MAIL vs Eudora - "Queing" possible

I've used EURDORA for Mac since 1996 and indeed have every single eMail sent and received since 5 March 1996. Neat!
But it seems time to start using MAIL - but just wondering if:
1. MAIL can open my old Eudora messages (i.e. can I import some- the most recent, for example)
2. DOES MAIL have the ability to "QUEUE" or put messages on "hold" or "in-line" so that I can write 5-6 messages, then send them all at one time? I like this feature, since I often write an eMail, but want time to reflect on it; perhaps other eMails come-in etc.-- So I write eMails from, say, 2-3pm, then send them all at 3pm for example.
Is this possible to do in Apple's MAIL program?
Also-- will there be problems to anticipate when switching from Eudora?
Does MAIL have a "search" and "find" capability like Eudora? (I can search on the word "breakfast" for example in Eudora, and it will take all "IN" folder messages and search each message and show just those that have breakfast in the title or text-- rather fast, too.
Thanks!
Steve

Hi Stephen, Yes, Eudora will import into Mail. Simple to do. Just quit eudora, open mail, select import and follow the clear instructions. Main has something called "drafts" which is similar to Eudora's queue, but has it's only mailbox. The search and find in mail is far superior to eudora. There are some third party extension that you might find helpful with mail too. Just go to versiontracker and hunt around. Best, R.

The question mark means the computer cannot find a bootable volumes so can;t do anything, That, combined with annoying sounds, strongly suggests a failed hard drive.
You can ask a "genius" at an Apple Rtail Store to test it but I'm pretty sure the drive is kaput. I'm hoping you had your data backed up.

  • I recently switched over to Mail from Eudora

I recently switched over to Mail from Eudora because of problems with Eudora and DSL that remain unresolved. However,I've run into an immediate problem.
I retrieve mail from two locations: Home (DSL and now using Mail) and work (T1 and using Eudora). If I read, reply, and delete my mail from home, with Mail, when I next check my mail at work, all of that mail I've read and deleted appears. Mail seems not to be deleting anything off the actual mail servers. I've deleted, emptied trash, deleted trash, etc., but that mail isn't really gone, and that's not really helpful.
Am I simply missing a setting somewhere? A box that has to be checked that says "Really, no kidding, delete the bleedin' mail"? This is not a problem I've encountered with said competing product.
    Thanks for all advice,
    GF

If for a POP type account, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Advanced tab for the account preferences, is Remove from server after retrieving a message selected and if so, what is your selection below for removing messages from the server?

hello I would like information because I can not seem to download the update from TomTom France because my iphone does not have enough space, so I just bought 20gb on icloud
    What should I do?
Buying 20Gb of storage on iCloud will not give you more space on your device. Perhaps you can cancel that purchase as I don't think you need it.
What you need to do is free up more space on the device by deleting little used apps, movies, etc, until there is enough room for the download and to unpack it. Once the update is installed you will should have room to put back some of the things you removed.
Translated by Google. Hope it makes sense.

  • 550 5.7.1 Authentication Required; Issue sending mail via Eudora 7.1

I know this topic has been covered previously.  I have tried many of the previous suggested solutions but nothing has worked.  I thought I would post a message myself, as my situation might be slightly different.
As of July 31st Eudora 7.1 worked great for me.  I have it on my desktop and prefer it over the alternatives for a variety of reasons.
I went on the road on August 1st.  I tried to access my Verizon e-mail at verizon.net, but using my phone and being all thumbs I got locked out.  I created a new pw and proceeded to send and receive e-mail through verizon.net.
When I returned home I could not send or receive e-mails through Eudora.  I quickly realized that I needed to re-set my Verizon password in Eudora, which I did.  However, that only solved the receiving e-mails issues.  For the past week I have been struggling to get the send function to work, again following the various solutions that apparently worked for others in the past, but to no avail.
It doesn't make sense to me that re-setting my pw would leave a lasting impact on the send function only, but I guess stranger things have happened.  Does anyone have a solution that has worked recently?
    Thank you,
    Jeff

