Mail / Software Update / Web Won't Start After Time Machine Resurrect

Hi there.
Ran through some serious permissions issues trying to mess with the ACLs, as AFS wasn't working. So it shoved an ACL into some recursive folders, and it went all nasty, had to force restart.
So I tried to take out the ACL on the drive, then it wouldn't start.
Took a Time Machine backup from earlier on today, and I'm still getting ACLs. She's starting up, but won't get those services restarted for some reason.
Are they not on that drive? Time Machine says it rewrites the drive. I'm going to start an install of earlier on in the week, but am I not going to get this fixed? It's taken a long time to get this thing working, so I'm really worried.
Any ideas as to what I should do? How can I get the ACLs out of there? My custom ACLs are maybe 3 entries, so I could restart back where it was and set them again. It wasn't working anyway.
Cheers

BTW, spoke to Apple's peeps, and I had to do the following. Turns out, Time Machine and X Server don't really work to well. Because the /var/spool/ items are live, they can't be copied. Of course I told them that was a very important part of all this. I suggested a daemon to shadow those subdirs. Let's expect that in the future.
1. Image problem drive on alternative drive on server
2. Backup Server Admin prefs & Server Admin Settings on client
3. Backup Open Directory through Server Admin on alternative drive on server
4. Backup Workgroup Manager on client
5. Install OS X Server
6. Use upstream ISP for external DNS, switch to 192.168.1.5 (local server DNS) when server has imported info, restart
7. Get Server working with all preferences. Client might have to have Internal DNS (192.168.1.5), External DNS. Or, just internal DNS. It's interesting that the previous setup had both DNS' for client setup. I had to try to re-import, specifically, some services, to take their kak. Turn off the service for it to be best-receiving (that isn't a word). Then restart the service, and give it several seconds to fall into place with table creation, DNS checking, etc. Don't be too quick for this to happen.
8. Instal third party scripting language & MySQL
Advice: when in doubt, restart the box. Also, save time, image drives at several times. These are < 10 GB for the most part, if you turn off crap like global printer drivers, and localisations, during installation.
This restart, coupled with my DNS troubleshooting stuff the second time around (apparently the MAJOR problem with this software), saved me hours.
Cheers

    Hi,
Please try the steps below to resolve the issue:
1.net stop slsvc (select yes) in my case it was already stopped.
    2.in command prompt type:
    3.cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

10.To activate your OS, just type: slmgr.vbs –ato

  • External WD Passport won't recognize after Time Machine start.

I bought a WD passport 500 gb drive and when I initially plugged it in time machine saw it and when I asked it to use it- something happened and now NO icon appears in order to be selected nor does an icon show anywhere to even select. I changed the drive and the new one does the same. Cycles continously and never mounts. Did the usual- changed ports and changed wires. It just isn't recognized no matter what. What to do?

    jimmyb12015 wrote:
No. The drive is not reflected in any window. Not on my computer or disk utility. It initially was shown just before Time Machine started. It was then I escaped from time machine and I eventually returned the first drive after reformating it to fat 32 (on a windows machine) and it still wouldn't show up the MAC. The second drive now does the same as the first (doesn't show and cycles) but never showed up in any form on the MAC.
If the MAC has a register then my guess is some information about any external disk has been altered and I should need to to return it to it's original setting. That is because the second drive is doing the same as the first. I just don't know how to do that or even look.
If it uses the MBR (Master Boot Record) partition scheme, for Windoze, TM may have started to reformat it to GUID, but had that interrupted when you cancelled. If DU can't see it at all, there's not much you can do from your Mac. You may need to reformat it on a PC, then do it over on your Mac, via item #5 in the FAQ.
There are reports of problems with some WD drives having not working well on Macs. You might want to check their website support/forums, etc.

  • MacBook Pro won't book after Time Machine restore

I have a late 2010 MacBook Pro that had 4 bad blocks on the hard drive.  I reformatted and zeroed out the drive and then restored from a Time Machine backup which was Mac OS 10.6.6.  Now the MBP won't boot.  I get the Apple logo and the spinning gear, and that's it.  I gave it as long as 20 minutes but no boot.  Starting from the DVD shows I have that system on the drive in Startup Disk. I've run myriad utilities including Disk Utility and Disk Warrior and everything is fine.
Before I reinstall 10.6, I thought I'd poke my head in here and tap the collective wisdom.

Your situation sounds a bit similar to mine except you had the gray screen before you did anything, which to me means you had a problem that already surfaced, where I did not.  I don't know if the Windoze partition has anything to do with it, but if you are running SN 10.6 you can try the same solution I did.  Boot from the SN DVD and install a new version of SN over you old.  Don't worry, all your files will be there.  The installer is intelligent enough to realize you already have SN and will do the install over your old system files only.  This is the 'new' Archive and Install scenario that existed on previous versions of Mac OS X install DVDs.
You will then have to run updates to get the system back to whatever version you were running previously.
This is what I did and it worked fine, altho it was more time consuming than I wanted.

  • Macbook pro won't restart after time machine install on new hard drive

I installed a new 500 GB HD on my 13-inch mid 2010 Macbook Pro (since the original crashed).  I successfully connected to the Disk Utility via the internet connection and started recovery from a recent Time Machine backup....but, the computer will not restart.  It's been stuck in the grey screen with the Apple logo and rotating status bar all night.  I shut it down and restarted, but it won't go past the grey screen state.  I can't find any answers on the Support Page.  Help. Any one else have this issue?  Should I have first installed the Lion OS X first and then restored from the Time Machine backup?
Also, wondering if all my programs (2011 ILife & IWork and Microsoft Office) will be reinstalled with the back up?  (I can't find my installation disks for ILife and IWork :-()

Time machine is easy to set up and theoreticaly recover from. There have been reports of problems when a different disk or computer is used.

