Mail stops receiving mail and then won't quit

Since I upgraded to Leopard I have been force quitting Mail. It seems to be associated with .Mac. I open up the activities window and there is always some e-mail stuck receiving in there. When this happens, no more mail is received and the application won't quit. I notice that it also happens if I go to sleep or I switch users.
I have disabled all rules.
I have emptied all mailboxes.
I turned off growl notifications.
I have enough space on .Mac.
I have extended the check mail time.
Honestly, it is pretty annoying. Anyone having this issue?

do you have any other plugin or input manager or transfer of data from Mail to something else running with mail by any chance?
If yes, then you may want to disable and try again.
If no, then have you tried deleting and re-creating your .mac account and see if you still have the same issue?
If that does not solve it, have you tried logging in with a different user account onto your computer, and then setting up your .mac account in Mail and trying to send. If you get the same issues then it may hint at app/system related issues, if you send/receive without an issue then it might be a user specific issue.
If user specific issue I would repair permissions - applications>utilities>disk utility and repair permissions.
hope this helps

  • Mail stops receiving messages and then stops responding

I have been using mail for over a year now with no major issues, until now. When I open mail it appears to open fine, and then it automatically starts taking the accounts online. The progress bar shows that there are 200+ messages to receive, and it shows the data rate at about 100ish kb/sec. Once it hits around 60 "received messages" of the 200+ the data rate consistently starts dropping until goes to 0 kb/sec and I can no longer take any accounts on line or even quit mail. The program responds reasonably well, but when I select "quit mail" the window will disappear, but the program will not quit. The only way I can stop it is to force quit. The accounts I use are pop3 and gmail accounts. I thought that maybe it was one account that was messing me up so I removed the accounts systematically and none of them are working properly. I also have been using wireless, so I connected via ethernet, but the issue persists. Any help is appreciated.

Exact same problem here. I tried moving the index file to the desktop and reopening mail. It rebuilds fine but then this problem starts again. It is only with one account, a pop3 account. Gmail works fine. I've deleted all mail in that account via webmail. It still hangs even though there are 0 mails to receive. The indicator shows it is still trying - and that will go on forever. Quitting just like movie_man describes.
Disabling that account solves the problem - but reenabling it brings it back.
I have the accounts sync'd with iPod touch and another home Mac. It has worked fine for years and then this, suddenly.

  • Safari freezes and then won't quit

For a few days now I would go into safari and after looking at maybe 5 web pages I normally look at it would stop loading all together. Then when I would try to quit safari it would quit, but it would still show up in the tool bar as still running, and when I try to force quit it would quit and then show up again as still running, but I cna't load up any web pages. I go to Internet Explorer and it would run fine, and then start doing the same thing. Any tips or ideas. I'm running on OS X 10.3.9 and using safari 1.3.1

I have a similar problem. When using my browser (either Netscape or Safari), it will occasionally lose the ability to load a URL (Netscapes says "Resolving.....", Safari says "Contacting...."). Sometimes I can quit the browser, sometimes I can't. If I can quit it, it will not reload (the dock icon just bounces). I can use already opened applications but cannot open new ones. The "Restart" and "Shut Down" options under the Apple menu do not work. I have to do a "hard shut down" (push and hold the power button) and then power up again.
When I installed OS X 10.4, I upgraded. I ran Tech Tool prior to upgrading. I do not use Norton.

  • My mail has stopped receiving anything and is saying the IMAP server username and password is wrong but I haven't logged out or changed anything?

My mail (hotmail) has stopped receiving emails and keeps saying the IMAX server username and password is wrong when I haven't changed anything?

    Hello ,Marshyy96
That is not good, lets see if we can get your email back up and running again. Take a look at the article below to go over the settings to just make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. You may end up needing to remove the email account and add it back in.

  • Hi, my mail won't open from my dock on my mac and it won't quit so I can't restart. Anyone help?

Hi, my mail won't open from my dock on my mac and it won't quit so I can't restart. Anyone help?

