Mail takes a long time to connect to outgoing server

This has been touched upon in a number of threads but I'll post my own particular version in case anyone can throw any light on it.
When sending emails (Mail 3.6, OS10.5.8) it can take up to 1 minute for Mail to connect to the outgoing server. In the "Activity" window I get the message "Connecting to [server name]" for up to a minute, then finally Mail connects and the message goes through instantly.
This happens with any of three or four outgoing servers I have available. If I send another message immediately after the first, it is sent straight away.
I've tried the usual disk repairs, repairing permissions etc. I've thrown away Mail prefs and the Envelope Index etc. Tried with and without SSL. MY ISP can see no problem at their end and no problem with any of my settings, and other computers on the same network have no problem.
Anyone have any further ideas?
(I did post a similar problem in an earlier thread: in that case (OS10.4.11) mail would connect straight away but on sending the "100% complete" message would be shown for up to a minute. It is possible and even likely that the new behaviour is just a different manifestation of the same problem. Weird that it's still there after upgrading to OS10.5)

Hi,
This is a characteristic of some, but not all, ISPs, and not the SMTP itself. It involves DNS. See:

  • Takes a long time to connect to the internet when I first open an app

I bought my Macbook Pro Retina 13inch last weekend and I love it! Everything was working fine but over the last couple of days, when I first open an app, for example Safari, Google Chrome, iTunes, App Store, anything that requires an internet connection, it takes a long time to load up that first time, but after the first page has been loaded it works again fine until closing the app and re-opening it. When loading the App Store or iTunes it has even said an internet connection is required, even though my connection is fine and the other apps are still loading ok.
I first thought it was my WIFI connection but I have checked my router and everything seems fine, also my iPad and iPhone are still working fine with the internet.
Has anyone else had the same problem or can offer me a solution?

I am getting the same issue, on first starting safari the first page takes an age to load.. once it has everything is fine.
I have tried the 'Reset Safari' function but no difference. This only happens on my Macbook Pro Retina, Using safari on my iphone or ipad is fine. (I connect via ethernet too so its not a wifi problem.)
Any one got an answer to this yet?

  • Exchange 2013 mailbox takes a long time to connect with Outlook 2010

We just installed a 2013 CAS/Mailbox server in our Exchange 2007 environment and are running in coexistence while we migrate users over. So far I have only moved one 2007 mailbox over, a new account used for testing. Everything is working fine, OWA,
ECP, ActiveSync, etc... When connecting Outlook to a 2007 mailbox autodiscover takes a couple seconds and Outlook opens fine. The problem is when connecting Outlook to a mailbox on the 2013 server. Autodiscover takes about a minute before it finally finds
the settings and the mailbox takes about 30 seconds to open everytime. It generally times out, I click retry and the mailbox opens. Once in everything is good but the initial loading always takes a long time, double the time when opening Outlook with a shared
mailbox attached. All autodiscover is autodiscover.domain.com, Exchange 2007 is all legacymail.domain.com aside from the components that need to point to 2013. We do not have any certificate issues, well that's not true, at some time in the last couple years
someone applied a 3rd party cert to our domain.com root but not sure if that would cause this issue. Also, these are internal clients we are trying to get going with the 2013 mailbox, not external. I just applied a registry change that helped someone else
out there by disabling IPv6 for all components but that did not work for us MS KB929852. Any suggestions? Right now I am thinking of changing the internalURI for autodiscover to the FQDN of the server but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

Hi Angela, thanks for the response. I cannot post links or pictures as my account has not been verified?
The autoconfiguration tests passed, I will paste the xml below. Ping times were all under 1ms. When I entered the IP for the 2013 serve I received errors that the connection to Exchange is unavailable followed by another one that the name cannot be resolved.
I did this test by removing the Outlook profile and creating one manually without Autodiscover. I am able to ping the server by all names from the command prompt.
Our autodiscover.domain.com points to our 2013 server and the name is resolvable both internally and externally. Our certificates cover the internal server name fqdn as well as external names. I am doing all testing in the internal network.

