Mail: spinning ball lock-up?

I just upgraded to Tiger. Now when I attempt to open mail on my G4 Titanium laptop, I get the forever spinning ball requiring force quit. Other apps seem to work fine, but a reinstall still failed to fix the mail program. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot for your tip (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1560767#1560767)
I duplicated my mail folder and put the copy on the desktop, then I removed the envelop index from the original mail file and put it also on the desktop.
When I launched mail afterwards it invited me to re-index my mailboxes (which was quite fast). Now mail opens normally and I do not seem to have lost any of may emails, BUT (because there is always a but) I am now facing some other problems while sending emails / shutting down mail.
There must be a deeper problem (Virus ?) don't you think ?

when I open Mail, I get a alert that my To Do list has 2 items that don't match what is on my .MAC account. No matter what I select ( keep computer or use .MAC To Do's) I get the spinning death Ball. Tried lots of things short of reinstalling to no avail. Can't delete the To Do's.
I can't use Mail once the alert occurs. Answers?

Correct, it is an Adobe icon. The ball spun for 36 hours and just stopped. Then I could see it was an Adobe thing, and I was able to quit.
Problem over, thanks for the assist

  • Spinning Ball in IMovie HD 6

NEED HELP: iMovie HD 6, spinning ball locks my system up. I’m using iMac G5 with 2 GB of ram and 250 GB on hard drive and latest OSX. I’ve read and tried all of the advice on the user forum, and spoken too many times to Apple tech without any success.
Tried Disk Utility from Tiger; changed Energy saver in preferences so HD disk will not sleep when possible; tried Spotlight solution; and ran TechTool 4 Pro and have struck out on all these suggestions.
The spinning ball lasts for a long time and eventually I have to force quit. At this point, I’m close to giving up on iMovie. Anyone out there with any new recommendations. Thanks in advance.
    billct

I too get this spinning ball but only when importing video clips into Imovie. I just force quit and reopen and the video clip shows up in the trash (in perfectly fine condition). I then drag it back to my movie clip section, save the movie and all is well. An annoying glitch but it works. What are you doing when the spinning ball occurs? Hope this helps!

  • I have an iMac with Mavericks that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls" from particularly Mail, Google Chrome, and Word. I took it to the Apple store and it was fast there, at home slow. I have been having internet speed issues, could it be that?

I have a pretty new iMac with LOTS of storage (about 4TB with externals) that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls of death" from time to time in almost any program that I might have open, but particularly MacMail, Google Chrome browsers, and Word. I took it to the Apple store to be checked out and it was really fast with no issues there. I brought it home and it was better at first but then it started happening again.
I have been having a lot of issues with Time Warner where my download speeds will dip really low, and all I can think of is that MacMail goes and tries to check for email and can't get out to the internet and it locks all the other resources up while it is doing it. It will also take a REALLY long time to even let you look at mail. The folder size is over 13GB (down from 22GB that I just cleared out from - I have a lot of MP3s etc in there) and I will try to get this down to under 10GB which might help, and the mail is on an external drive. I have been told that Verizon is not a shared network but a direct connection to their server, and if I can't fix this then I will try switching to them. If anyone has any direct knowledge on this stuff, I am all ears.

We need to know more about your system, please download EtreCheck and run the report and please post it on your next reply. Then we can see how your system is configured, what apps are on it and look for anything obvious. We will look forward to seeing your report.

  • Mail and the spinning ball

Since updating to 10.5.7 I keep getting the spinning ball on opening Mail. And also getting warning sign that syncserver is not connecting. tried trashing pref and repairing permissions but still getting the spinning ball. Anyone else getting the same problem?

I don't get the spinning ball, but I get the incoming mail symbol that spins and spins. I don't understand it as the settings are all the same on my computer and my husband's computer but he has had absoultely NO problems with his mail. My mail goes OUT and one or two pieces of mail come in, then it just spins and then my computer won't shut down unless I manually turn it off because mail has locked it up somehow. Other applications continue to work, but I can't do a force quit on mail...it just doesn't work. My husband put Thunderbird on my computer he was so frustrated with trying to fix the darn problem, but I hate Thunderbird!!! HELP

  • I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months.  Initially, I did not have any problems.  Now I have a problem with Yahoo Mail.  I can open my account, but when I try to get at my mail, 2 out of 3 times I get the spinning ball that never stops.  Now what?

