Mail stuck at 99 messages

I am using Apple Mail as my main mail area. I have gmail, hotmail, and my university mail address all hooked up to it. A few weeks ago while at work on a different laptop I went on the Gmail website and deleted and rearranged my emails. That night when I went to use my Apple Mail on my laptop (Macbook Pro) it showed that I have 99 unread messages. I cleaned out everything in Apple Mail and I tried re connecting my emails to the Mail App and nothing has worked.

Well, you could follow the suggestion given in the following link, which is essentially moving the Inbox mailbox to the desktop, then restarting Mail and then Import the Mailbox back into mail. Hopefully that will set it straight. The full details by David Gimeno Gost are in this link.

  • Mail stuck on one message and unexpectedly quits when trying to delete it

My mail was working fine until a few hours ago, no gliches at all. I checked the new mail and when attempting to delete the first new message, mail unexpectedly quit. I reopened it and tried to select another message and it quit again. Basically, I can't do anything except view this one email. Anything else causes mail to quit. I tried going accessing my mail online and deleting the messages but that has not worked. It appears the messages are stuck in my inbox.
I ran disk utility to check the permissions, etc. Have not tested and repaired the start up disk.
    Any advice would help
    Thanks

If I’ve understood it correctly, all you have to do is find a way to select the message and delete it without causing Mail to display its contents. Proceed as follows:
    1. Launch Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
    2. Go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled -- having this setting enabled is a really bad idea for spam-related security reasons anyway.
If you have the preview pane visible, Mail may still crash again as soon as you select the troublesome message. There are at least three ways to select the message so that you can delete it without Mail displaying the message contents:
3a. You can hide the preview pane by dragging the horizontal separator bar between the message list and the preview pane to the bottom of the window, or just double-click within the separator bar, so that the preview pane disappears and only the message list is visible. This would prevent Mail from trying to load the message when it is selected in the message list. To make the preview pane visible again, drag the horizontal separator bar up from the bottom of the window, or just double-click on it again.
3b. If you select the message with the mouse, the message is displayed in the preview pane when the mouse button is released, not when it’s pressed. This allows you to drag the message to the Trash or to any other mailbox without Mail trying to display its contents.
3c. Ctrl-clicking on a message causes a contextual menu to appear, from which you can usually (but not always, don’t ask me why) choose Delete or Move To, without the contents of the message being displayed in the preview pane.

  • Mail Stuck on "Sorting Messages"

Hello, I need some advice about a problem I'm having with Mail. When I open Mail, it tells me that I have several new messages in my inbox, but when I click on In, I am faced with a blank screen with the message "sorting messages". This happens with all my other mailboxes, including saved mail. When I try to quit Mail, I have to use Force Quit. Can anyone tell me how to get out of this loop? Do I need to reinstall Mail from the setup disk? If so, will I lose my saved messages?
    Thanks

Can you log on to the email account via webmail in a web browser, view the email and delete it from there if necessary.

    Hello Naila1,
It sounds like you are unable to send emails, as they go straight to the outbox, but you can get the emails without issue. I recommend using the Connection Doctor to help you troubleshoot what is happening with the following article:

  • Mail stuck in outbox. Mac locks up

I know there is a known issue with mail and there are numerous threads on the mail memory leak.  I am amazed a core app like mail has been neglected by apple for so long but anyway.   I have a mail stuck in the outbox and cannot get rid of it due to the memory leak.  Within a few seconds of launching mail the app hogs 10gig of ram and counting which doesn't give me change to get to the offending message.  I cannot rebuild mailboxes either.  I have been told it might be a gmail issue but I cannot do a thing once I click the dreaded mail icon.  Any pointers would be appreciated

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then launch Mail and wait for it to do whatever it's doing. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mail won't retrieve messages any more.

I have a PowerBook G4 running OS X Panther. My Mail application no longer retrieves my mail messages. I am having to run my web mail account, which is getting the messages but is obviously more of a pain to use. I can see one message in my status bar and activity report, and it also says that I have another "92 Messages" or whatever is coming, depending on how many I've opened and read in webmail.
The "receive" function seems stuck on the first message, then seems to time out, give up, and give me the "no mail" alert sound. Any suggestions?

Sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require removing one or more messages from the server. Assuming this is a POP account, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded by means of Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded and/or the first message(s) not downloaded yet (i.e. the message(s) that Mail appears to be choking on).
You may want to try to download those messages with another mail client such as Thunderbird first, to avoid losing them — and use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import them back into Mail afterwards if you wish.

