Mail slow to open messages

I'm running a Core Duo MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM, OS X 10.5.5.
Recently (and I'm not sure if this followed an update or not), I've been having serious lack-of-speed issues with Mail. When I open a message, the window pops up immediately, followed quickly (sometimes a slight delay but usually not a perceptible one) by the headers. It then takes about 40-45 seconds (counting to 40-one-thousand, haven't used a stopwatch) for the message body to come up.
This happens with emails from both POP and IMAP accounts, in both my inbox as well as "normal" folders on my Mac. I do have a decent number of accounts (some POP, some IMAP) and a whole lot of mail saved on my Mac, but that's been true since before I started having this problem.
I've tried rebuilding a mailbox, and it didn't ameliorate the problem.
Any other thoughts appreciated.

I am a heavy email user - 100 to 200 emails a day sometimes. My Apple Mail was so slow that I got in the habit of clicking on an email and then going to another application to keep working and check back from time to time to see the email opened. I'd then read it, click on another and repeat the process. a serious drag on productivity. I came across this tip on another site and it worked very well for me. Not sure how long it will last.
Here is the link:

Here is the meat of the post:
+You can check your current 'envelope archive' size by entering this in the terminal:+
+ls -lah ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index+
+Then to optimise it (cleans out stuff that has been marked for deletion but not actually deleted, defragments the structure, etc):+
+sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum;+
+Then check your envelope archive size again to see the results…+
+ls -lah ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index+
+It compacted my envelope archive down from 55MB to 50MB — not a huge increase, but the speed difference was dramatic.+

  • IPhone Slow to Open Messages

We have roughly 80 iPhones deployed all tied to Exchange 2003. These are mostly iPhone 4 and about 10 iPhone 4S units. We have one iPhone 4S which is problematic. It is running IOS 5.0.1 (as most of them are) and opens e-mail very slowly. By open I don't mean pulls down from server. It's in the list of items, you click it, and it's very slow to open. We decided to erase the iPhone and then restore. Same issue. We then placed the phone in recovery mode, and restored. Same thing. I then took an iPhone 4, erased and loaded a fresh copy of IOS 5.0.1. Activated e-mail only (no restore pulling in data to eliminate any apps or other items that might be causing the issue) and the same thing occurs. We tested both over Wifi and 3G and same result. This caused me to believe there must be something wrong with the individuals Exchange mailbox. My next move was to have them move everything out of their mailbox to an archive eliminating a high e-mail count in the mailbox. Still the same issue. Oddly, the same person has an first gen iPad, configured the same way and it open the emails very quickly which would then basically rule out the Exchange e-mail account. Anyone have some ideas?

I have been fighting the same thing for many moons. My Exchange provider has no clue. I upgraded my 3 GS to IOs 5 and this is what happened. I subsequently got a 4S (iOS 5.x), same trouble.
The provider had me change the server I connect to. After it all resyncs, I'll see if it's better. If not, I am going to disable Activesync on the server, and then re-provision it and start over. Don't know what to do after that. Gmail works fine.
My provider said it was a known issue with iOS 5 and it is the fault of Microsoft's activesync serever software. To my knowledge they have been unable to get a patch from Microsoft. My iPad works fine 99% of the time. And what is stranger, other users in my organization have no issues. Weird.

  • N96 So Slow to open messages and send

    Please Help
Had p[hone since November and sometimes applications are slow to start but generally excellent phone till today ARRRGGHHH!
The phone just hung in "No Mans Land" several times so took out battery, sim card and emptied all texts (appx 500). Will open messaging now but topen a message takes about two minutes!
    Any ideas please?

    Hi Barry,
I can suggest is a firmware update, if you are not already on the latest which is 12.043. If you are already on the latest version you could try a reset. Before you reset you will need to backup your phone because the reset could wipe out all your data. Try the following resets, the first and then the second if the first does not work.
Always remember to backup your phone before performing resets as your data may be lost.
    First try these
*#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default
    *#7370# - Reformat your phone
Personally I'd leave it for a few days to see if the problem resolves itself before I attempt the resets, which can be a bit of a pain.

  • Mail shows last opened messages as unread on next download

I am using Mail v6.5 under ML and a very irritating thing now happening is that messages I have recently opened and read then appear in bold type in the message window as unread when I get my new mail.
This happens even though Mail is still open on my desktop when the Mini is in sleep mode overnight and I open it the next day.

The emails are basically unread as fasr as Mail is concerned. You can mark them all as read by going to the edit menu and selecting all then control clicking one of them and choosing mark as read.

  • Mail Slow, re-downloading messages

Mail has worked very well for me for quite some time---but over the last week or so I've been having a lot of problems.
    Symptoms:
When I open mail I typically see only messages that came in 2 or 10 or 24 hours ago. Very slowly more recent messages will start to show up.
Often it will take a long time for the contents of a message to download when I open a message.
Sometimes all my mail for two or three months will disappear, then slowly come back.
The Mail Activity window usually shows messages downloading, often stalled.
The symptoms are similar for both machines. I've used the MacBook on different ISPs with similar symptoms.
    Here's the setup:
I have a Mini and a MacBook, both running 10.5.2.
I use Sync for Mail rules, signatures, smart mailboxes--but not for the accounts themselves.
I have four email accounts---three POP accounts and a Gmail account I have set up as an IMAP account.
The POP accounts all forward to the Gmail account.
The IMAP account is the only one setup to check messages automatically. The others are only there so I can send using those account details.
Mail is set to download messages for offline viewing.
I have tried: repairing permissions, deleting mail preferences, adding DNS settings and doing an archive and install on the MacBook. Nothing has worked.
    Any ideas?

