Mail stops receiving messages

I'm having an odd problem with Mail in Mavericks that I haven't experienced in earlier releases of OS X.
On occasion, every few days, Mail will stop polling for new messages. I'll discover new messages have arrived by glancing at my iPhone and noticing that I may have several messages from several different mail servers all waiting for me. I'll then go back to OS X Mail and click the Get New Mail Messages button and suddenly they all show up.
These messages had been queued up on the two different IMAP servers, including iCloud, hours earlier but Mail simply didn't receive them.
I have tried chaning the "Check for new messages" preferences to Every Minute, instead of Automaticatically, but that hasn't helped.
I noticed that Use IDLE is checked by default for both IMAP servers. Is that the problem?
Thanks for any advice,
George

Exact same problem here. I tried moving the index file to the desktop and reopening mail. It rebuilds fine but then this problem starts again. It is only with one account, a pop3 account. Gmail works fine. I've deleted all mail in that account via webmail. It still hangs even though there are 0 mails to receive. The indicator shows it is still trying - and that will go on forever. Quitting just like movie_man describes.
Disabling that account solves the problem - but reenabling it brings it back.
I have the accounts sync'd with iPod touch and another home Mac. It has worked fine for years and then this, suddenly.

  • Mail stops receiving messages after a period of time

Every since installing Mavericks my Mail app stops receiving messages after a period of time. I know because I get the email on my phone, but I try to grab them in Mail and nothing. If I restart Mail then they come through.
I'm using Gmail as my email provider. Is anyone else suffering with this? Is there a work around?

Workaround or not, this is an annoyance, and that's a nice way of putting it. Coming from Mountain Lion, when Mail was working flawlessly, having to deal with this issue is just plain ridiculous. What happened to the Mail application? I don't understand how Apple could screw this up to badly.
Every time I restart or reset the connection to the servers, the Mail app is downloading thousands of messages (I can see the display on the bottom-left). I have no idea what it's doing or why, for that matter. If Apple doesn't fix this soon, I will seriously be forced to look for an alternative, which saddens me greatly. I really like Mail, but if it cannot reliably get my mail simply because I've left it open too long, or hidden it behind another window, I will stop using it.
What's worse is that I've had similar issues with other applications like iPhoto and iTunes. Whatever is happening to Mail is probably not just application-specific. It's probably OS-specific. I hope Apple is working on it and that we will see a major update to Mavericks soon. All I know is that, right now, I'm seriously regretting upgrading to Mavericks.

  • Mail stops receiving messages and then stops responding

I have been using mail for over a year now with no major issues, until now. When I open mail it appears to open fine, and then it automatically starts taking the accounts online. The progress bar shows that there are 200+ messages to receive, and it shows the data rate at about 100ish kb/sec. Once it hits around 60 "received messages" of the 200+ the data rate consistently starts dropping until goes to 0 kb/sec and I can no longer take any accounts on line or even quit mail. The program responds reasonably well, but when I select "quit mail" the window will disappear, but the program will not quit. The only way I can stop it is to force quit. The accounts I use are pop3 and gmail accounts. I thought that maybe it was one account that was messing me up so I removed the accounts systematically and none of them are working properly. I also have been using wireless, so I connected via ethernet, but the issue persists. Any help is appreciated.

  • Durable Subscriber Stops Receiving Messages

We have a durable subscriber using an asynchronous listener that randomly stops receiving messages. After the application is restarted, messages delivery is re-activated. When the durable subscriber is in this state (where messages are not being delivered), the JMX Mbean "isActive" attributes is true. There are other durable subscribers on this same destination that receive messages as expected.
Has anyone observed this behavior for a durable subscription?

What is the MQ version shown at beginning of the broker log ? Could you please give more description of your application and what the subscriber clients do ?

I Want to stop receiving messages on my Nokia 1661 So no one can send me any kind of messages (Text.SMS.Multimedia)
    Please Help!!!!!

I don't think that is possible, if it is you have a better chance of getting it done via your service provider than directly on your phone. Do you by any chance no any other mobile device that can do this?

