Mail stops talking to POP server and deletes inbox contents

Mail has just started playing up: first by refusing to talk to (download from) my pop server (onetel) and then by deleting all the messages in my inbox. The connection doctor says everything is ok and even 'get info' will list messages on the pop server. Entourage also works fine too. However perhaps most annoyingly, many of the messages started saying The message from xxx concerning “yyy” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it. I have tgried a number of things ( eg rebuild and synchronise) which have perhaps resulted in a load of stuff being deleted.
Any suggestions as to what has happened and how to fix it? Any clues on how to retrieve the lost emails would be especially welcome!

In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail and find your
one or more POP account folders. Control-click on
each such POP folder, and choose Get Info -- what
size is reported? Open the POP folder, and find the
INBOX.mbox folder -- open it and report the files and
folder within, without listing the files in the
Messages folder.

Hi,
the pop folder reports a sze of 868kb and the INBOX.mbox folder contains only an Info.plist file and a messages folder.
As well as the messages in the inbox, all but one of those that were in the sent folder are also missing. Spotlighting for the missing e-mails turns up nothing either.
I am most mystified that Mail appears to have deleted messages without warning and without putting them somewhere sensible like the Deleted messages folder or the Trash! Could it be happening if the synchronise button is hit?
The POP connection problem is also a complete mystery - in fact it is currently working fine!

I have to restart mail most times before it starts recieving or recognizes the pop server.

  • Apple Mail has stopped talking to the server, or so it seem

My Apple Mail has stopped talking to the server (Mobile Me), or so it seems. I was sending a couple of attachments the other day and too late realised that they were huge. They were PDF's I'd done, and I hadn't checked the size, so I ended up with 32Mb of attachments on a single email.
This seemed to mess things up. I tried deleting the sending message from Mail as I couldn't seem to stop it sending, which I think I managed to do, but it kept reappearing in the drafts and deleted folders.
I can access mail fine from Mobile Me and have managed to send what I needed from there, but now Mail doesn't seem to connect to the server (I just get the wheel), and whilst its trying my other mail accounts, which are on another ISP, disconnect.
Mail is giving me an error message now when I try to quit: +"Some actions taken while the account "me.com" was offline could not be completed online"+. The additional info says that operation could not be completed: MFMessageErrorDomain error 1028
Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this?
    Many thanks...

    R,
Not looking the correct place. Home means to click on he Icon of House that represents your user account folder as found in the sidebar of every Finder window. Then in that User Library. You clicked on the hard drive icon, but then looked in the Library at its root level -- wrong Library.
Also can be written as ~/Library.

  • TS3276 Mail keeps checking a pop server related to an account I deleted.

    Dear Friends,
A few months ago I upgraded to Lion and all Mail accounts were moved to the new version of Mail.
A couple of weeks after I deletes the pop account related to my company web server. All the messages not moved to different folder were deleted and the pop server and SMTP server 10.1.11.100 disappeared from the server list.
I realized from the "Activity" window that Mail keeps checking it for new e-mail.
I deleted Mail's preference file without success. I searched with spotlight for an occurrence of "10.1.11.100" in files and system files without any result.
Is there any further step I can take to stop Mail from checking this server that doesn't exist anymore?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    lS.

Check the smtp outgoing server list and see if one still exists for that account. If so, delete it.

  • Mail not downloading from pop server

I hit the get mail button, and I see "Incoming Messages" working away in the bottom left corner, but the messages don't get downloaded to my imac.
I checked the Account INfo and the mail is on the POP server, but hasn't downloaded to my mail app.
    What can I do?

This is bad. My Inbox now shows empty. I have checked the mbox/messages folder, and it contains a lot of emix files, which are readable, but strangely, they are very old, many from previous years. There are no recent mails in these emix files. Yet I only keep the last couple of months' emails in my Inbox!
There are over 600 messages on the POP server, and I have stopped checking mail, in case Mail tells the server I have them, and my pending mails are deleted on the server. Checking Mail does not seem to show any new mails in my Inbox, although SpamSieve has logged several. (I have saved SpamSieve's log, so I can have its summary of emails I've supposedly received, and I can email their senders about them later if I have indeed lost these emails.)
I have turned off TimeMachine, so it doesn't overwrite my previous Inbox. When I check it, it contains emails up to the point where I upgraded to Leopard (21 November), but when I open these emix files, they only have a title, no contents.
I am confused and worried. Before upgrading to Leopard, I had a working mail client, and a lot of email in my Inbox. After upgrading, I can't receive mail, and my Inbox shows as empty. I have repaired permissions and restarted, more than once. Console has no comment: indeed, it shows no information after the 21st November (the day I upgraded), although other logs, such as the SpamSieve log, continue to update, and crash logs continue to be written. There are older "console" logs from previous dates, but the current "console" only goes up to 21st November.
Please advise me. I am frightened to do anything else myself, in case I lose my data. My concentration is very limited, but I can follow simple instructions.
I do not understand why Leopard Mail has rearranged my mailboxes. I had quite a few extra mailboxes within my overall account, and I filtered mailing list messages into them. (These mailboxes still contain their mail, including some messages which SpamSieve logs as received today.) These extra mailboxes are listed as part of "On My Mac", which I thought used to be the whole hierarchy, but after upgrading to Leopard, is only a sub-section of the hierarchy, listed after Reminders and Smart Mailboxes (I installed MailTags once, but had problems with it, so I removed it). Could this rearrangement of mailboxes be part of the current problem?
Thankyou for any help you can offer.

