Mail very very slow

I have an iMac and an iBook. I also have Me.com.
Today, when i try and send basic messages (no large attachments) to myself via the iMac and using Mail, it takes way way too long for the message to leave. The progress bar (Mail Activity) is stuck at halfway. Yet, the message shows up on my iBook mail, and in my Mobile Me mail. Yet, they never show up in my iMac Mail and the activity bar never gets to 100% done.
Messages sent to myself from the iBook mail or the Mobile Me mail go through fine. I have speed tested my DSL and it is OK.
What and where can I look in various setting to correct this? Do I need to reinstall Mail on my iMac?
Thanks, Don

  • Mac Mail very slow when waking

    Hello
Mac Mail is very slow on my machine, just stalls and gives me the spinning wheel for several minutes. Usually it is when the machine has woken up; it appears that it is trying to do background tasks (like fetching mail) while this is going on but I am unable to switch to Mail for quite a long time. I sometimes see notifications of new mail in this period, equally it sometimes shows in Activity Monitor as "not responding" (although if I wait it eventually comes back).
It is runnning on a brand new MBP retina, lots of RAM, disk and processor available.
It collects mail from four mailboxes, three of them are Exchange and one is IMAP. None are massively high volume, kind of normal to low usage for the average person I guess. I did rebuild the database a while ago, but it just lost lots of mail which then needed to be slowly re-downloaded. I gave up on Outlook (on my previous machine) for being generally crashy, dysfuctional and annoying but now Mail isn't far behind.
Contacts, which I just leave open in the background quite often, also seems to be having trouble staying alive. Often "not responding" and requires a forced quit.
    Any suggestions?
    Dominic

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Mail.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

  • Mac Mail Very Slow (Spinning ball)

    Hi -
My Mac Mail has gotten very very slow lately when first opening the app, or returning to the app after a long rest.
The ball starts spinning and it takes about 2-3 mins before I can use mail.
My mail database is very very large.  20GB, so I assume that is part of the problem.  I did rebuild but that didn't seem to help.
Any ideas on how I can handle that, other than dumping my archive?

  • Exchange mail very slow on OS X yosemite

Often when a system update comes out, Mail is the culprit in each release. This release is no exception. I updated to OS X Yosemite and accessing my emails through Mail is painful if not nearly impossible. Exchange connects without error and syncs up all services without a problem - except Mail which is constantly pushing requests to Fetch information from the server, constantly syncing. As a result it means I can't read my email let alone reply to them.
I removed my exchange account and delete my Mail cache and local folders, readded the account, but still no joy.
IS anyone else have issues with this or simply me ?

I have a similar problem. Mail is very slow performing actions on Exchange server such as deleting mail, fetching mail. It is very slow even sowing the rainbow spinner often when performing an action. This is an upgrade from Mavericks on a Mac Mini (late 2012) with a 2.6GHz i7 quad core CPU. It is connected to an Exchange Server 2010. When I use connection doctor it takes a very long time to show a connected message.
I have tried deleting the account and re creating it but the problem persists.
The issue does not exist on Airmail 2 connected to the same Exchange Server on the same computer nor does it happen on an MacBook Air 11 (mid 2012) where the Yosemite install is an upgrade from Yosemite Beta 6.
Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Sending mail very slow after 10.9.5 upgrade.

I upgraded to 10.9.5 yesterday and ever since then, sending mail (using Mail.app) is very, very slow or the emails do not get sent and stay stuck in my Outbox.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
I've deleted my iCloud account and re-added it and it didn't help.

  • Mail very slow to get new mail after Lion upgrade

After I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion my Mail application has become very sluggish. It takes ages to show new mail from my Gmail account. It seems to spend ages downloaded messages. If I access my Gmail via Safari it is virtually instant.
    Any advice most welcome!

I had a similar problem and it was related to my wireless network settings.  The Lion upgrade had created a second wireless network setup named Apple 888.b1 on my airport/time capsule.  I deleted that second phantom one so it was just back to the one that I had setup and everything is fine again.
So if your broadband connction is wireless you might check the wireless settings and see if a second network setup was created.

