Mail uses up all CPU resources

Hey! I've got three mail accounts in use with mail, one imap, gmail and a pop account. When I start mail and click on the pop account mail starts to use more and more CPU untill it uses up 100% on both cores. Beside the pop account I can see a clock. Anyone got any idea what's going on, and how I can fix it?

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Move any “IMAP-” or “Mac-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Firefox uses all CPU resources when loading pages with lots of images.

I just installed XP, and when I load pages with a ton of images, say, tumblr, Firefox uses ALL CPU time until it finishes loading.
But because of the slowdown, it takes forever to download all the images.
It's not related to my connection, I've got 15mbit downstream.
I have Win7 on a different partition, and I have never had this problem.
As far as I know, all my drivers and XP are up to date.
I could have an old driver lurking, should I be looking at something specific?
I've tried to find something on Google, but I've not found anything really helpful...

I haven't gotten around to installing antivirus (or anything else, for that matter).
If I watch in Task Manager, Firefox.exe goes to 100% as soon as I load the page.
And no, that guide didn't help much. I don't have any addons or plugins yet, this is a new install.
I got a huge slowdown a bit ago, it's because it was using almost 1.5GB of RAM o_o

  • Mail uses too much CPU power

I don't know why Mail uses something like 99% of the cpu power. It does that a few minutes after it opens. I'm running Lion on a Macbookpro3,1.
    Thanks

i am having the same problem. it slows when (a) it's accessing inboxes, or junk or trash ..., (b) it slows when i start a message, (c) it slows intermittently when i am typing a message, (d) it slows when i am sending a message, (e) it slows when i close mail, (f) it slows just about every moment i do ANYTHING.
i had no problem like this in tiger prior to installing Leopard (upgrade). i am using a 2.5 GHx iMac G5. i have cleaned out all the unnecessary inboxes in ~/Library that are generated by reaccessing the IMAP accounts after the leopard upgrade. i don't have large/many-filed mailboxes at ALL either on the IMAP accounts or on the computer.
everytime it slows it the cpu is hovering between 60 and 90% on mail.app.
conversely, i didn't encounter this problem on my 2 powerbooks. one powerbook got a fresh install and i just ported over the mailboxes. the other i did an upgrade.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Picture control uses up all the resources

I am using picture control to plot data. As the number of data points increase, the CPU resource usage increases. It finally reaches 100%. All I am doing is drawing the points on the picture control.

    hi jvg,
you are accumulating draw commands in your shift register.
Your accumulated commands adrawing the same points over top of where they where before. If you just pass the outputs of draw functions to the picture control, the new points will be drawn over top of the previous picture.
    So,
in your example, toss the picture-shift-register and just wire to the picture control.

  • Firefox sometimes freezes up for a few minutes and begins using 47% of cpu resources and sometimes also extra 100-200kb of memory

since updating from 3.6.xx to firefox 5, 6 and now 7, firefox sometimes will freeze while loading a site and use 42-50% of cpu resource. it also sometimes doubles or trebles memory it uses at same time as freezing, and freezes for 2 or more minutes. when it comes back sometimes it will have failed to load a page and will display the url but a white screen. this can happen any site, but seems to occur more when on image sites. usually i have more than one ff window open, one of which is an iboard, and the freezing seems to occur more often when either posting, or when opening a subboard or more often a thread in tabs or new windows. problem seemed to be helped when i disabled a recently installed java plugin but didnt disappear, and it can still happen anytime with only one window/tab open. the only common thing seems to be the site is either refreshing, or loading.

    Hi Juan:
We are trying to develop a data acquisition system. We need to pass 16 values every 8.33 ms by using DS Socket and display the 16 values in 16 CWGraph components.
I wrote two applications by modifying the DS Writer/Reader With Attributes examples.
To change the interval of the Sender, you have to change the interval of Timer1 in its properties in VB IDE.
To change the number of charts ploted on the CWGraph components, you have to comment or un-comment out the corresponding line in the Receiver VB code.
I run them on a Pentium 3, 600MHz, PC, the test result is:
    1. The Receiver can not receive all the 16 values when the sender sends them in less than every 10 ms.
There are some packets lost during the transmission.
    2. Whi
le the Receiver not plotting any chart, it can receive all the 16 values corrctly in all the packets when the Sender sends a packet in every 11 ms.
    3. If the Receiver plots on one chart, it can receive all the 16 values corrctly in all the packets when the Sender sends a packet in every 12 ms.
    4. If the Receiver plots on 16 charts and the Sender sends a packet in less than every 84 ms, the CPU usage will be 100% and the controls, such as lables, on the receiver GUI will not be updated corrctly.
    5. If the Sender sends a packet in greater every 85 ms, the Receiver can receive the data and plots them on 16 charts corrctly.
The test results do not meet our requirement and my application is aimed to be used on some less powerful laptops. I hope it is not because the performance limit of the DS Socket and CWGraph.

