Mail slows down, hangs in Exchange, only complete restart helps...

Mail runs quick and good for one or two days, then at some points it hangs while showing „Synchronizing with Server“/„Opening Postbox“/„Receiving new mails“ in the activity box forever.
Mail could be regularly quit then (although it takes around 100 seconds till it disapears), but the error will be back as soon as I reopen Mail.
Only after completely restarting my Macbook, everything runs fine again for another one or two days…

Thanks all for the input.
Mattn -- I've never been able to spot a particular app or process suddenly hogging the %CPU column in Activity Monitor; nevertheless in the bottom pane, under the "System Memory" tab (the one I usually leave open) the green part of pie chart just seems to get gobbled up much faster than when doing the same activities in 10.4.8.
Alan and Kiraly -- will try out your suggestions and let you know how I fare over the coming days. Am particularly interested in Kiraly's SuperDuper scenario, since it so happens I just got SD! a few days ago, and have already used it to duplicate both my System Drive and my Media Drive onto matching external FW drives.
So Kiraly -- when you do this clone-swap operation, do you let SD! do the eraasing of the original, or do you erase the "master" copy first using Disk Utilities? And once done, how long do you find it keeps things in "super snappy" mode?
Thanks,
John Bertram

(Meantime, am still curious to know if this apparent system slowdown and/or memory loss under 10.4.9 is an officially recognized "issue" -- which a Google search would suggest -- or just an assortment of unrelated and isolated cases.)

  • Mail slow down; too many messages?

    Mail (4.4) has slowed down a bunch here. I click on an unread message and it takes a good 5 seconds (or more) to show the message and any pics in it. (most of the time it seems to display the wrong message for a quick spell, then go and wait on the correct message)
    I do have 9 accounts (and 3 dead ones) Most IMAP and some POP. I do sync and also keep/move a bunch to the On My Mac section.
    Is there a way to find the total # of messages in Mail? (not just a selected folder)
    I might just go the mailSteward route and keep Apple Mail lean and mean.

    I wish I could offer a solution ... I'm posting because I'm also suffering from brutally slow search in Apple Mail. I have multiple mailboxes with lots of messages using IMAP and POP with Gmail but must it really take (literally) a minute to type something into the box and get results? Even more frustrating, typing into the box is slow ... each letter takes 5-10 seconds to apppear!
    I tried "vacuuming" my mailbox according to instructions I found online. That made it a little smaller but didn't help noticeably. My sense is that the indexing is screwed up or I simply have too many messages and it's choking on it.
    I'd love anyone's input! I'm a recent convert (back) to Mac OS and I'm just not sure how to begin fixing this problem.

  • Mail Slows Down my Internet Speed

    After the recent November 10.6.5 update, the Mail app brings my internet connection to a crawl. I used to have a solid 12Mbps connection and <25ms ping times but while Mail runs, is kills the speed to less than 2Mbps and over 200ms ping times.
    I have Mail configured as IMAP to my GMail account. Everything worked fine up until I did the OS X update. I even deleted my account from Mail preferences and re-entered the account information...no change.
    Any help?

    I had this exact same problem. It suddenly started when I reset my router to the original settings. Every thing suddenly was slow, then I finally figured out it was Mac Mail, searched Google for an answer, found this thread, then went in to my router page, since no one could figure out the cause. ***BINGO***
    I fixed it by going to the Firewall settings.
    IP Flood Detection   [square box here] Enable
    I un-checked the square box and slow speed be gone!!!!!! This was in the Ubee router at
    http://192.168.100.1/RgContentFilter.asp
    but for other routers, it might also have a Firewall setting like this some where. Hunt through your settings at
    http://192.168.100.1/
    It looks like my Linksys router thinks that there is an attack going on and slows down my connection.
    is what gave me the idea to go hunting through the router, a uBee router. Thanks.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router

  • Mail slow to access gmail - but only on one computer

    In my office are an iMac and a MacBook Pro, both with Mavericks and latest Mail updates, both on the same network.
    The iMac is often an hour behind the MBP to receive the same gmails. Why? I've found that it helps to shut dow Mail and reopen it.
    (I also have three iOS devices accessing the same gmail accounts - it's only the one iMac which is slow)
    Thanks!

    I was wondering if there was a Server involved, & while I know very little about LDAP, I think once it is available in each account, you could still do that, but you may need to but a delay script in ahead of it to wait for the connection.
    There are other ways to do it, but I'm not sure how/if they'd work since an account has to login first.
    Any chance you could just store/have that APP on the Mac in question?