  • HT2500 how do i get my mail from the pop server to my inbox

Can someone please help me ! I'm sure I did something by accident and don't know how to fix it. My problem is i don't see any emails in my inbox, however my account info says there is mail on the pop server. how do i get the mail from the pop server to my inbox?
    thank you for helping

    First try rebuilding your Inbox.
    Select the Inbox.
Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select Rebuild (last option in list)
Note: If you delete a POP account in Mail, it will delete any messages in the Inbox. It does not delete your custom folders or your sent messages.
If the messages have been deleted and are no longer on the server, you can restore from Time Machine.
Let us know if this helps.

I'm having trouble deleting mail.  When I select all and delete it doen't always work.  Is there a glitch inthis app?

Have you reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen? If that doesn't resolve this, you can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will not lose any data, but all device settings will have to be entered again.
If that doesn't fix it, your next step might be to backup then erase all content and settings or restore the iPad to factory settings. See how if goes if you reset all settings first.

    Hi Cristina,
Headers are not shown in normal view.
Menu > File > Print to open Print View.
Hover the cursor over the Header to see the outline. Click and delete.

  • HT5361 Why can't Mail log into my POP server any more?

I have OSX 10.8.5 running on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Have been using the same two email POP addresses and account details unchanged for over 10 years.
A little while ago, the laptop stopped sending emails. It would receive emails but not send them, saying the password or account information was not correct. I removed, checked and replaced all the account information to no avail. Eventually, I deleted the accounts and then tried to reinstall them afresh but that is impossible because the computer says  “Logging in to the POP server…failed. Make sure user name and password are correct.” They clearly are correct as they work perfectly on my iMac, iPad and iPhone.
So far as I call recall the only changes I have made recently are upgrading to Mountain Lion (10.8.5), installing DropBox and installing Avast anti-virus. The system has been horribly slow for a few months but is marginally better over the last 48 hours.
Can anyone work out what has gone wrong?

    ssls6
    Thank you for responding.
I have had Avast on my iMac and on my wife's iMac for over a year. Up to now I have had no reason to believe it causes a problem though everything is slower. It seems to pick up large numbers of infected files. Mostly these are Windows style bugs and so (hopefully) not dangerous to Macs but not all of them are. If you do not use any AntiVirus software, are you not taking a significant risk?
Thank you for the advice on iCloud IMAP. I will talk to my email service provider tomorrow. But you raise another issue. All my devices are synchronised through Apple's iCloud which should mean all my mail settings too. So, why is one device not playing the game? What, if anything, have I done to cause the problem and what can I do to restore the situation? My MacBook is the only one on Mountain Lion. Could that be the issue?

  • Mail problem accessing Novell POP server

This one is both complicated and puzzling, and I sure would appreciate a solution.
We use Novell Groupwise for email. It allows both POP and IMAP access.
Two weeks ago, I stopped being able to access mail from the servers using either POP or IMAP from both home and office. Simultaneously, almost. At home I was using Mail, at the office Eudora.
After the usual tinkering, I got both home and office working with Mail through POP. That lasted a few days.
Yesterday, POP stopped working at the office. Then, at one point, it worked, and the day's mail came in all at once. Then it stopped working. I went home. I got a lot of mail when I checked in. Then it stopped. Today, I've gotten no mail at the office from the POP server.
Mail is communicating with the server. When I put the wrong password in, it lets me know it was not accepted. I don't get that message with the right password.
My IT people say the mail server is functioning properly, and that no one else who uses Mail is having similar problems. I've checked all the settings, and they are as they should be.
    I recently upgraded to 10.4.1.11.
Does this sound like a problem anyone has seen before?

