Mail -- Sometimes it autocompletes by first name, sometimes by last

In Mail, with some contacts it finds them when I start to type their first name (e.g., George ___), but in others, it will only find them if I start to type by their last name. In Address Book, both contacts just have first name, last name, and email fields filled in, i.e., they look the same.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michael

Only idea I have is for you to double check how the information is put in.
Select the contact your having problem with and edit. Make sure first and last names are not typed in one box. They should be in separate fields. Also, is the company box checked?

  • In address book, if I try to show first name before the last name, why do only a few names change?

Using address book on 10.7.2, when I go to "preferences" to change the display order between showing the "first name" before or after the last name, only about 25% of names will change.  The rest all stay in the same order.   Any ideas?

By default any outgoing email has the addresses saved in the Collected address book. You can turn this option off if you want.

  • Why are some contacts listed by first name others by last name.

I synchronize my iPhone with an MS Exchange Server. Some contacts on my iPhone are listed by first others by lastname. I checked my Outlook - All contacts are the same!
    Does someone know this Problem?

Unfortunately, I think that's just how android does it. I couldn't find a setting anywhere.

  • When I click an email address to "Add to Address Book", it ends up in my Contacts with the first name in the last name box (and vice versa)

I have seen this posted before without resolution on one of the old operating systems.  Does anyone have a solution to this.  How to we get Apple to fix this if there is no solution?

  • Address Book - Title of a person is missing  when entry has no first name

In Address Book - the title (prefix) of a person is missing when the contact has no first name. This is an issue both in the way that the names are displayed in the 'name' panel of Address Book, but more importantly when I print out a list of contacts if they don't have a first name it misses off their title. I need a list of all my customers printing off and also to print mailing labels for them.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Bonn.
Yes, I have the same in AddressBook in US English, if I use "prefix" for Dr.
But if I just "First Name" >> "Dr. Louis" "Last name" "Shapiro", it works fine. I never thought to use the prefix, so ignorance is bliss
You can send feedback @ Apple or file a bug report.

  • Address book names are now sorted by first name.

After installing Snow Leopard my mail it is now sorted alphabetically by the first name, not the last. How do I change it back?

I just talked to an Apple Product Specialist about the change in Address Book searching with Snow Leopard. Here is where it stands right now:
In all previous versions of Address Book, the user could simply type 'T' to instantly go to contacts with last names that start with 'T' (and businesses that start with 'T').
In Snow Leopard, Address Book can no longer search with one letter the way it did before; it uses a 'Spotlight' type of search where the user must type the full name in order to get an exact match. This type of searching is useful for finding documents on the Mac or searching the Internet, but is totally inefficient for finding contacts in Address Book.
It sounds like someone at Apple decided this was a better way to search for contacts, because this change in search method is described in the new Address Book 'Help' file; it says, "As you type, Address Book begins to search all the information on the cards, including notes, and displays matching contacts, with the matching text highlighted in each card." For example, let's say someone used to type 'T' to search for a contact named Bill Tilman. Now what happens is that Address Book stops at the first person who's first name starts with 'T', and highlights all the T's in the person's card (the T in 'telephone', the T in 'Street', etc. The user must now scroll through all their contacts manually to find Bill Tilman, or else manually type out the complete name 'Bill Tilman'. (If they just type 'Bill', they will only get the first person named Bill.)
I hope Apple will reconsider and will allow Address Book to do the quick one-letter searches by last name (as opposed to 'Sort' by last name, which it still has) like it used to. (Or at least make this a choice in Address Book Preferences.) This would also be more compatible with the way iPhone searches for contacts; when you select a letter in the iPhone's contacts, it finds contacts who's last name starts with that letter, as well as businesses, just like Address Book always used to.

  • I want to change the infotype 0002 field position(first name & lasname)

    Dear Freinds,
I have requirement where i have to change the positions of the first name and last name , as pe standard we will see is
the lastname under that field we will se the first name . As per the user he wanted first name and then last name . I have read in sap help that it says the table T522N is the place. But before using i wanted to can i change or is there any method where i can do.
i have changed the name2 as middle name by going to cmod and changing the text label. Here it dint asked me any access key.
similary for chaning the position of the two fields can i do so please let me know if any body has done this.
    regards
    divya.

    Hi Divya,
You can't change the position of the fields in standard SAP screens - PA30/20.
This would be repair and you need to get access key to change the 2000 screen of module pool MP000200.
T522N is used to change the name format in reports, etc. (Firstname Lastname or Lastname Firstname) It has nothing to do with the field positions in the screen of PA20/30.

  • Change first name/last name convention for individual contacts

Hello. First off, I'm aware of how to set the convention globally under System Preferences. However, what I'm looking for is the ability to set this for individual contacts. This is an issue, because not everybody has an English name, but for those that do, firstname/lastname works better than lastname/firstname -- the reverse is true for those without one.
Basically I just need a way to change this setting for individual contacts. Is there a way?

There's no way to edit the setting individually. However, there's nothing to prevent you from putting a first name in the last name field or vice versa if it suits your needs better.

  • Search Contacts by First Name (Nokia 6124)

We have users with Nokia 6124 with contacts sorted in First Name order. Is there anyway of searching by first name rather than last name?

    Hi Inekar,
I've bought the phone in replacement of my Blackberry. I was gone buy another BB but then had this N97 in my hands and i must say that this phone is amazing.  When i see what this phone can do for our business. Exchange, office applications, pdf, gps, ....  So for me it is a real must to have in business.  To buy this phone as private person to play around is a waste of money.  But of course you're right also that this phone is 100% multimedia.