  • Slows down, hangs then fails to restart - Hardware or software ?

    Hello everyone.
    This has happened a couple of times in the last week. I'll be working away and applications suddenly start hanging for long periods of time. It might take up to 5 minutes to get a menu to pop down for example. All applications start mis-behaving and if I try to get activity monitor or a terminal up, they just bounce up and down on the dock for a while then stop. Eventually they may start or not. During most of this I have the bouncing ball of death going on. Yet I can still drag windows around the screen, switch between the and they refresh correctly. Yet they won't minimise, maximise, or respond in any other way.
    Mostly I end up having to hard reboot to get things working again. Then a while later it may start to miss-behave again. It's also come back from sleep in a totally frozen state which won't respond to anything.
    The other night though, after a reboot from frozen system it then efused to start. I got a grey screen and nothing for about 4 or 5 boots in a row until I gave up and inserted the install disk.
    Both premissions repair and disk repair reported no problems. I rebooted and everythings been fine.
    So I'm wondering if I have an hardware issue or a software issue. What do you guys think ? Thsi is my first Mac so I don't have any experience to go on.
    MacBook Pro (2 months old) Leopard 10.5.2.
    Thanks
    Derek

    What you are describing is definitely not normal, but it could represent any number of problems. My first suspicion is a bad hard drive, after you ran Disk Utility from the startup disk, have the problems reappeared?

  • Sending mail slowed down

    Last few days, when sending mail, the wheel spins fpr a good 20 to 30 seconds before the router shows sending mail, ie flicking wireless light. Although our speeds are possibly the worlds slowest, it normally starts going straight away. I am on a 384kbps line. ISP is Mweb. They say my line is fine. Line via Telkom. They tell me all is well. Speedtest.net shows ping, .94ms , download , .38Mbps and upload is .11Mbps. It might be my imagination but it could be that when I click ' check mail ' after ' send ' it seems faster. Maybe thats just a timing thing. Any ideas? Thanks, Duncan

    Clicking ' check mail ' makes no difference at all. Whatever I send, the wheel next to' sent' spins first for 35 seconds before 'mail activity' shows it's going. Since new, September '08, it's shown in 'mail activity' and went instantly. Or at least started going instantly, time dependant on size. Everything else is fine. Websites as quick as normal etc.

  • I cant figure out what is slowing down my mbp i7 quad core. Help?!

    This is a used machine I bought off CL. Upgraded to 10.8.3 and upgraded RAM to 8 gb. Has been wrking great. Suddenly delay between input and output. I click wait then it responds.....like a pc.....same with typing or any other comand and constant pinwheeling. closed all applications cleaned all temp caches. Used onyx to do its magic. All to no avail. My hard drive is at 290 of 500 gb.....my old intell core duo 2009 w 4gb ram is whirring along running all the same software. Its HD is at the same ratio.
    Please help this is a mid 2012 15inch MBP i7 quad core. What could be slowing it down?

    You'll have to backup only user files to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
    Then hold command r keys down and reboot the machine, use Disk Uility Erase on the Macintosh HD and move the slider one spot to the right, then click erase, this will Zero Erase the entire partition, takes hours, but let it complete.
    Then quit and reinstall OS X fresh with your AppleID and password/update and install your software, then last add files back, do a scan using the free ClamXav just in case.
    If you still have problems, do a extended Hardware Check, should check the RAM and replace with the original and see if the problem goes away.

  • I recently just got my iMac and everyother time i turn it on it slows down and sometimes is unresponsive, can anyone help?

    Can anyone help? i don't understand why this happens

    If you aren't already backing your computer up, you'll need an external drive at least as large as the computer's and let TimeMachine run to create the backup. You don't want to lose anything you've created.
    Now read this article from Apple about how to perform an erase and OS reinstall. After this has been done you'll be asked if you want to restore your computer from a backup. Select restore from disk and choose the drive you backed up to.  Then I suggest that you select only your account - that's your data - and that you reinstall your programs manually.

  • Dreamweaver CS5.5 Slow down when minimising and loading pages.

