Mail Viewing Options Gone.  I need to DISABLE automatically marking a message as read!

In Lion, the Mail Viewing options to disable automatically marking a viewed message as read are gone!  I absolutely NEED to disable automatically marking a viewed message as read!  How can I disable this if the option isn't present?  Is there a workaround?

Ok...I take part of what I said back. It was MailActOn by InDev which allowed me to not automatically have a message marked as read.  See http://indev.ca/MailActOn.html for more info.
Apparently the version I had loaded wasn't compatible with Lion Mail.app.  Since updating it, I know have this feature again.

  • How to prevent mail app on OS X & iOS from automatically marking email messages as read just when they are selected either intentionally or not

    Good morning guys
is there a way to prevent mail app on OS X & iOS from automatically marking email messages as read just when they are selected either intentionally or not
    thanks

On OS X, You are able to hide the preview window on the right in normal mode, or on the lower side in classic mode, by simply putting your cursor on the thin bar which is in between, and then make it as small as possible, so it goes away.
Then your messages won't be automatically read when clicked once, but only if you click them twice and a new window with the message opens.
Also, you are able to mark them as unread again, which is a silly workaround, but possible.
You can do that by right clicking and select 'Mark as...' -> unread.
    On iOS, I'm not sure..

  • How to prevent Mail form marking the messages as read when marked?

    I use Mail 3.0 on Leopard (10.5.1).
Each time I click on a message, it automatically marks the message as read.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening? How can i set up a time-delay or switch it off?

I think the only way would be for Apple to implement a delay for marking files as read. Perhaps putting a delay of a second or two would work, so folks can browse through their mail without actually reading it. As it is, though, there's no way to prevent mail from marking a message you browse over.

  • Mail view options

On my macbook pro, the mail display keeps switching from date received to subject in the view options.  Is there a way to keep it locked on date received?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How do you set Mail to mark a message as "read" only when you open it

I'm using Apple Mail. Works great, but I have one big issue I can't figure out. I want my messages to be marked as read ONLY if I double click or actually physically open the message....not when I click it once with the mouse or if it gets selected in the inbox message pane. The way it's set up, all my mail is read the minute I click on it. This is extremely annoying and I can't find anywhere where you can set this preference. HELP.
does this make sense to anybody??
    OSX Tiger 10.4.7

The OP's question makes sense and Scott's comment is correct. You can have Mail setup so that there is the list of folders on the left, the list of emails in that folder in the top right hand side and the selected message in the pane below that on the lower right hand side. In that case clicking on a message in the list of messages will display it below and Mail will deem you to have read it. On the other hand if you drag down the divider and get rid of the pane in which the message displays then selecting it does not mark it read. Double-clicking it should bring it up in a new window and cause the message to be marked read.
Basically Mail marks the message read when it has displayed (some of) the message in some place (ie a separate window or the lower right hand side pane) where you could have read it

  • Mail viewing options

I fiddled around with one of my accounts. I appear to have lost all mail messages from one op my pop accounts. The other 3 accounts are still there. Looking at time machine info about restoring mail I have found where the mail is stored on my HD. I have made a copy of the POP-accounts folder and it appeared that all mail is still there. I imported the mail and it now resides in a folder called Imported. When I copy the mail to the original location I effectively have all messages twice. In order to avoid that I wonder if there iis a way to view the lost messages again. Please note that the mail appear to have disappeared in each subfolder of this account. Inbox, Send Messages, Deleted Messages, Drafts and Junk. So it appears that there is something wrong with the pop account rather than the inbox only...

Try deleting the account and then add it back.

  • Saving mail view options

Hi, My Mail has changed the view setting it uses when it opens (I do not recall having changed anything). If I put the view back to my preferred column settings, there appears to be no way of saving them.. Can someone advise on how I can?
    thanks
    MST

    Hi Mark.
Mail has some glitches when it comes to preserve column settings. Note also that Mail stores those settings globally for all mailboxes, so you can't customize them differently for each one, except for small variations such as the sort order or whether messages should be organized by threads.
If Mail refuses to preserve your changes when a particular mailbox is selected, try doing it with a different mailbox. In particular, if you have more than one account, try with the Inbox aggregate and also with any of the individual account mailboxes in that group.

