Mail unexpectedly closes when message has attachment

when i open the application, it's all ok, but if i try to preview or open a message that has attachments it quits unexpectedly.

I have exactly the same problem and have sent reports back to Apple many times in the past week. Every time I try to preview or open an attachment Mail quits. The error message is:

I didn't have another mail programme as you suggested this might be a cause - though obviously I do now!
I checked Frameworks etc and all (I'm not an expert - understatement!) seems to be OK. I've reinstalled from original Leopard disc: zilch.
Reinstalled the combo to 10.5.7: nothing.
Reinstalled Java from Apple website: No result.
Repaired permissions (about 5 times) and repaired disc in Disc Utility.
I also have a similar problem with opening Safari:

Again it's Java.
I'm now using Gmail in Firefox which is a nuisance as I've always liked both Mail and Safari. Until now. It seems to have begun after the last system update, but reinstalling etc has made no difference. Attachments open normally in Firefox/Gmail.

Mail unexpectedly quits when I try to open the Mail Application 4.5.
Any ideas how to resolve this?
I have tried the suggestions already given on Lists, and nothing has yet worked...

    10.6.8 is not Mountain Lion.
How big is your hard drive, and how full is it?
Did you happen to download any system cache cleaners?  Those can damage its ability to function.
    Have you tried repairing permissions?
    Is your data backed up?
    Is Spotlight indexed?
Is the Mail trying to load an IMAP, POP or Exchange account?

mail app closes when not used for a while how fix?

This may also be due to the Sudden Termination feature built into OS X, which will effectively quit a process if the system is demanding resources. Mail can be a RAM hog at times, and if your system only has a few GB of RAM, then when other programs demand more and you have not been using Mail then the system will invoke Sudden Termination to quit it so more RAM is available elsewhere.
Do you have only ~2-4GB of RAM in your system? Check for this in the About This Mac option in the Apple menu, and if so then consider upgrading to more if your system supports it. Alternatively you can try quitting other applications to free up more RAM.
To see which programs are using the most RAM, open the Activity Monitor utility and choose My Processes from the drop-down menu. Then ensure Real Memory is checked in the View > Columns menu, and click this menu's title to sort the items by it.
Keep in mind that sudden termination does not fully quit the program, so Mail may still show up in Activity Monitor when you open it even though it may be closed from the Dock.

  • HT5934 With the new ios7 my every time I receive hotmail it shows all mail as unread when it has already been read

With the new ios7 my every time I receive hotmail it shows all mail as unread when it has already been read

I have the same issue with a non-hotmail POP3 mail account. Must be a bug in iOS7 as it worked without a problem in iOS6.
The funny thing is that if you select "Edit (upper right corner of the screen)/Mark All" there is no "Mark as read" choice here, it reads "Mark as unread". So the built-in Mail app knows that the messages has been read. (Note that I use a non-English iOS language setting, so the actual labels may differ).
And the next funny thing is that only the really unread mails (new ones) are marked with the ussual blue dot.
I have already sent a feedback to Apple about it.

  • Mail freezes if a message has an attachment: help!!

I just upgraded my G4 imac to an intel imac last week. So far so good, until yesterday, when Mail started acting up. It is to the point that I have to use the webmail version.
When I launch the program, and have new messages, I click on them. But if the message has an attachment (which my spam messages often do), when I click them (even single click- just to select them so I can delete them)- Mail totally freezes and I have to quit the app. And the hard drive makes a lot of scary loud noise. I have never experienced anything like this before, and am not sure what to make of it. If the message does not have an attachment, it seems to work just fine. But so as it is, I just can't select the messages with attachments. B/c as soon as I do, the app is useless and frozen and I have to quit, sometimes even force-quit.
    Help!!
    Thanks.

    You’re welcome.
You really should either erase the disk and restore from a backup or repair it with a disk utility. If you keep using the computer under those conditions, things can only get worse and you may soon start experiencing frequent crashes or even data loss...
I don’t know much about third-party disk repair utilities because I’ve never used anything other than Disk Utility myself. The best disk repair utility is a good backup, which everybody should have anyway. If I ever encounter a problem that Disk Utility cannot fix, I just erase the disk and restore from a backup.
Assuming the version of Disk Warrior you have supports Mac OS X 10.4 (which I don’t really know) and the problem is just that you cannot use it to boot an Intel-based Mac, if you have access to a PowerPC-based Mac with Mac OS X 10.4 installed, I believe you should be able to repair the disk by connecting the Intel-based Mac in Target Disk Mode to the PowerPC-based Mac.

