Mail Suddenly Will Not Connect

Mail has worked perfectly since buying this computer a year ago. I sync with three mail accounts: an exchange server at work, yahoo mail (POP), and my mobile.me account. Suddenly, mail will not connect with any of them, even though I am connected to the internet.
This problem coincides with my receiving the dreaded "self-assigned IP address" error message on airport. This prompted me to reset my airport express base station, to zap my PRam, and restart my computer a couple of time. I am now back online, but mail won't connect. I just get spinning wheels next to all three accounts, and the little hazard/exclamation point sign.
I tried connecting to the internet directly with an ethernet cable, and that did not help either. All the account settings in mail appear unchanged. All my downloaded messages are there. But I cannot connect. I have mail in the queue waiting to be sent, so I can't connect either to send or receive.
Suggestions?

Could be a DNS issue, since you had to reset the basestation, if the DNS settings where being provided by DHCP.
See if you can do the following. (Ping your email servers)
Go into the terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal
at the prompt type
ping (Work email servers address)
you could see the following.
PING pop-sbc.mail.fy4.b.yahoo.com (216.252.120.29): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=0 ttl=57 time=23.697 ms
64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=23.364 ms
64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=23.788 ms
64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=3 ttl=57 time=24.701 ms
64 bytes from 216.252.120.29: icmp_seq=4 ttl=57 time=23.382 ms
If the address resolves correctly
Ping the Yahoo servers address, again you should see something similar to the above, if DNS is resolving the hostnames.
Not sure about mobile.me
If DNS is not working you will see something like this.
brent-hendrickss-mac-pro:~ hendrb$ ping [email protected]
ping: cannot resolve [email protected]: Unknown host
If it pings back correctly, do the following to make sure you can actually get out through the correct ports.
1) Verify for each account, which port the server is using.
In Mail. Go to Mail / preferences / Accounts (Click on the advanced tab)
If you are using SSL the port # will be 995, if your are not using SSL the port # will be 110, the port # will most likely be different for the works Exchange server.
2) go back to the terminal and see if you can telnet to the POP server.
telnet pop.att.yahoo.com 995
If it is successfully you should see something like this
rying 216.252.120.29...
Connected to pop-sbc.mail.fy4.b.yahoo.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
type BYE and enter to disconnect.
If it does not work and you get something like this
[email protected]: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
You might want to make sure you are allowing those ports in your firewall settings.
Hope that helps,
Brent

My iPad Mini with retina display suddenly will not connect to the Internet. It shows full wifi bars, yet no web pages will load. My Internet is working with all other apple devices in my house. The iPad also no longer works with celluar data. I'm not sure what has happened. It was working fine a few hours ago. I have tried resetting it, ive restarted my browser etc. I tried to erase all data from my Ipad but I can't do that because it needs to sign into my Apple ID and use the Internet!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Macbook Pro suddenly will not connect to the internet via ethernet cable.

I know this is a long shot... but I figured I would give it a try.
My macbook pro suddenly does not connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Please bear with me, as I am not very tech-savvy - I will try my best to describe the symptoms!
I connect to the internet via ethernet (we don't have wifi). It was working before I went to work, and when I came home I suddenly couldn't get anything to work (I know everyone says this, but I truly didn't mess with anything). Internet browsers just think for awhile and then turn up the 'You are not connected to the internet' error.
I went into my network preferences and curiously, the 'Ethernet' shows a green dot and says 'connected'. However it says 'Authentication server is not responding' underneath the last part that says '802.1X: WPA: eduroam' (I think that is my user profile).
When I go into my 'security' settings I can see that my firewall is off, so that shouldn't be causing any problems.
I've tried restarting the router and computer itself many times. Diagnostics just gets to a certain point and reports back 'Network Diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems.' I've also tried switching to a different ethernet cable, and I tried both cables out on a PC laptop and it connected without issue.  Additionally, I brought my macbook along to a friend's house and it connected to his wifi just fine, so the problem appears to just be with ethernet connections.
I know it's hard to troubleshoot this kind of thing without being there and having a look at the computer yourself, but any tips wouild be greatly appreciated.

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.

  • G5 suddenly will not connect to interent via Airport base station.

