Mail Tips working in OWA not Outlook client

Added a throttling policy to limit the recipients per 24 hour period and it works as expected.
The issue I have is that the Mail Tip will show in OWA that they have hit their limit but in the Outlook client it just errors out with no Mail Tip. All other Mail Tips work in Outlook.
Ideas?

Hi Moose,
According to your description, I understand that one mail tips works fine in OWA but not in Outlook client.
I want to double confirm whether all users or some special account face this issue?
If this works in OWA, this might be related to Autodiscover or Outlook client, Outlook uses Autodiscover to find the URL for Exchange Web Services; EWS is used to retrieve MailTips.
Additional, please try to use outlook cached mode then re-create profile for test.

  • Personal tags in Retention Policy only working in OWA, not Outlook 2010 client

    Version: Exchange 2010 SP2
Client: Office Professional Plus 2010 SP1
As we don't want to enforce retention or archiving policies, but still give users the options to add tags to folders I set up new Retention Policy with the following tags only:
-Personal 1 Year move to archive with age limit of 365
-Personal 2 Year move to archive with age limit of 730
After enabling the Archive for a test user and adding their mailbox to the retention policy, in Outlook client assigned the "Personal 1 Year move to archive" tag (from Ribbon) to a folder with email going back several years. I ran Folder Assistant
in PS for that mailbox, but nothing happened.
I then assigned same tag to same folder using in
OWA and it worked immediately after running the Folder Assistant.
ManagedFolderWorkCycle is set with default setting of 1 day.
I have seen other posts and have tried the above in non-cached mode with no change.
I posted this in the Partner Network forum too but not much luck there
Has anyone come across this before?
    Thanks,

I decided to document exact steps trying to use Message Management on a different mailbox. Steps and results below. Note all these steps
were with Outlook in online mode:
    Executive summary
Adding tags to a folder in OWA works as expected. The same process in Outlook client (even in Online mode) does not.
    1. Enabled Archive for mailbox
    2. Assigned Policy
    3. Opened Mailbox in Outlook client (2010 Professional Plus SP1)
    4. Assigned 1 Year tag to a folder with emails going back 2+ years
    5. Ran "Start-ManagedFolder Assistant" on Exch Svr
    6. Opened mailbox in OWA, folder does not show as having policy assigned
    7. Opened Outlook
    8. Checked in Ribbon if policy still assigned to folder, none showing as selected
    9. Checked Archive, only some mails moved to archive, many that are much older than 1 year not moved
    10. Re-set same tag in Ribbon
    11. Closed Outlook, re-opened, tag still not showing as assigned
    12. Opened Mailbox in OWA
    13. Added 1-year tag to another folder with emails going back 2+ years
    14. Re-ran StartManagedFolderAssistant on Exch Svr
    15. Opened Mailbox in OWA
    16. All emails correctly matching the tag moved to the archive
    17. Policy added to folder in OWA showing as assigned correctly
    18. Policy added to folder in Outlook not showing as having a tag assigned
    19. Opened Outlook
    20. Tags in Ribbon still not showing as having policy assigned
    21. Properties of folder changed through Outlook showing as having “Parent Policy”
    22. Properties of folder changed through OWA showing correct tag/policy

    I have done:
    Reboots
Restart the Microsoft Exchange RPC Client Access service on the Exchange 2013 server

  • Database mail only works from SSMS not from a job

I have a script that returns its results via DB mail. When I run it from SSMS I get email, when I run it from a job I don't get email
Here is the error message from the DB mail log
    Message
The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 1 (2014-09-23T10:12:29). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (The operation has timed out.).
I've already enabled mail in SQL server agent.
    1. Went into object-explorer, right-clicked on the SQL Server Agent, and selected properties.  Then
went to the Alert System page, and enabled the mail profile for the server agent. (you may already have this).
    2. Then, went to "Database mail", right-clicked and selected "Configure

  • Retention Policy not working for OWA accounts

I have Exchange 2010 running, with 100% of users using OWA, not Outlook as their mail client.
I have one use that wants to have messages in all his folders deleted at the end of each day.  Specifically, these folders are under the Inbox, but are subfolders in the Inbox, not the Inbox itself.
I set up a retention policy tag with the Tag Type "All other Folders in the Mailbox", with age limit for retention for 1 day, and the action to delete and allow recovery.
Then I applied the Retention policy just to that one users.
The next morning, all the messages from the day before were still there.  Did I miss something in the setup?
Does the "1 day" retention delete messages after 24 hours of the message being there, or at the end of each day can I have it delete all the previous messages?
Does this have something to do with the fact that we are running OWA, not Outlook?  I can right click on the folders and view retention policy...it just says "Use Parent Folder Policy"...nowhere can I find the parent folders policy.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi,
For your retention policy not working issue, we can try the following troubleshooting:
    1. Please check whether it has Event ID 9017 and 9018, to make sure the MRM working well.
    2. Please check the Managed Folder Assistant service is working well.
    3. Please use MFCMAPI Tool to check the "PR_MESSAGE_DELIVERY_TIME" and "PR_CREATION_TIME" properties on the items that should be removed.
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Outlook 2010 Mail Tips Could Not Be Retrieved / Out Of Office Doesn't work too.

