Mail Server takes control of my desktop login (and won't let me)

Hi,
I have been running OS X Server for a few years just for a personal email address. The server runs on a static IP next to my desktop (also static IP). Has worked great even back when using a cube (now an older dual G5).
12 months ago upgraded everything to Leopard (including OSX Server) and one aspect of the behaviour changed. Mail still works fine and is the only server activity running (both as per the server pref pane and the server admin utility), however I cannot log in to my desktop normally when the server is connected to the network.
My usual login screen comes up (along with another entry "Other" but it will not accept my password. Unplug the network cable on the server, and the login on my desktop reverts to normal. Screen sharing and file sharing between the two machines works fine once I am logged in. I thought upgrading to Snow Leopard might fix this but it didn't so I am writing now to see what my server might be doing that I am unaware of. Thanks for any help!

Hi
On your Desktop client launch Directory Utility > Edit Menu. Is Root enabled? If it is disable it. 'Other' should hopefully disappear. If it does not quit all applications, launch terminal and issue this command:
sudo rm -R -v /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService
sudo reboot now.
On successful login the 'Other' option should disappear. Did you by any chance make your Desktop client local admin name and password the same as the Server? If you did change one or the other.

    Hi
If you up the logging level to Information or Debug you should see something like this in the Mail.log: "NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from . . . . 450 . . . . Recipient address rejected: Service is unavailable:"
Greylisting is enabled by default as soon as you start the Mail Service. Any legitimate mail server will try and send again to your domain. Spammers will give up and move onto an easier target.

In the iPhoto preferences ==> accounts delete the account and re-enter it - sometimes that resolves this
Or IMHO the best long term solution is to set Apple Mail as the iPhoto e-mail client in the iPhoto preferences and use it - it has a number of advatages and has fewer problems

  • My iMac freezes at login and won't go any further

I started to get frozen grey screen and with rebooting I could get to the login screen where it would think about matters then move on and get stuck in a blue or grey screen.  Now it goes no further than the login screen and won't move forward.
I've tried a safe reboot and power off etc but still not working.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Hi Brian, which OSX version?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

Since the last Skype upgrades the blue screen just keeps circling and doesn't invite me to enter my ID and Password.  I am not competent to change my Skype details.  Can I call somebody to help?
    Reset all Skype settings.
Quit Skype or use Windows Task Manager to kill any Skype.exe process. Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata% and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old.
Next go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %temp%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. Delete the DbTemp folder.
    Restart Skype.
N.B. If needed, you will still be able to re-establish your call and chat history. All data is still saved in the Skype_old folder.

Yes it is.  Thank you very much.  You appear to have adaquate hard drive space available.  Now try the following....
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

  • Mail: unable to connect to my SMPT server? Also new Mail Account defaults to iMap and won't let me change to Pop?

    Dear All,
I've been with the same UK internet and email provider for years and they've given me solid and reliable service. I've worked my way through the Apple Knowledgebase checklist and tests and proved that my isp/esp is working normally so the problem has to be with Mail.
I fiddled about trying to create a Mail Account on my late 2011 but-new-to-me MacBook Pro a couple of days ago and, it might be completely unrelated and simply a coincidence, but since then none of my devices, Iphone 4S, Powerbook G4, iPhone 3G, the MBPro can send email using Mail.
Whenever I try I get prompted for my password but when I enter it says it's wrong but it definitely isn't because I even changed it this morning through my isp/esp and it worked and I then changed it back again to my correct password and it works also to get into webmail that is, not via Mail.
When I run Mail\Window\Connection Doctor and check the status it shows Mail is unable to connect to server but that it can connect to the internet. I get the following message: Trying to log in to SMPT account failed.  Try to verify that username and password are correct.
Now, whenever I try to create a new email account on MacBook Pro Mail keeps defaulting to iMap and wont let me change it to Pop which is what I need.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Dear All,
I'll finish off this thread in case it's of use to anyone else in the future.
I couldn't get the email pop account to recognise my sign-in even though I've been using it continually and without problem for the last several years. It's always been BT and Yahoo so it's more likely to be the fiddle about I did on my temporary, pre migration user account that caused the hiccup.
In th end I had to create another pop account which I was able to once I'd migrated my settings from my PB G4 to the MB Pro.  Unfortunately this didn't merge the numerous email folders that I'd created previously in Mail but I still have them on the PB and I believe they can be transferred manually which is what I will do.
Thanks for everyone that took the time to help.
    K
