Mail: sound on spam

Having a little argument with Mail over here, since Tiger actually and I just wondered if there is any way to fix it.
When I receive mail from university they automatically run it through spamassasin and assign a few extra headers for which I have configured a rule in Mail to send those straight to the Junk Mail folder (don't want to delete them immediately in case the filter is wrong).
Only problem with this is, Mail sounds its new mail sound before applying those rules and hence it plings every time I receive spam too which is quite annoying as I go and check my Mail to find nothing useful.
I was wondering if there's a way to tell Mail to keep quiet until all the rules have applied and if then there is an unread message in one of the inboxes (not the Junk Mail folder) to then sound the alarm.

Unfortunately, that doesn't do the trick, seems to be something in Mail's internals...

  • How can I get my e-mail sounds back?

Until about a week ago, I heard a sound when new mail arrived and a nice swish when mail went out. Now silence! I tried Sound in System Preferences -- but no help there. Please advise. Thanks!

    Hi Norman --

You wrote that you "tried system preferences," but did you also check the mail application's own preferences?
With Mail open, click on the "Mail" menu in the upper left-hand corner, select "preferences," select the "general" tab and make sure that you've selected the "new mail sound" in the drop down menu for your "new mail sound" and have checked the box next to where it says "play sounds for other mail actions."
If all of the above check out, you should also re-check that the volume in System Preferences > Sound > Output is adjusted sufficiently high.

Try disabling the IDLE switch in the account's Advanced preference panel.

  • How do I add and remove custom mail sounds

I have a custom mail sound that I would like to remove from Apple mail. I have another sound that I would like to add to mail.
There was a web site that explained how to do this for 10.4 but I cannot find a procedure for doing it with 10.5.

I'm wondering if Apple changed how these sounds are done from 10.4 to 10.5
I actually replaced one custom sound with the very same custom sound, this seems to have solved my problem.
Thank you for taking the time to help me.

  • Changing New Mail Sound

I have an iPhone 4 (AT&T) running iOS 6.0.1. My "New Mail" sound persists in being Tri-tone, despile all my efforts to silence it or change it to another sound.
I have tried to reset it using Settings>Sounds as well as Settings>Notifications>Mail without success. I have restarted many times, and done a complete reset/restore once, all without success. The settings appear to be correct, but the loud Tri-tone sound still persists.
    Any suggestions?

I have done a complete backup and restore (twice), as well as a "Reset all Settings".   Neither solved the problem.  I have not yet done a "Restore as new iPhone" because of all the effort that would entail, and because I have become doubtful that any of these things will help.
I may just have to live with the problem.  I was hoping that I had just overlooked a simple setting somewhere.
    Thanks for your help!

  • How can I get Mail sounds to turn off for junk and other non-Inbox new mail?

This week my Mail sound started going off for all types, incessantly, including receipt of the much Junk filtered out of the Inbox into Junk.  Formerly I received alert sounds only for new Inbox mail.  I have unchecked the "Play sounds for other actions" in Mail Preferences which does no good.  Any suggestions will be welcomed.  Thanks.

Did you install any software which includes or is a notification program such as Growl? Those may override any options you've set in the Preferences.

  • Incoming mail sound does not sound- is activated in preferences

Started after taking headphone jack out of back of Mac. iTunes plays, can hear sounds from Second Life, MSN Messenger, but incoming/outgoing sounds in Mail and iChat are gone. Activated/enabled in preferences in each app but don't play for incoming mail/im's. What to do, what to do?
    Thanks in advance.

The same thing is going on with my mail sounds and my Trash sounds.
Instead of restarting - try to Relaunch the finder first.

  • How do I get Mail Sounds back?

    Good Morning,
I seem to have lost my mail sounds and I've tried everything. Settings in Preferences are all on set but no no sounds. It actually seems like a system thing cause the trash on desktop lost it's sound to now that I think of it.
    Is there a known conflict???
Certainly not the end of the world for me but I like my new mail sound, the airplane sound when sending and the trash emptying sound!!
    thanks,
    A Brigsy

    Hi A.Brigsy,
I have the same problem, since upgrading to 10.4, after loading, I performed a software upgrade, to 10.4.8. I thought the last upgrade would get my sounds back. I found out, if I switch from external to built in speakers, and click on the sounds, until I hear the sounds, then, switch to external, I was ok for that session, I would have to do it each time I logged in. If I find a solution, I will let you know.

