Mail service increasing CPU load & server temperature

Hi,
One of our Xserve's is reporting intermittently the CPU 1 Internal Temperature is 86.67C
This seems to be triggered by sending email via SMTP...
when the smtp protocol is being using these two processes crop up, i know they are the antivirus etc but should they be using this much CPU?!
Process name: Clamscan User: clamav
Process name: perl User: clamav
they are using about 90% CPU...
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advanced for your reply.
Elliot

This is the output of ps -U clamav:
*PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND*
48 ?? SNs 0:03.06 clamd
49 ?? SNs 0:00.01 freshclam -d -p /var/clamav/freshclam.pid -c 3

345 ?? S 0:01.95 amavisd (ch2-avail)
347 ?? S 0:00.80 amavisd (ch2-avail)
Aaahhhh yes woops - sorry pterobyte! i did indeed forget to modify amavisd.conf.... Woops
Thanks for your help,
Elliot

  • Setting up mail services. Name of server needs to be changed?

    I setup my xserve with snow leopard. By default it was named server.ourcompanyname.private.
    Here is my problem Im trying to host our company web site along with mail services. Need to bring all this in-house.
    I have with my web provider 5 dedicated IP address, and router address. I bridged the modem to an airport extreme to hand out all the ip address and DHCP, this was done with apple support.
    I need advise on how to go about setting up all the services. Can the name of the server be changed without causing major problems?
    Any advise would be appreciated.

    One other note. Can I change the .private. to .com and will this help me setup mail and hosting services?

  • CPU load and temperatures???

    Hi,
    I have looked at some other posts, and don't see the same query, so here it is:
    My 2009 13" Unibody MBP will overheat if I so much as look at it, or so it seems!. The issue here is that the fan will come on really loudly and the bottom of the machine will become unbearably hot under the following conditions:
    1. CPU load = 20%, temp = 76 C, browsing the web
    2. CPU load = 33%, temp = 77 C, watching an online video
    3. CPU load = 35%, temp = 82 C, watching a movie on lovefilm
    3. The lid of the laptop is closed, and I am carrying it in a bag
    4. I am charging it with the lid closed.
    5. Using an external monitor I have to keep the lid open and on battery use, otherwise it overheats and the fan come on loudly.
    Obviously if I shut it down there is no fan noise, however it still gets hot when charging.
    Does anyone else have these issues? I don't think I am loading the CPU very much, no gaming, no massive number crunching, just heat!!
    Looking forward to hearing your opinions.
    J.

    I would never carry a MBP in a bag unless it is completely turned off.
    What I find out of line is: "1. CPU load = 20%, temp = 76 C, browsing the web"
    If you have other applications open, then there may be an explanation for the high temperature.  Open Activity Monitor and see what else may be open.  Web browsing on my MBP is about 20 C less than what you are reporting.
    The other temperature are not necessarily out of line.
    Ciao.

  • Osx 10.9 Mail & Safari High cpu load

    Hello,
    A few weeks ago I updated to OSX 10.9. After working a few days with it, I run into several high CPU load issues.
    2 processes: mail-webmateriaal and safari-webmateriaal (dutch).
    Now I use Chrome instead of Safari which solves 50% of my problem, but it is not so easy to change to another mail-client...
    Does anyone have a clue about the possible cause, but even more important, a solution?
    Best regards,
    Johan

    jvdstoel,
    Ditto.  I have the exact same OS 10.9 issue on a Late 2008 iMac with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo that is maxed out at 4 GB RAM (seemed like a lot of RAM at the time).
    Mail, Safari, and Firefox--but not Chrome--whether running any 1, 2, or all 3 programs together keeps the CPU running hard at and often above 100%.  This occurs even when the programs a sitting idle from the user's perspective.  Disabling all extensions on Safari and Firefox did not help.  Nor did running Onyx to clear all catches system wide.
    Calling on anyone with a virtual PhD in Maverics (or real Apple OS 10.9 street-smarts) for suggestions.
    Best,
    Pete

