Mail turning messages into attachments

Hello. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere - I couldn't find any related discussions.
Seemingly since my last update - to 10.6.2 - mail is doing something weird... Emails - particularly ones with attachments in them - are arriving in my inbox with the text part of the email message that follows an attachment (like an inline graphic) converted to an attachment - "ATT00001.htm". Additionally, if the email was a reply, then the included original text is another attachment - "ATT00002.htm".
It appears the emails are truncated... I've been ignoring those pesky attachments!
Additional info: using hosted exchange as my email server. Experiencing the problem when receiving mail from others in my company.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
w.

I just started to notice this after someone replied to a message I sent them. Look through my sent pile, I've probably been confusing a lot of people over the last few months with random attachments. After a bit of troubleshooting I've come up with a workaround.
Any message body after an attachment gets converted to the ATT0000X.htm, so the workaround is to ensure all your attachments are placed inline at the end of your message -- even after your signature lines.
If you want to test yourself, place an attachement in the middle of your signature and watch the first half of your signature show up, while the second half ends up in a "ATT0000X.htm" file.
This isn't a problem in the receiving mail reader, but a problem in the way mail is composing the message.

  • Mail signatures change into attachments, why?

I recently switched my email accounts from POP to IMAP and all of a sudden, sometimes my signatures are getting converted into attachments after I send the message. The attachments get titles such as ATT00001.txt. I am using Mac Mail. It happens with my work account. I also have an iphone and use mobile me to synch it with three other intel macs. But this happens without any involvement of AT&T and my iPhone.

I was having this same problem today, and I figured out what is happening.
When you send an attachment to Microsoft Outlook, the way that it handles rich text causes issues when you put the attachment icon in the body of the email.
I noticed that it only happens with non-image files. So .doc, .docx, etc. It doesn't cause problems when attaching .jpg or .pdf.
Any text that is located AFTER the icon you've attached is converted to ATT00001.txt when opened in Outlook. (and maybe other programs, I'm not sure)
The way to fix this is either:
    1) drag or place the icon to the very end of the email, (including after the signature) OR
    2) Go to the "Edit->Attachment" menu and check "Insert attachments at end of message."
Note, with option 2, you can set it as your default, thus not worrying about it.
The only issue is that when sending messages to other mac users, you can't have attachment icons show up in the middle of the email body.

  • Default to "view as icon" in Mail.app messages (with attachments)

    Hello,
Other than using Mail Attachments Iconizer (http://lokiware.info/Mail-Attachments-Iconizer), does anyone know of a way to default mail.app to "view as icon" when adding attachments to messages?
Working in print design, we're always sending PDFs and images and it's a little annoying when you have a large (in dimension, not bit size) attachment and it just takes over your message.
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

    Hello!
    Your English is great.
There is no default setting for this in Mail but check Mail Attachments Iconizer.

  • Mail turning PDFs into HTLM/gibberish

Hello all! Yesterday when sending emails with PDF attachments from Mail, the recipient informed me that the PDFs didn't come through correctly and looked like random letters and numbers when opened for him. I'm having the same problem when I look in the Sent folder of Mail on my iPhone. Has anyone experienced this? I did get a new iMac yesterday and migrated from an old computer to the new, not sure if that would have an impact on this problem or not. I appreciate any help!

Next question: Who comes up with these glitches after
things have been working so smoothly before?
Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic have been causing these problems for years. They do not come with OS X or with any Apple apps, so what happens is that a user installs them for some reason and then suddenly things don't work right. I have never been able to figure out just what app it is that users download which gets these fonts into their system. If you have any idea where they came from, it would be very useful info to have.

  • Controlling which display Mail opens messages into

I am a teacher. When using an alternate display, Apple software in general, and Apple Mail specifically, tends to open in the alternate display. So if i am working on my regular display screen and showing something to my class on the alternate display screen, Mail opens the new message in the alternate display, over top of the movie or whatever the class is seeing.
There should be a preference to control this. At least Safari follows the pattern where is the current window.
    Is there a fix?
Do Apple Mail software designers read this forum?

I remembered the "Force Quit" option, that worked. Disregard, no other response necessary. Thanks.