  • Sending mail very slow

Besides the notebook described below in the signature I have a MacBook right next to it. On both, the same three email accounts are configured exactly the same. One account is the IMAP MobileMe (aka .mac) account. The other two are POP accounts, for one of which I have a digital certificate. When I send mail through that account, it can take up a minute before the "busy" icon next to the Sent mailbox for the account disappears and the "whoosh" sound is heard. On the MacBook, the same mail is sent almost instantly. The digital certificate is in a password-protected part of my keychain, so on both notebooks I am prompted -- with almost no delay between pressing the Send button and receiving the prompt -- for that password before the actual send operation begins.
By the way, both notebooks are connected wirelessly to the same Apple AirPort Extreme, so I suspect that the problem is unrelated to the network infrastructure.

    Hello Niken:
I fixed a similar problem by using OpenDNS.

I think the problem might have been with my ISP, but using open DNS solved the slow mail transmission on both of my macs.

  • I am having trouble with yahoo mail, very slow to send never used to be this way started before iOs5 update

I am having trouble with mail, yahoo has started to have a problem sending, slow or not at all started before latest update, help

I noticed this at one point and what I did, which worked, was to delete the mailbox from my iPad, then reinstall it.  Give it a try and see if it helps you as well.

  • Mail very slow in Mountain Lion

The upgrade to Mountain Lion went smoothly but Mail works really badly afterwards.
When sending an email, it takes a few minutes before the mail goes out. And that's with any size message.
Auto-completion of mail addresses while composing takes multiple minutes. Even after it finally comes up with a list of email addresses, pressing enter on one also takes minutes to acknowledge
At various times, hitting the mail icon on the dock has no effect. The same is true with Command+TAB
Overall, the unresponsiveness is painful and making me wish I hadn't upgraded

This didn't solve my problem. First of all:
         $ ls /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
ls: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist: No such file or directory
but I do have the file in my local Library:
         $ pwd
         /Users/spate/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
         $  ls -l *mail*
         lrwxr-xr-x  1 spate  spate     64 Jul 26 11:08 com.apple.mail.LSSharedFileList.plist@ ->      ../../../../../Preferences/com.apple.mail.LSSharedFileList.plist
         -rw-------  1 spate  spate   6733 Jul 27 08:24 com.apple.mail.plist
         -rw-------  1 spate  spate  56130 Jul 27 08:12 com.apple.mail.plist.bak
This is after I moved com.apple.mail.plist to com.apple.mail.plist.bak and then started Mail again. As you can see, it created a new, much smaller com.apple.mail.plist
No luck - just as painfully slow as before!
    This is horribly painful!

  • Mac Mail very slow in and out

I upgraded to Yosemite a few weeks ago. ever since my email has been painfully slow connecting to the iMAP server. Messages will sit for hours in my outbox, and attachments take forever to download. I have tried the offline/online work around. Makes no difference. I try quitting and re-opening mail, no difference. I am now re-building my mail boxes but the speed or lack of it in downloading the messages back from the server seems soooooo slow. Any other ideas anyone please??
Its like trying to run through treacle when you need to get on with your work and you find that emails you need s response to are stuck in your outbox!!

  • Outgoing mail very slow

When I send an email. The wheel spins for quite awhile before the message leaves. This is a relatively new problem. I'm not sure if it started when I installed 10.5

MAC Mail, for some reason, wants a DNS server setting in the network setup.
Under System Preferences, go to Network and add your DNS numbers for your ISP Server. Get the right numbers from your ISP. I did a search for "DNS" on the ATT/YAHOO member web site.
This fixes the slow checking and sending of mail....It also fixes problems where mail sends slow and may give Authentication errors.
I spent many hours on this and finally the answer was posted on this forum.
Public DNS servers are less likely to be changed. They have been tried and do work. Nobody knows why.

  • Mail very slow to automatically complete addresses

after typing in a few characters in any recipient field in mail I get the spinning beach ball for up to 20 seconds while mail tries to automatically complete the address, is there anyway to reduce the lag time without turning this feature off. I don't have any ldap setting configured.

