Mail - SMTP Server Offline

I am unable to send emails from my new MacBook on Mail using the SMTP server. I have a hotmail account and the server has apparently been offline for about a week. I am able to receive emails with no problems but Mail is unable to connect to the outgoing server. Also, I don't know if it has any impact, but I believe that Microsoft are trying to phase hotmail accounts to Outlook. Any advice?

Thanks, but I found that thread but it made no difference.
I was able to find ports 25 and 587, but not 465 - if that matters. The text on ports wasn't terribly clear to be honest.
465 is not a supported port.
Here are the correct settings, are you using them?
Incoming (POP3) Server
Server address: pop3.live.com
Port: 995
SSL Encryption: Yes
Outgoing (SMTP) Server
Server address: smtp.live.com
Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)
Authentication: Yes
TLS or SSL Secure Encrypted Connection: Yes
User name: Your email address
Password: Your password
If you don’t want email to be deleted from your Outlook.com inbox after it’s downloaded to your email app, select the Leave a copy of messages on the server option.

This is to address smtp server going offline:
    troubleshooting steps:
    Option 1.
    - Mailbox - Take account Online
    if that doesn't work...
    Option 2.
    - check smtp server
    - Mail - Preferences - Accounts - Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
    - remove current smtp server then add again
    - take account offline then online
    - quit and reopen Mac Mail
    Option 3.
    - delete and recreate account
Anyone experiencing the same problem? I have att.net. One email working with same smtp server. Other email setup, same att account with the same settings but smtp offline. Is this a Mac update issue? Time warner email accounts having the same problem.

  • Can't send e-mail- smtp server offline or disappeared

    Hi!
I've had issues sending e-mail from my @mac address for about a week.  I can send from iCloud on the web but not from iPad, iPhone or MacBook.
Sometimes the server is offline, sometimes just not there at all - the error msg gives the smtp info and says I can't connect. Connection Doctor says everything is fine.
    I've tried….
    - turning off iCloud on all devices and re-booting
    - removing a second e-mail account
    - manually changing smtp settings
    Receiving mail is fine.
    can anyone help??!

    Hey ruthccraig1,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s an issue sending emails from your iOS and Mac devices. The article linked below provides troubleshooting tips, like reconfiguring a hardware firewall, which can help you resolve the issue sending emails from your devices.

  • Mac OS X Leopard Mail SMTP server keeps going offline and won't come on

My SMTP in mail on my email accounts keeps going offline and I can't work out how to get it working again. My internet connection is fine. I am receiving emails. I was able to send earlier on my business email account but now my .mac account has gone offline and then my business on went on me.
I only started using my business email account in mail today and loaded the account into mail. Does anyone have any answers for this as I can see there have been some other people who might have had a similar problem but I can't see any fixes?
I have deleted and reloaded both my .mac and work account a couple of times now and restarted my computer but still no good.
    Can anyone help?

I have that offline mail smtp server when I try to send emails from work with my macbook. I've always been able to send emails away from home using the login and password in the smtp configurations. It's a real pain since I use one email account for work and personal business. I can receive email but cannot send any. Everytime I have to answer an email while I'm working, I have to go to the browser, go to my provider's mail page, login and send from there my emails.
Do we have the same problem?

  • SMTP Server Offline

    Hi all, OS X 10.8.3:
For some time, through several OS upgrades, Mail.app has been unable to create iCal reminders from appropriate date/time data. Not only does the reminder fail to appear in iCal, but Mail behaves bizarrely afterwards, necessitating quit and relaunch.
But now I have a much more annoying problem. I am told "SMTP Server offline". Initially, I assumed it was a temporary problem at my ISP's end. But then I realized that the oher Mac - on the same network - can still send.
Restart makes no idfference. DFA and Repair Permissions report no problems, while Techtool Pro finds hundreds of "bad" files.
Console generates this error message every 10 minutes... is there a clue here?
"16/04/2013 9:40:08.050 AM Mail[222]: [<_LibSasl2SASLClient: 0x7fb2dd8241b0> mechanism: PLAIN security layer: no] Failed to start the SASL connection
    SASL(-1): generic failure: "
    Thanks.