  • Mail uses too much CPU percentage

    Hi,
I am using a macbook with Mac OSX10.4.11.
Recently, my Mail behaves quite strangely. It uses more than 100% CPU. I have restarted Mail several times. Things aren't getting any better.
What causes this problem? Is it because some malware, because some days ago, I used my computer in an open wireless network. Obviously, this Mail program was running during that time.
    Thank you very much!

It's just I am not quite familiar with this operating system.
Then we just need to go slow.
    Which folder should I backup?
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/
Right click or control click on the foler Mail at that location, choose Archive, which will make a ZIP of the whole folder.
After I backup that folder, should I directly delete the file named "mail" from the application list?
NOPE, where not deleting the whole folder, just a little preference file called...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
just the "com.apple.mail.plist" part of it, asnd hopefully you see it's in a different location, the Preferences folder instead of the Mail folder.

  • Epsonstatusmonitor3 eating up all CPU resources

Since I habe an Intel Imac my Laserprinter (Epson ACL 1100) has a problem.
A program (Epsonstatusmonitor3) is started to check whether there is enough toner. So far as before.
However when the printing is finished this little app is not closed down and remains activer. Problem is that it consumes all available CPU power thereby disrupting things.
I already dl'ed the latest drivers from Epson (marked for Intel, was Universal) but this did not help.
Anyone similar problem or maybe a solution (besides removing the app)?

I had the same issue. As others have answered, syslogd is used for system logging.
It turns out a very large /var/log/asl.db (a primary log for syslogd) causes all manner of issues, notably, occasional syslogd cpu hoggage. In my case, I was getting repeated malloc errors from syslogd as well, compounding the issue. My asl.db was was 55Mb. After reading this blog post:
    http://smartic.us/2007/11/8/leopard-100-cpu-usage-caused-by-syslogd-and-possibly -time-machine
I went on a hunt, and found, according to:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/syslogd. 8.html
The asl.db size is supposed to be limited to a default of 25600000 bytes. Mine was way bigger. Something was clearly amiss.
Reading further reveals this statement, in direct contradiction:
"...The maximum size of the database (in bytes) may be specified using the -db_max option. If messages must be removed to limit the database size, oldest messages are removed first. By default there is no database size limit."
It appears this statement is correct -- there is no database size limit -- theoretically anyway; practically, there clearly is, as evidenced by this and many similar threads around the net.
The fix is to edit /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist
    and add the db_max arg:
    <string>/usr/sbin/syslogd</string>
    <string>-db_max 5000000</string>
    add that second line.
Adjust the max to your taste. I limited mine to 5M bytes. After that, the nightly sweep should keep this problem from occurring again.
To activate the change, in terminal:
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist
    sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist
    or simply reboot.
It appears apple needs to bring back a sensible max size, as syslogd is clearly not capable of coping with anything too large.

  • Ipad mail using 2GB - all accounts deleted

How do I free up > 2GB of memory in ipad mail.
Was a problem in IOS7, and STIL there after 8.0.2 upgrade :-((.
Deleted all mailboxes, after finding that I cannot bulk delete mails, only 1 by 1 (Apple: you've got to be kidding !!!).
Now start mail app says 'create new mailbox' (as I deleted them all), but memory usage STILL reports 2.2GB used :-O - how can this be ????

  • How to make spatial computations use more/all CPU power?

    Hi,
In an service I'm calculating spatial data (using Microsoft.SqlServer.Types) in memory. These calculations often take 4-5 minutes but they are never, ever, using more than 50% CPU. I have tried this on a single core too (Azure) and still, CPU won't go above
50%. I'd really like 100% CPU usage in these services.
What to look for in the code? I've got a lot of loops and where possible I'm using AsParallell() to take advantage of instances with multiple cores.
Why doesn't the service just claim full speed on the CPU and get the job done twice as fast?
    Werner

Can you clarify what it is exactly that you're trying to do?
you say that you're using the .net libraries to perform spatial computations in memory but then you mention that you also have spatial data (i'm assuming from the index comment) in the database..
Where is the bottleneck? on the db site for when you're pulling out the spatial data or on the .net app server that's running the service?
Is the query using the spatial indexes? is trace flag 4199 on?
I found that rolling my own tesselation function greatly improved parallelism in regards to spatial queries, although this is only applicable to point in polygon type queries eg return the name/attribute of the complex polygon in which the lat/long sits