  • Nokia 8800 contact in first name sequence only?

I'm able to sync my Nokia 8800 with my powerbook, but is the contact order in first name sequence only? Is there any way to arrange it in Last Name basis?
Thanks in advance for your help.

i just noticed that of my 462 contacts, about 90% of them have the first name in the last name box and vice versa. i input each one of the contacts and have synced several times between my iphone, gmail and my 4 mac computers. i have seen that you can sort by first name or last name, but this is not a sorting issue. the first and last names have physically switched locations. i noticed this so i turned off mobile me and it did not sync with my iPhone. i think i will have to just reload the contacts on the one computer but i still don't understand what happened.

  • Mail AND entourage showing contacts in the order last name, first name?

hi, I want to use mail and entourage parallel. mail can display the name in the "correct" order last name, first name. using entourage I cannot find this option. it´s always a mess, sorted by last name, but in the order: first name last name.
Does somebody know the solution how to tell entourage to behave like mail in this matter ?

Templeton's suggestion is best if needing help with Microsoft Entourage. Since I know the answer is "not possible" I can at least steer you toward an AppleScript that will give you a workaround. Have a look here <http://www.barryw.net/weblog/files/category-5.html>.
Further questions about this script should be directed either to its author or to Microsoft's Entourage newsgroup <http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage>.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • How can I get mail to address addressees by their first name, first?

I like it that Mail is integrated with Contacts. But when I type a name in the To: section, it is always shown as last name, first name. How can I get Mail to address my friends as Gary Smith, not Smith Gary??

I don't think whether it's easier or not is really an issue.  The problem is that all of these wonderful technologies are taking away our understanding of how to communicate in writing.  It's not a matter of being lazy and not "wanting" to do it, but rather getting to a point where many people "can't" do it.
I certainly wasn't pointing any fingers.  I use a calculator (or computer if I happen to be on one at the time) to do the most basic math calculations.  I can be out to lunch with co-workers and we have to pull out a calculator to split a bill 4 ways.  I went through school at a time when calculators were not permitted.  So, at one time, I could have easily done all of that stuff in my head.  So far as math goes, my mind has turned to mush a long time ago.  I doubt I could work my way through a long division problem at this point... even if I sat there and really tried.
Computers were not generally consumer items when I was growing up.  So I didn't grow up in a world with spell checking.  I have certainly grown to use it though and I'm sure my ability to spell properly has diminished somewhat because of it.  I tend to be less careful when typing something out.  If I'm not sure of the spelling on something, I just let my computer either fix it or give me a suggestion for the corrected spelling.  Fortunately, I grew up having to rely on my own ability to spell, so with that foundation, I tend to do fairly well when it comes to spelling.
We're at a point now where systems can correct grammar and sentence structure.  I think all of these are great tools to help us out, but they shouldn't be used to take the place of actually knowing how to do things.  Having said that, I'm fairly sure that is exactly what will happen.  Just as today, I rely almost entirely on some form of electronics for everyday math, I'm sure people growing up today with expert systems able to correct everything will rely on those equally.

  • Possible to use a field code first name in mail?

    Hi
I want to sent a mail to my contacts. And I like to start the mail with Hello <first name of the contact>,
Is it possible to do that in this mail software?
    Kind regards,
    Rene

You can achieve your requirement through partner determination for sales doc header.
To Create Sales Personnel (if you are not using HR module for Sales Personal) in SAP, use Tcode VPE1.
You have to Maintain Partner Determination in SPRO:
IMG - SD - Basic Functions - Partner Determination - Set up Partner Determination
As you can set it up in Sales Order (say, At Header),
Click: -Set up Partner Determination for Sales Document Header
Maintain a Partner Determination procedure ZIN - Inquiry Order.(copy TA - Standard Order)
Make PE-Sales employee as mandatory in ZIN - PE-Sales employee in Partner Function Procedure in Partner Determination procedure.
Now, From Left-hand side tree, click on:
    Partner determination procedure assignment.
Here assign ZIN to your Sales Doc type (Say, IN - Inquiry).
    Again from Left-hand tree, select
    Account groups - Function Assignment
Here, Link all Customer Acct Grps to PE/ VE
Now in Sales Order (T. Code: VA11/ 12), to include Sales Employee:
    Goto --> Header --> Partner
here, in Column Partner. Function: Select VE/ PE as defined for Sales Employee.
    Hope this can assist you.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Why does the "Computer Name" sometimes change?

Not a big deal, just curious, why does the "computer name" sometimes change?
The name will be the same, but it will add a number....2,3,4...I always change it back so it doesn't have a numeric value next to it, but just wondering why it happens.
                                            Thanks.

Can also occur after your computer is put to sleep and then wakes back up or after your computer is force quit and immediately restarted. Sometimes the router 'believes' the computer is still connected when it actually isn't. When that computer re-establishes a connection the router 'tells' the computer that a computer with that name already exists so it has to change its name. By default a computer running MacOS adds a number (or increments its number) when this happens.

  • Change Mail COntacts First Name Last Name order

When opening contacts from Mail the contact names are listed and sorted by First name. How do I change this to listing and sorting my last name first?

I believe it honors the preferences in Address book. Try Opening Address book and going to Address Book > Preferences > General Tab > Select Name order and sort by.