  • Can't send mail to POP Account which has attachment or signature

Since installing the Update 10.4.6, I have been unable to send email to my pop account which has either a signature or an attachment (when there is no attachment or signature it works fine). I have cleared the caches using tiger cache cleaner. I have tried adding a new user account to mail. It doesn't work in Entourage either. I've reinstalled Mail. What else do you recommend?
Prior to installing the update, mail worked great for over a year!
    Additional Information:
Whenever I press the send icon, the mail message disappears, then in the activity viewer it gives the message “Delivering message / Sending data (28% done) and hangs there for a long time and finally gives the following message:
Cannot send message using the server XXX
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
Whenever I send an email with text and a signature, the activity viewer it gives the message “Delivering message / Sending data (100% done) and hangs there for an extremely long time and finally gives the same message.

    Mario_MM wrote:
For sending mail the POP server is not important what you need to check are the settings of the SMTP server. Verify the settings of the SMTP server again and compare it to your settings on your iMac.
Checked SMTP settings and they are identical to the working iMac. I had not changed any settings on my MBP when it stopped sending, plus it did work briefly last night with those settings, so I don't see how it could have anything to do with my settings being incorrect.
The only thing even remotely different that I did prior to this happening was to use it away from home. I was out of town and used someone else's wifi to send some emails, but can't see how that should matter. It was the same ISP that I use at home, so I never even had to change settings for remote access. I never touched a thing, but when I got home I could no longer send emails.

  • Mail App Hangs when trying to attach images

My Mail App (Leopard) keeps hanging (spinning ball) forcing me to force quit whenever I try to attach an image from my Images folder, if I do it through iPhoto it's fine but trying to attach manually it hangs everytime.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

My Mail App (Leopard) hangs when I try to send eMail from iPhoto 5.0.4. I select the images I want in iPhoto then click eMail and Leopard Mail opens a new message then I get the rainbow of death and the image is never pulled in... Mail hangs until I force quit

  • Mail unexpectedly quits when trying to get mail

Please help me, the person at the genius bar was useless. My mail unexpectedly quits only when trying to get mail. I have repaired permissions, and I did an archive reinstall (at the recommendation of the genius). Nothing I seem to do works, even when I removed the envelop index and started mail after getting re setup it just crashed again.

Hi CurtRK, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You mention the envelope, but how about the Cache, and doing it like this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move the following folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Mail app closes when trying to send email

I can receive mail ok, but when I try to send, it just closes the mail app and goes back to the home page.
Any suggestions how I can get the mail app working properly again?
    Thanks

Ah, yes... a common problem.  Relaying is when you are using email service A to send mail through, but your "from" address is another service.  Service A, if it's set up for this, will reject your email because you are trying to relay the email through them from an email address that is not theirs.  This is to prevent spammers from using their service even though they don't have an account with them.
I suspect the service you are sending to is one on which you have a valid account, but you're sending "from" another address.  In such cases the relaying service may allow you to specify, in your email settings, your account and password, in which case it will accept your email and pass it through.

  • Mail windows close when link accessed

When I click on a link in an email all Mail windows close and the link opens in Safari. How do I make it not close the Mail windows?

    Hi,
Does it fix your problem when you log on to another computer? 2 Weeks ago I had exactly the same problem. Helpdesk said it had something to do with my profile. They asked me to first log off from the computer the error occurred, then they told me to log off from the computer which was working fine. Apparantly, the helpdesk did something to my profile next (reset or initialize?). When I logged on to the computer which was causing the problem, the problem was solved....
Sorry I cannot give you any concrete info on what the helpdesk did... But that's what did it for me...
Hope your problem is solved soon!

