Mail Stored on Unsecure Mac

Hi,
I just noticed that despite deleting mail and emptying trash (I have an ISP-provided POP account set up through Mail), the subject lines, etc. of deleted mail are showing up on a spotlight search under Mail Messages, and when you click on them, it launches the mail without a password or anything!
Is there something I can do to make my mail secure?
Thanks!
p.s. A secondary peeve is that when I launch mail it shows my inbox without even entering my password first. Thanks again.

Um....
Did you set a login password? It's there to lend security to Mail and other items in your home folder.
Just a note-why it is important to limit access to your user account, not just Mail.app: emails for each account are stored in Users/~/Library/Mail
If someone has access to your user account, even if you were to set a password on the Mail application, they could navigate to the folder and open the messages in TextEdit.
Aside from the basic login password, you can also activate FileVault, which will encrypt your home folder, preventing the recovery of information in the event the drive is stolen, but you still need to prevent others access to your logged in account.

  • I lost a Mail folder stored on the .Mac server:  Now how do I restore it?

With the new .Mac Mail put in place today, I somehow deleted a mail folder stored on the server. Fortunately, I just backed up this file last night.
Specifically, I backed it up by click-dragging all the mail stored on the Mail .Mac server to my desktop. That desktop file reads: Mac-username
Inside that desktop file, virtually all the mailboxes end with .imapmbox
Problem is, I can't figure out how to restore this folder. I tried turning Mail off and inserting the desktop backup copy into Library/Mail, etc., then restarting, but the one missing folder does not reappear on the server!
Perhaps I need to erase all the .Mac Mail files on the server first?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
MacBook Pro, iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Would like to sell my iMac 20" Intel Core Duo (1GB)

    You’re welcome.
I don’t think what you observed was caused by something you did wrong. Rather, it looks like a glitch in Mail.
As to how messages on the server can be backed up, I’d rather (1) copy them into custom "On My Mac" mailboxes in Mail first, then backup these, or (2) save them in standard mbox format (which must be imported as Other to bring them back into Mail), i.e. do File > Save As and choose Raw Message Source from the Format popup menu.
Backing up the data that Mail caches locally isn’t safe because it might or might not allow you to recover the messages afterwards depending on a variety of things, such as the account settings and the format used by the mail client to cache the messages locally (if any). What you did wouldn’t have worked in Mail 1.x without the aid of a third party utility, for example, no matter what the settings.

  • I have stored material on .mac, .me. and now iCloud; how do I get to it from my mac?  All can get from my iMac is mail.

What kind of "material" are you talking about.  If it's files that you stored on iDisk (part of MobileMe), then you won't have them available in iCloud - iCloud doesn't not offer a service similar to iDisk.

The Imap account does not need to be moved, sign in on the new machine, your mail will be there.
Does this mean even though these mails had been downloaded to the first Mac, they are still stored online too
Yes, Imap systems store all mail on the server, all connected clients are synchronized to the server (the mail itself stays on the server)
... regarding the POP accounts. Do you simply want the contents are or you planning on continued use of these accounts on the new machine?
    Continued use.
Export each mailbox from the old machine to the desktop, to do so select a mailbox, rght click and choose Export, repeat for all others. Move the mailboxes to the new machine'sdesktop.
I suggest setting up the new accounts before importing the mail from the old machine.
In mail choose File>Import Mailboxes, choose the ones on the desktop (one at a time) a new mailbox will appear in Mail called Imported, you can move mail from there back to the correct mailbox in the POP accounts.

  • Syncing Mail messages between 2 Mac book pros

What is the best way to keep 2 macbooks synced up identically, especially with mail messages.

With an IMAP account which is designed for access with an email client on multiple computers keeping all server stored mailboxes synchronized automatically with the email client used on different computers.
As an example, a .Mac account can be accessed as a .Mac type account, IMAP or POP account with Mail or as an IMAP account or POP account with a different email client on a Mac or Windows PC.
A .Mac type account with Mail is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
I access my .Mac account as a .Mac type account with Mail on myu Mac and as an IMAP account with Outlook Express on my Dell laptop running Windows XP at work.
When checking the account with OE on my Windows PC at work, all server stored mailboxes are automatically synchronized and identical to all server stored mailboxes with the Mail.app on my Mac and the same in reverse.
You can also store Sent messages on the server with a .Mac type or IMAP account.