  • Me Mail turning itself into Gmail

Hi. I have used Apple mail happily for years, though I have also colected some other e-mail addresses along the way, e.g. from O2 my ISP, a business domain and GMail as part of using Google.
So, here's a weird thing: in the last few days, messages sent by me from my usual, default me.com address have been arriving at their destination as if from my Googlemail address.
Literally I can look at the header of a messgae and it's definitely from <[email protected]> and when it arrives it says it's from <[email protected]>. That's for recipients on OSX or PC's, whatever.
Has anyone any idea how this is even possible? And /or how to stop it happening?
    Rgds

When you send a message from one account using a gmail server, the default setup in gmail will show the gmail address. That's normal behavior when using a gmail server to send a message from a different account.
You can change this behavior at the gmail website to show the correct account when you use the gmail server from a different account.
This isn't your original problem, but it answers part of your question. If you have the correct server for the account, it should have sent from that account unless it couldn't get through and changed it. By selecting only that server, if it fails, you should get a message to use a different server.

  • Mail message with attachments

I use iMacs for work.  I often send email messages with attachments using Mail.  Often, when sending email messages to Windows users (they are out there still), they will reply that they cannot open "the second attachment."  The message seems to "pick up" a second apparent attachment, which is generally just a few K in size, and is not part of the original message or attachment.  Unfortunately, though, it tricks the recipient into thinking that there are two attachments and the second one is meaningful  So then they respond and I have to assure them that the second attachment is irrelevant and can be ignored.
Any thoughts on how to fix this, so outgoing email messages will only present the intended attachment?

That's a great question.  I do use a signature, but inasmuch as it is simply text pre-inserted in the email message, I would be surprised if the signature somehow became stripped out and converted to an attachment. Nonetheless, I will try deleting the signature to see if that makes any difference.

  • How can I automatically open Mail.app message attachments after downloading

The subject says it all, I think.
    My wish #1
Automatically Opening Mail.app message attachments after downloading
    My Wish #2
At least having the Finder automatically default to the folder I just downloaded to after completing the download.
Is this an option in Leopard, at least?

Very clever. But unfortunately that doesn't seem to work in Tiger.
Then again, I stil presume that when you do that, a ile is still downloaded and appears somewhere on your hard drive. If you "save as" the file opened by preview, you probably still need to go back to the place where the file was saved and delete it.
Then again again, if Preview is peeking into a Word or Excel attachment, it may not actually be "downloading it" first?? Strange. If it was a jpg file attachment, on the other hand, it seems more likely that some sort of file would be downloaded to the hard drive as a result of that drag and drop of the paper clip.
I did find that drag and drop capability interesting, though. Even in Tiger.
Oh well. I have to start looking at scripts.
When I downloaded that Automator application that was supposed to "close all open applications", I was surprised that it didn't work. Says it works with TIger. ???
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/
Was I supposed to import it into Automator as an "action" and save it as an Automator application and then open Automator and click "run" for that action each time I wanted to use it? Seams a bit cumbersome.

  • Mail crashes on opening any message with attachments

mail crashes on opening any message with attachments
this started happening about a month ago. I thought the problem was that there was too much mail in the program -
so, I acquired a program called MAILSTEWARD (which I recommend!) and it stores & saves my old mail.
I reset MAIL, so it kept my address and smart folder instructions etc, but all the mail itself was gone (I forget how I did that - I probably will try it again...)
for a few weeks, everything was fine - I could open an eMail with an attachment, and it worked.
but now it started crashing again everytime there's an attachment!
don't know what to do - there's only a month's worth of mail in there (which I should clean out anyhow) - but it seems to me that's not too much...
    thanks!
    w

that's it - I ran the updater - and I believe I have been able to use it all day without the program crashing when it encounters an attachment.
one goofy thing I noticed, for the first time, there appear to be two applications folders on my start-up drive (1) in my user folder (2) in the "main" hard drive folder.
MAIL is in both - I believe the "main" one was updated; when I turned on the "user" MAIL it crashed when I opened an eMail with an attachment; when I opened the same eMail with the "main" mail there was no problem.
now what does this tell us?
    thanks again!
    will

  • Is it possible to import messages into Mail that are in .csv format?

Just in case my previous topic subject was preventing some folks from checking this out, I'lll try to ask my question in a more generic way.
I have an archive of a mailbox from another email program that I'm trying to move over to Apple Mail. My archive is saved as a .csv file. I can open the file in either Numbers, Excel, or TextEdit, and I can see that all the info is there. However, I want to be able to import these into Mail so that I can integrate these old messages with my other emails. I would want to be able to search for these messages using Mail's search tools and be able to identify messages based on who they're from, the subject line, date received, etc.
Specifically, this archive was exported out of Earthlink Total Access. My only options out of Earthlink were to export out as either .csv or a proprietary .dat file. I'm trying to figure out how to get the .csv file into Mail. I tried going through Entourage, but Entourage only imports contacts from a .csv file and not messages. I found a Unix utility that coverts a .csv to an mbox file (which Entourage would be able to import), but I'm not sure how to get it to work (I'm not that swift with Unix).
    http://membled.com/work/apps/outlooktext_tombox/
    Any brilliant ideas?