  • Security Update 2008-002 and Mail Services on OS X Server 10.4.11

    A word of caution before applying Security Update 2008-002 to OS X Server 10.4.11:
    According to this document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307562
    the security update updates ClamAV to 0.92.1. Which is fine.
    What the document, doesn't tell is that spamassassin, amavisd and what is worse, configuration files, get overwritten in the process as well (without software actually being updated).
    This has some side effects which unfortunately vary from system to system and configuration to configuration.
    If you never updated ClamAV, spamassassin or amavisd manually check that:
    -/etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf, /etc/mail/spamassassin/init.pre and /etc/amavisd.conf didn't get overwritten thus loosing your personalised settings (if any)
    -/etc/spam/clamav/clamd.conf and /etc/spam/clamav/freshclam.conf didn't get overwritten thus loosing your personalised settings (if any)
    If you have manually updated spamassassin or amavisd check that:
    -/etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf, /etc/mail/spamassassin/init.pre and /etc/amavisd.conf didn't get overwritten thus loosing your personalised settings AND causing issues with your current versions.
    -/usr/bin/amavisd didn't get overwritten. If it did re-install amavisd as you did the first time
    -/usr/bin/spamassassin didn't get overwritten. If it did re-install spamassassin as you did the first time
    HTH,
    Alex

    Thanks pterobyte for Your support,
    I have update 2008-002 last week, I never updated ClamAV, spamassassin or amavisd manually,
    and check / reload personalized settings after installation.
    The system has worked very fine in the last days, but today I have had postfix queue with more messages not delivered and following error:
    host 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] said: 451 4.5.0 Error in processing, id=01334-01, virus_scan FAILED: virus_scan: ALL VIRUS SCANNERS FAILED: ClamAV-clamd av-scanner FAILED: Too many retries to talk to /var/clamav/clamd.sock (Can't connect to UNIX socket /var/clamav/clamd.sock: No such file or directory) at (eval 42) line 266.; ClamAV-clamscan av-scanner FAILED: /usr/local/bin/clamscan unexpected exit 50, output="ERROR: Can't initialize the virus database" at (eval 42) line 435. (in reply to end of DATA command)
    I have tried with unload/load amavisd and reload postfix,
    not launch mailbfr to fix db , I was losing too much time and for productivity reasons I have temporary reload prev backup of 2008-002.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    Launch the Activity Monitor utility. Pull down the list near the top and set it to "All Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading to put the highest CPU consumers at the top. Also click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the window to check the value for "% Idle". If that value is much above zero, check the other categories for signs of resource problems. If nothing there points to a possible problem, launch the Console utility and look for messages that might suggest a problem. If you see messages that you have trouble interpreting, post them here and someone should be able to help.

    Hi,
    After this morning upgrade, power consumption of my system has increased from 8-10W to 15-18W at idle and  15-18W to 25-35W while using flash. Their were lot of upgrade today including linux-ck. I get some innocuous boot errors and now am getting another new one.

    OK!  Your comparison is _NOT_ a fair one.  You are comparing 3.3.7-1-ARCH to 3.4.1-2-ck.  You must compare 3.4.1-1-ARCH to 3.4.1-2-ck or you must compare 3.3.7-1-ARCH to 3.3.7-1-ck.
    Here is a link (just for you) to the 3.3.7-1-ck kernel and headers:

    Fasten your seatbelt as I suspect your problem is not with the the linux-ck kernel but with something in the 3.4 series...
    Summary:
    1) Compare 3.4.1-1-ARCH to 3.4.1-2-ck
    or
    2) Compare 3.3.7-1-ARCH to 3.3.7-1-ck
    Please remove the 'linux-ck' from the title of your post if indeed it is not to blame.
    EDIT: why are you not using the corex version of the headers and of the kernel?  They are a matched pair.

