Mail sits in outbox and doesn't send

mail sits in outbox and doesn't send

remember there is both a mail Sender and a mail Receiver. Receiver setup information is easy to find, but Sender setup information is a little harder to find.
Use exactly the settings your ISP provided, or use this Apple Mail Setup Assistant. (rest assured, Apple does not use this to collect your email address.)
https://www.apple.com/support/mail-settings-lookup/
The easy-to-see info in Mail preferences is for your Mail Receiver. This corresponds to the top part of the box from the Apple site.
You need to use Connection Doctor and click on the red light to get easy access to the Mail Sender info. This corresponds to the bottom part of the box from the Apple site.

First check to make sure you have data turned on and not just Wi-Fi. From reading your question you seem to be saying e mail is working just not attached photos. What size are the photos as some HD photos can't be sent. Your camera may be set at a very high picture size and you can go to settings and lower the size and that may solve your mailing problem.

There are two entirely different paths involved here; SMTP for send and either POP or IMAP receive.  Check your receive path.  Confirm username, password and the POP or IMAP server identity.  Also check directly with your mail provider, and ensure the POP or IMAP server is functioning and online, and the provider hasn't changed their particular POP or IMAP configuration requirements.

  • Unable to send mail- mail remains in outbox and I receive error message

Ok, I have used Mail for years. All of a sudden I am unable to send mail. The mail goes to the outbox and then I receive the following error message.
This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
The server "smtp.mac.com" refused to allow a connection on port 25.
I can connect to webmail of course and send mail that way.
    I receive mail perfectly.
    Not sure what to do...??
Thank you for any help with this.

Read the following article, which applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states) and can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac):

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite, my outbox clogs up and doesn't send all emails.

My iMac and Macbook air have both been upgraded to Yosemite. My Macbook air works fine, but my iMac retains emails in the outbox, and they fail to send. Some actually pass through the net, and send successfully.
If I try to send the same emails from my Macbook air, there is no problem.
This has only occurred since loading Yosemite.

    Howdy bill2069,
It sounds like your iMac emails only intermitently go out, but on your Macbook Air they send without issue. I would recommend using the Connection Doctor, as outlined in the following article to help diagnose and resolve the issue:

  • Shared mailbox outlook 2013 sent mail sitting in outbox folder

    Hi guys,
I am hope you might be able to assist.
I have users who access a shared mailbox (primary mailbox) as delegates with full permissions and send as permissions. They also have a nested mailbox which is their own personal mailbox. Mail sends from both mailboxes and when it behaves mail gets delivered
to the sent item of the sender. But on a common recurrence mail sits in the Outbox of the delegate mailbox when sent from that mailbox. They can hit send/receive and it will force mail to send and also mail can delay for several minutes at times. This is also
    seen in OWA.
Removing the nested mailbox and adding it as a additional mailbox allows mail to flow without issue but mail sent from the additional mailbox gets placed in the sent items of the primary mailbox. Client would prefer the sent items to be kept separate (tried
    DelegateSentItemsStyle).
The exchange is a Exchange 2013 VM server and the client's use remote desktop services to access the platform. Also each Windows mail client is configured to use HTTP and cache mode is disabled for remote services. Last applied update was on the 08/2014.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
    PJ

    Hi,
From your description, when you send a message from shared mailbox, the message is sitting in Outbox folder. I have seen some people have this issue, it is recommended to run Outlook using Cached mode as a workaround.
Hope this can be helpful to you.

  • Mail sitting in Outbox with gear spinning on Sent

All of a sudden when ever I send an email and it could be 1KB it sits in the Outbox. I can shut down and restart Mail 10 times, and eventually it might be sent. Also the "gear" is always spinning on the Sent folder. If I click Check for mail, sometimes it works (send email) most of the time, I have to shutdown mail, and restart it a bunch of times for it to send the mail.
    Any ideas?
    -Paul S.

I have found a fix for this!
    First off, what didn't work:
    1. Trashing the com.apple.mail.plist in ~/Library/Preferences/ did not work.
    2. Trashing the ~/Library/Mail/ folder did not work.
    3. Creating a new test user account and setting up the same account in Mail did not solve the problem.
    4. Neither repairing disk structure nor repairing permissions in Disk Utility fixed the issue.
    5. Deleting the email account in Mail->Preferences->Accounts and re-adding it did not fix the issue.
In fact, no combination of the above steps fixed the "spinning activity wheel next to the Sent mailbox problem".
I confirmed the email server settings both with the ISP, and by successfully setting the account up in Mail on several of the office machines running various iterations of 10.6. I also confirmed that the ISPs servers were viable and even logged into the service's Webmail portal to confirm the account worked properly in all aspects.
Before doing an Archive & Install with the installation disc I called Apple for advice. They confirmed that I had done all the usual troubleshooting steps noted above first and then gave me the following instructions:
    1. Delete the application Mail from the Applications folder, drag its icon off the dock, then empty the trash.
    2. Insert the OSX installation disc and, in the window that opens in Finder after the disc has mounted, double click the "Optional Installs" folder to open it.
    3. Double click on "Optional Installs.mpkg" and after clicking through a bunch of default and informational screens - and entering your admin password once - you'll finally get to a list of the optional installs included with Snow Leopard.
    4. Click the little triangle next to "Applications", then tick the box next to "Mail". Click "Continue" and finish the installation.
When done with step four, I attempted to open Mail but was treated to a little dialogue box that told me, in so many words, that this old version of Mail wasn't compatible with the newer version of Snow Leopard that was installed on my machine. I asked the Applecare person about this and she told me she'd seen this problem before. One last step was needed.
    5. I went to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and downloaded the latest OS combo update from the top of the "Featured Downloads" column on the left side of the page. (If you try to use Software Update instead, be aware that the automatic updates will not check the Mail version number separately from the version of OS X you're running, so manually downloading the combo updater is probably the only option).
Running the combo update on my system (even though I was already at 10.6.6) did the trick. Mail was updated and now opens with no issues. Not only that, but the spinning activity wheel problem is completely gone - I can now send and receive emails without grief.
    Good luck!

  • Mail sits in Outbox

Mail comes in fine, but it won't send. It just sets there and accumulates. I called the new at&t support. Everything looks correct so they went to a specialist in India. He was also puzzled and went on hold until we were disconnected 30 min later. I have to wonder if it is something with the application itself, maybe bad preferences, or wrong permissions in the mail somewhere. Disk utility did not find any permission problems. dot Mac won't send either since it has to go through at&t as the ISP, but it too also receives. BTW - we tried both the old SBC settings and the new at&t SSL settings, same results.

I think we have found the problem. The tableofcontents and mbox file are leftover files from an earlier version of Mail (pre Tiger and Mail 2.x). They are not needed, and may be problematic.
Quit Mail. Again open the Outbox.mbox folder, and this time delete, or otherwise remove the file mbox and file tableofcontents.
Relaunch Mail. Immediately open the Outbox, and then click on Mailbox in the menubar, and choose Rebuild. Wait for Mail to finish this task, and do not be worried if messages which have been appearing, briefly disappear. Immediately quit Mail again, and then relaunch it again. Report whether the messages are not sent.
Later we need to check other mailboxes for leftover files, and there are important guidelines to point you to.

Can't send emails from my iPad, it gets stuck in the outbox and tells me the server fails
    Any ideas..?

amish has it right.  there is something wrong with your outgoing mail settings.  google you isp and 'e mail settings' and reenter them, real carefully.  Pay particular attention to outgoing server name, and server ports.  if it asks for your id and password and calls it optional, enter it anyway.
A few isps have actual apps that will configure it for you.