    Hi there
    I'm having a really strange problem with Dreamweaver CS5.5
    I'm currently in the process of building a CMS for a client and I am experience slow down in Dreamwever when opening and closing certain pages, it also causes slow down/hanging when opening and minimising Dreamweaver itself if these certain pages are open at the time. Which starts to get very annoying when you're swapping between Photoshop and Dreamweaver all the time...
    I narrowed it down to a CSS file causing the slow down/hanging. This being the main stylesheet for the CMS... admin.css
    When I comment out the CSS file Dreamweaver minimises and maximises quickly, and the page in question opens fast.
    The stylesheet is about 900 lines long at the moment, but I've got php and javascript files (and also other CSS files) which are much longer and none of them cause slow down/hanging.
    I've looked myself but from what I can see all of the CSS is valid.
    Any ideas guys?
    Thanks in advance

    I can't explain this at all, but I've solved it.
    I changed the style below:
    @media only screen and (min-width: 35em) {
    .ir { display: block; border: 0; text-indent: -999em; overflow: hidden; background-color: transparent; background-repeat: no-repeat; text-align: left; direction: ltr; *line-height: 0; }
    .ir br { display: none; }
    .hidden { display: none !important; visibility: hidden; }
    .visuallyhidden { border: 0; clip: rect(0 0 0 0); height: 1px; margin: -1px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0; position: absolute; width: 1px; }
    .visuallyhidden.focusable:active, .visuallyhidden.focusable:focus { clip: auto; height: auto; margin: 0; overflow: visible; position: static; width: auto; }
    .invisible { visibility: hidden; }
    /* Clear Floated Elements + Fix */
    .clear {clear:both; display:block; overflow:hidden; visibility:hidden; width:0; height:0;}
    .clearfix:before,.clearfix:after{content: '.'; display: block; overflow: hidden; visibility: hidden; font-size: 0; line-height: 0; width: 0; height: 0;}
    .clearfix:after {clear: both;}
    .clearfix {zoom: 1;}
    /*END DONT CHANGE*/
    To this:
    @media only screen and (min-width: 35em) {
    .ir { display: block; border: 0; text-indent: -999em; overflow: hidden; background-color: transparent; background-repeat: no-repeat; text-align: left; direction: ltr; *line-height: 0; }
    .ir br { display: none; }
    .hidden { display: none !important; visibility: hidden; }
    .visuallyhidden { border: 0; clip: rect(0 0 0 0); height: 1px; margin: -1px; overflow: hidden; padding: 0; position: absolute; width: 1px; }
    .visuallyhidden.focusable:active, .visuallyhidden.focusable:focus { clip: auto; height: auto; margin: 0; overflow: visible; position: static; width: auto; }
    .invisible { visibility: hidden; }
    /* Clear Floated Elements + Fix */
    .clear {clear:both; display:block; overflow:hidden; visibility:hidden; width:0; height:0;}
    .clearfix:before,.clearfix:after{content: '.'; display: block; overflow: hidden; visibility: hidden; font-size: 0; line-height: 0; width: 0; height: 0;}
    .clearfix:after {clear: both;}
    .clearfix {zoom: 1;}
    /*END DONT CHANGE*/
    Moved it outside of the media query. It was put there by mistake by the looks of it.

  • In the last week, Firefox slows down until it's unusable after about 30 mins

    As per the title. Firefox slows down until it is almost completely unresponsive the longer it is left open. When it is restarted, it works fine for a while but soon slows down a lot.
    I have about 50 tabs open and have never experienced this issue at all. I still have plenty of RAM free. When it's slow, even tasks such as opening menus or using the awesome bar slow down massively.
    I suspect a tab is at fault but can't think of an easy way to determine which one.

    I'm using the same antivirus for the last year and never had this issue before. Disabling antivirus doesn't help either.

  • Speed up/slow down clips

    Hi
    I must be missing a trick here. Does anyone know how to speed up/slow down clips in i-movie?
    Any help appreciated,
    thanks

    Did apple actually decide not to add these feature on IM08. If so why?
    I doubt the Apple made a conscious decision to remove any features. It is more likely the current inability to "thread" the command structure that is causing all of the problems. Basically, the old application allowed third-parties to create code routines that could be selected and called directly/immediately by the user when he or she wished to create a special effect. In essence, the source data is passed to the called routine, modified on the spot, and then inserted into the "timeline" replacing the source content. However, iMovie '08 does not perform any immediate/direct processing. Instead, it lists the source segments to be modified and states what "effect" is to be applied. No real action is taken until the file is actually to be shared or exported. Then, and only then, is a physical movie created. Therefore, the problem is to create an application (iMovie '08) with the capability of extending its own command list, as well as, define these new commands as a process or series of processes which can be called independently at a later time. If your are familiar with FORTH or a similar programming language which has a threaded command structure (i.e., one in which you can define new commands in terms of previously defined commands and formally add them to the command list/structure) then you will likely understand the problems that need to be overcome here by Apple and all third-party companies likely to be involved in creating/re-creating "plug-ins" for iMovie '08.