  • E Mail Forms and Spam Bots

I have created a form and using a PHP script to forward the
form results to an e mail account. How protected is this from
harvesting the e mail address by spam bots? If this is not the best
way to go, any suggestions on a better method. I'm familiar with
captcha but would prefer not to have to use this.
    thnx
    Fred

If the email address is ONLY mentioned in the PHP script,
    it's completely
    secure.

  • Mail sound changed by itself; can't get previous one back

My "New mail" sound has always been the "incoming jet" sound I suppose we're all familiar with. Today, for no reason I can discern, it changed to something resembling a harp. (I've neither seen nor installed any Apple 10.5.6 updates today.)
Checking Mail's Preferences, I found it's called, apparently, "New Mail Sound." None of the ones shown in the list (Basso - Tink) sound like the harp. Worse, none sound like the jet, which I've always liked -- it seems to have vanished. When I check my home directory's Library/Sounds folder, it's empty.
Does anyone have an idea where my jet sound has gone? Or why this harp-like sound has the rather non-descriptive name "New Mail Sound" and is given a privileged place in the selections rather than appearing in the list?

Interestingly, my incoming mail sound has always been a rather anemic ding sort of sound. The Jet sound that you speak of has been, and after a Leopard install, still is, my Outgoing mail sound. This kind of makes sense, in that the Jet sound indicates that my outgoing mail has been sent and is winging it's way to the recipient. What is your Sent/Outgoing mail sound?
It kind of sounds like something in Mail has gone wonky. Somewhere on the Apple site, you can find and download mail. I was there just the other day trying to solve the one little Mail fluke I came upon when loading Leopard, which was that none of the sounds will work without the "play user interface sound effects" box checked in System Preferences/sound/sound effects. I didn't have to have that checked under Tiger, which was fine as I don't like the dippy trash empty sound Etc that those effects provide. Maybe a fresh Mail download will help you.
Other than that, about all I can suggest is running permissions, doing a shut down/restart, zapping the pram and maybe running Disc Warrior if you have it.
    Good luck ~

  • New mail sounds iphone5 not working

Doesn anyone know why the sounds for New Mail do not work?  Only vibrate works. Thanks.

For some strange reason, my mail sounds are not
operating. I have a certain sound selected to
announce incoming mail, but as of today, it doesn't
ring. Nor do I get my "No Mail" sound. When I go to
System preferences>Sound, none of the sounds play
when I click them. Other sounds (iTunes, voices,
    etc.) work OK.
Does anyone have an idea as to how to fix this? Maybe
    deleting mail .plists?
    Thanks.
If the sounds don't play in the Sound Preference pane then deleting mail.plist won't matter.
Check in /System/Library/Sounds. Do the .aiff files open and play in QT when you double-click them there? If not you'll need to run repair disk from disk utility and if they still don't work after that you'll want to see if you can replace them.
If they do work, then try pulling the following to the desktop and logging out and back in:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
~/Library/Preferences/By Host/com.apple.systempreferences.XXX.plist (where XXX is a random string)

  • Ghost Email, new mail sound and no mail, quite often

I have a two part question: I get the new mail sound with the activity next to a mail box but quite often no mail. Sometimes I'll check online to see mail which I haven't gotten on my computer. I play with the Junk Mail settings, which I do not use. I have several RULES which I will turn off just for a test. None of this seems to matter

It seems my computer is showing the number of emails recieved on the server but not forwarding them, until I go to the web site. I do Rebuild the mailbox and usually I'll get one or two I looked at

  • New mail sound suddenly stopped working

I assigned a 'new mail sound' (wav file) and for no apparent reason suddenly stopped working. Anyone else experienced this ?

This sometimes happens to me too, as well as my alerts with iChat. I have to restart the computer and that fixes it for me. Hope that is the case with you as well.