I am getting more and more bewildered.  I just looked at google mails settings to see if they do something different from the isp I use and there they say the following: if the sent messages aren't stored on the server, then where are they stored? What happens to them if I set my preferences this way?  I want to wail and tear my hair out. I feel so very stupid.

  • All emails stored "on my mac" are gone?

Upgraded to 10.8.2.  All my Macmail email folders that were stored "on my mac" have been emptied.  I see them in "All Mail."  How do I reorganize/assign them back to original folders?  I've followed other discussions, found them in Library>Mail>V2 and tried to import them from mbox format, but "no valid mbox files found".  Any suggestions?  I have a back up for Time machine, but figure out how to transfer files back to folders.  Thanks.

if you think it's a good idea to store these emails on iCloud - and I would have reservations about it - then the procedure is done in Mail on your Mac.
    1. Create a new mailbox, making sure it comes under iCloud. To do this, click the '+' sign at bottom left, and in the pane which opens set the drop-down menu to 'iCloud' and choose a name.
    2. Open the mailbox containing the messages you want to transfer
    3. Select some messages (don't do a large amount at a time) and drag them to the new mailbox in the sidebar.
Allow time for them to upload before continuing. This will remove them from your Mac. Repeat with other messages and new mailboxes as desired.
Now your important messages are on iCloud, and if it goes down or there is a server error you could lose access to them, which is why I question it being such a good idea. If you leave them on your Mac and ensure you have a backup strategy in place, that might be safer.
However you could do both by following the above procedure but holding the option (alt) key down while dragging. This will copy the messages to iCloud but also leave them in place on your Mac. Obviously you will then see them in both mailboxes in Mail, though only in the one mailbox at icloud.com

  • Mail app on my mac keeps opening spontaneously

The mail app on my mac keeps opening spontaneously  with a bizarre email with blank address fields. I have done a virus scan, which shows nothing. Any ideas?

Son of a gun! I can reproduce this on my system, but only partially. I created a new Mac user, logged on, attached to one of my less-used mail accounts (mail only, not contacts), and typed various search strings into the search bar. I could get addresses into the pop-down list that this Mac user had never communicated with and had no stored mail for, but seemingly only addresses that my normal Mac user had communicated with using the same email account.
You are sure you don't share (and have never shared) an email account or Apple ID with these other users on your Mac?

  • How can I migrate my junk-mail settings from one Mac to another?

I would like to move my junk mail settings from one Mac to another. I found this article (https://kb.siteground.com/how_to_synchronize_the_junk_email_settings_in_mac_mail /), but can't locate the file indicated in the article, so I suspect that the article is out of date (though it's not dated).
    Both machines - MacOS 10.9.5; Mail 7.3.
    Any insights much appreciated!

Make your user library visible and see if you can find it.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library.

  • Using a network-stored catalog with Mac OSX

    Greetings all.
I am using Photoshop Elements 11 on Mac OSX Mountain Lion and want to store my catalog on a local network drive (FreeNAS).  I have encountered many problems while attempting to do this.  Then I noticed in the Elements Organizer help, under the section "Repair a catalog", the following: "Note:  (Mac OS) You cannot access catalogs present on a network drive."
Is this true. or has someone found a workaround to the problem?
    Thanks!
    --John

Thanks, for that ( I assume we have to carry on in English due to forum policy even though we are both of German tongue I assume)
You mean the access problems are part of the "no network drive" thing? I suspected that. Took me a whole day in front of my computer to realign the mess.  So should one better not use the network drives at all? Quite a pity in times where everybody seems to use network storage.
No, I did not use organizer to use the photos. So there is no way to reconnect them? Should I delete the catalogue and start with the photos from scratch?
    Regards

Well, yes, these are part of the "no network drive" thing.
As for moving the photos, did you use organizer to move them? You will always have trouble if you move photos outside of organizer, even on the same drive--you have to let it manage your photos or it doesn't have a clue as to what happened.