  • Mail Services and Backup MX/mail services

    I have a question regarding backup mail services and acceptance of incoming messages.
    As of last week, I am new to the world of Mail Services in OS X Server 10.4. Last week, our current email server died and I was forced to take an Xserve G4 that had OS X Server 10.4.10 (unlimited) and setup mail services in order to receive and send mail. I went to a website called osx.topicdesk.com and followed their instructions for front-line spam defense and clamAV updating (and switching to clamd) which all appears to be working OK.
    Because our old email server was having some hardware issues for the past several months that I had been working on, I had the feeling that failure might happen. So what I did a few months ago was sign up for Google Apps and their mail service. I added their MX records under my primary mail server so that in the case of a failure of my server, all mail would be passed to Gmail and everyone could get to their mail immediately (as any prolonged downtime won't work since this is a daily newspaper). This did work, for when my old server died, all the mail went immediately to the appropriate Google Apps mail accounts. After about a day of setup on the Xserve, I got the mail services running OK. I gave it all the same IP info as the previous server so that the mail would just start working without having to edit DNS records and such.
    The problem I am having seems to be this: While I get most mail, some of my mail is still getting sent to the Google Apps accounts. For example, I have one user, Jane Doe, at [email protected] who gets most of their mail from connecting to the OS X Server, but about 2 - 3 emails a day get passed over to the Google Apps server. I have run DNSStuff.com tests on the mail connections, and I always get a good fast response out of the OS X server. My thinking was that mail would only be passed over to backup mail servers if the first server listed in the MX records was unavailable or offline. In all of my testing, my server has responded every time. The server is connecting via a gigabit network connection (good response), is a dual G4 1.33Ghz, 60GB hard drive with 2GB of RAM. This server doesn't do anything else except run Mail services (and web services for squirrelmail), it doesn't even have file sharing turned on.
    My old email server was a Pentium II 400mhz with 348MB of RAM, and it caught all mail, so I know that the Xserve should be able to handle the load without being busy. Is there any reason that my Xserve would be rejecting mail and they would be siphoned off to the Google accounts?
    Is this even a possible scenario to fix the problem: Setup a backup MX "queue" account somewhere with one of the BackupMX online services that will catch these stray emails and then send it back to the primary server? But then can be turned off quickly to allow mail to go to the Google Apps accounts if my server went down. In other words, the DNS record would show my primary as 1, the backup mx service as 2, the google servers as 3, 4, 5 and so on. Can Backup MX services be turned off quickly like that so that if my server is down and I need email to be accessed immediately then just "turn off" the service (without modifying the DNS since that will take too long to propogate) so that mail bounces over to Google immediately?
    I guess my first troubleshooting attempt should be to figure out why my OS X Server is not accepting all mail.
    Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.
    G

