Mail tries to upload 159 emails that I don't have. Can I stop it?

It says that I have 159 emails so it loads and loads and loads. Occacionally it shows me a few, no more than seven (seven that I already deleted from my aol account and maybe one is actually a new one) so I go and try to delete them. It never works, because eventually I get sick of waiting and so I force quit it. Then the next time that I go and try to open it, again it shows me around seven emails some being old ones as it tries to open the 159 non-existant emails. Can I stop it from this and just make it get me the emails that I know I actually have? Please help. Thanks a lot in advance.
Trully,
Sarah B.

Hello Sarah.
Be patient and allow the synchronization process with the server complete.
Afterwards, open "In" in the mailboxes drawer to reveal your AOL account's Inbox mailbox.
Select the mailbox in the drawer and at the menu bar, go to Mailbox and select Rebuild.
The account's Inbox mailbox will be re-synchronized with the server and hopefully this will resolve the problem.