  • Mail unexpectedly quitting when view certain certain senders messages

    Ok...
so i'm send this question in for my boss in our print shop. He made me aware of a mail problem that has been reoccuring this morning.
    1. when viewing just a few sender's emails (Alabama Power, Heidelberg, and a sign co. we use) from any box...whether it be the trash or inbox, when moving the preview panel pane up to preview over a long list of emails, as soon as "The movable Bar" hits a certain point between the list and preview it automatically or unexpectedly quits? This also happens on just a certain few websites, that arent realted to the emailers that are causing the crash. WEIRD STUFF *Sory for run-on sentences..lol*
My first thought was the images that are on the actual body of the email, but, when double clicking into a new window instead of using the preview pane it works fine, and even sometimes when it crashes, there arent any images to load on the email
    His computers specs
OSX.5.6, White-Macbook, Intel Core Duo processor(2.) and 2 gigs of ram
He has been having to just deal with the issue (because he hasnt voiced the issue till today), and does a work around by fowarding the emails to his iMac running the same OS to be able to get preview these emails
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks
Drew (disregard my specs at bottom)

Ok...ive found out a little bit more about the emails that are causing the crashing!
    1. Heildelberg (email) - Its an advertisement email, and dont really know how to label it, but if you click anywhere on the body of the email it re-directs you to their homepage, using the default browser (FIREFOX), but the embedded picture for the graphics is a JPG.
NOTE: THIS REDIRECT DOES NOT CAUSE MAIL TO QUIT, UNLIKE THE NEXT EMAIL DOES??
    2. ABCsigns (email) - This sign company we use sends us quotes, so when i go to their emails (which are currently in the trash), as soon as i click on the email preview pane...Mail auto-quits...They are sending us .PDF attachments as our quotes
so it may be a problem with their attachment (ABCsigns) that is causing the crash in Mail, but the Heildeberg emails cause Firefox to crash once re-directed
    WEIRD STUFF
Thanks for any help that can be given
Im, gonna change the default browser to Safari, but know from past experiences that it crashes Safari too
    Thanks,
    Drew

  • Mail unexpectedly quits when viewing a message

    Hi,
I have 5 e-mail accounts set up - 3 gmail using pop forwarding and 2 other pop accounts. When I load Mail, it can fetch mail from all accounts without a problem. However, double clicking to view any message, from any of the accounts, will crash Mail. It opens the window in which the e-mail should appear and then crashes about 5s later.
    I have tried:
Removing the cache <account name>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Mail - no effect.
Removing the plist <account name>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist - no effect. At this setting up one account (because removing plist removes the account setting) and trying to view an e-mail still crashes Mail.
Safe boot (<shift> on restart) - no effect.
Removing all FW and USB devices - no effect.
Removing all preferences by dragging the Preferences folder to desktop from <account name>/Library/ - no effect. This means that no prefs including startup apps and dock are run, and I needed to setup one account in Mail to test. Trying to view the e-mail still crashed Mail.
The one thing that does work is setting up a new account (I called mine test) and setting up the pop account in that. It picked up 30 messages and I can view each one. If that works, I don't understand what settings I'm missing in my account that could be causing the problem.
What do you recommend I try next?
    Thanks,
    Tris.

Okay, all sorted after a call to Apple Technical support.
Issue - Mail crashed when trying to view a message.
This happened after setting up one account, so the number of accounts I had was not a problem.
The crash message showed the error:
Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo. The MailboxUid for a ToDo must be a ToDosMailboxUid'
I presume that this error is related to the way that iCal's to do list items and Mail link up.  The wrong sort of object is being created.  Mail doesn't like this and exits.
    To solve:
    1) Backup your iCal data with iCal File > Backup first.  If anything goes wrong in the next steps you can use iCal File > Restore to restore your iCal data to it's current state.
    2) Delete all the to do items.  Mail then worked fine for me.  Check this is the case after a restart.
    * At this point, restoring with iCal File > Restore > yourBackupFileName.icbu will re-introduce the problem. *
    3) You can backup and reimport your iCal to do lists using .ics files instead.  One way to do that is to:
    a) select one calendar from the calendar list, selecting all the to dos (select item top of list and <shift> click item at bottom of list) and drag this selection to the desktop.
    b) Rename the item including the calendar name e.g. To Do Items Home.ics.
    c) Repeat a & b for each calendar's to do lists.
    d) Check the name of the calendar you want to import into, on the calendar list.
    e) Drag the "To Do Items CalName.ics"; file, for that calendar, to the to do list.
    f) Repeat d & e for each calendar.
I think this must be to do with restoring an iCal .icbu file from a Tiger version of iCal, which is where my original came from.  Therefore, by importing the to do lists with .ics files, your to do list exists in "Leopard iCal" format which doesn't cause problems with Mail.  I'll file this as a bug report and workaround.
    HTH
    Tris.
