Mail to outside recipients does not arrive

I have a host running Solaris 8 [March 2003 Rec Patches] with IPlanet Messenger Server 5.2.
I have set up the mail store on this host [call it host1] and want it to use host2 as the smart host. My understanding of this is that all mail that is not local will go to the smart host located on my DMZ for eventual delivery.
I have made sure the firewall rules permit smtp between the two. I have ensured connectivity between the two. I have edited the mappings file to allow all local clients to relay through host1 [Messenging Server].
Local delivery works yet when I send mail to my hotmail account via either the webmail or Outlook IMAP client the mail goes out but never reaches my Hotmail account.
Can anyone suggest either of the following:
1. Which log should show me the error?
2. What I can do to fix this?
It appears as though nothing is broken as I do not see any errors yet a snoop on both hosts show no communication at all!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. Here are my findings:
1. I run the following after every change:
/usr/iplanet/messaging/msg-lamia/imsimta refresh
/usr/iplanet/messaging/msg-lamia/imsimta cnbuild
/usr/iplanet/messaging/msg-lamia/imsimta restart dispatcher
2. Used imsimta qm and then directory -env
That showed me two Channels: tcp_local and tcp_intranet
I have a large number of emails queued up in tcp_local which are from my local domain account and destined for my hotmail account. They should be routed from my internal IPlanet Messaging Server and sent to my outside [dmz] smtp server for final delivery. Yet they are not moving.
3. Typing history <message #>
Shows me the same message as I get every evening in my mailbox as returned messages:
Tue, 18 Mar 2003 18:58:57 -0800 (PST)
Failed MX lookup; try again later
4. Also make sure you have the daemon keyword on the correct channel (tcp_local).

Okay from this I conclude there is a fundamental DNS problem... MX lookup failure sounds reasonable yet I have changed my DNS to include the outside mailserver as both an A record and an MX record with a lower priority than my internal. Is there an ndx or nslookup command that you can recommend to ensure my DNS settings are correct for the IPlanet Messaging Server to find my outside mail server?

ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist

I'm running an Xserve G5 with one internal boot drive and one RAID using the other two internal drives. I used Apple's Disk Utility to set-up the RAID.
Back in early December, I moved my mail database and mail store to the RAID. Ever since, when I restart the server, the mailaccess.log generates the following error:
Jan 23 18:51:33 mail master[47]: ERROR: Cannot start mail services, configuration directory does not exist: /Volumes/RAID/mail.data/db
I'm speculating this is a timing error that gets created when Postfix initially can't find the RAID. Then, it must try again and find it because the error message does not repeat and mail starts running.
Is this something to worry about?

You're right, it's a timing issues. The mail system is ready for work before the file system is mounted. It's benign.

I changed my AppleID/Password and now am locked out of iCloud. iCloud says maximum number of free accounts have been activated. tried Settings, Mail etc but iCloud does not appear. I was going to delete it and start again.

Had to change Apple ID/Password recently now cannot access iCloud. In settings when tapping iC, log in screen appears with old ID and request for (old) password.
In Settings Mail, Contacts etc iCloud does not appear. I was going to delete account.
Trying new ID/Password message appears "maximum no. of free accounts have been activated".
Using old ID/Password message apperas "you can,t sign in because account was disabled for security reasons ......reset password at iforgot.apple.com which i did.
Can anybody help please??

I tried to log in to iCloud but a message appears telling me I "can't sign in because my account was disabled for security reasons....reset password at iforgot.apple.com". I don't know why this happened.
I reset both my Apple ID and password.
When I tap Settings iCloud is listed on the left side between General and Mail, Contacts etc.
Tapping iCloud brings up a log in screen for iCloud which shows my old Apple ID and requests the password. If I put the password in I get the message as above.
If I use the new Apple ID/Password I get the message "the maximum number of free accounts have been activated....
In settings there is no option to "Delete Account"
Any suggestions??

In Apple mail, the attachment symbol does not appear in the list of sent items

In Apple mail, the attachment symbol does not appear in the list of sent items. So you cannot sort sent emails based on whether or not they have an attachment. Is there a way to fix this?

I think my question wasn't clear. I know how to display the attachment header (I use classic layout) but the problem is that the paperclip icon does not appear against the messages that contain attachments. See screenshot below. The attachment column is displayed but is blank. These are my sent items and I know for a fact that most of them have attachments. Can you help?

On OSX 10.6.8 Mac Mail sent items do not show the Bcc field. Adjusting settings in mail/prefs/viewing/custom/bcc has no affect on Mail, ie Bcc still does not appear on sent items. Anyone got a fix?

so proud to be one of the first to have it =)
But now then i want to set up my hotmail windows live email accont in the phone and try using exchange email it does not work.
I can get it to have a inbox.
But no email uccors
and when i try to send an email it will not go.
It stays in the outgoing email folder.
What shall i do?

I saved it anyway and when I go to the Exchange email account it says "Cannot Get Mail" "The connection to the server failed." We are running Microsoft Exchange 2010 and I was always able to sync my calendar and email before I upgraded to IOS 6.

Unfortunately you are not providing us with any useful information. We need to know what app you are using to email at the very least. However what I'd suggest you do is call AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support (the number is in your owners manual) and they will be happy to assist you. They're open M-Saturday so you will need to wait until tomorrow.
BTW if you have not been exposed to these please bookmark them and begin using them. You may find your answer in one of the videos.

I have the same thing happening. Everything else seems to be working fine, except i can't open my mac mail at all! it seems to be in a loop and won't let me retrieve any mail or even try to send mail before migrating, but it fails and then its back to the beginning and the same loop continues, so no mac mail working. I also came from 10.6.8 to 10.10

if your youtube was already running then I would exit out of the application completely by double clicking your home button and then search for your youtube app on the row that will show below and then press and hold down the youtube icon and then click the "X" to exit out of it. Afterwards try to reopen youtube and play a video to see if it works