It happened a mail 78. So I deleted the corresponding mail from the server and another similar looking one as well. Now the problem happened downloaden mail 76, which of course was a different mail than the one which caused the error at first. I then created a new account in mail.app which downloads from the same mail account and the problem happens there as well.
    It is a POP account.
I then tested what's happening if I create a new user in Mac OS X and use Mail.app in the new account. This works.
So the problem is limited to my user account and there to all mail accounts going to the same POP server/user.
Do you have any ideas what could cause this behaviour and how I can solve it?
    Bye

Welcome to the forums Oliver... good work at narrowing the problem down so far!
Try dragging this file to the Desktop and reboot...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Might also pay to clean caches, I use Applejack, but there are many. The log makes me think cache especially.

  • Mail (Lion) & Exchange 2007, periodically stops receiving messages, does no hang

As the title says, we are having this issue.  I saw another post last year about Exchange 2010 hanging, and an old certificate caused the issue.  Our network admin is looking into that.
We are not experiencing any hangs.  Mail "works" fine.  We have multiple accounts setup (all Exchange) and 2 of the 3 are sending and receiving fine.  The last mailbox, the actual use account, will stop receiving.  There are no errors or indicators.  Typically someone will call and ask why she isn't responding.  She closes Mail and reopens and the emails come in.  Sometimes it's once a day, sometimes more.  I've removed the Exchange account and added it back in and it helped, but didn't resolve the issue.
    Any thoughts?

After having the same error ("opening mailbox - Requesting latest information" - hang) and fighting for months on my Mac (Lion) to solve it, including writing angry bug reports to Apple - I think I finally found the source of the problem:
There was an old (invalid) certificate installed in Exchange (2007, in my case), enabled for SMTP.
Nobody seems to care about this - including Snow Leopard Mail, Outlook and all iOS devices - but Lion Mail cared, and just stuck. Typically after some time - maybe sleep/wake or just a couple of hours - Mail was stuck and did not receive any new mails anymore, until I Force Quit it.
I got the hint from another forum (somebody suggested changing the properties in the locally installed certificates in Lion - but this was not the solution) and after seeing the question popping up once in Mail Preferences (do you want to trust this (old) certificate).
After removing the old certificate from Exchange (good luck with this admin user interface - no wonder we did not notice it) - everything works ok for me, already a day without any hangs.
Hope it helps! (Let us know the outcome...)

  • Mail won't quite without "force quite" , Mail stops receiving emails after a while, not happy about MAIL's performance!!!! :(

I have massive problems with Mail.
I use mail at work and have 3 accounts running
    1. Mac. mail account
    2. Gmail mail account
    3. Exchange Server
I have quite a few folders in my accounts where I have to archive my emails to.
Often very often or lets say annoyingly too often mail stops working.
    - stops receiving emails
    - emails I have put away in folders disapear in my inbox again
    - if I try to quite Mail it won't I have to force it and then when I open it again all my emails I was working on open again even so I have sent them already. Also all the emails I have folded away are back in my inbox WHAT A WAIST OF TIME!!
I AM VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT MAILS PERFORMANCE AT THE MOMENT! IT SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK!
Does anyone have the same problems and more importantly does anyone has a solution to this problem other then switching to Outlook???
    Thank you!
    Oliver

I have the "stops receiving mail" problem with Exchange.  Sometimes I can open up the Activty window in Mail and stop  the stuck processes. Other times I have to close then reopen Mail.  I usually do the latter. A fix would be nice.
I wonder if your other problems are related to this. The actual process of relocating your messages is maybe queued up behind one of the stuck processes. Just guessing. I have not had that problem.

  • Mail Stops receiving mail after phone in standby for a while.