    Hi,
We have a small set up with 5 pc's and 1 server. All of the workstations are exactly the same.. specs,OS,software etc...
One of the users is currently experiencing "Mail Tips Could Not Be Retrieved" issue.
It shows up right above the SEND button when replying or sending a new e-mail.
Also Out Of Office / Automatic Replies function does not want to work as well. It asks me to try again later cause the server is not responding.
The funny thing is that this is happening only to a single user.
    Here is what I've tried:
    - Tested E-Mail AutoConfiguration - Autodiscovery works fine and points to the right directory.
    - Deleted the profile and recreated it ... didn't work
    -  Added the same mailbox to another computer - IT WORKED
    - Checked all the SSL settings for each virtual folder in IIS and they are all set to IGNORE the certificate.
The other strange thing is that when I try to download the OAB from the affected PC a credential window pops up and asks for the username/password
of the particular mailbox.. Once I enter them the "Mail Tips could not be retrieved" message disappears and Out Of Office is accessible and ready to be used.
Maybe Outlook 2010 setting or registry value ?

This sounds like an authentication issue for the Autodiscover/EWS URLs and your last paragraph basically confirmed it.
Is this PC domain joined and is this user logging on with his domain credentials and not locally to the computer?
Is the user able to access:
    https://autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
    or
    https://domain.com/autodicover/autodiscover.xml
An xml-page should be returned with ErrorCode 600 Invalid Request.
Is there a TMG or UAG server involved here?
Also check the proxy settings in Internet Options (if configured/required).

  • Outlook 2010 and 2013 are unable to connect but OWA (and mail routing) works fine

    Hi-
Not sure why but this past Sunday (just after DST adjustment) outlook clients (using 2010 and 2013) were unable to connect to an Exchange 2013 server.  OWA and mail routing (internal and external) is working fine.  I've even tried on multiple machines
and all of them experience the same issue.  On a new machine with a fresh version of outlook 2013 installed here is what happens:
    Click on Outlook 2013
Click Next until the account setup is displayed.
    Name and email is auto-populated
    Established network connection is good
Searching for email address settings is good (once the self-signed exchange 2013 cert is accepted)
And then the logging onto the mail server fails.  The first pop-up is:
The Connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable.  Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.
Clicking "OK" is followed up with a window with the Microsoft Exchange connection info.
It lists Microsoft Exchange server which is populated with: GUID@<domain suffix>
Mailbox which is populated with: =SMTP:<Valid Email address>
On the Exchange Server I have noticed that the Web Management Service (WMSVC) is stopped and will not start.  Starting the service outputs:
    EventID 7024
"The Web Management Service terminated with the following service-specific error:  Unspecified error"
    Not really helpful :)
Since this is only happening with Outlook on multiple clients I'm expecting something with Exchange or the ability for outlook to connect to exchange.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
I know this is an old post, but I'm having a very similar issue. I have CU6 installed and all other client connectivity apart from internal Outlook connectivity is working fine. I have distributed the new Self-Signed Certificate and the tested to verify
the clients trust it. I have tried on multiple machine with multiple accounts and none of them connect.
    I'm at the stage of reinstalling, but I would rather troubleshoot the problem, just in case ever hit the same wall in the future. I have run Test-OutlookConnectivity with the following output;

  • Different behaviour of Outlook (client) and OWA when sending mails

    Hi everyone,
we're developing an application which uses the push notifications of the Exchange systems to communicate (and synchronize) with the server.
We're currently facing the following problem: we want to create a mail in the drafts folder of a user via EWS (working fine) and when the user sends this mail, we want to be notified in order to look for changes made to the mail (in order to keep our own
"mail object" updated). The problem is, the Outlook client is sending a move-Notification from Draft to Sent Items whereas the OWA creates a Delete- and a Create-Notification.
Is there a reason for this difference? Is there a way to change it / is the change planned for future releases? Right now our application is only handling the move-Notification and since this application is running on a server for a number of users, we don't
want to create too many notification subscriptions which all have the same callback URL.
Thank you in advance and kind regards,
    Bernd

    It does happen in OWA.
We do have SP3 installed but we do not have the most recent rollup. We have version 14.03.0181.006 which is according to this article is Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3 Per this article, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh135098(v=exchg.150).aspx
The server performance is certainly questionable, but we haven't gotten very far with upgrading or replacing it and I think something like this would certainly be something we could point to as an example of how the server performance is affecting business
and the delay it causes. But I was really hoping to get something I could use to definitively point to as evidence of it being a server performance problem. Would you, or anyone who reads this, be able to tell me what the results of that cmdlet indicate?

