Mail Threads

Since updating to ML I have noticed that in Mail when deleting individual emails in a thread they remain in the thread, the number changes but they are still in the thread its really confusing and annoying am i missing something here? is theer a good reason for this change?

Pep Moreno,
It seems that the solution offered above by Thomas Reed is the only one.

  • Mail thread in Apple mail not working after updating to Yosemite

I just upgraded to Yosemite a couple of days ago and I noticed that my mail threads are not working properly. Instead of having threads categorized by the subject line, I have thousands of emails in just ONE thread that are completely irrelevant to each other. I have deleted my email accounts completely and reinstalled them from scratch and they still have the same problem after my emails are dowloaded from my IMAP server. I have also tried to rebuild the email account and the same problem happens. I get around 700 - 800 emails a day so the thread function is extremely crucial for me to be able to track all of my emails, but there is no way to do it now when everything is bunched together.
Anyone else running into the same issue? I am using a third party host (Bluehost) as my hosting service, but this problem never came up on the previous operating systems or my IPHONE. Those still work just fine.
    Thanks

The longest thread about this seems to be this one: LINK
Best course of action now is to describe the problem to apple in the feedback form: LINK

  • I'd like to know how to change my profile picture that appears on mail threads on my mac.  please help.

I'd like to know how to change my profile picture that appears on mail threads on my mac.  please help.

There may be other methods, but below is how I change my email photo.
Here is how to change your Mac Mail email photo in Mountain Lion:
Open the App called "Contacts". Type your name in the search field. Your contact info and photo should appear. Click on your photo. You now have some photo options. I use the "Recents" tab, and simply drag photo files from Finder into that window in Contacts. Drag and drop.
If you have trouble finding yourself in "Contacts" you can also get there by doing this:
Open one of your sent messages. Double click your photo in that message. This opens another window with your photo in it. Double-click that photo. This should open your contact information in the Contacts App.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mail threading iOS4

I'm finding that my mail isn't threaded even though the option is turned on. My account is a Gmail account. What are others finding?

I went through the same thing yesterday and was so confused.
FYI, the mail threading is not THAT great. My threading finally started working and when you click on all the conversations it is ONLY the replies from the other emailer, not mine. I wished it showed ALL of the conversations!!

  • E-mail threading no longer working in iOS 7

Worked fine in iOS 6, not experiencing any other bad effects from the upgrade except for the occasional notification on the lock screen when tapping on and sliding to unlock not going to the app/article/e-mail being notified about but that doesn't happen often. I have made sure that in Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendar that Organize By Thread IS on and in the green switch position. I have not, and would prefer not to, reset all settings. This is happening on both my iPhone 5 and iPad 3 w/Retina Display. Any help is much appreciated.

With 7.1 on my iPhone 5, Organize by Thread is definitely NOT working.
On my Mac (Mavericks) a particular 'thread' of notification emails (not important what) is grouped together eactly as desired and expected since 'Organize by Conversation' is ON.
When viewed in iOS, even when 'Organize by Thread' is ON, that same 'thread' is displayed simply as separate emails rather than grouped as on the Mac. I thought this worked before, but I cannot be sure when or even if my memory is correct. However, what is clear is that a function that works on the Mac, does NOT in iOS.
However, the observant may have noticed a slightly different name in each case. It's '...by Conversation' on the Mac and '...by Thread' in iOS. I would understand them to mean the same thing, but who knows now. If they ARE the same function, why use different terms (VERY bad design practice) and if they are different, what does each actually mean?
I'm somewhat perplexed that such a fundamental failure is getting so little press. OK, it's not a major deal, but the fact Apple cannot get right something so simple...

  • Apple Mail (v6.6, Mac OSX v10.8.5) mixes up mail threads - why, and what can I do?