We are currently running Exchange 2003 SP2. We have direct push enabled on our server.
I have setup an iphone to use one of our exchange account and mail is received straight away on the phone. However once the phone has been on standby for a while (Cant give exact time) mail stops coming through on the phone. As soon as you bring the phone out of standby and do something on the phone the missing mails come through. We know there is nothing wrong with our server as we have a WM6 device that constantly receives the same mail.
    Anyone else had same issues?
    Settings on phone are :
    iPhone 3G
    2.0 (5A347)
    Wifi is disabled
    Push is enabled
    3g is enabled

We upgraded to Exchange 2007 and upgraded phones to Latest OS and problem seems to have gone.

  • Mail can receive messages but cannot send them

I can receive messages in Mail but suddenly I cannot send them.
I just had my hard drive replaced. Runing 10.7.2.
I can send message using my iPad and the same account.

Check all your server setting on that account for the correct username and password, port number and the server address (POP/imap.Mail.XXX.com/net).
This is the only reason mail will not be sent. Incorrect settings on the account.
It may be best to delete the account and recreate it. that way you aren't skipping over the incorrect setting as we humans often do.
Just like I didn't type a capitol T on That in the above sentence. Although I caught that one.

  • Mail not receiving messages

I just updated to Yosemite.  My Mail account can send messages but not received messages.  I tried creating a new account, but same result as my old account.  My wife has a Mail account identical to mine, except for her E-Mail address, and she sends and receives okay.  We have the same domain; just hers is [email protected]  Mine is [email protected]  The Connection Doctor successfully connects to both the incoming and outgoing mail servers.  The Activity Window shows:
          "[Don] Fetching new mail
         Preparing to retrieve messages...
for a long time and nothing else.
I did find the following messages in the System Log:
    11/08/2014 3:33:09.074 PM    Mail[393]    -[MFPOPConnection fetchMessages:totalBytes:] failed: Error Domain=MCMailErrorDomain Code=1029 "The attempt to send data to the server “(null)” failed." UserInfo=0x608000650b00 {NSLocalizedDescription=The attempt to send data to the server “(null)” failed.}
Also I noticed in Mail is the menu Menu Bar>Mailbox>Get New Mail>Don is disabled, but Menu Bar>Mailbox>Get New Mail>Glenda is enabled.  Both accounts are shown being online.
Finally, I tried my account on my wife's MacBook Pro and my mail was received okay.  So it has to be something on my MacPro.
I've spent 2 days trying to resolve this issue without success, but I'm at a loss.  Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Don

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to search for the name of the mail server you're having trouble with. Double-click one of the items and check the box marked Show password in the inspector window. You'll be prompted for your keychain password to confirm. Make a note of the user name and password. Then delete every "Internet Password" item in the search results. Quit Keychain Access.
Quit and relaunch Mail. You'll be prompted for the account user name and password. Enter the information you noted earlier and check the box to save it in the Keychain.

  • Why has Mail stopped downloading messages from the web-mail server

I have several e-mail accounts that have all worked well until recently when one (tesco.net) has stopped downloading messages. I can send mail from the account ok and can see the unopened mail on the web server. I have not changed the settings and the Doctor comes up with all buttons green confirming internet connection to server. I phoned Tesco support but they say they cannot see a problem. Any advice anyone?

This is the total readout from Connection Doctor, I'm only concerned with the Tesco.net account.

  • My apple mail stopped receiving emails from my google apps account

I have been using apple mail service for all my email accounts, for some reason My google apps account with my own domain stopped receiving emails, I can send but I cant receive them.   Please Help

    Gmail send but not receive...
Here are two steps that have come in handy in related situations
    1) login to gmail on your computer or device via a web browser
    2) once logged in successfully, go to this URL to unlock:

  • Mail stopped receiving emails; saves all sent emails as drafts

    Two issues:
    1.  Suddenly Mail has stopped receiving emails (just started yesterday). I can send with no difficulty, and retrieve emails online through my browser, but not through Mail.
    2.  Each email I send is now saved as a Draft, even though it has been sent.
Anyone else having these problem? And know how to fix it?
    Thanks

For the Drafts issue, access your e-mail via a browser, and check to see if there is a setting to store draft on the server. If it is an IMAP account, go to Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors and un-check Store drafts on server.