    When I first started with the company about 2 years ago, they had a really old Linux box (about 10 years old) that was used to host email. It was horrible. It would run OK, but if it ever went down or had a hiccup, it was an all-day project trying to deal with it. Unfortunately, the company did not want to spend any money on a new server or software of course. The answer I got was "well, it's just email". Sure, but if email EVER goes down for more than 15 seconds, all of the employees go into seizures and scream that the place will have to shut down. I work for a daily newspaper, so everything is running 24/7.
    Knowing that one day that box was going to just die, I looked into some backup MX services. As pterobyte had mentioned is that with a secondary MX, the problem is that no one can get their mail at all until the primary server comes back up. I knew if that server ever went down, I had nothing to take its place, so I would have to order something or get a server from another location to use. Being unfamiliar with OS X Mail Services, I knew it would take me awhile to try to setup all the users and such. All the while at the newspaper, they would be screaming bloody murder that they needed email working for news, ads coming in, etc. And when I say if it goes down for 10 minutes they start getting into fetal positions in the floor screaming, I'm not far off exaggerating. I figured I was going to need something in place for them to check email while I worked on the primary.
    Back in September/October 2007, I discovered that Google hosted free mail services call Google Apps. With Google, I could setup "matching" accounts and would still be able to use my domain name. You just had to use Google's servers as the higher numbered MX records. Luckily, I set up in time for back in November, the Linux box finally died. When it did, all email successfully went to their counterparts on the Google's servers. I had everyone go to the special Google Apps login site and they were able to check their email fine. I ended up having to take a box from another site and then I had another copy of OS X Server 10.4, so I loaded it and successfully setup email (with lots of help from pterobyte's tutorials). They were on Google's systems for about 2 days.
    After the disaster, I went around and setup IMAP accounts on everyone's Thunderbird clients so that if our email server went down, they just simply check that mailbox. The nice thing with the Google IMAP is that they automatically see if emails are hitting that inbox from within their client. Right now, it still remains that the 2 original companies that hit the Google accounts still do. The city government email and email from a sister newspaper. Everything else gets directed to the primary server. Although sometimes that doesn't even work, as tonight I am having to work on a problem involving the Clamd app acting up - taking up nearly 100% of the CPU which in turn caused all the mail to be hung up in the queue. So since the mail server didn't "reject" the mail and grabbed it, their gmail "backup" didn't get anything in it. It was taking me forever to figure out what was going on, so I almost just told them to unplug the network cable from the email server so that everything definitely would be forwarded to gmail.
    My wish is that I had a secondary mail server in house to not even worry about it - or better yet, I wished I could just outsource the email administration itself to someone else (like webmail.us which is now MailSafe). That way for the most part, they wouldn't lose email. But of course, the company doesn't want to spend the money or invest. Just gripe when the older equipment we have won't support what they want to do with it.
    But the story above explains why I did what I did with the Google's servers. I do appreciate everyone's help and input on this particular problem. I am going to look around at the DNS and talk to at least our sister newspaper to see if I can see how they have their DNS setup.
    Thanks!
    G

  • CPU load higher after applying in 147440 kernel on Oracle database servers

    Hi all,
    Just wanted to know if anyone else is seeing an Increased CPU load with higher peaks and for longer periods of time, especially on single thread processes on oracle database servers. Our Oracle Database versions vary from Oracle 10 to Oracle 11.1.0.7 11.2.0.2 10.2.0.4. The Hardware includes Sunfire V245's, V440 and T5240. We saw a slight performance hit when going to 147440-02 at the first of Oct, but no big deal. Then we applied 147440-04 in the first part of Nov. And of course we got CPU panics and Zfs file system stopped mounting basically a complete disaster. Oracle provided and IDR for the CPU panic and then later release 147440-06. Which resolved the CPU panics and zfs file system mounts. But now our load average on is 1 to 3 points higher during load, grid control is constantly complaining of 100% utilization. I have had a call open since the first of November with oracle/sun support and have provided guds performance stats on before and after Kernel change. They are still saying that its not an issue. It is so bad we had to roll back to a July kernel on one of the servers.

    Just to let you all know what we have found. After 2 1/2 months of working with Oracle Kernel team, they have identified the Oracle Enterprise Manager (emagent) (Grid control Agent) was using nearly 60000 threads under the 147440 Kernel and only 1500 threads under an older kernel.
    I googled the solution for the emagent, but I continue to press Oracle Kernel Engineers to work with their software division, to identify other products that might cause similar problems.

  • CPU load increases at times

    We are running Weblogic 6.0 with SP2 on Win/NT Server. The Server has 2 CPU with 2 GB RAM.
    But at times thru perfmon we see the Both the CPU load increased to 100% and the users

    Any Suggestion, Pl let us know.
    Thanks in advance.

    You can kill -3 even if nohup'd as long as stderr is redirected to a file
    that you can tail (for example).

    Send the java process a SIGQUIT to get a thread dump. This implies thatyou
    not be running with nohup: run as foreground process without the -hotspot
    compiler option.
    Example: kill -3 pid
    (pid is the id of the java process you are signalling)

  • Mail server log says: master[50]: ERROR: Cannot start mail services...