    Dear community,
I am having a weird synchronisation problem. My Mail (v6.6) on my MacBook Air (Mac OSX v10.8.5) mixes up random email threads after I read emails on my iPhone (5C).
    E. g. there is an email thread with Frank. Frank writes a new email that I read on my iPhone. Shortly after, I open Mail on my MacBook, so that Frank’s email is downloaded there as well, displayed as "read" and added to the existing thread with Frank. However, although still being named "Frank", showing the current date and reference, in fact it is an email of Fritz from two years ago, having nothing at all to do with the thread with Frank.
Synchronising with the iPhone with USB has no effect, although the emails remain correctly displayed on the iPhone. On my MacBook’s Mail, the email from Fritz keeps to exist a second time at the time and place where it is supposed to be. Frank's email that has been replaced incorrectly, seems to be lost.
I don’t have to explain how unfortunate such random email shuffling is. I shall be thankful for any support and hints. Many thanks,
    Ray Taras

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Show Sent Messages in Mail thread (using gmail and imap)

I'm trying to get my email set up so that I can use gmail imap and also have it show my sent emails within each thread. I can see it within "all mail" but not within my "inbox." Also, ever since I started screwing around with the settings my inbox now takes forever to upload mail or to register that I have read it on my laptop and when I send something from my iphone it shows up on my browser's gmail as "sent mail" which it never used to do. I'm just frustrated and would love for someone to tell me their settings if they're getting the thread view to work well and for a quick refresh! Thanks so much!!!!

I have a similar problem where the threaded messages feature does not work for me unless I reply from my iPhone. If I login to gmail from my computer and reply from the web browser the message will not be in the thread.
I just want my emails to be threaded just like they are in GMail in my web browser.

  • Apple mail + thread problem

I'm using Mail to view my IMAP account (Gmail).
However, all threads are grouped based on the subject and since there are many emails with the same subject, the whole idea of using "organize as thread" is totally gone.
Is there some way to "group conversations" like gmail?
    thanks!

As you have found, there is no free iCloud Support unless you happen to have AppleCare. You could try contacting MobileMe Support - a number of people have had problems resolved that way. Go to http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme/ww/ and select your country. In the next window click on a category to expand it, then on a subject to get a link to 'live chat'.
Presumably after June MobileMe Support will go away as will MobileMe itself, which would leave iCloud with no free support. You might want to consider whether you want to entrust your email to a service which has no contactable support (though to be fair, neither do the other free services such as Yahoo and GMail -  as usual, you get what you pay for).

  • New mail - threads

    Hi y'all,
When (1) I send a mail, (2) get a reply and (3) reply to that again, then:
    1. of course gos in the sent mail folder under the account it has been sent with
    2. comes into the inbox on that same account and
    3. goes into the sent mail folder again.
The effect of this being that I get my sent mails together in a thread, but not the answer I got in between.
What I would like is all of these mails te be in one thread. Should I really make a new folder and drag mails in there to be able to establish this?
    Any ideas?
    Gerard

That's it, thanks, should have found that myself, instead of creating multiple smart mail boxes (which also does the trick...)
    Thanks again.

  • IPad Mail threads are organized by Subject.  Can Mail on iPad be adjusted to organize Threads by Sender?

iPad Mail in iOS7 seems to have only one option for organizing by Threads.   It defaults to organizing by Subject.   Is there a way to switch Threads to be organized by Sender?

Hmm, yes, I have exactly the same issue. Apple mail upgraded my IMAP account to an IMAP Exchange account, and now I have messages that stay unread until I unorganize/organize by conversation. Other devices that use IMAP do know that the message has been read...
    Any solutions anybody?

  • IOS 4 Mail Threading  - should sent messages show?

    Hi There,
I upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4. I've set up Gmail (Exchange) and also a Rackspace provisioned IMAP account.
I've mapped the Rackspace account's paths for /Sent, /Drafts, etc.
Regardless of whether I'm replying from desktop or the iPhone mail app, my replies do not show in threads.
Are Sent messages supposed to show up? Or are threads simply 'incoming messages' with the same shared subject?
I was under the impression a thread was more like a Gmail thread where sent/received messages with a shared header are all displayed chronologically.
    Any insight would be appreciated!