  • Mail takes considerably long time to download attachments

    Hello,
Wondering if anybody has run into a solution for this problem:
Mail (Version 3.5, build 930.3) takes a VERY, VERY long time to download any attachments. I am using only ONE account - MobileMe.
Whenever I receive a message with an attachment (from Mac or PC) that is over 100K, Mail just crawls to a near stop when trying to download it. In fact, if the attachment is over 1MB, there is an excellent chance that the Mail program will hang altogether. I commonly will have to force quit the Mail application in order to get it working on the download again. THIS is the real problem. All other "text-only" messages come in at a normal speed and render almost instantly. In a message where there is a large attachment, the message and it's contents appear almost instantly, but the attachment(s) sits at the bottom, middle, or top of the message and remain "greyed out" while downloading. I get no indication that the attachment is downloading from the server in the mail activity pane either. It just sits there blank. Eventually the image will appear in the body of the message, but only if I click on another message in my inbox and then "click back" to the attachment message.
I just sent myself a message as a test. It was a 4.5MB Tiff file. It sent out from my account in about 45 seconds (ending in the "Swoosh" sound.) When Mail detected the new message a few seconds later, the download from MobileMe's servers took an astonishing 14 minutes to completely download and render in the body of my message. I can see no rhyme or reason as to why this is happening, but it has been present for over a year, even through OS updates, mail rebuilds, optimizations, and IMAP settings alterations.
The same download speed can be achieved on my wife's iPod Touch. Very fast.
The really strange thing is that my iPhone does NOT do this. I sent the same image again to my account and checked my mail with my iPhone instead. It took the same 45 seconds to send the image, but the iPhone was able to download and display the image in the iPhone mail App in just over a minute. This is using the exact same internet connection in my house, not Edge or 3G.
I have rebuilt my mailbox, deleted all accounts and settings, and have started from scratch several times. I am beginning to think that this is either an issue with the OS, or a major problem with my Mail application itself.
Any ideas on what may be causing this? I am using the standard MobileMe IMAP account settings that are provided when you set up a new Mail account.
Thanks for any help you can provide - this is driving me crazy. I have had to tell all of my friends to NOT send me any messages over 1MB or it will destroy my mail application for several minutes.

ME TOO!!!! This has been driving me nuts!!! I've been trying to streamline my workflow and integrate everything the way it's SUPPOSED to work, to no avail! Does anyone know anything about this at all? Is apple looking into this? Does anyone have suggestions?
With me, it's any msg that has an image file, which is every email my school sends me! The msg doesn't display, Mail hangs and I have to force quit.
    HELP!!!

  • Mail takes a long time to send messages

After a power outage in my neighborhood and being given new incoming and outgoing mail servers by my ISP -- AT&T and it's Yahoo portal -- Mail is taking a long time to actually send messages after clicking the send button -- a minute or two. Thunderbird sends them immediately.
I've grown fond of Mail. Anybody have any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how I can fix it?
    Thanks,
    Eric Weir

I had this problem and just got it fixed so thought I'd post up. I have a gmail account and the problem started 3 or 4 days ago.(no recent system changes or anything I can think of that coincided with the problem) An additional symptom is that Mail wasn't showing me new messages anymore either. I could go onto the web server for gmail and there was new emails waiting but even clicking on "Get Mail" wouldn't bring them into Mail.
I found in the Window tab a choice for Activity and one for Connection Doctor. I brought up Activity first and saw 5 items and nothing seemed to be changing on any of them. Got Connection Doctor up and it connected and said everything was fine (you can bring up details to see what ports and such it uses which confirmed that things were going ok) I went back to activity and hit the "stop sign" for all of the activity that was going on with the plan to just stop everything to try sending a new message. I started from the top and about half way through I heard the Zoom of a message going out (Mail had been working on sending the message for the last few minutes) and suddenly new activities were popping up in the list and processing quickly.
I tried a few test messages and everything is working like normal again. I'm guessing something got stuck and that is causing the slow messages at least in my case. Check it out!
I'm on a iMac with Snow Leopard.

  • Takes a long time to connect using D-Link router

I recently purchased a D-Link 802.11n router to replace my old Airport Snow, which seemed to be failing after many years. Now that I have the D-Link up and going, I have two problems:
1 - When I first start either Mail or Safari, it seems to take the router several minutes before it actually connects to the Internet.
2 - Internet access speeds seem to be slower than they were, on my wired network.
Does anyone know what may be causing these problems, especially the first one? Is there a setting I need to change, or should I just buy an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule ?
    Thanks!

  • I have problem with my Yahoo mail, e-mail take a long time to open (it first opens as a bank page). The provider think is something to do with the browser

Since a couple of weeks my btyahoo email is behaving strangely. It take a while to load when I enter, and if I click on an e-mail it opens a blank, contentless page. After a while I am eventualluy able to see the content, but it is annoying. BT (the provider) had remote access to check the problem and thinks it is something to do with the browser. They suggested I disinstall and install again. Can you advice? Will I lose all my bookmarks if I do so (I have quite a few...)

    * The first time you start up any application after turning on your computer is called a cold start, which is why Firefox takes a while to load right away. (I've noticed that future versions of Firefox start up faster on a cold start then Firefox 5.0.1.) Also, a lower amount of RAM could be slowing its start-up down since Firefox is kind of memory hungry.
    * As for the second part of your question, press ctrl,Alt, and the delete keys on your keyboard. The Windows Task Manager should start. Go to the processes tab and look for 'firefox.exe'. Right click on the firefox.exe and click 'End Process'. Hit Yes and wait for a minute.
    * Then opening Firefox again.