I too am trying to transfer Total Access messages into Mail and have stumbled at every attempt to use other software, such as Entourage and OE, as intermediaries. I would love to hear if you get any response to this question. I was able to transfer all the addresses, but not the messages.

  • Mail  - Uintended Saved Messages and Attachments in .imapmbox

+Why do I have thousands of documents (messages and attachments) from past years stored in folders with suffix .imapmbox?+
Time Machine quit backing up because of insufficient space on my external drive. Searching for an answer, I found (and deleted) a few thousand files dating back a couple of years: nearly 150gb of old messages, images, movies, and documents that I did not know were stored. Many were stored multiple times. Most were at the locations:
    Macintosh HD => Users => (Username) => Library => Mail => Mac (Username) => Deleted Messages.imapmbox => Attachments
. . . and similarly with the last folder in the sequence being "Messages." : Sent Messages.imapmbox =>
The situation also occurred with "Sent Messages.imapmbox" having hundreds of Messages and Attachments.
I had no knowledge of these being on my HD because when (in Mail) I clicked on "Sent" and "Trash On My Mac" I saw relatively few files only the ones I expected, given the selections I made in Preferences.
In Mail Preferences for "Sent" I have checked store on server and delete when one month old.
For Trash I have checked moved deleted messages to Trash mailbox and store deleted messages on server. Also, "Permanently delete messages when one week old."
In Preferences - General, I had selected "Remove Unedited Downloads: After message is deleted."
I do want email downloaded to the Mac HD to read offline, why do they get stored embedded out of sight (and previously out of mind) down in those .imapmbox locations?

No, you can't emulate that feature. But you can just compose your message and when you're done, press Return at least 3 times and attach your file there; that will make the attachment be at the end of the message (such as an image), or appear separately as an attachment in the message header when the recipient opens it.

  • Drag and drop multiple mail messages into finder

I am trying to move multiple mail messages into finder folders for organization and filing purposes.  I know it will save these as mail files but that is what I would like anyway.  It lets me drag and drop one message at a time but does not let me do it for multiple messages at a time.  Does anybody know how to do this?

You might consider using the "Archive" capability of Mail.  Look at Archive in Mail Help.

  • Unable to move message into new folder in Mail 3.1

    Hi
I just added a new folder in Mail, but cannot move a message from my inbox (IMAP) into it. I can move messages into other, older folders, but not into any folders I created today. This is happening with both local and IMAP folders created today.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    D

    Okay, here's what I find:
    My home directory: drwxr-xr-x+ owner=me
    ~/Library: drwx------+ owner=me
    ~/Library/Mail: drwx------ owner=me
    Continue to the local mailboxes:
    ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes: drwx------ owner=me
    ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/(top-most level): drwx------ owner=me
    ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/(top-most)/(next level): drwx------ owner=me
That gets us to the info I gave previously, which I already fixed using chown.
If we continue to the +remote (IMAP)+ mailbox:
    ~/Library/Mail/(imap account): drwx------ owner=me
    ~/Library/Mail/(imap account)/INBOX: drwx------ owner=me
And that again brings us to the level where the original problem was (and the individual directory that I have corrected using chown.)
So I can fix each directory individually using chown, but I'd like to fix the cause.
    Thanks!

  • E-mail messages into folders

I created two folders and now would like to move e-mail messages into them - I can't seem to accomplish this . . . is it possible?  Thanks in advance.

Ah...OK...so what you are asking to do is not possible...a folder on your homescreen is not a destination for an email that you want to file. Rather, there is the capability to file messages away within the Messages folder hierarchy. With a message list displayed, press the BBKey and select View Folders...now you will see all of the folders that presently exist. I'm not sure if you even can create any new ones, but these are there. It may be that you must create the folder elsewhere (BES if you have it, perhaps the Desktop Software can help for non-BES,  but definitely not BIS I think). • Import RSS Messages into Mail

I've just clean installed my OS but in Apple Mail I had a few RSS Subscriptions with a number of messages in each. I've had a look Library > Mail > RSS folder and all of my feeds are still in there but they are in folders with a . rssmbox extension and I'm unable to import these into Mail.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, couldn't figure out how to do this automatically so what I ended up doing was logging into my backup and opening Mail. Then dragging all of the RSS messages I wanted to keep in to a new Mailbox. Then logging out - opening up my newly created Mac and opening Mail. Then import the Mailbox and drag those messages into the RSS feed. A bit long-winded but hey, they're all there now... Phew!
