Mail treats smtp as the "from" account

Hi --
I'm having an odd problem with sending email from Apple Mail. Essentially, it seems to ignore the account I am actually using and transforms the "from" to the smtp server I use to send it.
The smtp server for one of my email accounts is glitchy and works only from my office, so I wish to use another smtp server from home laptop. (iMac at work; Macbook at home; 10.5 and 10.4, respectively.) In preferences, I have set up the various accounts with both email address, separated by commas. And on the @work.edu account, I have smtp.gmail.com as the smtp server. When I send an email from this account, there are two drop-down menus. I select [email protected] in the first and smtp.gmail.com:otheremail in the second drop-down.
It sends, but the recipient gets it as if it is from my gmail account -- not the account I thought I was using. In the outbox, it shows the email as "from" the work account; but in the inbox (if sending tests to myself) it shows the email as "from" the gmail account. Huh?!?
This is confusing for recipients, causes replies to go to the wrong place, and prevents me from posting to closed email lists.
Can someone help? Thanks!

Thanks, Ernie. It appears that you are right. I just tried sending using my home ISP's smtp address instead, and the test message now appears to be from my work account, as intended.
But this raises another issue. The nice thing about using an smtp server for one of my two active email accounts was that my "sent" folder on all computers (home, work, and iPhone) had copies of all sent messages. (I use IMAP.) Unless I create another account, which is really clutter since I don't use my isp address, I won't have it now. Unless there's a trick in Mail, perhaps?
I truly appreciate the help on this!

This is how I fixed it on my new iPhone 5S. Using the standard yahoo setting on my phone.
You will have to access  "managing your app passwords" on your account profile for yahoo. Generate password for your app. For example: "My iPhone 5S'
Go to your Iphone and set up your yahoo mail account on your phone the normal way and you have to use the generated password.  instead of the yahoo account password.

  • IOS 8 Bug: In Mail the sender account defaults back to last account from which an e-mail was sent overriding the default account setting

I cannot get over it ... how can a company that designs such wonderful hardware write such poor software? Apple should really feel ashamed. Anyone Windows-bashing should realise that computing is about more than just fancy screen backgrounds. I am so sick of this.
Anyway - here is my latest bug report (which as an IT professional I should charge Apple my time for):
When you access multiple mail accounts from your iPhone (iOS 8.2 12D508) you need to specify a default mail account. This is (or at least used to be in working implementations of this feature in previous iOS versions) the mail account that mails will be sent from unless the user selects another account.
The problem in the current iOS version is: After sending a mail from a non-default account, the next mail will also be sent from the same non-default account rather than from the actual default account. The incorrect sender account gets selected after picking a mail recipient.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Send an e-mail from a manually selected non-default mail account on your iPhone.
    2. Start composing another e-mail. Initially, the correct default account is shown as sender account.
    3. Now select a recipient address.
==> This is when the sender mail account reverts to the last e-mail account that a mail was sent from (in our case the non-default account).
    Temporary Work-Around:
When the sender account reverts to the non-default account, manually select the default account again.
Apple, please go and do your homework! Fix this annoying bug. Thank you.

I can't see anything genuine about it!
Since the link to the Apple id: Tips for...   actually says it goes to a site named "bingo", I think it's quite clear that this is a phishing email, designed to get you to click on and go to their site, not an Apple one. I hope you have not clicked on the link.
It is not a good idea to put your own persoanl information in a post on a public forum. I will ask our hosts to remove it and the link. Don't be surprised if they remove the entire thread.

  • How do I install a new Exchange account with the same address as my old Exchange account and have my bcc mail not go to the old account?

I have an iPhone 5s running iOS8 and an iPad, up to date.  I have recently changed my mail server but not my email address.  My "old" mail account is an Exchange account and I have also set up a "new" Exchange account with the same address but with the new mail server details.  When I receive outside, third party emails they are routed correctly to the "new" Exchange account but when I bcc myself or receive other emails from any account with my domain name the emails are routed to my "old" Exchange account.  I have changed the default account settings to the "new" Exchange account.  Also, if I send myself an email from my laptop, through the new mail service provider, it is routed correctly on my laptop but incorrectly on my iPhone and iPad.  It appears as though the Apple products have cached my email address and routing and won't look to pick up the new mail server details. I don't see anything in the mail account settings or contacts that allows me to refresh or clear the cache.  The result is I now have mail in 2 accounts. If I can get the misdirected mail from the odl account to the new one I will then make the old account inactive.  Anyone have any ideas on this one?
Thanks in advance for your time and ideas,
    DAA

Can you set up a rule in your old account to forward mail to your new account and then delete it from the old account?

