Mail will not allow messages to send...

So I have 2 POP accounts in Mail that I recently set up. Both receive mail without any issues, however, neither will send mail. Both outgoing servers are correctly typed in the outgoing server preference, and also I have selected that no authentication is necessary. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Chris

Hi Ernie,
One of them isn't for sure, the other I'm not sure about. The ISP I am using is actual an ethernet on the campus of the lab I work in as a grad student. One of the email addresses uses the SMTP of this school (ie, its a school email account, so I imagine it is as close as I could get to an SMTP native to the ISP). I have pinged both outgoing mail servers, and they are on and active according to the pings. There is no firewall on according to my sharing preferences. How do I check for freedom of movement on port 25?

I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account (3 email addresses). Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my accounts every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail (the message says that the outgoing server was rejected. I cannot edit the outgoing server, and the keychain will not save my passwords (the ports are valid). How can I change the outgoing server to send emails, and how can I avoid having Mail request my passwords every 2 minutes? Verizon, as usual, will not provide support to iMacs.

Is there an email saved in your drafts or outbox folder?  I suspect that Mail is continually trying to send it, and each time Google is rejecting the email message.
You can open the message and then delete it from your Outbox folder.  Then try removing all @gmail email addresses from it and seeing whether you can send to the other folks.  I suspect that will work.
With email, if an SMTP server *can* verify email addresses, sometimes it will and it will refuse to send messages.  If a message has to be relayed across servers, no verification is done, and you'll get a bounce if an email address is bad.

  • Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened

Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened... the blue dot will NOT go away, no matter how many times I open the e-mail.
It's a simple pop account. I AM able to mark messages read with the message menu item (mark as read.) I also have nothing synced with it, no iPhone, no IMAP accounts, no .mac account, nothing.
But this is a real pain to have to do manually, when it used to happen automatically upon clicking the e-mail, it opening in a window to read, and then closing it.
All was working fine up until the 10.5.7 update. I hoped the 10.5.8 update would fix the problem, but no change. Everything else is working perfectly (I do the permissions repair/disk verify procedure before and after each update.)
Can't seem to find anyone else with this problem in here either, through search or just going through hundreds of messages.

    Okay, then lets try this:
    1. Select all your messages in the Inbox; then use the contextual menu or the Message > Mark menu to mark them all as Read.
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
    4. Restart Mail, wait for the index to rebuild and retrieve any new email you might have, and see if the problem contineus. Hopefully it will not.

  • MAIL will not allow iCloud alias to receive mail

I am not a novice. I have been on iCloud (sadly) since July 2011. Today I tried to activate an email alias which was transferred into iCloud. It's valid and has been for years, but not activate since I migrated to iCloud.
Every time I set up the existing alias in MAIL I get the error "invalid incoming mail server."  I have used the Apple recomendation to use imap.mail.me.com.  When it comes time to exist ACCOUNT under Mail PREFERENCES, it will never SAVE changes as the incomding mail server information is grayed out and goes back to "example" and is not accessible.
I have also entered p99-imap.mail.me.com with the same result.
Two hours of going to icloud.com or managing my apple id online have brought exactly the same result.  Although the alias shows as activated under icloud.com and although it is accepted by MAIL, the message is always the same (invalid incoming mail server) and the account change can never be saved in MAIL.

I have a business with MobileMe accounts and we are going to be forced to migrate to icloud in a few months. I have nightmares about it alraedy.
Since Apple doesn't give a good cr*p about this, I humbly ask if there is anyone who really knows what is going wrong and how to work around it?
Again: I migrated to icloud with my apple id in July 2011.  MAIL will NOT set up my icloud alias as it always grays out the incoming mail server and returns the error "invalid incoming mail server" and will not even allow me the save the information.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Hi Roger
    Thank you for your suggestions.
I already have an ALIAS set up and receiving emails in my main INBOX under the alias name. It is a MobileMe alias from my separate business mac account.  It has worked as a separate "account" under MAIL for 10 years. It is an ALIAS, not a main identity mac account. The System Preference panel is ACCOUNTS, not aliases, so I use the word "account" when I speak of setting up a new inbox with a different name and password whether that is an iCloud alias or a gmail account.
We may be talking about the same thing but I'm not using a word you use.  I am allowed 3 icloud mail aliases. I am allowed 5 mail aliases under my business mac account. On my mac MAIL I already have three separate "accounts" or inboxes:  (1) my private mac ID account  (2) my business MAC account  (3) an alias from my business account. All three have different passwords. None of the three gets emails sent the other two "accounts."
Maybe I just don't get "icloud." I certainly got "MobileMe" in the past. The alias that is currently working as a separate "account" or "identity" under MAIL is proof of that.
I am going to delete the "alias account" from MAIL and call it a day. For me, iCloud is commensurate with Windows ME in the history of computing: a stupid change that resulted in nothing but aggravation for everybody who was dumb enough to sign up for it.  I won't be signing up for the next "big thing" from Apple. I'm sure there are tens of thousands of other users who feel equally "used" by Apple on this.
I'm marking the question ANSWERED and closing the thread.  iCloud is iCrap and nothing I've experienced with it in six months has changed that opion and the fact that you can get a gmail account operating in MAIL in 2 minutes but you can't get an iCloud email alias working in five hours is just more fuel on that bonfire.
Thank you again for your couresty and your time.  I doubt if my business account, which has to be downgraded to iCloud in a few months, will function at first and I doubt if the 10-year-old alias on that account will continue to function in MAIL.
    Mike

I am pressing the hold key and it does not work so I cannot get through! Can some one please help as I am losing the will. Never had trouble before. Grrrrrrrrr!

