Mail trying to use old keychain

When I first set up this machine, I tried not to use passwords. (I know...)
The keychain insisted on one, and I gave it one that I have since forgotten.
I used no system password or login password for this setup.
I have since seen the light and added password security for my machine.
The problem is that mail now insists on using the old (locked) keychain that was given when I did the first set-up. That old keychain is called "login." There aren't many passwords on it; and I have copied them to another keychain.
Would it be possible to:
1) Change the "login" keychain password without knowing it? (Keychain first aid seems to require the old password.)
2) Have mail and other applications refer to my new keychain as a default?
PowerBook G4, 4th gen Ipod, Panasonic CF-27   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Well, based on a few tests, my problem may be solved, though I can't be sure of the solution.
In addition to the advice from Boece, I may have been steered in the right direction when I had trouble synching my iPod through my external USB hub. (It was a problem installing an OS update on the device.) Apple's Support site suggested connecting directly to the Mac, and that did the trick.
So I tried the same thing with the scanner, and things are working now. BUT I also upgraded to Snow Leopard and then had to upgrade VueScan for compatibility with Snow Leopard, so it could have been a combination of things. But making the direct USB connection to the Mac was probably the key.
I still plan to try access through SANE but haven't had time to download the version compatible with 10.6.

I am trying to use old style figures for a school typology project. I can't find them. I think I might need a specific font, but I dont know what that would be.

Thanks!  I guess they were bored with having at the bottom for 10 years....
You will probably find that the typography panel in Pages 5 is kind of broken, you need to close it and reopen for each new font, and I think small caps and various other things do not work yet.

  • Trying to use old iPod as backup volume but it isn't recognized.

    Hello.
I am trying to use a 20GB iPod (generation 1) as the backup volume for Time Machine. I assume that I can designate which parts of my system for Time Machine to backup, such that the size of the iPod in relation to the size of my hard drive wouldn't matter.
I have enabled disk use on the iPod and stripped all the old files from it, but it does not appear in the Time Machine list.
Any help on how I can fix this? Perhaps a formatting issue?
    Thanks.

"Just keep in mind that it may void warranties."
Meaning for the iPod? I've had it for five years. I'm pretty sure it is worthless and uncovered by any warranty.
On the other hand, if you mean it might damage my computer somehow and void its coverage in the process, I will reconsider this option.
Thanks so much for your help.

  • Trying to use old HP Scanjet 6200C with Mini

I'm trying to use an old scanner that was never supported for Macs as far as I know.
When I connect it to a Windows computer, it seems to work.
When I connect it to my Mac Mini, it's reported as present on my USB 2.0 hub, the same hub that has a working printer. I've tried to access the scanner with SANE/TWAIN (with ImageCapture), VueScan, and ScanAgain. None of them can see it. But they do recognize and support a Canon MP620 printer/scanner which is defined on my wireless LAN.
Any ideas as to why none of these applications can access the scanner? If you have a suggestion for a different forum for this problem, that would also be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Trying to use old Iphone with IOS 3.1.3 as Ipod

My kids are trying to use an old Iphone Gen 1 as a Ipod.  We have successfully loaded music, but now of course they want games.  All games need a newer version of IOS.  Can I upgrade somehow?  Itunes says the IOS is up to date with no opportunity to upgrade.
    My kids will thank you!!!

Well they are apps and games in the app store which are supported with the iPhone 3G or iOS 3.1.3. Old games of course. BTW remove the sim so your kids cannot make phone calls and send SMS.

  • Issue trying to use old Mac Time Machine backup on new Mac

I've just got a new iMac 27" to replace my old 21" and am planning to restore files from the Time Machine backup I have. On the iMac 21" I used an external hard-drive connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station to back up using Time Machine. On the new Mac the external drive is connected directly to the USB port. The old machine is now about 10,000 miles away from me.
The issue I have is I cannot read the back-up from the old machine on the new.
During the first startup I tried to read from the Time Machine backup but the system told me I could not use it because it was from a different machine - it read all the back-up dates and let me chose, but did not allow to use it.
After startup was completed, I run a software update to make sure everything had the same version and tried Migration Assistant (with the HD still connected to the USB port), but the wheel keeps spinning not finding any disk.
I can read the .sparsebundle file on the external drive and I see it is intact. Disk Utility recognizes it and Status is Not mounted. When I try to open it with Disk Utility it says it is not mountable.
Any of you know how I can resolve this? I am thinking of a way of opening the file and reading it.
I really just need my music, my movies and my pictures, but I have 1.2T of that so it is not something I can download from the old Mac.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Mail won't use designated server for outgoing mail