  • Replies to my outgoing e-mail return always to the same account

I have this problem: I have several account and for all of them I use the same outgoing server (gmail). I can choose to send every single e-mail from each one of my accounts but when the receivers reply to my e-mails, whatever is the used account, the replies arrive only to the account of the outgoing server (gmail account). The macbook pro is sync with iPhone.
Do you have any idea on how to allow that every e-mail be replied into the account from which it has been sent and not to the outgoing server account only?
    Ciao
    Gianluca

I only have ONE Gmail account, and it shows the right info in the incoming/outgoing servers info.
I think the problem is my account was setup with account A before, when I used gmail with custom domain. Now I probably changed the inbox preferences to setup a new account B, keeping gmail servers and pop info, rather than creating a new account… but it seems the "reply to" or "return-path" lines are setup at acct creation, because I CAN'T CHANGE IT, and all emails are set to be replied to the OLD address. It's been months, and I freak out just thinking how many emails didn't go through from my recipient. (Account A no longer exists)
Where do I change that in Mail without having to create a new account?
Is there any inbox number the recipient's server is identifying to assign the return-path value? (Something in my account preferences didn't change, and it's either being sent or recognized as the previous account.

  • I cannot send my mail unless it is the mac account

Now.. I can send it through my microsoft entourage... but the mail account pre installed in my macbook won't send it with the other accounts I'd added. Any ideas?

I'm sorry I don't have a clear understanding of the problem. Can you explain again.
    What is the mac account?
What is the mail account pre nstalled in your macbook?
If you use Entourage you can send mail but if you use the Mail program it does not work?
What are the other accounts you've added?

  • "Mail cannot connect to the google account "Google"."

Hi, I recently updated my computer to Mavericks 10.9.1 and after doing this the mail application on the dock does not let me connect to my gmail account. The message "Mail can't connect to the google account "Google"." Then it asks me to enter my email password, which I know is correct. after this the window goes away but still won't connect to my email. I have tried deleting and setting back up my account and it still asks the same question. I looked up online for a solution and someone said to turn off the two step verification, but I don't know where to find that and I don't know if that is the actual problem. If anyone knows how to fix this please help me. Thanks

[Recommended: Backup your Mail folder by making a duplicate or copying to another location.]
If you have Gmail, be sure you have the All Mail folder selected to sync. Workarounds we previously used no longer work in Mavericks. You might need to go into your Gmail Settings in your browser to make the necessary changes.
    Use Gmail with Mavericks Mail
If deleting accounts fails to fix....
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
You can test Mail after deleting envelope files. When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
    If you still have problems....
Go to Containers in the User's Library folder.
    Delete the com.apple.mail folder.
Go to Preferences in the User's Library folder.
If you find any com.apple.mail.plist files, delete these.
Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar
    Log in
    Open Mail.

  • Mac Mail Outgoing SMTP Settings for Exchange account

I can't seem to get my Mac Mail client outgoing smtp settings correct. I am receiving fine but cannot send. My companies IT person does not have any Mac experience and has asked that I use webmail. Please help.

Thank you sooo much for getting back to me. I am back to trying to figure this out.
I have tried to set it up with the mentioned settings without success.
I think the problem is with the Outgoing Mail Server address that was given to me by the IT person - "webmail.outdoordimensions.com".
Typically, when setting accounts up, I have used an address respective to the web access provider - i.e. "smtp.att.yahoo.com". However, this "Exchange" account is something very new to me.
Thanks again for your help. Also what is "TLS-wrapped"? I didn't find a setting option for this.

  • Cannot find outgoing mail server (smtp) for my email account.

I am trying to set up my college email account and cannot find the smtp sever. I contacted IT at my school and they said they had no idea what I was talking about... I know that it uses microsoft outlook.. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could find the server. (I did however find the mailgate and entered my username and password)

    johnnyg713,
It sounds like your school might be utilizing an Exchange server. You may want to ask if it is possible to access the server via IMAP, and if so what to use for incoming and outgoing server settings.
This article has more information on setting up email on the iPhone:

  • Mail Won't Send from Account Selected

Having a real problem with Apple Mail. When using the From: account dropdown menu to select an account different from the default one, I expect that the recipient will receive the email as coming from that account. However, I just learned today that ALL email I send from Mail is using only the default account and completely ignoring whatever account I selected in the From: dropdown.
I also tried setting "Send new messages from:" to "Account Mailbox" in Mail Preferences, but, made no difference.
The exact same problem is happening on my partner's Macbook, who's running the same OS version I am: 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it? Thanks!
    Tom

I am also having the same problem that just started this morning. The mail is using my smtp server e-mail account from my serverice provider (Bell Canada) for all outgoing mail as the "From" and totally disregarding whatever e-mail account I select to send from. As I have 14 different e-mail accounts for different work activities, it is just not acceptable.
At first I thought it may be a problem with my service provider, but after 2 hours on the phone testing it with them, it is obvioulsy a system problem and not a server one. was there an update that changed something with the mail program??
I am also 24" iMac with 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running Mac OS X 10.6.8

  • Sending from the wrong account

I recently stopped using my comcast account in Mail, and started only using my .mac account. I removed the comcast account under preferences, but when I compose a message it still automatically selects [email protected] as the primary sender of the e-mail. I will usually not catch it and send the e-mail only to be rejected by the .mac smtp server. Then, I simply select the right address and send again without problem.
Is there anyway to get rid of the comcast option when I compose an e-mail where it will automatically send the message from my .mac address?