The Mail.app saves all message recipients in the list of Previous Recipients in Mail and this list can grow over time especially if your sent a larger number of messages.
The address autofill feature pulls from the Address Book and the list of Previous Recipients in Mail.
At the Mail.app menu bar, go to Window and select Previous Recipients.
A previous recipient already entered in the Address Book will have a vCard icon to the left of the name or email address.
You can remove a previous recipient from the list or add a previous recipient to the Address Book that is not already entered.
It is a good idea to purge the list of Previous Recipients not entered or that you want or need to be entered in the Address Book from time to time.

  • Mail very slow to send after install of 10.10.3

Composed mail now sits in the outbox grinding away long before it finally sends. This issue has been duplicated both on my MB air and iMac desktop,
    Has anyone found a solution?

I had the same problem, plus new emails were coming into my inbox hours late.
I found the solution in different forum.
I did this and everything is working perfectly now.
    1. Quit Mail
    2. Move ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail to desktop
    3. Log out
    4. Log in
    5. Test Mail.app

  • Receiving Mail Very Slow - 1Kb!!

    Hi,
This may have been solved somewhere else - but I've search and search but can not find a solution. Please post a link to the thread/post that solves this problem - if there is a solution - otherwise just post solution here.
The Version of Mac Mail we are running is 3.6 on OSX 10.5.8
I seem to have an issue with receiving emails.
I think it is a Mac Mail problem (program) than anything else.
I've tried the internet (Google, Apple Forums) but can't find a solution.
What seems to happen is Mac Mail seems to sit/stall on downloading/receiving emails - especially if they have attachments.
It tries to download them - but instead of going at full speed (say 600Kb) it may download them at 1KB - thus taking for ever to download.
Emails will eventually download but they may take several hours - and all other emails bank up.
The only way I found to fix the problem is to do a restart of the computer - but that may only solve the problem for 5 minutes.
I read that turning "Configure IPv6" to "Off" under TCP/IP - network settings - might help - but it didn't.
This problem is happening on all our iMac computers - OSX 10.5.8.
None of these email accounts sync to an iphone or the like and they all just run one account.
    All are running POP accounts.
Downloading the same email from Webmail gives me download speeds I should/would expect where as Mac Mail starts off at a high speed (for about 5 seconds) then basically drops straight away to 1-2Kb download speed.
Surfing the Internet is fine also.
Rang up the ISP by they couldn't shed any light on the situation - saying it was the program than anything else.
Tried changing the account to IMAP - which on the Mac means you have to create a new account which creates its own issues!! This sort of worked but ideally the account should be a POP account.
I have also rebuilt the mail boxes but this didn't seem to help much.
    Sending is fine.
    Any thoughts would be greatful.

The way i managed to fix it instantly was:
Go into MAIL and PREFERENCES and then in the Accounts list select the account your having problems with (if you have multiple accounts otherwise the account should already be selected)
Click on ADVANCED and at the bottom where it says about AUTHENTICATION POP (APOP) and untick the use SSL box.
Save this when prompted and this should solve the problem.
Hope this helps someone else out there!

  • TS4002 Mail very slow across all devices (MacBook, iPad (retina), iPhone 4s

MacBook (2007, 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDR SDRAM) 10.7.5 with Mail Version 5.3 (1283).  Retina iPad and iPhone 4s.  All software up to date.  All with plenty of space.
It takes a long time to send and a long time to down load messages on the MacBook.  Things seem file on my iPad, iPhone and checking mail through Safari via iCloud.com.
I checked the settings in my account preferences etc. and things looked as they should be as listed here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4002 .
I've tried to stop Mail and start it and got a message that things were still being done and the "Activity" window popped up with the horizontal "blue" barber poles that just spin and never seem to finish.
I've also restared my MacBook and the problem persists.  The Activity Monitor shows no anomolous behavior with regards to CPU or System memory and the hard drive has 25 GB free.
It seems to be possible to send and receive mail, but it takes a long time.  Speed checks show my DSL speed tha same as always and pages in Safari load as always.  It only seems that Mail is problematic.
    Any suggestions?

Things seem to be back to normal all the way around for me.
I did a little Googling of this sort of thing and saw some old threads in these forums and elsewhere.  It seems there are "micro-outages" with Mac Mail servers sometimes that last a few days that only affect a few lucky users.
Maybe that's what was going on.