Thanks to infinite vortex.  Changing the frequency from five to fifteen minutes seems to have solved the problem, at least so far.  Curious--but not surprising--that I could find nothing about such a limit anywhere on Cox's web site, nor was this mentioned by their tech support in a series of exchanges trying to resolve the problem.

  • Mac Mail password rejected by POP server with ATT ISP

Just 2 months ago my ATT mail server keeps rejecting my email password that I use on apple mail as well as gmail. Now I can't use my apple mail application but the same email address with same password will work for web mail by gmail. I spent $ and hours with ATT connectech service without resolution except aggravation from different call centers repeating same old stories.
Problem: every time I use apple mail, it pops a message to re-enter password because my email address/Password is rejected by POP server. Same address/PW work for my gmail account.
I thought I post here before I have to pay Apple for trouble-shooting now that I am done with futile ATT support. I may never get a fix. I even try to migrate to Comcast but it has problem connecting to my house. I am at my wit's end. Thanks for reading.

This issue may have more to do with your mail server rather than your Mac.
I too was afflicted with issue for over a week. I tried many fixes including, keychain repair, deleting my mail prefs and rebuilding my accounts by hand, toggling the interval button, shutting down and unplugging everything including AC power to my Mac. (btw -cancelling the message seemed to make it come back faster)
It was happening about half dozen times a day. Then one day it happened only 3 times, the next day twice, the next day once. Then gone! Fingers X'd it's 3 full weeks now without seeing it.
    There is hope!
EDIT: As Max Miles says multiple computers can cause this. All are valid suggestions and may work in your cases.

  • POP Servers and deleting messages

I created an account to retrieve my messages from my ISP thru POP, but when I delete them thru Mail, they remain on the server. Is there a setting that I'm missing to keep it synchronized? Thanks.

    Hello William.
You can't synchronize mailboxes on the server with a POP type account but you can select when to delete messages from the server when downloaded by the Mail.app.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Advanced tab for the account preferences, select "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:" and your choices below are:
    Right Away
    After one day
    After one week
    After one month
    When moved from Inbox
I have it set to Right Away for my POP type accounts.
There is also a "Remove now" button which removes all available messages from the server.

  • Mail hang with multiple pop accounts and invalid new mail counter

    All
More than a year ago, I migrated all email accounts from Outlook to Apple Mail using O2M application. I have 2 pop accounts and gmail account. Everything worked fine for a few month but then Mail started to hang during message receiving. It did so very often (4/5 times). When it does, nothing will revive it except a "force quit".
I tried to fetch email from each account individually, that worked well every time. After I was sure that it has to do with getting new mail simultaneously, I tried everything to fix it. I tried to reconstruct all the mail boxes, I tried using only 2 boxes with all combinations (1 pop 1 gmail, 2 pop, etc) but nothing worked.
I even tried to export all my mail boxes, then delete everything from Mail then reimport them with no luck.
In addition, a couple of months later, my "Inbox" new mail counter started to sometimes displaying the wrong new mail count. It displays 2-4 new messages while there is none. In order to be sure, I created a smart mail box to have only new mail and it had none. By simply switching to any other folder then returning back to Inbox solves the problem.
    Can any one help?

Make absolutely sure that your email addresses and configuration are correct. In nearly every case I've encountered, this is the problem.
If you've confirmed this, make sure you're configured properly on your webmail account, if you have one. Webmail is something like ATT, the source of your internet.
If you're still flummoxed, play hardball. Make sure you have all your current account info and passwords, and delete them in Mail/Preferences/Accounts. Then, reenter them one by one until they're perfect. This makes sure your settings are consistent and correct.

  • Mail Drafts from a POP account and inbox

Running 10.5.4 on an iMac G5 and Mail 3.3 Problem is that drafts appear from emails I'm creating on a POP account and also there will be an email from my inbox also in the Drafts folder. I can Delete, or in the case of an email being there from my Inbox, Move it back to my Inbox but the count number on the Drafts folder doesn't change and although the item is moved back to the Inbox, the count on Drafts remains the same. If I then click on Inbox and return to Drafts again, it will have brough in another email. I do have two Imap accounts but don't use them as much and don't seem to have any problems with them. I believe this has only occured since the 10.5.4 update.
    Any ideas, please?

"but I couldn't find any such setting in my friend's MacBook mail application."
I believe the equivalent setting is:
    Mail>Preferences>General>*Check for new mail.*
"Does it download on some pre-set schedule that can't be changed?"
You can change the times for the +"Check for new mail"+ setting manually or use the computer setting.