Go to Mail, then under Mail choose Preferences and see which account you have checked as the default email account.  Also, before you send an email, look to see which account the email is being sent from, that appears with the address information in the upper portion of the Mail window.  You can change the From account before sending if it is not what you want.

  • TS4002 I have two mail accounts.  One is called icloud and one is called Icloud.  How do I get rid of the Icloud account without removing the icloud account?

Under Mailboxes, there is a list:
         All Inboxes
         Icloud
         iCloud
         VIP
    Under Accounts
    @ Icloud
    (cloud symbol) iCloud
In Settings, there is only one (cloud symbol) account:  iCloud
Under Settings ==> Mail, Contacts, Calendars, there are two accounts.
iCloud is for Mail, Notes, Photos, find My iPad, Documents & Data
Icloud is only for Mail, Notes
I can turn mail off for the Icloud account.  If I turn off Notes, there is a warning:  All IMAP notes will be removed from you iPad.
I can turn off mail and notes for the iCloud account.  No problems
The Default Account for Notes is Icloud.
I have changed the Default Accounts for Notes to "On My iPad."   Still not able to turn of the notes in the Icloud Account.
And, now for something completely different!  The multiple mail box accounts do not show up in the Mail app.  There are still multiple accounts for notes.

I went to Notes.  Showed all notes.  Three notes are duplicated, one on iCloud and one on Icloud.  I deleted one of the notes and checked to see if the other still existed.  It did.  I deleted the other two notes.  I check all notes and found that the three notes were deleted on both accounts.  The only notes on this device are under On My iPad.
I went into system settings and tried to delete the Icloud account.  The warning comes up:  This will delete all IMAP notes on your device.  Will this also delete the notes in On My iPad?

  • Microsoft Windows 8 Mail App - Deleted Account still used as "From" Account

    Hi There,
My wife has a Surface RT that has been upgraded to 8.1. She has been happily using the mail app (Imap account), and indeed prefers it to the Surface version of Outlook. The other evening I added my own Imap account to the mail app, but then removed it again
as I prefer the outlook version. Now whenever she sends an email from the mail app, it is using my email address as the From account (can see this by clicking "more info" under the To box) even though the account is not there, which results in no
email being sent as there are no server details etc. on which to send it.
How can i change this so that it is only using my wife's account ?
Many thanks for any help you can give.
    Andrew.

  • Script to choose which account mail is to be sent from in Mail?

Does anyone have an AppleScript which will automatically set the default Mail account to an account chosen in script?
I use FileMaker to send mail automatically, but have to use Eudora because it makes it easy to auto reset the default account from which the mail to be sent before FileMaker actually sends the mail.
Mail always uses either the first account in list of accounts (if none chosen) or the chosen account if one is chosen. What I need is a script that "chooses the account" before I have FileMaker send mail.

Hello, I have a similar problem. When Thunderbird is set as the Default Email program in the Preferences (instead of Apple Mail) and when I click "send email" in Filemaker Tasks or Meetings, nothing happens. No email windows. No email programs started. Zippo. However, when Apple Mail is set as the default email program, then it works fine (aside from the fact that I lose all formatting from my message that exists in Filemaker). I find this annoying. Any ideas?
    Thanks, Jeff

  • Mail continues to download messages from delted email account

I deleted a Zimbra email account from Mail (Mail>preferences>followed steps for deleting the account), but Mail continues to download new messages from Zimbra. I ran mail connection doctor and the deleted account still appears with a green status indicator. This is the only evidence of the old account with the exception of the emails arriving in my Mail inbox. I would like to completely eliminate Mail's connection to the Zimbra account.
    Mail version 7.3
    OS X 10.9.5

Went to Preferences, clicked on the account in the left side menu, clicked the minus sign. Before deleting the account the computer toggled me to another window for managing Internet Accounts. I clicked the minus sign again for that same email account and the account no longer appears in my email account list.
Based on other posts about deleting an email account, I was expecting to see this prompt: "The account's setup information, mailboxes, messages, notes and to do's will be deleted permanently from your computer"
However, that prompt didn't appear. Instead I was directed to the Internet Accounts preferences pane as described above. While in Mail, if I go to preferences, the deleted account is not there and I do not have the option to send emails via the deleted account. The only functionality still enabled is the receipt of new messages.
