Mail, Software Update, other OS applications don't start

I have a PowerPC G4 here at work that is running OS X 10.4.11, which updated four different things this morning, including a Safari update, a Quicktime update, an iTunes and an overall OS update... now I believe the last two did not install properly and when the computer restarted I was unable to open Mail or any other OS applications such as iTunes, and I also can't open Software Update to try to install the updates again.
Has anyone ever had a similar problem or can anyone suggest anything to fix it?
Thanks!

The installer will start, you select your language, then when a menu bar appears, select Utilities menu > Disk Utility. You don't have to quit the installer; you do have to run Du from the Du app on the dvd, not the HDD. (If you are running DU from the Utilities folder on your HDD, the Repair option will be grayed out, and Verify will report "The underlying task reported failure on exit.")
Note also that while you must run DU from the Install DVD to repair your disk, you should run DU from the internal HDD to repair permissions. (You can run Repair Permissions from the Install DVD DU, but it doesn't check all the right places.)
The iTunes update should not have caused the issues you are having, but a failed/interrupted OS update can. You can try reinstalling the 10.4.11 combo update manually by downloading it here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
(Edit: I see that Limnos linked to both the PPC and Intel combo updates - you need the PPC version.)
Hope this helps...

  • Software Update Error and Application connectivity problems

Hi. Hoping someone can help me with issues I've been having since we added a wireless access point to our network at home two weeks ago. I'm sharing a network with two pcs, a pc laptop and a ps3. All of which are working fine either using the wireless access point or ethernet through our router.
I have a macbook which is picking up the wireless fine, apart from a few applications. The biggest problem is that software update isn't connecting. I get a message telling me there is a networking error: NSURLError Domain - 1100. I go through the network diagnostics and it tells me that my connection is working correctly.
Another (less worrying but annoying) problem is that some widgets (facebook, wikipedia, translater etc) are not picking up the connection either. Facebook iphoto exporter also doesn't work. There is no in-built firewall in the access point and I haven't changed any firewall settings on my system (which was working perfectly with the ethernet connection). All I changed was the DNS server address.
The only time I have used airport previously is in the library at my university, where I needed to use a proxy address. I'm wondering if this may be interfering with my connection settings now, but am unsure of how to change the setting around. I'm a new mac user and this is the first issue I've had issues. Any help/suggestions are thoroughly appreciated.
    thanks.

I'd been having this problem for the past few weeks (causing Software Update to fail with NSURLError -100 and the iTunes radio service to fail) and just fixed it myself.
For me the issue had to do with proxy settings in the browser versus proxy settings in System Preferences. For example, if you run Tor/Vidalia with Firefox, the browser has its own proxy settings that get changed when you activate Tor. But if you use Safari or anything else to set up the proxy, it's the network settings under System Preferences that get affected.
To check this, go to (Apple menu)>System Preferences...>Network, then choose whichever network interface you're currently using. If the lock icon in the lower left-hand corner is locked, click on it and authenticate with your password. Now click Configure... and choose the Proxies tab.
On my machine, I have "Configure proxies:" set to "Manually" (I've never used the other option, "Using a PAC file", so if you have that set I'm not sure how to debug it). Now look through the items in the "Select a proxy server to configure" panel. If there is anything checked there, it should be for a specific reason. If something is checked and you don't know why, try unchecking it.
Finally, click on Apply Now (giving your password again if prompted), close the System Preferences dialog, and try Software Update again.
This solved my problems (I had been fiddling with a local proxy for OS X Mail and Thunderbird). Your mileage may vary. Give that a shot and report back if it helps (or if it doesn't).

  • Help! Why has software update stopped my applications?

Hello, i recently installed the software updater for iPod, security etc. When i restarted my iBook, i tried opening Safari and Mail. They just bounce in the dock once or twice then stop (i.e. they don't start!) Does anyone have a solution to this or how software updater would have stopped them? Oh and i also tried re-doing software updater and that does exactly the same thing.
    Any help appreciated

  • After software update, icons bounce, apps don't load

I recently returned to my iMac after a three-week absence and all was working normally. I ran software update but didn't take much notice of what was being upgraded. However, I now have 10.6.2 and everything is up to date. However, after rebooting a find that a large number of applications will not load. The applications bounce for a few moments but nothing happens. iCal, Address run normally but almost everything else, including iLife apps, refuse to load.
I've done the usual test, including repairing permissions and running Disk Warrior to make sure everything is ok. At the back of my mind I think I've heard of this problem before but cannot think where. Anyone have any ideas of what might happen.
Note: I ran the same updates on my MacBook Pro and MacBook Air and everything is running normally. The problem is confined to the iMac.