  • Labels possible in Mail (like Eudora or like file / folder labels)

For nearly 14 years I have used Eudora exclusively but am transitioning now. OK but a few things I really miss in Eudora.
One is the ability to give each message a label- and that means a color. I see I can FLAG messages in Mail - but the flag doesn't seem to do anything other than let one group all flagged messages-- and it's just one flag (i.e. similar to giving my Eudora Messages an "A"-Red priority).
But Macs have had the choice of 7 label colors since ?? system 7 I think. Is there any way to label individual messages and have the line turn that color?
OK THERE ARE these Rules in Preferences -- but they are actually more like FILTERS - and while that is really nice-- I've just color coded some things -- text and background-- I also would like to do this manually-- any script here? Or what about creating an ingenious rule that I can apply at will (but it seems rules activate automatically on all incoming eMail messages...)
    Thanks for any comments--
    Best regards,

It was never answered but I found out that you can simply show the colors palette and color like that (background, not text) or use a $30 program MailTags - again background colored in version 2, not the text-- but lots of features in MailTags. Friday 16 October 2009

  • Multiple instances of Mail.app must be possible

I've seen many questions regarding the possibility of running multiple instances of Mail.app as separate processes. There seems to be much good reason to be able to do so, i.e. separating work and private mail, and very little bad reason to do so (maybe some problems when doing upgrades or backups, but I'm not yet sure of this). It also seems that it should not be so hard to do.
So far, using some web acquired wisdom, I've done the following:
    1. Duplicate mail.app:
    sudo ditto Mail.app WorkMail.app
    2. Rename the executable:
    mv /Applications/WorkMail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail /Applications/WorkMail.app/Contents/MacOS/WorkMail
    3. Use Property List Editor to set the following values in/Applications/WorkMail.app/Contents/Info.plist (Apple-S to Save changes!):
    Root/CFBundleExecutable=WorkMail
    Root/CFBundleIdentifier=com.apple.workmail
    Root/CFBundleName=WorkMail
    Root/NSServices/0/NSPortName=WorkMail
    Root/NSServices/1/NSPortName=WorkMail
    Root/NSServices/2/NSPortName=WorkMail
    Root/UTExportedTypeDeclarations/0/UTTypeIdentifier=com.apple.workmail.emlx
    Root/UTExportedTypeDeclarations/1/UTTypeIdentifier=com.apple.workmail.emlx.part
    4. Create the following directories:
    mkdir ~/Library/WorkMail Downloads
    mkdir ~/Library/WorkMail
    4. Launch the 'new' application 'WorkMail'.
    5. Create mail accounts using the application's 'wizard'.
Here is where the first problem is encountered. The new account directories and files are still created at ~/Library/Mail. Navigating to Mail->Preferences->Accounts->[account_name]->Advanced seems to offer the option to change the mail store account directory, but nothing can actually be changed here. So...
    6. Quit WorkMail.
    7. Move newly created account(s) directories (where [newaccountdirectory] is a directory named with the format: [mail_type]-[user]@[domain].[tld]@[pop].[domain].[tld]]) to the correct location:
    sudo mv ~/Library/Mail/[newaccountdirectory] ~/Library/WorkMail/
    8. Use Property List Editor to set the following values in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.workmail.plist (Apple-S to Save changes!):
    /Root/ActiveViewers/0/AttachedMailboxListExpandedItems/[0to_#_ofaccounts]/=~/Library/WorkMail/Mailboxes/...
    /Root/CurrentTransferMailboxPath=~/Library/WorkMail/Mailboxes/...
    /Root/MailAccounts/[0to_#_of_accounts]/AccountPath=~/Library/WorkMail/[new_accountdirectory]
    /Root/MailDownloadsPath=~/Library/WorkMail Downloads
    9. Relaunch WorkMail.
Everything at this point seems to work okay, **BUT** when I launch Mail while WorkMail is launched, I find that I cannot navigate into any mail folders within Mail. I receive an error message indicating that a necessary directory is locked. It seems that the locking mechanism used by the application may be hard-coded to lock ~/Library/Mail, and both instances of the application continue to take this action when launched, making it impossible for both to work harmoniously at the same time. I will conduct more testing and experimentation, but I am not yet capable of editing the application itself. If anyone can take us this last step, I'm sure there are many who would also like to be able to take advantage of the potential functionality.
    Thanks for any input!

