Mail what to do about gray rectangle suddenly covering inbox messages

A few days ago a gray rectangle showed up partially covering messages in Mail. This is only in Inbox. There is no gray rectangle when starting a new message or viewing anything else on the device.
Any idea why this is occuring and how to fix problem.
Thanks

Hello there, harvsh.
The following iPad Troubleshooting Assistant has some great all-around steps that might just help:
Apple - Support - iPad - iPad Troubleshooting Assistant
http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/ipad/#section_1
Although all steps are usefull, in the "Restart iPad" section, I would make sure to cover the resetting steps as well:
To reset iPad, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Additionally, in the "Close App" section, I would recommend closing all apps you see there.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

  • OK, what is it about G4 towers suddenly w/o power?

    I got my dual Gigabit Ethernet G4 tower from work when they got rid of Macs about 4 years ago (keep hoping they'll change their minds). When I first got it I had the typical no power problem and a new battery solved the problem (but I had to order it from OWC, the one I got at a local store didn't work).
    Right before Christmas we shuffled furniture around in the family room and unplugged the Mac. Now it's dead again. I've tried two different new batteries (one from OWC), I've done the simple reset and the sit for 30 min reset and the sit overnight reset and the take out all the ram and the cards reset. Still nothing.
    Now, it appears I'm getting something from the power supply because when I had everything plugged in, the monitor was showing that it was getting power. Does that mean that it's more likely the motherboard than the power supply?
    I know it's had a good long life, but I'm really sorry to see it go. I got a good deal on a core2 duo Mac Mini. I think the g4's likely dead; if the problem is the power supply, it's going to be a bear (and $$$) to replace, and although I see motherboards on eBay for a good price, I know I could get that in, struggle to figure out how to replace it, and the darn thing still might not work. Plus the motherboard I just purchased would also be like 8 years old.
    So...what is it about G4 towers and suddenly not starting up? I see this problem frequently on the support boards. I love Apple (right now I'm stuck on a Vista laptop and...ugh), and I know that this tower had a long life, but doggone, why do they just suddenly drop dead without any warning?

    If you have a meter, unplug the AC power plug from the wall and wait a minute, then measure the battery in the holder, working. If you do not see 3.2 Volts or higher, the battery, regardless of its history, is not working.
    After fiddling with any Hardware, you should press the tiny reset button for a quarter minute \[with the Mac nominally off, but the AC power plug plugged in]. Then wait at least five seconds before proceeding. Avoid momentary presses, they can crash the microprocessor that controls the clocks and drain your battery in a day. If nothing seems to change, do the procedure again.
    If you still have no response, disconnect the drives, remove everything except the processor and memory, do a reset, and try for a startup chime.
    If no chime, use this diagram to look for Standby Power on pin 9 of the main DC power connector:

    after upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?

    First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
    To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left).

  • Since upgrading to OS X 10.8.2 a few days ago, Safari will suddenly zoom in on web pages (happens on multiple sites) when I scroll or move the mouse -- any one know why and what to do about it? Thanks.

    Since upgrading to OS X 10.8.2 a few days ago, Safari will suddenly zoom in on web pages (happens on multiple sites) when I scroll or move the mouse -- any one know why and what to do about it? Thanks!

    It really isn't a well thought out 'gesture' when a normal scroll action can result in an unwanted zoom but disabling SmartZoom wasn't an option for me—one of those with eyes that tire easily when reading very small text on a 27" display.
    For a while I used command-+ and command-'-' to read small text but that isn't supported in some apps and for Safari it often leaves the browser in an less than perfect state when moving to the next page.  I also tried option scroll to zoom the whole display but that was not desirable, either.
    I finally settled on leaving SmartZoom enabled and remembering to double tap with one finger whenever the undesired zoom happens. It happens so often that the double tap is almost a reflex action for me.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    It sounds like there is an issue receiving emails with the Mail app on your iPhone. The article below provides a lot of great troubleshooting tips and will resolve most issues like the one you've described.