My G4 abruptly started having problems sending mail through the bellsouth.net server. Even though the Mail preferences appear correctly set (I've been using them for several years and haven't changed any Mail settings), the problems started this past week.
I have two hunches: 1) the latest Security Update caused something to go wrong. 2) something happened when I traveled recently and used my primary drive (an external HD) with my host's iMac.
I have run Cocktail, Disk Warrior, rebuilt whatis, whois, locate databases.
Mail continues to try to use the .mac server for all my bellsouth.net outgoing mail; when the popdown warning appears stating that my message will not go through as addressed, the bellsouth server does not appear as one of the choices I could send the mail through. . .I'm baffled.
I dread calling Bellsouth tech support; they are generally blithering i*ts and not worth wasting my time on. They almost always refer me back for Mac support any time there's a problem.
Anyone want to take a crack at this? Thanks for your help.
    G4 dual 1-GHz MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Mail continues to try to use the .mac server for all
    my bellsouth.net outgoing mail
Not sure what you mean. Is it that Mail has problems using BellSouth's outgoing server, then asks you to choose another server and gives .Mac as the only choice? Or is it that Mail tries to use .Mac right away? Is BellSouth your ISP?
Mail keeps information about outgoing servers in a separate list, independently of any specific mail account. The account settings just associate one of the available outgoing servers with each account. Orphaned or dangling outgoing server entries (i.e. not associated with any account) sometimes cause sending problems.
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit Server List from the popup menu, and delete any servers that shouldn't be there (if any). The Edit Server List panel shows the account each outgoing server is associated with.
Also, please update your My Settings's profile (and click Save), so that it accurately displays the version of Mac OS X you're using.

  • Is it possible to use old Apple Flat Panel Display (62 watt power adapter) with MacBookPro 13" Mid-2012 running 10.8.4? Tried mini display to VGA cable

Is it possible to use old Apple Flat Panel Display (62 watt power adapter) with a MacBookPro 13" Mid-2012 laptop?  Would like to use larger screen when working at home.  I have a mini display port to VGA cable and have tried to hook up the old display but it seems not to work.  When I try to activate the screen on the old display-- a window comes up in the MacBookPro and asks me if I want to shut down the computer.  What little I have read it that the MacBookPro had Thunderbolt and the old display may not be compatible?  Any assistance would be appreciated.

    11.09.12 22:16:06,148 ClamXavSentry[286]: I will quarantine infected files
This doesn't have anything to do with your problem, but it will likely cause other issues with your e-mail.
Here's my standard recommendation concerting the use of A-V software to deal with potentially infected messages:
Never use ClamXav (or any other A-V software) to move (quarantine) or delete e-mail. It will corrupt the mailbox index which could cause loss of other e-mail and other issues with functions such as searching. It may also leave the original e-mail on your ISP's e-mail server and will be re-downloaded to your hard drive the next time you check for new mail.
So, if you choose to "Scan e-mail content for malware and phishing" in the General Preferences, make sure you do not elect to either Quarantine or Delete infected files.
When possibly infected e-mail files are found:
Right-click/Control-click on either the infection or file name in the ClamXav window.
Select "Reveal In Finder" from the pop-up menu.
When the window opens, double-click on the file to open the message in your e-mail client application.
Read the message and if you agree that it is junk/spam/phishing then use the e-mail client's delete button to delete it (this is especially important when the word "Heuristics" appears in the infection name).
If you disagree and choose to retain the message, return to ClamXav and choose "Exclude From Future Scans" from the pop-up menu.
If this is a g-mail account and those messages continue to show up after you have deleted them in the above manner, you may need to log in to webmail using your browser, go to the "All Mail" folder, find the message(s) and use the delete button there to permanently delete them from the server.
To fix the corrupted mailbox index(es), highlight each one that was corrupted and choose Rebuild from the appropriate menu.