    I have found the solution.
One of the settings under Mail.app's Preferences, Accounts, Advanced pane is "Use SSL?" This must be left UNchecked for my ISP. The confusing thing is, it WAS left unchecked.
I had a new email being composed, and decided to open the pull-down SMTP List at the bottom of the email dialog's header. I selected "Edit SMTP List" and then highlighted the troublesome entry. Under the Advanced tab, was the setting "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" and it was selected!
I.e. despite being set to OFF in the Preferences dialog, it was ON in the "SMTP List" dialog.
This would seem to be a bug. Anyone know how to report this to Apple?

  • Mail SMTP server problem

My iCloud does not work in Mail in all my apple devices (mobile, Ipad, Mac etc.). It seems that my Apple Mail soft seems to disable my smtp server for outgoing mails (iCloud server, offline). However, I can still receive all incoming mails ...

Have you unchecked the box marked Mail in the iCloud preference pane and then checked it again? If not, please do that now and test.
I've tried what you said, but nothing changes.
I've tried also to sign out completely from iCloud and then sign in. It should rebuild the credentials stored in the Mac, but nothing works.
I post the screen that appears after it fails to send the message.
But on the other hand it works on the iPhone!!! I've unchecked and checked the mail box in the settings and now it works properly!
The problem still persist on the Mac. In other words this is not linked to the iCloud preferences, but on the Mac itself.

This problem may occur at low-use times when Messaging is installed with the
Trend virus protection software on the same system.
    <P>
Change the version of the Trend software from 3.0 to the older 2.62 version.

It's possible that your provider has made a change.
I think STARTTLS usually is used with port 587, instead of the standard SSL port 465.
Could you look up your provider's current SMTP settings to see whether your "Outgoing Server" settings need to be updated? If it's difficult to translate between your provider's help page and Thunderbird's dialog controls, you could provide a link to your provider's help page.

  • IPhoto 11 (9.2.1) can't use iCloud Mail smtp server for email.

iPhoto 11 (9.2.1) can't use iCloud Mail smtp server for email.  "The email server didn't recognise username/password combination".  Both appear correct in preferences/accounts.  Mail sends and receives messages perfectly.
(This problem also occurs when trying to send from Thunderbird, however both iPhoto and Thunderbird can send perfectly well using the Gmail server).

    Hi there
I should explain that I have 5 days experience of the iMac but have had a working iCloud account with my iPad for several months.  I don't think this is an iCloud issue as such. My thought is that this is something to do with the Mail application itself and its relationship to my Apple ID etc. (Perhaps when the iMac first configured itself?)
I have deleted and manually reset both Mail and iPhone account settings for iCloud using the Apple recommended settings and I have tentatively checked that the username/password combination is as expected in Keychain but I'm too much of an Apple novice to go any further with that.
On a PC I think I would try reinstalling the Mail programme but I don't see that as an option.

  • HT2623 smtp server offline-please advise

icloud server offline, cannot send email from mac, will not allow me to change settings because incoming mail server field will not allow text to be entered

You should confirm that your incoming (IMAP) and outgoing (SMTP) servers are set up as detailed in this page:

There will usually be a 'pxx' number stuck on the front and you can ignore that. Please also always post your system when you have a qur=ery as it can make a considerable difference to the answer.

  • SMTP Server offline since last security update in Mavericks?

    Dear community
Since last weeks security update in OX10 Mavericks Version 10.9.2 the SMTP Server in my Apple mail went offline. According to my provider all is fine and should work. I could already fix this proplem once by reentering the passwort in the advanced settings to the SMTP server. It worked fine for a day and is now offline again. After trying trice to manually add the password again, the server came online again.
Is there any solution to stabilisize the SMTP server settings?
    Thanks for any tips

  • Mail--outgoing server offline

Recently one of my outgoing mail servers is listed as "offline."  No matter what I try I have not been able to use it to send e-mail.  I've tried to delete and reinstall the mailbox, but that did not work.
Is this a Mountain Lion issue?  Is there a fix.
By the way--the SMTP server for my gmail account does stay online.

I'm having same issue.  Works on my old Mountain lion machine...same settings and Ipad

  • TS3276 Outgoing smtp server 'offline'

My outgoing smtp server is correctly configured yet shows as 'offline'. How can I put it online?
    Thank u.

Assume you've solved the problem yourself or it corrected itself but if not try going into your mail preferences and the account settings.  For each account you can edit the outgoing SMTP server list.  Go into the advanced settings for the account showing offline.  Even if there is a password stored, retype the account password and click OK.  The account should go back online.

The debug output doesn't show an obvious problem. You're
going to have to actually debug your program. A debugger
    might be helpful.