  • I just wrote about not being able to send messages on my IPad.Someone responded-thanks-I did what they said and now I have no sent mail category.Help!!!!

    I just wrote about not being able to send messages on my IPad.Someone wrote back,thanks,about going to settings,outgoing mail etc. and I did that.Now I have no sent mail category.Help.

    When you reset the password, you need to enter the password into the outgoing server setting again. I have reset my email passwords a couple of times and I had to enter the password into the outgoing server setting before I could send mail again.
    Did you try that? If you did try it, did you try sending an email? You can send yourself an email to test it.

  • All emails in Mail print with a light gray background.

    Since upgrading to Mountain Lion all the emails I print from Mail shows with a light gray background.
    How can I change that?
    The printouts just look dirty.

    Hi Eric,
    Thanks for writing!
    I'm on 10.8.5 which is the latest update.
    I have an HP Laserjet which is about 8 years old. I tried printing out this page and it showed gray. Also went to webmail and the same thing happened. But it didn't happen in InDesign.
    Do you have any idea what's causing this?
    Thank you!

  • International Roaming and Whats it all about.

    Roaming and what’s it about?Roaming is when you are no longer able to Pick Up your home Network (O2-UK). This is normally when you are in another country. However it is possible to pick up French Network when in UK and the Irish Networks when you’re still in Northern Ireland.  But if you phone is displaying anything else beside O2-UK or BT Cellnet (On Some Older Phones), then you are Roaming on a Foreign Network and Roaming Charges will apply if Services are used. Is O2-IE the same as O2-UK?Answer is no. O2-IE is a completely independent business to O2-UK and therefore Roaming Charges would apply.O2-IE (O2 Ireland) and O2-UK (O2 United Kingdom) are both Part of the Telefonica Group, but this is all and is 2 Separate businesses  Do I need to Activate Roaming?If you are an O2 PAYG Customer then Roaming is activated automatically as you can only spend what you have in Credit.O2 Contract customers may need to call 202 to confirm they have Roaming Activated on their account if they have never used the service before or had issues in the past.  How does Roaming Work?When you travel outside your Home Network, your Mobile Phone Sim will ask the Roaming (Foreign) network first if it can use the services on their Network. (You IMEI number of your phone is also sent to verify it’s not the Stolen / Missing Database as well) The Foreign Network will take details from your Sim card and go back to the International Centre and check if O2 has an agreement first to use the Network and then if the Sim card is activated to use the Roaming. (This is why there is a delay sometimes in first switching on your mobile to you getting a signal and a Network Name) If all comes back ok, then the Sim will receive instruction and you notice the Roaming Network Name shown on your phone. What you may not know is that when the phone is authorised to use the Roaming Network, It is given a temporary allocated foreign number of the country you are visiting. So you may have someone calling you and they may notice that the Ring tone suddenly sounds different in their Earpiece and not like the UK Ring. This is because of the Foreign Number allocated and that you are roaming on their Countries Network. One this you will never know though is the Temporary Roaming Number as this is only a Forward number and changes.  So what charges do you pay for when roaming?Making Calls?                     Yes you pay for all of the Call.Receiving Calls?                                Yes you pay for the Roaming country Inbound Part of the Call.Sending a SMS?                                Yes you pay to send a SMS.Receiving a SMS?             No it’s free to receive a SMS.Sending a MMS?              Yes you pay to send a MMS.Receiving a MMS?           You may be charged for Data Usage to receive the MMS ( I never have on O2, But I know other UK networks charge)Data Usage                         Is all chargeable  The Person who is Calling or Texting you from the UK. This is where a lot of confusion becomes and people become worried regarding charges.                        Simple Fact to Remember:Even though the person you are contacting is abroad. You are still only calling their UK Mobile Number. So treat it as they are still in the UK. So for example: If you have free UK Text allowance, it will still be Free (Your Texting a UK mobile Number)If you have Free UK Minutes, then again you are calling a UK Mobile Number, so it will use your UK Minutes Allowance.If you don’t have Free Allowances, then you will be charged at your normal standard Rate of ringing a UK or Texting a UK Mobile number  Couple of Questions and Answers that may come in useful: Q)   I’m abroad and my friend is abroad, will I be charged to contact my friend as I’m only calling a UK Mobile numberA)   Yes, even though you are calling a UK Mobile Number. You are not in the UK and the person you are calling isn’t, so you will pay the Roaming Charges to make the call and the person who is receiving the call will pay the inbound part of the charge Q)   Why am I charged twice for Voice Mail Messages?A)   When someone tries to contact you and you don’t answer, the call is then passed back to the O2-UK voice mail as a return call, So you pay for the Return part of the call even though you didn’t answer your Mobile. Then when you want to listen to your voice mail, you pay to make the call and listen to it. So this is where Double Charges apply Q)   Why are inbound SMS free when I’m abroad?A)   This was set by the EU Telecoms Parliament, that any EU Mobile Company must allow their users to allow incoming SMS for Free anywhere in the world. Q)   What is the Difference between Roaming and Home Networks?A)   Your home network is in your network where you purchased the Sim from. So if you purchased your Sim card in the UK and from O2, your home network would be O2-UK and you would be allocated a UK Mobile number.Roaming is when you are no longer on your home network. So for example you go to Spain and you pick up Telefonica ES. This mean you are Roaming on a Spanish Network. If you have any other questions please ask and I will gladly try to answer them and will keep editing the 1st thread to make it easier for everyone to read.