  • Mail takes a long time to start

It takes on average about 12 minutes for my apple mail to start and the spinning wheels next to the mailboxes to stop spinning so I can start using the applicaiton. I have years worth of email, about 18,000 messages.
Is there anything I can do to speed this up?
I have a very recent MacBook Pro. Less than one year old with plenty of disk space (750 GB, 250 free) and lots of ram (8GB).

  • Mail takes a long time to load

I have about five accounts, some of them IMAP others Exchange. In the past month Mail became extremely slow to load and start. It opens the app right away but I don't see any email and all the account inboxes have the spinning gray lines next to their names. Sometimes it takes five to ten minutes and all of a sudden mails start to appear. The rest of the day it works fine, but I can't wait ten minutes everytime I open the app.
I tried a couple of weeks ago to delete the com.apple.mail and it seemed to work fine for a few days, then it went back to extremely slow. Is there any solution beyond loosing preferences or reinstalling stuff?
    thanks

Run some maintainance on the sqlite file of Apple mail, as explained here:

  • Takes a long time to connect

Sorry I searched as much as I could.
I have a wireless router WRT54GX2 and have 2 laptops that I use.  Recently one of the laptops has started taking anywhere from 2 - 5 minutes to connect to the router, sometimes I have to restart completely.  My other laptop is still working fine and picks up in seconds.  I went into my network connections and set a static IP address after reading somethings online and that seemed to help  but I also read keeping it set like that isn't the best way to do it.  Anyone out there please help, this is drving me nuts.
I guess I should be more specific, the connection does not even try to connect, the icon just stays at the bottom with the red x on it.  My wired connection works perfect as well as wireless when it finally connects.
    Thanks,
    B

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
On most wireless computers, the software has a section called "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" ).  Go to this area, and delete all networks named "linksys".  Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Make sure that your current network is listed, and that it is set to automatically connect.  (Note:  you may need to highlight your current network, then select "Properties" or "settings" to do this.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Reports Take A Long Time to Open on New Server

We have a number of crystal reports.  Many have sub reports.  Some have a lot of sub reports.
Earlier this year we swapped out a file server.  ADAPCOFP went away and was replaced by ADAPCOFP1.  ADAPCOFP has been turned off for over a month now.
The reports run, but when you go to initially open up the file it takes forever to open.  The reports run fast once they are open, but take forever to open them.   One report, that we run daily, takes 3 minutes to open.  I turned the ADAPCOFP file server back on and this same file takes 5 seconds to open.
I did some google searches and see that others have had this same problem and seem to indicate that they found UNC references to a now non-existent server, removing the references fixed the problem.  We have looked and relooked and looked some more and canu2019t find any UNC references anywhere in the report.  There has to be something there because the state of ADAPCOFP seems to be the key to how quickly the report opens up.
Where should I look for UNC references.  We have Crystal that was delivered with Dynamics GP and 99% of our reporting is from GP.
    Thanks !

    Hello,
The issue is the reports are still looking for the original server because that server name is saved in the report file. You'll have to open each report up and do a Set Location to the new report. You'll need the same version of the REport Designer the reports were created in.
I suggest to call Dynamics and ask them how to update the reports.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Sqlplus takes long time to connect

    Hi All,
I am using database 11.2 on Linux x86-64 platform.
Using SQLPLUS (bequeath) to connect to the database as a particular user it takes a long time to connect and connecting to the database as any other user is instantaneous.
If I use TNS names and remotely connect to the database as the same user, it fails with following error
    ERROR:

  • Wifi takes long time to connect

My MacBook Air (13-inch, mid-2013) takes a long time to connect to any wi-fi network (~ 30 seconds), including known/previously connected ones. Upon wake from sleep, the network will have disconnected and will have to reconnect, again taking about 30 seconds. Also, I notice that even when the display turns off briefly, the network will still disconnect. It does not matter which network it is. However, Power Nap notifications will still show up and be up to date upon wake, suggesting that the disconnection is happening only when I wake the computer.
    Things I have tried:
    - removing all networks
    - toggling wake for wi-fi network access and put hard disks to sleep when possible
    - setting Location
    - deleting all network system preference files and restarting
    - resetting SMC
    - restoring OS X Mavericks (10.9.3, clean install) with no recovery of network settings
Any ideas on further things to try?

The latest OS X update (10.9.4) is supposed to fix some problems like yours.

  • Sometimes an e-mail will take a long time to open

Not all my e-mails open immediately. Some of them take a long time and I have to keep going back to them or wait until the next day.
All my e-mails don't do this. Just some.

I use ccleaner on a regular basis.
That may be one of your problems - apps that claim to 'clean your Mac' usually do more harm than good.
If I were you, I would try a 'fresh' installation of OS X. Simply boot into your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting), use Disk Utility to verify and repair Permissions and the use it to verify your hard drive and then install OS X anew. If you don't erase your hard drive, none of your data will be deleted (although it's always best to have a backup, of course).
If the fresh install doesn't 'fix' things, I would just start all over again - erasing your drive and reinstalling everything.
And stay away frorm CCCleaner, etc.