  • Repeating Call Library Function Node uses up all my CPU

    Hi,
I'm not very proficient at labview or programming so any help would be gladly appreciated.
I bought a USB Digital Input/output hobby kit (one of those things you build yourself). I have got it made and i have managed to get labview talking to it. It was supplied with a .dll to control it and the digital output works a treat.
However, i want to monitor the ditital input channels (as fast as possible), but if i get a vi to repeatedly call the dll then all my CPU usage goes with it. I don't really understand what the dll does and how exactly labview interacts with it. Can i monitor the digital input channels without using up all my resources?
I wasn't able to attach the dll that i'm using so i renamed it .jpg instead. You can rename it to .dll to look at it if you want.
    Thanks

By putting a small wait (of a few milliseconds) you can decrease CPU usage without affecting your performance too badly. However, it really depends on how long a single call to your DLL actually takes. Have you measured this? If it takes, say, a half-second for a single DLL call to execute, then small delays are not going to help because the bulk of the CPU usage is taken up by your DLL.
By the way, a CIN is not likely to help at all. There's not much difference in terms of overhead for a CIN vs Call Library node anyway.

  • Moble device support uses 50 percent of cpu resource

I tried uninstalling Itunes and all of it's components. I have a pentium 4 with 3 gigs of ram. Apple Mobile Device Support  uses 50% of CPU resources and slows my computer to a craw when Itunes is not running. I don't mind if it uses resources when using the product, but it uses the resources even when your not running any Apple software... Windows XP 32 bit pro all service packs and upgrades. Itunes 10.5 or latest. Any help please..

I am having same problem.  Many say reload iTunes in a particular way.  Some say that works, others say it doesn't.   You can run "netsh winsock reset" and it will temporarily free up the memory once you reboot, but it impacted my IE from finding the server.  Still looking.  Apple must know this is a problem.   As one use said, have they heard of regression testing?

    Thanks for your reply.
"r" is the number of processes ON CPU plus the number of processes WAITING FOR CPU.
The following is from "man vmstat".
      Procs
r: The number of processes waiting for run time.
b: The number of processes in uninterruptible sleep.I am confused whether or not "r" contains processes which are corrently on cpu, not in run queue.
Could you give me more detailed explaination or some article?
    Thanks.

  • CPU resource hog FMLE 3 vs. FME 2.5

Has anyone experienced a huge CPU drain by FMLE 3 - going to over 90% (and sometimes 100%) which is causing jerky video capture and audio skips.
I'm encoding at a lower level of 500 kbps for video and 32 kbps for audio with VP6 and the capture to hard disk is so very jerky.
FME 2.5 works great at the same settings on the same machine and doesn't use more than 55% of CPU resources, with a very clean capture. I've gone back to using 2.5 till I can figure out what's going on with 3.0/3.1
Why is FMLE 3/3.1 such a resource hog? Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
    My system specs are:
    Core2Duo Laptop 2.0 gHz with 4GB Ram
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit (and 64 bit)
    Pesi
    http://www.webcastlive.mediastreams.ca
    http://www.mediastreams.ca

OK - here's where it stands with both input and output size set the same (720X480) and all other factors remaining constant as before:
    v. 2.5
CPU resources used when not recording: 15-17%
CPU resources used up while recording: 40-50%
    v.3.1
CPU resources used when not recording: 15-20%
CPU resources used while recording: 75-85% (peaking occasionally to 95%)
(still 25% more than v.2.5 but manageable).
Does this mean that I am always forced to stream and the larger output size?
Here's another variation of the test with v.3.1 ...
    Input size: 360X240 Output size: 720X480 - CPU used: 98% !!!
Input size: 360X240 Output size: 600X400 - CPU used: 72%
(What's the implication of using a smaller input and larger output size? How would it affect the quality of the end result video?)
    Input size: 360X240 Output size: 360X240 - CPU used: 22% !!!
Input size: 720X480 Output size: 360X240 - CPU used: 50%
Input size: 720X480 Output size: 600X400 - CPU used: 90-95%
Input size: 720X480 Output size: 500X334 - CPU used: 75%
(Unfortunately Input sizes are fixed by fmle and cannot go between 720X480 and 360X240)
Note: despite the interesting results of the input/output tests, its still evident that 3.1 uses 25% more CPU resources than 2.5, making it the less efficient of the 2.