All of a sudden today, my G5 stopped connecting to the internet via my Airport base station. Usually when this happens, I just go downstairs and unplug the base station, wait 30 seconds, and then restart it. This almost always worked until today. I tried reseting my DSL hub (2wire using SBC) and after a few tries this worked only briefly before my G5 once again stopped recognizing my internet connection. My eMac downstairs, which is not attached wirelessly, connects just fine. When I open the network preferences on my G5, I have a yellow light by the Airport extreme option. I trashed airport prefs and I also trashed Yamipod, which I had just installed and was using right around the time when the G5 stopped connected. I restarted, and verified and repaired disk perms to no avail. Any help?

If you had to perform this kind of restart of your
AEBS frequently, then this may be caused by one of
    these two frequent reasons:
    - you run a buggy firmware version on your AEBS
    (5.6 and 5.7 have this kind of behaviour);
    - you have a new neighbour using a wireless network
on a channel much too near from your own.
If you'd like to check if you may be in one of these
easy to solve cases, just indicate which firmware version
is on your AEBS (AirPort Admin Utility shows it), and
tell us if you have neighbours using wireless network
    (iStumbler shows this).

  • After years of using firefox, it suddenly will not connect to the internet. Internet Explorer connects with no problem.

I'm using a WIFI connection and have had no problem for many months. All of a sudden, I get "Problem loading page"; "Firefox cannot establish a connection with the server". MS Internet Explorer works fine.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Iphone 4S suddenly will not connect to network. Was working fine after update.

Iphone 4S has been updated. Has been working fine. Today all of a sudden, searching for network. Texting through wifi works. Help. Tried removing and replacing sim card. Checked airplane mode, reset network settings. Any other ideas?

Turn off security just to test..
But you have tried all our work arounds.
If you want the fully operation airport utility.. download it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Do a factory reset and try again.
If it doesn't work, turn the wireless back on in the 2wire. There is nothing wrong with doing that. Lock it to channel 1 say and the TC to channel 11.
    Does the phone now work?
If not the issue is the phone .. the upgrade has killed it... I suggest you take it back to apple for checking.

  • IPhone 5 running iOS 7 suddenly will not connect to the iTunes store app.  Was working fine since the upgrade to iOS 7.  Anyone else having the same problem?

I upgraded to iOS 7 the other day and everything worked fine.  Today I noticed I can no longer open the iTunes app on my phone.  I used it yesterday to download a few songs and today it gives me a white screen with menu tabs on the bottom that also do not open.  I have tried every suggestion and read all the official apple support items and none of it works.  Anyone else have this problem or have it fixed after you had the same problem?

I have exactly the same problem. I too have tried everything that's been suggested, but still not working. Don't really what to do next? I have an iPhone 4S.

  • Apple mail will not connect to gmail (POP)

    Hello,
For a week or so, Mail just will not connect to Gmail. Macbook Pro, Lepoard 5.8.
I tried deleting all accounts and creating them again but I get a message saying that the server is not answering.
This happened suddenly and Mail had been working fine for years... No changes in the Mac, no new software...No known general problem with Gmail. Gmail parameters set to POP as I'm using this instead of IMAP...
So right now All accounts have been deleted and I cannot re-connect....
Latest: even my Yahoo accounts do not work any more now.
Perhaps I should remove Mail and re-install it again ?
If so, how the h..k do I go about it as I'm no computer expert !
Please try not to be too technical as I'm french and do not really master PC language that well ...
    Thanks and regards.

  • OSX Mail will not connect to iCloud server?

    Hi all,
I realise that this has been asked before but nothing suggested seems to work for me? Basically the Mail app will not connect to the icloud server? I use a @me.com email address. The error I get is:
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “p01-imap.mail.me.com” on port 993 timed out.
I cannot for the life of me change this server address. I think I need to lose the p01 part? I have tried deleting account and adding it back but still the same. The strange thing is that the settings on my home iMac seem to be the same but it is my Macbook pro with retina that will not connect. I am completely up to date with latest software on Mavericks. Mail is working for my work email on an exchange server so I know that app iteslef is working. Its been like this for a few weeks now but I thought it was just my work network blocking it but only just realised it is happening at home as well where it used to work.
    Any advice gratfully received.
    Thanks
    Chris

the 'p01......' is correct, so is the port 993. I would recomend opening mail and selecting Mail>Preferences>Accounts and then highlighting your icloud account and delete it by clicking the "minus" button, then add it back again.

