Mail uses 100% CPU--Must "Force Quit" to kill it
When I start up Mail, it works fine. I scroll through a few messages, Mail is responsive.
Then, at some point, I try to read an email, and Mail says "Loading Message" for 5-30 seconds before displaying the email. It's not the same message every time, and it's not a message with an attachment. Oftentimes, it's a short email.
Once Mail has displayed "Loading Message" for the first time, the CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there, even after it finally displays the email. Then, Mail will show the "Loading Message" for every mail I try to read, and the only way to kill the Mail program at that point is to "Force Quit".
Needless to say, this makes Mail unusable.
I'm a new Mail user, so my Inbox had less than 100 messages when this problem first started happening. (I didn't try to import old email.)
I get my mail from a POP server (gmail), so it's not an IMAP problem.
I'm Running:
Mail 2.0.8 (749.3)
Mac OS X 10.4.5 on a MacBook Pro
Has anyone else experienced problems like this? Any suggestions?

All messages where one of the destinations is <my email>
All messages where the origin is <my email>
All messages in malbox <my Gmail inbox>
Include replies: checked
I'm able to use (send/receive) this smart mailbox for several hours without any problem, then when I send a message (random length, no particular difference with the other sent messages), Mail complains about my reply (that I'm supposed to see in my smart mailbox) not being on the server (?), and all mailboxes (including trashed, spam, smart and non smart) are displaying "0 messages".
I'm still able to receive mail, and the unread counter grows as I receive them, but I'm not able to see any message in the box.

Hi everyone,
My Mail is very annoying since a few months... One in a while (almost every week), the app will start using a lot of CPU. Force Quit is required. When I restart Mail, it barely have time to begin cheking my new mails before jumping on the CPU again.
To solve the problem, I copy over the last version of my prefenreces from Time Machine. Is there a permanent solution to this bug?
BTW, I have 3 IMAP accounts (one is gmail) and 1 POP.

My fan kicked on about 10 minutes ago for no apparent reason, and activity monitor showed that mail.app was maxing out my CPU. I quit mail for about 20 minutes, and upon starting it back up, mail immediately maxed out the processor again. Does anyone have any idea why this could be?
MarkMy Mail jumps up the CPU to 100% for each character I type. 10.5.2 MBP 2.33GHz.
I use a large signature when ever I reply to one of my vacation rentals. It has about 4 small paragraphs, about nine links, 2 phone numbers, and 3 references to dates. This just started to happen when I upgraded to Leopard. I hit New EMail, put in the above signature text, and typing screeches to a halt. Each character takes about 1-2 seconds, Mail CPU maxes to 100%... I stop typing and it goes back down to normal, type 1 character and it jumps back up. When I copy and paste a sentence of text, it can take up to 20-30 seconds.
I tried /usr/bin/sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/'Envelope Index' vacuum and it shaved my index from 38 meg to 36 meg but didn't do anything.
I have a feeling it's related to Data Pickers. Anyway to turn that off so I can test it. Or does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Mountain Lion: Mail uses 100% cpu
Since the update to Mountain Lion Mail uses always more than 80% of cpu as long as it is running. Has anyone a solution?

Mail uses 100% CPU, then says there are 0 messages in mailboxes
Hi all,
I just decided to switch from thunderbird back to mail for various reasons. So I imported all my t-bird mail boxes successfully by copying the mailboxes and adding the .mbox extension, as suggested by someone somewhere on the internet. Mail says I have alot of mesages in some of the mailboxes, it says 14,000 in one, but I I don't think thats right.
At any rate, here's the problem: When I click on a mailbox I get an icon next to the mailbox that looks like a pie chart, initially messages in the mailbox will be displayed. If I click on another mailbox, eventually (after a mailbox or 2) I get the pie icon next to that mailbox and no messages displayed, and the title bar of the mail window now reads *name of mailbox* 0 messages, now if I click back on any other mailboxes I get the pie and no messages displayed and the 0 messages title bar, if I click on my inbox the title bar says also says 0 messages, 11 (or whatever) unread.
If I quit mail mds and mdimport are going crazy for a little while probably trying to index the messages. If I then reopen mail it displays as it should for a few clicks then I start getting the pies and no messages displayed.
Note mail is maxing out the available CPU cycles through this entire process.
So I guess I don't really know what the deal is. Do any of you? Like, Will mail sort itself out eventually? Do I need to re-import? Can mail even deal with the amount of email messages I have? Can I turn of spotlight indexing in certain mailboxes?
I thought I liked the idea of spotlight integration but maybe I don't...

