Everything's been fine with me and Mail.app for the few weeks I've been using it. Last week, however, I noticed that Mail could no longer tell me which messages had been Removed From my Machine (in order to delete them from the server).
Now, Mail wants to download all 1500 messages from my POP server. I noticed this only by accident in the Activity Viewer.
How can I slap Mail and tell it to only download previously un-downloaded messages?

What does "it's not working" mean? It seems to me that it's working pretty well. You deleted it, and now Mail downloads everything still on the server again, which is exactly what deleting that file accomplishes...

Because Mail 2.0 uses a different file than what Mail 1.x used. It was called MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded (without the 2) in Mail 1.x.

By restoring the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file that you deleted previously.
Alternatively, you can choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu located below the list of mailboxes in the main Mail window to open the Account Info window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature. This allows you to selectively remove any messages from the server without having to download them.

Less and Less are the ports and protocols being considered by AV companies and others as everyone uses web mail. Like you, I use ESET and have had no problems with the NOD32 anti virus product. In this day of ubiquitous firewalls in AV products (In my opinion a very bad thing) Only Microsoft products can be expected to work out of the box as the market leading office software vendor. Incomplete Download of Messages from POP Servers

I finally convinced my PC husband to switch over to Mac, and I've been gloating for years about how I'd have him up and running in minutes. Well...I've been working on this problem for days now.
He has two POP e-mail accounts, one for work and one Gmail. I originally set him up in Entourage, but encountered this problem: While all his e-mail from his work account downloaded to his Entourage account, Entourage acts as if Gmail doesn't exist. (The account is set up properly, just like on my own machine, and tests correctly, but when I check mail for the account, I'm told there are 0 messages there.)
Frustrated with Entourage, I then went to set him up in Mail. The Gmail account set up with no problem and downloaded all his messages from there. However, now it's the work POP account that won't function: He has 4000+ messages on his work account server (yeah, he needs to clean out his inbox more often), but Mail has repeatedly (I've started fresh several times) downloaded only 1700 messages, stopping with the most recent being June 2007. And, even though he has brand-new messages sitting on that server, whenever I try to get mail, I'm told there are no new messages.
For both of these problems, I've tried everything that's worked for me in the past, tried everything in the Help sections. I logged onto his office work account directly and even tried marking all messages as unread, but Mail still ignores anything new. I would appreciate anyone giving me some help before my husband says again, as he did last night, "Well, at least I have a nice new Mac typewriter."

Gmail POP access has a lot of idiosyncrasies and doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. In particular, it doesn’t allow the same message to be downloaded more than once by normal means.
As to the other problem you mention, sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require removing one or more messages from the server. Except in the case of Gmail (which, as I said, has its own idiosyncrasies), leaving messages on the POP server indefinitely is a bad idea.
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded by means of Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, you may use the Account Info window to remove specific messages from the server. And if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded and/or the first message not downloaded yet (i.e. the message that Mail appears to be choking on).
You may want to try to download those messages with another mail client such as Thunderbird first, to avoid losing them — and use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import them back into Mail afterwards if you wish.

How to download ALL messages from server - not just NEW messages?

Did you try "WebMail to goto your mail server & Mark all Messages as Unread?", as I mentioned before?
On the Server is where it's kept as to which ones have already been downloaded. I think marking the Unread should do it.

i'm using mail on osx 10.7 with multiple gmail accounts. when i create an email, i check to be sure i'm sending/replying from the correct account. after i send it, somehow it actually sends it from a different account, other than the one i've selected "from." this is evidenced by the reply email i receive. how can i fix this?

From the Mail menu bar, select
          Mail ▹ Preferences...
The Mail preference dialog opens. Select the Composing tab from the row of icons at the top. From the menu labeled
          Send new messages from:
choose
          Account of selected mailbox
Note that this setting may have no effect if you start a new message while a VIP or smart mailbox is selected in the mailbox list. Those are saved searches, not actual mailboxes.
If the problem remains, select the Accounts tab in the preference dialog, then select the affected account in the list on the left.
In the Account Information pane, select the correct server in the menu labeled
          Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
If there's only one server in the menu, select
          Edit SMTP Server List...
and add a new server with the correct settings. If you're not sure how to do that, try the Mail Settings Lookup.
Another possibility is that the wrong card in your address book is selected as yours. Select your card in the Contacts application. Then select
          Card ▹ Make This My Card

Is there a way to check for new emails and download any attachements from MS Exchange Server. I want to check for any new emails from some specific contact, then check if there are any attachments, if any attachments i.e. .txt,.doc,.zip etc. I then want to download and save them on a filesystem. Problem receiving messages from M$ ISA Server...

I'm having a problem receiving messages on our Ironport from a M$ ISA Server cluster at another organization. When they try to send us messages and they leave a specific machine (x.x.169.233) it doesn't work. When the messages leave the other machine (x.x.169.237), it works just fine. However, if the .233 machine gets turned off, the .237 machines then fails to send us messages as well. See the following injection debug logfile for specifics:

It seems to be failing consistently right after the DATA command. Has anyone else seen anything like this? M$ says they don't see anything wrong with the source system and they made vague references to "having problems sending to e-mail appliances in the past".

We've run into problems SENDING to MS servers in the past, when there was a SonicWall TZ170 between them, but I have never had a problem (that I am aware of) RECEIVING from an MS server. The symtoms were sortof similar though. We would send a period on a line by itself to terminate the message, but would never get the 250 Message Accepted message from the MS server. We found out that the TZ170 was dropping the packet. There was a firmware revision released about this time last year for the TZ170 that corrected the issue.
Since this probably isn't exactly the case, but appears similar, you may want to sniff the connection and see if a packet is getting dropped by a firewall/router in the middle.

From which account does the email not send? When sending from an account, the iPad will first try to use the aoutgoing server for that account. If it can't it will try the other accounts listed.in the setting on the iPad for that account. It soulds like the server for the account is not working and that the alternate server is resjecting the messag since it did not originate ffrom the account associated with that server, That is to prevent sending spam.

HT2500 how do i get my mail from the pop server to my inbox

Can someone please help me ! I'm sure I did something by accident and don't know how to fix it. My problem is i don't see any emails in my inbox, however my account info says there is mail on the pop server. how do i get the mail from the pop server to my inbox?

First try rebuilding your Inbox.
Select the Inbox.
Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select Rebuild (last option in list)
Note: If you delete a POP account in Mail, it will delete any messages in the Inbox. It does not delete your custom folders or your sent messages.
If the messages have been deleted and are no longer on the server, you can restore from Time Machine.

Incidentally, my first thought was to map a network share from the NAS to my computer, so that my music files appear on the Z: drive, say on my computer. I could then set up iTunes to store music etc in that folder, and to copy all new items to that folder. However, if I do that, all that'll happen is that on my NAS, the library file will become out of date as I add music to the collection but not to the index.