  • My mini iPad will not connect to the internet. Getting a message that it cannot connect to the server.  What is this and how do I fix it?

My mini iPad suddenly will not connect to the internet or retrieve my email.  I'm getting an error message that says "cannot connect to the server".  How do I fix this?

Nevermind.  I found the answer from someone else's question.  Thank you.

  • I Pad will not connect to the internet

My I.Pad suddenly will not connect to the internet.

    -forget network
-shut down (wait for the red "slide to turn off')
    -tun on your ipad
-choose your desired network, type in the password
    hope that will work

  • Ipad will not connect to the internet?

My iPad has been working fine for a year on my WiFi, but suddenly will not connect to the internet.  Both my laptop and desktop connect just fine.  I have tried rebooting, resetting and deleting the WiFi connection to reestablish it, but nothing has worked

This isn't my forte' but resetting the router often works.  We have 2 Ipad 1s and over the last year and a half maybe 3x one of them wouldn't connect.  If I reset the router, even without doing anything other than check the connection in settings, it would reconnect and be fine for months and months,  Worth a try,

  • TS1388 Macbook will not connect to my home WiFi

I have an interesting situation. I have home WiFi set up in that is working fine - I know this because my iPhone connects to it without any problems. My Macbook always connected fine as well up until a week ago and all of a sudden will not connect to it. There is an exclamation point over the WiFi symbol. The WiFi setting is definitely turned ON and I can connect to my hotspot, but for some reason it will not connect to the home WiFi option. I have a brand new Macbook Pro and have done all of my software updates offered. My iPhone still connects to the home WiFi with no problems, so I know it is not a router problem.
Is there a setting on my MacBook that would prevent me from connecting to just this particular WiFi that could have gotten messed up accidently?

    Hey ashleeburke
I understand you are having issues connecting to Wi-Fi with your MacBook Pro. The following article may provide more assistance:
Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Most minor Wi-Fi issues can be resolved by simply powering off all devices, and power cycling your router/modem:
    Restart your network devices.
Powering your modem or router off for a few seconds and then on again may resolve network issues without any additional troubleshooting. If you have phone service through your ISP, power cycling your modem may interrupt that service. You may need to contact your ISP in order to restore your phone service if your modem is reset or powered off. Ensure that you have alternative means to contact your ISP (such as a cell phone) to avoid unnecessary delays in restoring your Internet or phone service.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • IPod classic will not connect/sync/charge on iMac

I have a 160GB iPod classic that suddenly will not connect, sync, or charge when I connect it to my iMac. I recently switched from a PC laptop to an iMac and restored the iPod so it would work on the Mac, put most of my music on my iPod and it worked fine. Once I got the rest of my music onto my Mac, I attempted to connect my iPod and sync the rest of it, but it won't connect. The battery icon doesn't have the flash or plug icon, and it won't show up on my computer or in iTunes. It still plays fine and WILL charge if I plug it into the wall outlet, but that's all. I've tried resetting the iPod several times restarted my computer with it plugged in, but nothing I can think of seems to work. It also will not connect to my PC laptop either. Any suggestions?

Are you sure that your iPod CLASSIC (160GB) is formatted as a MAC?
Just had similar and iPod CLASSIC is like a MINI HARDDRIVE.
Had to reformat it from Windows Fat32 to MACKINTOSH format.
Had no problem with battery icon though (so that is separate issue from my problem).
Late post but it was today's issue for me (Aug 6th)

  • TS3899 Mail on my iPad 2 suddenly will not download my inbox for one account.

Mail on my iPad 2, iOS 8.3 suddenly will not download my inbox. I have two other accounts on the same provider (AT&T - Yahoo) with the same settings that work fine. The account will send mail OK. Sometimes it will return an error message "cannot connect to server" after a long time of the spinning wheel. It was doing this just prior to updating iOS 8.3 and still the same after updating.
If I delete the account and re-add it, will I lose all my mail folders, the emails saved in them, contacts, calendar, etc.?
Will a restore recover them at that point?
    Any ideas or suggestions?

If you delete the account off the iPad you won't delete the info permanently, although you will delete it off your device. If you delete it off your iPad the data will come back when you re-add it.