I have the same issue and it is driving me a little nuts.
Some of my messages in the iPhone native mail app seem to show threaded.. i.e. there is a small number next to a message to show how many contributions to the thread and inside the thread I can see my friend's email and then above my email and then above my email back to them and so on... Yet this is by far the minority of the messages. Most show only the mail received from the other party in the conversation. And the small number which states how many messages are in the thread is different than the figure in Gmail which notifies of same.. because of course half the threads are not there!
I've tried many solutions - including one which had me go into Gmail, remove all of the 'inbox' labels from my email (effectively remove my mail from the inbox), re-add my messages to the Inbox, and then pull email back into my iPhone.. phew. After which things seemed to work on some conversations. Yet back to square one now.
I have tried the Exchange mail option, the Gmail option. I've tried push and fetch methods. I've tried deleting and starting again. No luck.
I though the issue may be that I was replying from within iPhone then continuing some conversations in Gmail online. That didn't seem to be the issue. I've now seen note that Google is offering the ability to 'turn off' conversations in Gmail.. perhaps rolling out this option has caused server issues with Push mail. Don't know.
Either way it seems I must use Gmail via their mobile view in Safari - which actually works very well, with much of the native Gmail functionality.
Is there a likelihood Apple will fix what is going on? Is it an iOS 4 issue? Or is it a Gmail issue? Very strange, very frustrating...

  • Undestructable mail thread

I have a thread of ignorant emails that i simply can not delete from my inbox in mail.
The thread are of set of "delivery status notifications (failures)".
I can click delete and they disappear but then reappear after a short time ( i assume each time mail checks for new emails ).
I am using an IMAP account. I have tryed deleting 1 at a time, in a thread, unthreaded, dragging to trash etc etc.
    Any ideas.
While i am here - the tabs at the top of this textarea look kinda XP style .. ?
Also i hope that Mail in Leopard will work over a proxy server.

I am having a similiar issue with my Mail account. I continue to have messages from sender: "InterScan MSS Notification" Subject Line: "Mail Could Not Be Delivered"
I delete the messages out of my Inbox, but they come back as soon as I click into a different folder, then return to the Inbox, they are back!!
uuugggghhhh... It has been very frustrating.
Sorry I don't have any solutions for you guys, but I am anxiously hoping that someone might be able to help us!!!

  • Messages don't show in mail thread

    Hi
This has happened several times, so I thought it was time to see if there was a solution.
When i am writing emails, the threads build up. Which is not a problem.
But sometimes, like the next day, I need to recall what was said in the email thread.
I type in the name of the person to find the list of their responses. All good!!
Then, for some reason the headers of the emails appear, but none of the message.
And sometimes with my reply message as well.
If I come back later, it may show them if I go through the same process, or it stays the same.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks

    Try rebuilding the mailbox.

  • Can I turn off mail threads?

When I get Pictures in a email I get duplicates because it is titled 33 (example) pictures for you and it pulls up every grouping of 33 (example) pictures from previous emails. It loads every grouping and is not necessary. can I turn this feature off?

You can try turning off "Organize by conversation" in the View menu.  Also consider using "Classic Layout" in Mail Preferences, Viewing.

  • Lion Mail not showing message content in thread

I seem to be getting random problems with mail threads in Mail on LION 10.7
When viewing the thread, organized by conversation, on the far right I get the related messages OK - great.
In some cases I can see all the content of the messages and in others I can only see the headers and none of the message content - seems to be random on different message threads - some work and some dont.
Is this a problem others have experienced?
    Thanks, Chris.

Do you use IMAP or POP to access your e-mail provider? Or eventually IMAP for one e-mail account and POP for a different one like e.g. hotmail?
POP always download the whole message to your computer. IMAP (depending on your settings and mail provider's settings) eventually only the header or a portion of the e-mail.
If you use IMAP, eventually check the account settings in Mail according to the picture below (the "Keep Copies" one) to have the complete e-mail on your system.
