Mail: typing my own email address in composition window PROBLEM

This is a weird problem which arose in the last few weeks. When I type my own email address in a composition window, Mail will add a bunch of HTTP like text to the text. Here is an example in which I have changed my real address to a fake one:
This is my email mail@http://www.http://www.http://www.fakedomain.comcomcomcom.
This does NOT happen with any other addresses, just mine, which is the same address setup in my accounts. If I try using the delete key to remove the faulty text, it just keeps adding more of the same. ***? I'm perplexed.
Any ideas?
Mail version 4.2 (1077)
OS 10.6.2

The following test might be helpful in deciding what to try next: Create a New User Account, and as that New User try to set up at least one account -- if POP set to leave messages on the server. If not familiar with setting up a New User Account, see:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
This will be a useful test to now check this behavior in another User Account, and of course is not meant to suggest a permanent switch to the New User Account, but rather a test of the Mail application outside of your normal User Account, and hopefully outside the use of Mail Unread. You could then set that User up to use Mail Unread, and see if the same happens there.

Do you have Pop or IMAP mail account?

When you say 'When emails are sent from ipad to own address', are these emails sent via webmail or Thunderbird?

Apple Mail in Yosmite includes my own email address when I reply to all.
I can't remember Mavericks or before used to do this.
Anyway, is there a way to turn this off?

Same here. I have three seperate mail accounts and when I reply to the emails within their respective inboxes everything is fine. But if its a message that is moved out of the inbox because a rule has been applied, then all bets are off. If I reply to one of those messages it cc's me and does not "Send from the Account of the selected mailbox.

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)
    http://apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

  • Why am I able to receive an email from my own email address that I never sent?

I get email in my inbox that sends it to my junk email folder sent from my own email address that I never wrote or sent. It is junk mail and I want to stop it, I see no way to stop email with unwanted words like you could in windows xp.

Spammers can forge any "from" name and address they like on a message. Since most users don't block mail sent by themselves, they hope to slip past your spam filter this way.
Unless you see these items in your Sent Items folder, or they list multiple people from your address book, most likely they are not connected to your email account.
That said, it's a good idea to scan your computer for malware, because many users unknowingly get recruited into spamming rings (a bot program on your computer takes commands from the botnet coordinator and sends out the spam, usually without any visible indication). This article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].

  • I am receiving spam emails from my own email address and need to put a stop to it asap please.

Hi as per above, for the last week I have been receiving spam emails from my own email address. Can anyone help me please to put a stop to this and also perhaps explain how it happened? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

'''but not sure what you mean when you say I must not store it on my computer?'''
I was just thinking that if someone or some software agent is accessing your computer then they also have access to saved passwords if for instance it is webmail and the password is stored on Firefox, or if you store logins and passwords in any other utility.
'''I have asked my service provider again for help - waiting to hear from them. I don't store passwords in any other utility that I know of? Are passwords stored automatically somewhere on computers?'''
An obvious thing to do is also make sure you log out of email and do not leave yourself logged in or use the remember me option.
'''Yes, thank you, I always log out and never use the remember me option'''
'''Thank you for your input. I did report this to my service provider and they assured me that no one is accessing my account?
I wonder what they meant by that
possibly that the account has been accessed only from your computer and the same IP Address has been shown
Maybe just that the mail used your login and password.
'''I have asked them to verify the above - thank you. :)'''
What are the emails ? do they make sense, are they also sent to others ? and of course is it likely anyone else is using your computer and sending these emails.
'''The emails make some sort of sense but not much. As far as I know I am the only one receiving them but just to be safe I deleted my Address Book. No one else has access to my computer - I am the only one who uses it. :(('''
it is probably worth contacting them again, give a couple of examples of the emails you are referring to and tell them that you yourself did not type those emails. Ask if they can explain how this may have happened.
'''Done and awaiting their response. :) Thank you'''
As a general security measure it is also good practice
to use a limited user account for day to day work not an admin account
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/windows_security_whynot_admin.mspx
to set passwords up to login to your computer
'''what is a limited user account? Also, I am now busy adding a password to my computer and making all files private through User Accounts. Would that help do you think?'''
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/usercpl_create_password.mspx
(IIRC at one time by default XP setup an Administration account with a nul default password, an F8 reboot would get you in by just using the return key when the password prompt showed ) P.S. as mentioned method 3 in this article http://www.slideshare.net/passexpert/six-methods-to-crack-windows-admin-password-remove-unknown-windows-admin-password. Rather a serious security hole.
'''"oooh, sorry, the above paragraph is way past my limited knowledge? Will read the article again and get back to you. Thank you so much for your help so far. :)'''