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail.  I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it.  Other times, I run into the same problem.  Any suggestions?

My new yahoo account nestles comfortably in iCloud on the mine iPad.
No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do.

I have 3 mail accounts in apple mail. One of them has had the spinning ball going for several days and I cannot receive mail in this account or delete messages etc. For some  reason, I CAN send mail on Apple mail using this account, although it takes several minutes. I can receive mail in this account on my iPad and by signing into aol on safari and internet explorer on my office PC. It's obviously a glitch in Apple's Mail. I've deleted this account and reopened it in Mail on my Mac Pro with no difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this E amil account is major to my business.

sounds like a corrupt database or index
the glitch is your home folder and mail folder, esp look at syncservices
I'd post in the mail or Lion forum where you will find similar issues being discussed.

  • Spinning Ball using Mail in Lion -  Can I strip all?

I've read dozens of threads on the Spinning Ball Syndrome with Lion and Mail. I've tried all of the suggestions and still no luck.

  • Spinning ball in Mail

Since updating to 10.8, on waking, Mail shows a spinning ball until all the accounts are synched and all mail has come in. I'm not the only one seeing the new "feature", but no one knows how to avoid it. This never happened in 10.6 or 10.7. Is there a known fix? I've seen a suggestion to trash some plist file, but it was not one that was on my machine.

Well, WD Memo Agent would not be the problem, whatever that is. I suspect it's something for Microsoft Word. The only update from Apple for 10.4.11 was a Security Update, and it had nothing to do with Mail. But try this:
If you're using a POP mail account, go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
Restart Mail and wait for it to rebuild the index, and see if it will launch correctly. If not:
    Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Preferences and remove the com.apple.mail.plist file.
Restart Mail and setup your account(s) again. Mail will find your existing mailboxes automatically and you can then see if it works properly.
If Mail crashes, copy and paste the crash report into your reply.

  • Spinning ball in mail/ with i photo

Was in Apple Mail and went to attach a photo from i photo. When I went to attach> at the application drop down > i photo> the spinning ball just kept spinning and I could not open it. There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

The settings seems to be correct...As you were able to ping the ip 192.168.1.2,it should open the setup page..Try to disable the firewall,ant-virus and other security software if any and then,try...Also try to adjust the browser settings on the computer... Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...Now try..
It should work now...If not then, you have to reset the router and need to reconfigure it again..

  • Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally?

I hope I'm submitting this properly, I apologize if this irritates anyone because of improper etiquette. Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally? This is a condition which seemed to start just recently and abruptly. These applications reside on, and are launched from the startup drive, not from a network drive. Also, we have a NAS drive on the LAN that we connect to that also takes a minute or two to mount, when it used to (before this problem) mount on the desktop in a matter of about 5 seconds. We have three identical Mac Pros on the LAN, and they all have this problem when launching and using the above mentioned applications. When I physically unplug the network cable from the Mac, all applications launch instantly and function normally. I know very little about networks, so I can't begin to test or change any setting pertaining to our network - if that is where the problem lies. The only recent change to our network situation is that we lost or our internet and phone service due to massive flooding here in Minot, North Dakota (our ISP tells us the communication lines are under water and shorting out). But shouldn't our LAN still function even though we have lost our connection to the outside world? Thanks so much, in advance, for helping me solve this problem. Sheldon.

    Hi there.
A slow LAN can have many things so its going slow.
    1) is your lan 1gbit speed? (full duplex)
    2) are the macs also 1Gbit speed? (full duplex)
    3) does your nas has a firewall? (so you can see what the mac asking there)
    4) on the macs is the firewall on? (does the programms can pass the fw?)
    5) how big is the nas and how many files/dirctorys are on the nas? (big folders speeds down )
many questions, but sometimes there is a solution.
    regards tim