Hopefully, there is someone with a programming background who
can take me and other who have posted similar questions through
    the final mile on this...
Well, I do have a programming background, and I must say that it amazes me that someone might want to do what you did to “solve” a problem that IMO doesn’t exist.
What exactly is it that you expect to accomplish by running multiple instances of Mail, and for which neither (1) organizing your mail using multiple mail accounts, custom mailboxes, rules, and/or smart mailboxes, nor (2) setting up separate user accounts, are acceptable solutions? I just don’t get it.
I've seen many questions regarding the possibility of running multiple
instances of Mail.app as separate processes.
I haven’t. Could you please provide a link for such a question, preferably one asked by someone who knew how Mail and Mac OS X work, i.e. a link for a case where there really was such a need?
There seems to be much good reason to be able to do so
I know of no such reasons, neither good nor bad.
i.e. separating work and private mail
I don’t see how that’s a reason to want to run multiple instances of Mail. Could you please elaborate?
Maybe if you tell us what exactly is the problem that you’re trying to solve, instead of focusing on a convoluted “solution” that doesn’t work, we could propose a solution that does...
and very little bad reason to do so
Well, if the fact that it’s so convoluted and doesn’t even work aren’t bad enough reasons, I don’t know what it is...
It also seems that it should not be so hard to do.
I wonder what makes you think so. It does certainly seem hard to me, so hard that I don’t even think it can be done without breaking something, if at all...

  • Cannot connect to smtp sever in Mail or Eudora

    Hi All,
I've been reading the forums all afternoon and although there are a lot of similar problems none exactly like mine (or, no solutions that fixed mine!) After a hard drive failure I'm trying to set up Mail with my godaddy account. I can receive, but not send. In the activity window there are two spinning barber poles:
Delivering message (connecting to server "smtp.secureserver.net")
Checking account (connecting to server "smtp.secureserver.net")
But after a short time a third message blinks something about "writing to disk." It doesn't last long enough to read the details.
I tried the "perfect godaddy settings" I found in another thread but they didn't work. And then (and I suppose this is significant) I gave up and switched to Eudora and the same thing happened- I can receive but not send.
    Any suggestions?

OK, I discarded the reference to the network as well as the half dozen or so smtp servers I've tried over the course of the day. I still can't change the network (airport) password. I type in the new one and get the message NetCfg wants permission to change access permissions of item PPP Password in your keychain" If I click allow, it goes back to what it was. EEEK!
And I still can't send email - same thing, can't connect to SMTP server.
Suppose I just chuck all this and upgrade to leopard (which I was thinking of doing when my hard drive crashed.) Will all these troublesome settings remain or can I start anew?

  • I'm not able to send emails with mail.ru. Receiving and reading is not a problem. When I create a email with mail.ru its not possible to send it although its stored in my mail.ru account as "still to be send". What can it be??

I'm not able to send emails with mail.ru. Receiving is not a problem. Creating a mail is also not a problem and the mail will be stored at mail.ru as still to be send, only problem is its not possible to send. I noticed the buttons for sending change colour when used but they don't perform. What it is?

Don't know what changed, but all of a sudden able to send emails by mail.ru ...... sorry for bothering.

  • Can you block a number from ringing, however still get voice mail.  Is that possible???

There are some folks that call so much and it seems at just the wrong time.  I'd like to able to block them so my phone doesn't ring and yet, still get the voice mails that I can check at a later date when it's convenient.   Is there a way to do that???