    All calls to the UK to landline numbers use the international code +44 and drop the first zero. I purchased a used 2008 iMac. And although the previous owner said he deleted all of his information, his iCloud account is still the primary. I don't have a clue about what to do about it. I signed him out and logged in with my info, but still no go. Is there any way to eliminate his iCloud account and make mine the primary without rebooting it back to factory settings? There was an update, I believe, that I couldn't install because i didn't have his password that is what made me aware that his acct. was still active. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
    The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
    How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
    To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
    If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
              OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
              The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
              You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
    In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

    Reset Security Questions
         There are several different methods. Try one. If it doesn't work,
         then try the next one. Don't try to do everything at once.
    Frequently asked questions about Apple ID
    Manage My Apple ID
    Note: you may need to continue entering false answers to the questions until you trigger the response needed to start making changes. It will take six or nine retries.
    Or you can email iTunes Support at iTunes Store Support.
    If all else fails:
      1. Go to: Apple Express Lane;
      2. Under Product Categories choose iTunes;
      3. Then choose iTunes Store;
      4. Then choose Account Management;
      5. Now choose iTunes Store Security and answer the bullet questions, then click
          Continue;
      6. Sign in with your Apple ID and press Continue;
      7. Under Contact Options fill out the information and advise iTunes that you would
          like your security/challenge questions reset;
      8. Click Send/Continue.
    You should get a response within 24 hours by email.
    In the event you are unsuccessful then contact AppleCare - Contacting Apple for support and service.
    Another user had success doing the following:
    I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
    Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
          tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
          "done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
          Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
          should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
          selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
          should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
    It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
    Good Luck friends!

  • How to get rid of red rectangle in gray rectangle cropping box?

    A little box has appeared on the right side of the preview screen. It has a small red rectangle in a larger gray rectangle. You can move around the red rectangle to crop the frame.
    The problem is, I don't want to crop the frame! How do I get rid of the red rectangle thing?
    I've tried the "crop" button and read the documentation about cropping but there's no mention of this red rectangle. I looked at the project settings and it looks good (1920x1080).

    Thomas Kehoe wrote:
    ... You can move around the red rectangle to crop the frame.
    no, you don't crop the video.
    It is just shown, when you set your preview window to a setting which doesn't 'fit'. Then, the red rectangle indicates which part of the whole frame you see; or, drag it to a part you like to see.
    Set your  Preview window to a smaller size (like '50%' or simply 'fit') = no red cross rectangle.
    for cropping, use the cropping tool