    Recently, after a year or more of relatively smooth service, my OS X Server 10.4.11 Mail services has been locking up daily.
    I was finally able to get some information from the log files (I am a noob to this) and saw the following right after my most recent reboot of the server:
    Oct 5 09:51:11 mm1 master[50]: ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist: /Volumes/Data/mail/var/imap
    I checked the server and that directory is indeed there on the partition named "DATA", so I am baffled as why the server does not thing the configuration directory exists?
    drwxr-xr-x 15 cyrusima mail 510 Oct 5 09:51 imap
    drwxr-xr-x 15 root admin 510 Oct 3 20:01 imap.BAK

    Can anyone help me? My customers are yelling for blood because they cannot send/receive emails.

    Thanks Alex for the feedback. You are helpful as always!
    It's good to know that the message I am getting from the mail server about the configuration files is only a temporary thing. Although I find it strange that the mail service doesn't know where its config files are since it is specified in the mail server setup.
    I looked at the log files you mentioned and do not see anything that looks like a specific problem with the mail services themselves.
    Recently, however, I have been having recurring problems where my mail server and my Web/Database server have both become unresponsive at nearly the same time even though they are on different class A networks to where I cannot access them via ARD, Server Admin and even SSH. That is usually when my mail server goes offline. I was afraid it was because of that configuration error I was seeing, but think now that the problem could be something else entirely (maybe some kind of network problem or denial of service hacking attack, no idea).
    Thanks again.

    Remember that the move/copy is taking place over the internet so it will take a while. I would copy instead of moving just in case of a failure.

  • Tomcat server as mailing services

    hii all,
    I'm building an application on office automation system. there 'll be mailing service, file transfer service etc.. I've decided to use tomcat server for this purpose. could you else please tell me whether i'm in the right way or not!
    thanks...

    It depends of how advanced you want your mail server to be? If you simple wish to send emails that relay to an existing mail Server then this is very easy
    The following will allow you to send emails out using Java.
    package com.fluency.email;
    import java.util.Properties;
    import javax.mail.*;
    import javax.mail.internet.*;
    public class MailManager {
         private String Type = "text/html";
          * Send an email to the given rcpt
          * @param aFromEmailAddr
          * @param aToEmailAddr
          * @param aSubject
          * @param aBody
         public void sendEmail(String aFromEmailAddr, String aToEmailAddr, String aSubject, String aBody) {
             try {
                   Properties fMailServerConfig = new Properties();
                   fMailServerConfig.setProperty("mail.host", "192.168.2.10");
                   fMailServerConfig.setProperty("mail.from", aFromEmailAddr);
                   fMailServerConfig.setProperty("mail.smtp.user", aToEmailAddr);
                   Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance( fMailServerConfig, null );
                  MimeMessage message = new MimeMessage(session);
                 message.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, new InternetAddress(aToEmailAddr));
                 message.setSubject( aSubject );
                 //message.setText( aBody );
                 message.setContent(aBody, this.Type);
                 Transport.send( message );
               } catch (Exception e ) {
                    e.printStackTrace();
                    try {
                        throw(e);
                   } catch (Exception e1) {
                        // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                        e1.printStackTrace();
         public void setContentType( String ct ) {
              if( ct.equals("text/plan") || ct.equals("text/html")) {
                   this.Type=ct;
              } else {
                   ct="text/plan";
    }If you want to create an email server then I recommend you try to reverse enginer QMail. This is open Source so you can download the code and workout how this all works. As QMail splits it's self into pieces this makes it easier. You will also need a very good understanding of SMTP/IMAP/POP3 and TCP/IP to create these servers.
    I would personally create a relay system (Like Spamassasin Spamd) that forwards your constructed emails onto an existing server.
    There is no way to configure Tomcat to be an Email Server out of the box. It's a basic JSP/Java compiler with HTTP support (I am being very simplistic here so don't shout at me). not a mail system. However you can code Servlets to give it this support. Having multiple Tomcat servers running on the mail ports?
    PS None of this is a good idea!