I think I've figured out the problem, but haven't solved it. Gmail has a problem that will cause both the client AND web based mail to slow down dramatically if you are using an IMAP client. I have been using Apple mail to check my IMAP mail at Gmail---and that's the problem. If first developed in mid February and you can read all about it here:

  • Hyperlinks from mail slow to open

Whenever a hyperlink in mail is selected mail goes into a 'Not responding' mode for 45 to 50 seconds before opening. Mail will then continue to work normally until another hyperlink is selected.

  • Mail will not open message viewer or drafts

Hello.  I work on a 27" IMac 2.66 GHz 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running Mavericks 10.9.5.  Since installing the latest update mac mail has been running VERY slowly, even lagging substantially as I type.  Then in the last couple of days it has seemingly launched but no windows, no message viewer are visible.  I can quit it or force quit or restart the computer but it still will not open any windows.  I tried shutting off iCloud mail sharing yesterday and lo and behold it worked again.  But today although iCloud mail remains shut off it will not open.  I have opened the console and here are the recent messages:

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your administrator login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.

  • How to stop Mail hanging on open message?

I am running Mac OS X 10.8.2 on a new (mid 2012) MacBook Air 11 inch.
I am having a strange problem: I cannot seem to close an open window inside
Mail, which displays an email.  I've tried Force Quit several times, but no luck.
The event which triggered this was Latexian (a LaTeX editor), which crashed.
It generated a crash report, and opened a window in mail to which the report
was attached and addressed to [email protected]  However, I cannot
send the mail, or close the window.
In Activity Monitor it is possible to send a signal to Mail process: Hangup,
Interrupt, Quit, Abort etc.  Will one of these do the trick?
If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to take this in to the Genius Bar.
    Thanks for any help.
    Sandeep.

    Thanks John,
The "When all else fails - pull the plug" method does work here. And I can see the logic behind your answer.
As this is not a frequent occurrence (thank heavens! - probably a bad hair day), I'll not take you up on the suggestion to remove the send button from view - but I appreciate your thoroughness.
Is there no software-driven way to remove mail from the sending mode?

  • 8800 Very Slow At Opening New Messages

I have a 8800 running the 4.5.0.124 version of the software and it is very slow when opening messages.
This only happens when opening unread messages and can take 1 minute+ to open. Once an email has been opened once it is instant. (Even messages that have only been read in Outlook). When it is 'opening' the message the device is completly unresponsive then will suddenly either open the message or if it has been longer it will lock the device.
I have also tried using the 4.5.0.55 software and this still has the same issue.
There are no entries being put into the error log while this is happening.

    Check these links:

  • Mail keeps quitting when opening message using Mavericks - any solution

Using MacBook Pro 2010, installed Mavericks, opened Mail. When opening messages, Mail quits. Is my problem unique - is there any fix?

    This worked for me:
    * open Internet Accounts in System Preferences;
    * inactivate all accounts that are linked to Mail
(as soon as I had inactivated my @me account, Mail opened but wasn't responsive, eating up lots of CPU)
    * open Mail - should work now, just without any accounts
    * go to mail preferences and activate each account one by one
(it seems as if Mail cranks up CPU usage after each activation, but it calms down after a few moments)
    Now Mail works again perfectly.
    Hope that helps others too!

  • N70 Slow to open applications etc...

Hi, can anyone tell me why the N70 is slow on startup and slow to open messages, or any other aspect on the phone. This is infuriating.
I am with Orange. Firmware version after pressing *#0000# comes up as 2.0537.1.718-09-05 RM-84 but I wouldn't have a clue what this means.
    Thanks

2.0537.1.7 = the phone's software (firmware) version number
    18-09-05 = the date it was created/built/compiled
    RM-84 = Nokia's product code for the N70
Based on the discussions here the slowness seems to (might) be related to operator customized phone software (firmware) versions (at least those versions starting from 2, like yours 2.05...etc.).
Generic/retail versions of firmware are already at version 3.something for the N70 (newer/more recent, that is).
A Nokia service/repair center should be able to update your phone. Find the nearest one and ask them:

  • I can't open my mail unless I use the Enter/Return key or go to the File -Open Message

Up until yesterday I could open an email just by double clicking the message. Now if I want to open a message I have to use the Enter/Return key or go into FILE and press Open Message.
The only thing different since yesterday morning is that I decided to turn off File Vault --that process took all day but finally finished and that's when I ran into problems with mail.
I've checked my mail settings and they are the same as before. Have OSX Yosemite 10.10.1 installed.

Thank you for your response. I finally found out why this was happening. It had to do with the Trackpad settings for my Mac. I adjusted the track speed to a slower speed as it was set quite fast. This seems to have fixed the problem :)

I have an iMac, running x10.5.  My email is very slow, even opening a previously downloaded message.  The computer is otherwise fast.  What gives?

Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
If you have IMAP accounts, you might want to delete the accounts then add back so they download all messages from the server again.