Since the update to Mavericks Mail app uses more than 50% of cpu as long as it is running (temperatur of CPU is about 85 °C, fan about 6000 rpm). Yesterday it discharged fully charged battery in 1,5 hours (normally lasts about 4 hours). Has anyone a solution?
Deleting the envelope index files and reindexing the messages did not help in my case. 6 hours later, CPU usage by Mail is still at 100% - independently of whether there is a network connection or not. With network connection the activity window provides no indication that Gmail/IMAP folders are repeatedly synchronized. There is also no indication that spotlight is updating index files, as md* processes are close to 0 % CPU usage.

I'm afraid there is no other option than hoping for further bugfixes from Apple...
It is a great shame that Apple's quality control did not discover the severe errors in an application that is so important for many customers. Did Apple's business administration, while pushing for quick solutions, prevail against engineers? Well-known high-tech companies have perished from this (epidemic) disease. -
Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server
Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?

I am having quite the interesting issue. I have read plenty of reports where users' Apple Mail app is using 100% of CPU. This did not start for me until I went to go use the new mail drop feature in Yosemite. I am running Yosemite (10.10) on my 13" Retina - MacBook Pro (flash storage, 8GB RAM, 2.4 dual-core Intel i5) and my Apple mail is version 8.0. I have tried 3 different mail services (2 gmail accounts and iCloud), all result in the same issue. I have also done a complete erase of the hard disk and a brand new install of Yosemite, the issue persists.
As previously stated my mail app is using 100% upon, and only while, using the mail drop feature. If I force quit the mail app and allow it a minute, the mail app returns to using less than 1% of the CPU and the app and entire system resume normal function. Upon attempting to resend the same message that is placed in my outbox the CPU usage jumps to 50-80%. After a few seconds, the CPU usage will sometimes jump higher than 100%, ranging from 130% - 199%. All of these observations were made using Activity Monitor. Of course you can see my frustration, an app using this much CPU stops every process my Mac is doing (using safari, messages, iTunes etc.) - the whole computer locks up. Even force quitting is a difficult process to attempt.
Does anyone have a fix for this? I am at a loss and have no idea what to do. I am a pretty tech savvy guy and have tried everything that I would've thought would fix this. Is there anyway this could be a hardware issue? I don't think so but... all possibilities need to be taken into consideration, even though that one seems outlandish. Upon creating a new user account with a separate user library (but same system library) I figured the OS was the problem. I can't narrow it down to being a specific mail provider, and it can't be my OS since I have now erased and reinstalled 10.10 twice. Thank you!I have this same issue. It has been driving me insane, Mac Mail uses 100% CPU most of the time I use it, after every time I open the machine, or after a sleep or even mostly after a screen saver has locked me out. It normally settles down after 5-15 minutes, but then happens every time again. It is killing my battery.

Must force quit Mail application
I am most used to using Entourage as my mail application but have been trying to use Mail but it constantly freezes and then I must Force Quit to start over. Keep going back to Entourage but of course I need Mail, for example, if I want to mail contents of webpage in Safari. What's the deal with Mail. Are there known problems?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?

To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:

Will not upgrade mail database....freezes and must force quit

I can get mail from icloud but not thru mail icon on dock. Help!I think it's safe to say that FCPX wasn't tested throroughly for use on anything.
with that out of the way, there are many variables as to what might cause your problems, but I don't think it's the mac mini as long as it meets the specified minimum requirements (especially the graphics card).
You might try creating a camera archive first and then importing from that.
The other issue might be the file format itself; you might need to use Clipwrap first. Maybe someone who has the same camera can chime in. -

Mail is using 100% CPU processes - wondering if I possibly have the answer?