  • Need a way to marked text messages

I get a lot of texts that work on different tasks I need to do. I would like a way to be able to mark a text once it is completed without having to delete the text. Currently I delete them once they are completed as this helps me keep track of things yet to be done.  Coworkers do not like to write emails. Through texting I have no way to keep a record of communications. Unless I let my message box get fall and then I am lost trying to keep track of what I need to complete. So, it would be nice if from the main text box I could put a mark by the complete message inbox from a particular person, and also to go into that person's communication history and individually Mark separate texts. If there is no way to do this through an app, I would love for the developers to work on this because it would make my job so much easier.

Submit your feedback directly to Apple using the appropriate link on the Feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
You could always copy the texts to the Reminders app or some other task management app.

  • "show view options" is gone

When you right-click on your desktop, or in Finder view menu, isn't it supposed to be a "view options" option? I used to have it but now I don't. Is it possible that I disabled it by accident? If so, how do I turn it back on?
Also, the hotkey for view options, CMD+J doesn't work either.

The view-option feature can apparently be disabled as a "hidden" Finder preference.  To restore it, you could try the following:
Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities), then copy-paste the following line into the Terminal window and type <Return>. Copy it all as a single line.
defaults write com.apple.finder ViewOptions-immutable -bool false; killall Finder
An alternative approach would be to go to Home>Library>Preferences, move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Desktop, and then log out and log back in.  You would have to reestablish any previous Finder preferences if you did it this way, though, so I would try the Terminal command first.

  • Need to disable adobe updater in reader 10

We deploy adobe reader using the MSI in Group Policy.  We just pushed out Reader X.  We also push out updates the same way
as our users do not have admin rights.  We need to disable automatic updating and checking for updates.  The Customization Wizzard is not available for Reader X yet and the adm file we have for 9 does not seem to work on X.  Anyone have a solution?

Can you simply set registry using your deployment tools?

  • Disable automatic update

How can I Turn off automatic updater and Macafee downloads? I am running it on XP with another antivirus.

Ok thanks. So this will no longer "touch" the songs in my iPod but it will still charge my iPod's battery, right?
My dad wanted to delete the songs I've downloaded that are already in my iPod, so I really need to disable automatic update.
Oh and one more thing: if I want to put new songs in my iPod, how do I do it now that automatic update is turned off?

  • Can't find a 'phantom' unread mail or mark it as being read

I'm using mail on various machines to access an Exchange server account. It generally works with no problems, but on my work MacPro (and only on this computer not the iMac at home, various laptops, iPad, iPhone etc) mail tells me there is an unread message. However, I can't find this message and it's not there when I use a webmail interface to access the same account. No problem, I figured I could just right click on the mailbox and 'mark all messages as read', but this doesn't work! I like to keep a clear inbox with no unread messages and it's driving me nuts!
I'm guessing that there's some strange synching conflict, but don't know how to solve it. Any ideas, please?
    Thanks, Jon.

I tried both, but neither has worked.
    a) Rebuilding the mailbox revealed another unread mail that actually existed, but didn't remove the 'phantom'.
    b) The SM trick uncovered lots of unread news items from Apple, but not the 'phantom'.
Thanks for your help, but I might need to do something more drastic like deleting the account and adding it again.
    Thanks, Jon.

  • Mail marks all messages as important?

    Can I change this.  Thanks.

Exactly. If a couple has both (all) of their email accounts configured on a Mac running Mavericks, so that they can both check their email on that Mac…..
Mavericks Mail will mark ALL copies of an email as read in ALL email accounts configured on that Mac, regardless of which account “reads” the email. Worse yet, it does matter what email server(s) host those accounts. If those email accounts are on an iMAP email server, the messages will appear as read on all other devices configured with any of those accounts — i.e. the email will appear as read on any other Mac, iPad, iPhone, PC….
And as you noted, marking the email as unread only effects that one account. In other words, Mail marks the message as read in all accounts configured on a Mac when you read it in any account. But subsequently marking it as unread in that account, does NOT mark it as unread in any other account.
So a considerate spouse should check the email header of every email they read, to see if the address list contains their spouses email account(s) and go to that account to mark it as unread. Or they can sleep on the couch that night — their choice:(
Note: Mail in iOS 7 on the iPhone/iPad does NOT work this way. It only marks the email as read in the account where it was actually read.
BTW This is just one of many inconsistencies in how Apple’s basic applications (e.g. Mail, Calendars, Contacts, etc.) function in Mavericks - Mac vs iOS7 - iPhone vs iOS7 - iPad. And most of these inconsistencies can not be easy explained away based on screen size or mouse/keyboard vs touch interface. You really have to wonder whether these Apple software development teams ever really talk to one another.