  • Apple mail stuck loading

Apple mail stuck on loading of any message.
Worked fine from my iPad or browser.

    Options:
    Restart computer
    Restart Mail

    How to reindex Mail
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.

  • How can I stop Mail from replicating a message & trying to send?

A few days ago I tried to send out an email with three attachments which totaled over 53 megs. Of course it was too large for the server and I recieved bounce back that the message could not be sent. I then created two seperate messages with the attachments at appropriate sizes. I have multiple email accounts and didn't tink anything of the event other than "I should have checked before sending..."
The next day I started getting the system warnings that there was no available space on my hard drive. The previous day I had over 5 gigs of available space.
After researching a few options I noticed the Mail application was having trouble sending an recieveing from one of the four accounts. Then I spotted the culprit - the account was trying to send out the mail with the 53 meg attachment. It was replicating and storing the message and attachment in the "On My Mac" saved mail folders as "Recovered Mail". It had replicated 100 times - 5 gigs worth. The message was not in my Outbox or Sent mail folders.
When accessing the newly created "Recovered Mail" folder and trying to delete the specific messages the application would crash. The work around was to delete the folder. Howver, the next day the folder re-appered and began populating the hard drive with duplicate files.
    - Have tried virus scan (Norton AntiVirus) and using Norton Firewall to lock down all drive to internet traffic (annoying with block / allow mesages).
    - Have tried deleting the account and re-creating it.
After a few hours or a day the dreaded "Recovered Mail" file was back and hogging drive space.
The account is accessible from my iPhone and through web browsers with no issues. I can't even find the offending message and attachment. So I suspect there is a bug / corruption in Mail.
    HELP!
need to know how to fix it or if I have a new virus.
    Thanks!

    Is this an IMAP account?
If so, delete the messages in Mail from all folders and quit Mail.
Go the the website and clear the messages from all folders there.
Reopen Mail and verify the messages have been deleted for all folders.

  • My husband has an iPad and I just got one for me.  We both have the same e-mail address.  The message I get when I try to set my new one up is that the Apple ID is already in use.  How do I set up with our shared e-mail account

My husband has an iPad and I just got one for me.  We both have the same e-mail address.  The message I get when I try to initiate setup is that the Apple ID is already in use.  Any ideas on how to complete the setup of the new iPad since we both share the e-mail account?

If you selected open a new Apple ID account, go back a step and enter use existing Apple ID.
You will have to set up a separate iCloud account or your iPads will mirror each other.

  • Is it possible to have Thunderbird send an e-mail automatically when a message with a specific subject is received?

Is it possible to have Thunderbird send an e-mail automatically when a message with a specific subject is received?
I basically want to create a rule that will send an automatically crafted form e-mail to the sender when I receive an e-mail with the subject line "New Swimmer". Is this possible?

Thank you Todd, I was able to get it to work but I do have a few more questions...
    1) When I tested this, at the top of the message, before any of the text I created, this showed up: This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------040406040801080102080500 Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
    2) After the signature line, this showed up: --------------040406040801080102080500 Content-Type: image/jpeg Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-ID: /9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQEAYABgAAD/4QAiRXhpZgAATU0AKgAAAAgAAQESAAMAAAABAAEAAAAA AAD/2wBDAAIBAQIBAQICAgICAgICAwUDAwMDAwYEBAMFBwYHBwcGBwcICQsJCAgKCAcHCg0K CgsMDAwMBwkODw0MDgsMDAz/2wBDAQICAgMDAwYDAwYMCAcIDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwM DAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAwMDAz/wAARCAC5ApUDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QA HwAAAQUBAQEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAECAwQFBgcICQoL/8QAtRAAAgEDAwIEAwUFBAQAAAF9AQID AAQRBRIhMUEGE1FhByJxFDKBkaEII0KxwRVS0fAkM2JyggkKFhcYGRolJicoKSo0NTY3ODk6 Q0RFRkdISUpTVFVWV1hZWmNkZWZnaGlqc3R1dnd4eXqDhIWGh4iJipKTlJWWl5iZmqKjpKWm p6ipqrKztLW2t7i5usLDxMXGx8jJytLT1NXW19jZ2uHi4+Tl5ufo6erx8vP09fb3+Pn6/
(It was actually much longer than that)
Is there anyway that I can get that to go away? I obviously would prefer a nice, cleanly formatted e-mail to be sent just like I would send if I were creating it on the spot.
    Thanks,
    Evan