I have a big problem with Mail using all the CPU processes but may just have found a possible solution. I'm posting to see if anyone else shares this problem or can shed some light on whether or not this is a possible solution.
_*The Problem*_
Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed that Mail is using on average 100% of the processes and sometimes up to 168% (I have screenshots to prove it). My 17" MacBookPro gets very, very hot and the fans spin up to cool it down so it's obviously not right as it's never done this before. I can only use Mail intermittently now as the machine overheats quickly soon after Mail starts up. As a result, the CPU is being hammered so I can't now use Mail or other CPU intensive applications properly, which is a big problem.
I've used the iStatPro widget to verify that Mail is constantly using 100% of the CPU processes. I've also verified this using Utilities / Activity Monitor. When the Activity Monitor application loads, I've selected Mail from the list of Process Names and then clicked Inspect. I've managed to identify the parent process as being launchd (110) which is using all the CPU power. Here are some other stats for this parent process:

I have screenshots to back this up but no way of posting them here. I have also managed to use Activity Monitor to generate sample data that the process is creating and again there is no way of posting an attachment here but there is lots of sample data from the process to look at. I've compared the sample data from my MacBookPro to a colleagues machine and the difference between the sample data is enormous. There is obviously something very wrong happening.

I recently installed a Beta version of Daylite 3 as I was interested in the application and remembered that it integrates closely with Mail. I wondered if Daylite was constantly trying to communicate with Mail and having problems. Having uninstalled Daylite 3, the problem of Mail using all the processes has so far not reappeared. Mail is now using very little of the CPU processes as is usual. However, I'm currently at home instead of on my network at the office so I'll wait to see if the problem still fails to appear when at work.
I know other people have had problems with Mail using 100% of the processes. Have you also installed Daylite 3? There has been some talk of Flip4Mac being a possible culprit but I use Flip4Mac and haven't previously had the problem. The only recent change and connection I can think of is an install of Daylite 3.
I don't want to talk down Daylite 3 but it's the only thing I can think of and having uninstalled it, the problem hasn't occurred. I hope I have stumbled across the solution but any thoughts, shared experiences or feedback would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks for the post. Not sure what you mean when you say "What does Mail say it's doing?" Can you be more specific and supply specific instructions to follow so that I can give you the information you need?
I've sampled the process but can't post any attachments on the forum. I've listed what the Activity Monitor stats are saying at the top level in the post above.
This is a serious problem that's hammering my machine and making it overheat and almost making it unusable. Any feedback or instructions anyone can give me for what info to supply to help you determine what the issue is would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to find a solution here rather than have the machine overheat permanently and eventually fail, leaving me to sort it out with AppleCare.

Firefox 3.6.2 using Mac OS 10.5.8 won't quit, must force quit

Have loved FF for years on my Macs. But for last few months FF will only quit normally maybe 20% of the time; the other 80% I must force-quit it. SOMETIMES it will quit, but I have to wait SOOOOO LONG that I can see the grass growing out my office window. Any ideas? I am using FF 3.6.2 running Mac OS 10.5.8 on hardware PowerMac G5 Dual Processors (which was the last of the PPC processors, before Intel chips came into use). I have plenty of RAM. I type a lot of lyrics, which tend to cotain words like ’cause and ’em instead of because and them.
I've set up autocorrect instances to change a plain apostrophe with an ending, single curly quote for these words, but they are invariably changed to a beginning, single curly quote mark by Pages. The only way I can get the correct curly quote is to type over the wrong quote manually and hope that I don't have to edit the rest of the word again, as this would cause autocorrect to kick in again and change the quote to the wrong, beginning curly mark again.
Does anyone know how to get around this tedious problem? -
Must force quit mail - registering syncing suspected
On an iMac running 10.5.8, Mail has to be force quit repeatedly. When looking at the Activity viewer, the process that appears to be hanging is "registering syncing preferences," and "syncing."
Any idea what's going on here? I've deleted all mail data and rebuilt it and consistently have the same issue. I suspect it's related to MobileMe syncing, but am not sure. Any ideas?Having many issues with mail. Must click message viewer to actually see my emails. Then must force quit to get out of mail. I finally left entourage(super slow with exchange server) to find mail not to be any better.