Hmmm, I must be looking with my eyes closed, I cannot find the button to make my own thread. So I'll just hijack this one for the time being :P
I have a similar to Michael. I updated Safari to 4.0.4 last night and not long after booting up and using Safari, and even FF by itself after a while the pages don't display properly and the screen saver stops, system freezes (about half a dozen times now). Dock icons go all weird. I did repair permissions... nothing. I just reset PRAM, worked ok with some problems, but it has just totally froze again.
    Reinstall?

  • HT201380 keep having scrolling problems with Maverick on both iMac and Mac Pro despite downloading mail software update

Have scrolling problems with Maverick despite downloading mail update on both IMAC and Mac Pro
Have to reboot and it helps for awhile then stalls again

The Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update introduced connection issues as a result of (according to the documentation) "Mail now supports connecting to mail servers through a SOCKS proxy". This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it'd be worth going to System Preferences > Network and making sure the SOCKS Proxy is not enabled in the network configuration used to connect to the Internet.
Also, it looks like the crashes you're talking about are actually freezes, i.e. Mail becomes unresponsive rather than quitting unexpectedly. In Mail, open Window > Activity Viewer, and see whether Mail displays there what it's doing when it freezes. Actually, you may be able to avoid having to force quit Mail by canceling whatever it's doing (by clicking on the red stop icon of the activity).
Reinstalling Mail will probably accomplish nothing, but it might be worth reinstalling the Combo Update for the type of machine and the version of Mac OS X you're using (which you would have to do anyway if you wanted to reinstall Mail):
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:

Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

  • When formatting hd, how do i backup software updates & other misc??

    Hey guys
Just want to format my OS drive and wanted to know where the software updates that I have spent time downloading every week are stored, so I can back them up?
Also what else things should i backup. I remember to always backup the safari bookmark files and preferences and iCAL, what else?

Actually, you keep quite a few files in your home folder, you just don't know you do. Anything on your desktop is actually in a folder inside your home folder (unless it's on the desktop of a different volume), and all preference files are also stored in your home folder. If you use Mail, all your mail is kept in your home folder, as are your iCal files and Safari bookmarks. If you use iPhoto, iTunes or iWeb, guess where they store their stuff? Basically, there's a lot in there, even if you don't know about it.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, no longer get software updates on my applications

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks last night, and now I can no longer download updates on my applications for my iMac.
Before upgrading, whenever I got a notification saying that there was an update available, I would simply click on the App Store icon on the dock and be directed to the Mac store, where I would click "download all".
After upgrading, when I get to the Mac store, a pop-up appears that asks for a password, along with a pre-filled box next to it that has an Apple ID I have never seen before. It does not allow me to change the Apple ID to my own.
This is a previously owned machine from 2013, that used to belong to someone else at the office of my employer. They had previously purchased all the software and applications for it, such as Final Cut Pro, and they had installed them all before shipping the iMac to me.
All I want to do is update the software to the latest version of iMovie, iPhoto and Final Cut Pro.
Could it be that somehow, after switching over to Mavericks, the system is now reverting to ask for my employer's Apple ID instead of my own? It seems weird though, because before upgrading to Mavericks, I was able to update any software any time that I got a notification -- about a dozen or so things in the week since the machine arrived.
And I would not think that there would be any problem with simply updating something like iMovie from last month's version to the one released on January 23.

  • Installed software update, now open applications are not appearing in Dock. Help??

I installed the newest software update from Apple last week and ever since then when I open an application, the icon doesn't appear in the Dock. It's becoming a problem because I have multiple programs running, which is slowing down my computer, but short of going into Activity Monitor, I can't tell what's running.

While holding down the, "option," key, click on, "Go," on the Apple Menu. Open the Library foder and then the Preferences folder, then find and delete the file named, "com.apple.dock.plist." Then logout and log back in.

  • Safari, mail, software update very slow on new imac

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to a 21.5" i3 imac and transferred everything from my old imac (core 2 duo, os 10.4.10)
anything involving the internet is painfully slow, safari 5.02, firefox, mail, even the software update (but once it "catches"- downloads are fast)
    I have tried the following:
    1.) Repaired disk permissions
    2.) Changed DNS
    3.) Reset Safari
    4.) Restarted computer
5.) Disabled all plugins (only had one which was an adobe reader)
No improvement- when I hookup my old computer- internet is fast.
Now for the really disturbing part- when I run windows 7 inside parallels 6, internet explorer is quick!
    Help!

Finally- the problem has been solved
on the second call to the cable company they flashed/reset the modem and now it is working perfectly (roadrunner wideband)-
the first time I called they just ran a diagnostic which appeared ok.
the second time they flashed to modem.