  • Exchange 2013 with Outlook 2013 - Not getting pop-up or mail tips for attachments exceeding max size

Our environment is Exchange Server 2013 CU3 and Outlook 2013 in cached mode. We have a transport rule that sets the max attachment size to 20 mb.
If someone sends an attachment larger than 20 mb they receive an NDR letting them know the message wasn't delivered because it exceeded the max attachment size. We would like for the user to be prevented from sending the message at all or to at least
get a mail tip before they try to send the message. The Outlook pop-up message that says "The file you're attaching is bigger than the server allows. Try putting the file in a shared location ..." isn't being generated for us. Not sure if that's
because we're running Exchange or not. If that pop-up isn't going to work it would be nice if the user could at least get a mail-tip warning them that the attachment exceeds the limit. But it doesn't look likes there's a mail-tip for attachment size, only
for message size. And, I've found that the message size mail-tip only works if the limit is set on the user. It doesn't seem to work if the limit is set via a transport rule.
Has anyone else gotten Outlook to present the pop-up or a mail-tip when exceeding attachment size? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks but I performed all of those trouble shooting prior to posting to the forum. But, I have found the answer!
    After referring to this article;
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124345(v=exchg.150).aspx
I removed the 10mb default limits from the organization config and chose to set the attachment and message size limits in our environment via transport
rules instead. That is the only way you can actually set an attachment size limit.
    I had read this article several times searching for an answer;
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2813269#appliesto
    The key is here;
"If you are using an Exchange Server account, the 20-MB attachment
limit for Internet email accounts is not used by Outlook 2013. Instead, Outlook uses the limit that is configured on your Exchange server. To modify the setting that is used to control the size of a message that is sent through an
Exchange Server account, follow these steps."
The steps that follow are for Exchange 2010 but they show setting organization limits not server limits. And note that it
says the size of a message, not the size of an attachment. Since mail-tips for message size are not displayed when the limit is set via the transport rules I thought it
was possible that the same inconsistency might apply to the attachment pop-up warning. I set the organization limits and voila! The pop-up now displays when an attachment that exceeds the message size limit is added to a message.
This is exactly what I wanted. Now users won't fill up their sent items trying to send large attachments that just bounce anyway.
It would be wonderful if Microsoft would provide information about what features of Outlook are affected when you apply message size limits at the
    various levels.

  • Lync Delegate Meeting Creation works in OWA but not in Outlook 2010

The environment is Exchange Online and Lync Online.
When users are assigned Delegate rights (either through Outlook OR via Powershell into Exchange Online) they are able to create regular meetings, modify calendar entries per their rights assigned in the calendar they have delegate access to.
However, when they attempt to create a Lync Meeting for the delegate calendar, they get the error that they do not have access.  HOWEVER, if they go to OWA, and create an Online Meeting for the delegate, it works perfectly.
The user in question is a delegate for 3 people.  For 1 of the 3, the user can create Lync Meetings for the delegate in Outlook with no issues.  For the other 2 people, the user gets the no access error.  However, the user can create Lync
Meetings for ALL 3 in OWA.
The rights and permissions that the delegate has to the 3 users are the same.
This leads me to believe it is an Outlook client issue and not an Exchange Online or Lync Online issue (the reason being the user can create the meetings in OWA)
Tried to create a new profile for the user, tried the /CLEANPROFILE switch and neither have resolved the problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi,
Since everything works fine on OWA, I agree with you that this seems to be a client problem.
Remove the delegate permission for the user completely on OWA, then regain the permission, re-configure the Outlook Profile to check the result. Please also make sure the permission of the calendars have been granted for the user too.
Since it's client only, I doubt whether background programs are interfering with Outlook, perform a clean boot to test:

  • Outlook client can't connect in but OWA works

You need to make sure your OutlookAnywhere and AutoDiscover settings are setup properly along with Split-DNS. OutlookAnywhere and Split-DNS are vital for future-proofing your Exchange configuration and making it work properly now, regardless if you use Exchange 2007, 2010, or 2013. For Exchange 2013, OutlookAnywhere is a requirement and Split-DNS is Best Practice. If you are on Exchange 2007 or 2010, and you do not have OutlookAnywhere enabled, enable OutlookAnywhere and follow this guide. You should always use NTLM over Basic authentication, as Basic sends the username and password in the clear, and NTLM is Windows Authentication. On Exchange 2013, you also have a new option called Negotiate, which is recommended. As you follow this guide, you will set the ClientAuthenticationMethod (Internal and External if on Exchange 2013) to NTLM...

Outlook client can't connect in configured outlook on workstation but OWA works.