Thank you. I thought there was a feature on the phone that allowed for that to happen.
My next question is, however. If I'm texting another party, and the delivered sign is not shown. Is it a possibility that my phone may have been blocked from receiving any texts?
Or, is it possible that the text message did not go through, yet?
Thanks again for answering my inquiry.
    Dawn.

  • Best Practice Mail Authentication not really possible?

    Hi All,
In an effort to clamp down on my security a bit better, I've decided to try and remove all possible Mail auth methods besides Kerberos, Cram-MD5 and APOP. In other words, no Login, PLAIN or Clear.
I have my own Certificate Authority that I give to my users and secure IMAP, POP and SMTP all work well. I've even turned on the submission port (587).
Now, I was hoping that I could have an environment where Login, Plain and Clear are ALL disabled, but still permitted IF done over SSL. I don't see any way of achieving this.
SO, I set my machine to REQUIRE SSL. While this is somewhat satisfactory for IMAP and POP, this cannot be done for SSL as it would then require all external sending mail servers to speak with my server over SSL, which next to none are willing to do.
Last but not least, webmail of course now chokes. I've set it to use port 993 and use SSL but as I'm sure some have guessed, my certificate's common name is not "localhost" and my server is behind a NAT router, so to get webmail to work traffic would have to be routed out my network to the router and back in, otherwise the proper SSL host name doesn't match.
All in all, it's quite a pain!!!
Here's what I'd LIKE to see possible:
    1. Support Cram-MD5 and Kerberos from any IP with or without SSL. This will enable webmail and modern email clients to work.
    2. Support Clear ONLY IF IT IS VIA SSL ("plaintext + TLS" as my logs refer to it). This will enable Treos, PCs running Outlook [Express]. and other non-cram-md5 devices to work WITHOUT compromising on security
    3. Reject Clear, Login and Plain IF IT IS NOT VIA SSL.
    Is this possible?

There is no way to ensure you users are completely unable to send authorization in the clear. You can only take steps to minimize the potential risks. Here are my thoughts.
Again, my answer is sendmail specific but hopefully that points you to what to look for in postfix.
In the m4 config file for sendmail there is the following:
dnl # The following allows relaying if the user authenticates, and disallows
dnl # plaintext authentication (PLAIN/LOGIN) on non-TLS links
    dnl #
    define(`confAUTH_OPTIONS', `A p')dnl
Lines with dnl at beginning are basically comments.
What the above says that defining this option you are going to allow plain text logins but only if the connection is first encrypted with TLS/SSL. Undocumented in the comments, if you delete the "p" then you can have PLAIN text without TLS.
I was actually testing this out this weekend just doing a verification on my server. The results:
    1. No authentication no ssl - Mail.app rejected. Log message on server stated relaying not allowed.
    2. Authentication, no ssl - Mail.app just kept asking me for my password. Server log file showed multiple entries of what amounts to a client connect/disconnect with no traffic.
    3. Authentication, plus ssl - Message sent immediately.
Now, I did not test for number 2 whether the client was actually sending the password to the server and the server was just ignoring. I'm concerned about protecting passwords but more concerned about preventing my server from becoming an open relay. The password may have indeed left the client and traversed the network in the clear.
Optional solutions to take to prevent users from harming themselves.
    1. VPN and two smtp servers. One smtp server that receives mail from the world. One smtp server that only can be connected to via VPN tunnel. VPN smtp server then uses the exposed smtp server as its upstream provider, (I forget the term). This assumes the user remembers to start the VPN before the email client. Without the vpn running, then you run into the possibility I mentioned in #2 above. Maybe there is a setting that could enforce vpn before sending.
    2. https webmail. Only allow access to email via web interface. SMTP authentication is not an issue then since you can have the localhost MTA of the webserver handle sending.
    3. Managed accounts of some sort. So users couldn't turn off ssl auth.
Just some thoughts that I hope provide some ideas for you.
    Cheers
    - Mark