    Hello ward886,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like Mail is unresponsive, and you are unable to access it or restart your system.  In a situation like this, I recommend force quitting Mail and restarting your computer.
Use one of the following methods to force Mail to quit:
Using the Force Quit feature of OS X makes an application close, even when it is not responsive.
Important: Normally you should not need to force quit an app to close it. When an app is forced to quit, any unsaved changes to open documents are not saved, so try these methods to normally close the app first:
Choose Quit from the app menu. For example, in Safari, choose Safari > Quit Safari.
Choose Quit by right-clicking or control-clicking on an app's icon in the Dock.
If your app does not close using the steps above, use any of these steps to force the app to quit:
Switch to another app, such as the Finder, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.
Press Command-Option-Esc, then select the unresponsive app from the Force Quit window that appears, and click Force Quit.
Hold down the Control and Option keys on your keyboard, and click the icon of the unresponsive app in the Dock. Select Force Quit from the menu that appears.
Open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder or the Spotlight menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Activity monitor window. Choose Quit Process from the View menu, or click the Force Quit button in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window.
If you cannot switch from the unresponsive app, press Command-Option-Shift-Esc for three seconds to force it to quit. This key combination tells OS X to force quit the frontmost app.

Why I can't change on the settings ,I cloud ,advanced l, mail and then email address there I can't change ? Help please?

You can't change that address by design, but Apple allows you to create another two addresses and use instead they call those aliases and you can create and use those different for different people with the same account. Instructions here

  • BB Curve 8900 - randomly stops receiving emails and requires battery pull

I'm a newb to BB and this forum has helped a lot but my BB Curve 8900 randomly stops receiving emails about every 2 days and requires a battery pull to correct.
When it stops receiving emails and I go to the browser, it is also unable to connect. I basically lose all connection to data. I can receive calls and sms.
Turning unit off and on does not help.
I need to do a battery pull. Then starts working fine right away.
    I'm with Rogers in Canada
Is there a fix for this? Could I possibly have a bad phone? Battery pull once is a while is fine but to need to do that every 2 days is not.

Something similar happens to me.  I have to keep resending the service books and then it works fine, try this, at least it will stop you keep doing a hard reset.  I have read somewhere else that this can be influenced by having your phone to turn off at night etc.  So for now I have turned this feature off.  I can actually receive emails via wifi and the failure is only on GPRS.  It sounds a bit strange but I am also becoming convinced that it only occurs when I leave home, go somewhere else and then come back.
Read this below.  I did do all this but it hasnt worked for me, may help you though

  • IPhone 4 iOS 5.0.1 stops receiving calls and text messages

    Hi all,
My iPhone 4 (iOS 5.0.1) suddenly stopped receiving calls and text messages. However, I'm still able to send them.
The workaround for fixing this issue is to make an hard reset to the iPhone.
This only occured with 5.0.1 version. It's very annoying because I'm not able to know if it's working or not (I can only suppose that it's not working when I'm a long period without receiving calls/messages)
Do you know how to solve this ?
    Thanks in advance!

First, who really cares what you do?  I certainly don't, and I doubt the vast majority of users on this forum don't either.  Ridiculous statements like that just make you look stupid.
Second, this is a user to user technical support forum.  I saw a lot of whine here, not a question.  What is your technical support question?

  • Bluetooth stops working now and then

My bluetooth stops working now and then. Let's say I haven't used bluetooth for a few hours and I want to sync my mobile phone. I try, but it's unable to connect. If I then try to turn off Bluetooth, I'm unable to turn it back on. In Bluetooth preferences, the status will be 'Off' and the 'Turn Bluetooth On' button is greyed out. The only way to get Bluetooth working again, is to restart OS X.
    Help!

    1. Boot from your system CD, run Disk First Aid and repair your permissions.
    2. Then try running it with Airport turned off.
    3. Reinstall the original RAM and run it that way for awhile.

You got your answers in this thread here and you marked it as correct.

When you get to the email preferences page to make the changes, did you click on "Save" at the bottom of that page to lock in the changes that you made?