  • Stop spams "sent from" my own email address

    Hello guys,
I really need you help with stoping spams sent from my own email address. First, I thought my account had been hacked, then I quickly realized it was just a modified header after a little research online. But still, it doesn't mean there is nothing to worry about. I use mountain lion for home and icloud as my primary email account (which was spamed). I sniffed around apple mail settings for 20 mins- specially under "junk mail" and "rules"- but I couldn't find a way to stop these crazy spams without listing my own email account as junk. I don't want to list mylist on junk list, because it will make me such a loser... Somebody please help me to configure my apple mail so it will seperate spams from the emails I send to myself. Is it even possible, or do I need to use alternatives? Please help. Thank you in advance.

Thank you, Barney. I uploaded a screenshot. I don't know how to show names in the header. The name spammed by the junk mail is "katie", while my own name is "XX song". But the address is same for the different sender names. How is it possible? Is there a way to filter them by sender names, but not the email address?

Every Apple empoyees, normally do get an e-mail address with Apple domain.
So this means that you could receive one like for example: [[email protected]].

No, you cannot use your own email address with iCloud. However you can use your own email address as a separate account by entering the account details in the mail application.

  • Someone is using my personal email address for their apple ID and I'm sick of it! I can't sign up for my own itunes account or anything using MY OWN email address. My email address is my property, not theirs.

Someone is using my personal email address for their apple ID and I'm sick of it! I can't sign up for my own itunes account or anything using MY OWN email address. My email address is my property, not theirs.
I'm using their account and will continue to reset their password and settings until they either get the message or Apple do something about it and disable or migrate their account so that I can use MY OWN email address for my own purposes.
I don't want to be informed about Apple products and services for someone else on my email account.
I want to be able to use it MYSELF for iTunes
All I am asking you to do is migrate their apple ID to their alternate email account settings and free up my email address so that:
    A. I can use it and B. I stop getting messages about their account history.
Either that or just cancel their account as they have no right to use my personal details.
Yes I could set up a new email address but WHY THE **** should I? I've been using this email account for years for personal stuff, it's not mu fault if someone can sign it up as an AppleID without me being able to confirm their sign up process!
Your move Apple, make it count.

    Hi Sister Kate,
If you change the Apple ID you are using on an iPhone or other iOS device, there are several places you need to change it on the device. See this article -

  • My wife and I share an Ipad.   We each have our own email address and calendar.   What is the best way for us to backup both accounts (we currently only have 1 ICloud account)?   Thanks for any help!    Alan

My wife and I each have our own email address and calendar.  These are on one IPad.   The Ipad has a single ICloud account.
What's the best way to backup both Calendars, etc?   Does ICloud automatically back up every account on the same IPad?  (I checked ICloud, but I could only find my stuff.)
    Thanks for any help!
    Alan

First, you need to understand that there's a difference between "syncing" and "backup".  Backup is the saving of content and settings, where syncing is the bidirectional transfer of content for an account to a web-based server (like iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)
If you see your calendar in your iCloud account, that implies that you have set up your iCloud account to host (sync) your calendar, and perhaps contacts, email, and notes.  An iCloud account can only sync one user's information at a time so it is intended to support a single user.  You can have more than one iCloud account, and you can even have more than one iCloud account on the same device (but one has to be primary, and the secondary iCloud has limited capabilities), but a single iCloud account only supports a single user's content.
Backup is the saving of your device's content and settings to use in case you need to recover these things, but you can't see the contents of your backup (just the size and device name).  You can backup more than one device to iCloud and you can backup to iCloud or you can backup to your computer, or both (one at a time though, you have to choose).
So, if your wife has her own email and calendar she can certainly do that in parallel to whatever account(s) you have for email and calendar.  But if you have only one iCloud account then only one of you can use it for email, calendar, etc.  But the backup of these accounts is really just a backup of the device's settings that link the device to these accounts. For example, if she uses Gmail then the backup of the iPad only backs up the fact that your iPad is set up to use her account, it does not backup the account itself (the content of her account is saved and preserved on Google's servers, not your device's backup).
    Does that make better sense?

Automatically cc myself is not checked.  I did find out that if you have multiple email address that all of them need to be associated with "My Contact" tab.  Thanks