  • Migration assistant on my old PB G4 freezes when trying to use it

Have looked for a solution to this for a few days now. I have tried to use the migration assistant to facilitate the change to my new Macbook Pro. However, each time I try to use it it freezes on the PB when it gets to the point where my ny MB searches for other macs to connect to (have tried to use a local network through ethernet as well as wireless). It doesn't respond and I have to force it to shut it down.
Could anyone advice on this? Would it just be better to copy all the content manually (a local network through ethernet works fine, without the assistant)? What I am afraid of is to loose data such as mail, ical, etc, i.e. the content I have not saved in specific places myself. It would also be nice to get this to work so that I could get the settings for all applications.
(and finally, I need to ask, how does it work with applications, can they just be moved even if I have not the .dmg-file? I know I need to uninstall some on the old mac because of licence issues.)

This user tip was written a while back but you can use it to restore important items to your users/Home directory.
Then, try transferring your apps via your wireless connection.
Do you have an external hard drive? It is always best to have you data backed up somewhere. Even if it's DVD.
EDIT: As far as moving the apps by dragging, don't. Some can be dragged, most cannot. You don't want to find out which the hard way

  • I'm trying to buy ebooks from app store.I've just used old one before w/no prob downloading apps.  Never had much luck trying to make these changes.

It keeps saying Invalid e-mail address.  Used new one & it says the same thing.  Have Had New e-mail address For 6 months, but it never synced in App store.   Have downloaded apps before using old address w/no problem.   I wanted these books download by tomorrow since I won't have access to Internet for a week.

That is priceless!!!  Thanks!  I sure needed a good laugh after spending/wasting hours & days trying to either get my c6280 to give up on its Ink System Failure fixation, or find a decent replacement.  Unfortunately I need the Smart Web Printing feature that I guess only HP has, or I'd try a different brand. And now even HP has very few models with that available.
My error msg is a little different from those previously stated, but close:  0xc18a0201.  Even tho there were frustrations with my c6280, I did like several of its unique features which are hard to find now under $100.  I hate how HP (& I suppose other brands also) are CONSTANTLY changing models & then of course ink cartridges.
Oh heavens, I've had the c6280 a whopping 2 1/2 years!   I'm sure they want us poor slobs to have to buy a new one every year & a day!  To say nothing of the exorbitant prices for ink.  And now if this one is really dead in the water, I have SIX unused #02 ink cartridges which I cannot return---I got them in a combo pack, & for some reason have wound up with THREE lite pink & THREE lite blue cartridges, while having to buy extras of the other colors, that ran out before the others!!!   Yeah, & what's with that not being able to print in BLACK if a color runs out????
Anyway I really loved your essay!   It's a classic!  And says it all!  I hate that we have to be 'slaves' to the electronic 'wonders'!!!

  • Keychain still uses old apple id

I'm trying to setup my keychain and my old apple id hotmail address comes up instead of my current apple id address. i've updated all of my devices and i'm really frustrated that this hasn't changed yet. help!!!

Sign out of iCloud on the iCloud system prefs. Then, sign in with your new.
However, purchases from iTunes and the Mac App store are forever tied to the old AppleID. There is no way to change that short of deleting the old purchases and purchasing new under the new AppleID.
Based on everything that has happened lately with people using social engineering to gain access to other people’s AppleID’s, you need to speak to someone at Apple regarding your account. If you think you knew the answers to your questions and you are not getting emails anymore, someone may have gained access to your old account and has changed all of that info.

You can log out of the currently logged in account by taping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and you can then log back in.
If you updated your existing account with a new email address then that shoud 'refresh' it on it
If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can redownload its content and download updates to its apps. You should be able to update an account's email address via this page : http://appleid.apple.com

  • Can anyone tell me why I can't update my itunes on my p.c?  I get a message saying: the feature you are trying to use is on a net work resource that is unavailable.   Tried uploading from websit, get msg can't delete old version.

    I need some serious help!
I have been trying to update my itunes to version 10.7 and my Quicktime to version 7.7.3!
    Having no luck!
So I tried selecting repair software on all of the Apple applications and they seem to have worked.
Then I selected look for upgrades on my itunes (Help) main screen
It said their were two updates -   Itunes  10.7   and  Quicktime 7.7.3
I selected the option to update and the .exe files were loaded to my  Windows 7 p.c.
However after part of the Itune update completed a message came up on the screen
saying   "The feature you are trying to use is on a net work resource that is unavailable.
    O.k.
I then went to the itunes website and tried again.  This time it checked my system the process seemed to be working and all of a sudden I got a message saying my old itunes programs could not be removed and or deleted.  So I tried to delete my old version myself without success it won't let me.
I've run out of options and am not completely fustrated.
I have itunes on my desktop, my iphone4, my ipod and in my car.
Anyone have any clue how I can resolve this problem?