For future reference you may wish to learn about and use cloning of the HDD. I use both CCC and SD to do this and consider it to be the most reliable way to back up and recover.

  • White screen & won't boot after Time Machine restore 10.8.2

    Hello,
I know someone posted a similar issue but that it was related to a hardware failure.  Mine was not a hardware failure.
Just wanted to give an FYI to anyone who may run into this issue.  I recently restored my Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup (10.8.2)
and I was getting a blank white screen at startup where the spinning line "|" would appear and then go away, and then come back, and then disappear...  Over and over.  Booting into single user mode resulted in the same issue.
I ended up re-installing Mountain Lion over itself and my machine booted sucessfully.  Did all the software updates and I'm back at 10.8.2 again.
This is just an FYI, something for you to try if you get the same error, hope this helps someone.

Startup command-s and at the prompt type reboot
    Then press return.

  • Aperture won't launch after Time Machine Migration

After a hard drive failure, I've just got my system all restored from a Time Machine backup, but when I try to launch Aperture it just fails.
Not sure whether there's something obvious I'm not doing, or whether I need to reinstall. The library package etc all seems to be where it ought to be.
    Any ideas welcomed!
    Thanks.

Thanks - that fixed it nicely.

  • Mountain Lion Server Web Server not working after time machine restore

Our Mountain Lion Server (mac mini) lost its drive yesterday.  We got a new mac mini and did a time machine restore.  Everything in the Server seems to be working (users, groups, file shares, etc) except for the web server.
Trying to connect to the server results in safari not being able to connect to the server.  Even just clicking on the "view server website" link in the Server app doesn't work.
We've tried stopping / restarting the services.  We have confirmed that the files in Library / Server with the web pages were restored.
Are there any gotchas, troubleshooting steps or guides anyone can point me to?  I'd like to get our wiki back.
    Thanks
    Jeff

  • Macbook won't boot after time machine backup

I installed a program on my Mac that was causing some problems so I decided to do a time machine restore. I booted into recovery mode, selected restore from time machine backup and let it run. It finished completely but it gets stuck at the startup screen. I get halfway on the loading bar and it does not progress past there. I've waited up to an hour.
I am running Yosemite on a mid 2009 macbook. I am using a SSD and I know with trim enabled it sometimes won't boot up but I disabled it via terminal.
I've also ran disk utility on my HD and on my external HD. I'm getting no errors on both.
    Anyone have any ideas?

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Imac won't restart after time machine restore

I restored my external firewire 800 hard drive from a time machine restore using my snow leopard insall disk.  The restore function said the restore was successful.  But when the computer restarted I got the folder with the question mark icon.  My internal hard drive went bad a year ago.
    What to do?

Did you restore the entire contents of your Mac from the Time Machine backup?  Was Time Machine backing up everything?
Try booting with an "option" key held down.  That will show the internal disk volume if it has a bootable copy of OS X on it.
You might try installing OS X over the top of what's currently on the disk.  If that doesn't help, erase the disk, install OS X on it, then use Setup Assistant (unless I'm misremembering and it's actually Migration Assistant) to transfer the TIme Machine contents again.
Incidentally, after things are working again, the first time Time Machine runs it will back up everything again.

  • IMac 27" won't boot (after Time Machine bug?)

    Hi everyone,
Firstly, I don't know if my iMac is an Intel machine or not.
I recently had my failing hard drive (seagate, I think) replaced by Apple.
I had backed up using a hard drive using Time Machine.
I attempted to restore my back up to my now fixed iMac. It failed after about 3%. I ran 'verify' in disk utility and it told me the hard drive with the back up was fine.
I tried again to get my back up onto my iMac. It failed again. Again after about 3%
Now, this is when I think I made my big mistake - I asked my computer to boot from the Mac harddrive. Does this mean I told my computer to boot from something that was only 3% installed?
Anyway, it will not boot. Lots of text pops up on the screen, it goes round and round in circles for a while. Then an icon resembling a no entry road sign pops up and it gives up.
I have tried holding down command and r both with the Mac OS X Install DVD in the optical drive and not in.
I have tried holding down 'c' with the Mac OS X Install DVD in the optical drive.
    No luck.
Can anyone help please? Please tell me how I can provide further information. Take a video of what happens, perhaps?
    Thank you.

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • The disk won't eject after Time Machine backup

Each time im doing a time machine backup, the external drive does not eject, the icon becomes pale, but remains on the desktop. But when I did not just make a backup I can eject it normaly.
My disc contains two partitions, one with the backups. When my problem occurs the first partition is ejected but not the Time Machine one.
I tried to reformat the partition but the problem persists.
My hard drive is a GDrive mobile usb 1 TO purchased at the apple store.
    Did someone has a solution?
    Thank you !
PS; sorry for my bad english

Actually i found a potential solution, in majority of time it solved my problem, but some times (less frequently then before) it doesn't work And the disk still not eject. In the timemachine Settings, did the principal switch button is on "yes" or "no" ?
I was backing up manually, and I had put the switch to NO, and i think that was what cause the problem... When I Switched to YES, my disk ejected correctly for 95 % of time.
Try to turn this switch ON , if she is OFF.
I dont think that the problem is the age of the drive, mine is a 2014 one and i had this problem too.