  • Mail will not allow me to add a new account.

Mail will not all me to set a an email/note account. The entry fields, ID and password clear onceI press the enter key.

I had tried that previously with no results. So, I changed the password with the provider. Sometimes it's necessary to change the playing field, rather than put up with the potholes. Thanks for your help.

  • Mavericks mail will not allow me to add a gmail account

    Help!
I am using running OSX Mavericks, including the new version of Mail 7.0 (1822). I cannot add a GMail account. Going through Mail: Preferences: Accounts, I give the information, but then get told:
There was a problem setting up the account.
Unable to verify account name or password.
If I click ok (the only option), Mail quits, so I cannot use the Connection Doctor to see what else is happening.
All my other programs that access the internet work, and I can access google calendar, for example, via BusyCal.
There must be something simple happening.... By the way, Mavericks Mail works perfectly on my machine at work!
    Suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    Roger

I had the same issue...I called apple support and they gave me the following instructions. Seems to be working perfectly fine.
    - Go to Apple Mail
    - Hit on Preferences, go to Accounts and hit the "+" button
    - Select "Add other mail account", and hit continue
    - Enter your Full Name, email address, and password (DO NOT HIT CREATE)
    - Push down the option key, and while holding down the option key hit "NEXT"
    - It will route you to the Incoming Mail Server Info window, here you will type in the Mail Server as: imap.gmail.com. Again type in your user name (complete email) and password. And again, hold down the option key, and while holding down the option key hit "NEXT".
    - Then it wil route you to the Outgoing Mail Server. Type in the Outgoing Mail Server as: smtp.gmail.com, and again your email and password.
    -Hit Create
Once you see the email account on your Apple Mail sidebar, go to compose a new message and send yourself an email to the new email account from your new email account
This worked for me and synced all my folders. Hope it works for you as well.

  • "mail" will not dowload messages from server

My "mail" program has been working fine until today. Now it will not download my messages from the server. I have made no changes what so ever in the settings and I have reviewed them & they seem ok. Being a rather new (6 mo) to mac I have no idea where to start. I have a duo intel 20 and when I switch to Outlook Express in windows no problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have it set to check for mail every 5 min. Also I can send ok. Jim Johnston

    Hi Jim
I have a similar problem. Mail stopped receiving messages from the server on Tuesday afternoon around 4pm. I can see the messages on the server via a webmail page, so I know messages are there.
    Strange twists:
1 if i rebuild the inbox, Mail will fetch all the mails from the server - but only those dating from before c4pm last Tuesday - the later ones stay on the server and are not fetched
2 ditto if I trash the preference file for received mail (as recommended in other posts) - again, it will fetch all mails up until c4pm on Tuesday, and no later
3 ditto if I trash the entire account, and then add a new account with the same settings - again, it will fetch messges only from before c4pm on Tuesday
4 my dotmac mails are set to forward to the server/account in question. Mail will fetch all of these successfully from the server - even those dating from after c4pm on Tuesday - so what am I to make of that?! The account and server are identical to the one in points 1-3 above.
I have (of course) contacted my ISP and they are mystified - they said they'll get back to me, but that was 36 hours ago and no news yet...
I read somewhere that filling the HD can have weird knock-on effects on Mail. My HD did temporarily fill as I was importing my iTunes library from my backup disk (I got the warning that the library wouldn't fit, so I cancelled the entire operation and actually imported nothing at all). I still have more than 6GB free on the HD.
I can send mails successfully using the account/server/ISP in question.
    Can anyone help?

  • Mail will not open message viewer or drafts

Hello.  I work on a 27" IMac 2.66 GHz 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running Mavericks 10.9.5.  Since installing the latest update mac mail has been running VERY slowly, even lagging substantially as I type.  Then in the last couple of days it has seemingly launched but no windows, no message viewer are visible.  I can quit it or force quit or restart the computer but it still will not open any windows.  I tried shutting off iCloud mail sharing yesterday and lo and behold it worked again.  But today although iCloud mail remains shut off it will not open.  I have opened the console and here are the recent messages:

  • Yahoo e-mail will not allow me to add contacts and will not auto fill e-mail addresses, and now I'm having trouble downloading Adobe documents from my bank. All of these problems can be solved by using Internet Explorer, but I prefer Firefox.

I get an error message when trying to add new contacts and it is suggested I try back later, also when sending an e-mail the address I wish to send an e-mail to will no longer auto-fill. This has been a problem for sometime, maybe a month. The last problem I had was trying to download my March bank statement, in Adobe. If I switch to Internet Explorer I can accomplish these tasks. I am using Yahoo on both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Check the Ethernet connection to the AirPort Express. Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the Comcast modem is connected to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort Express. The WAN port is the one with the circle of dots shown over the port.
It sounds like you are connected to the Ethernet LAN port.

Apparently TalkTalk mail will work with Firefox 4 and Firefox 5 ''if'' you set the browser to ''lie'' to TalkTalk mail by saying that you are still using version 3.6.
You can find the instructions for that in a post on the TalkTalk forums: [http://www.talktalk.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=185113#post2452787 Firefox 4 & TalkTalk webmail - Forums].

  • Mail will not receive messages

Shortly after installing Security Update 2011-005, Mail stopped receiving messages on all three of my accounts (two Gmail IMAP accounts and one Microsoft Exchange 2007 account).
Mail will seemingly download the messages and show progress in the lower left display panel as usual, but even though it appears as though the messages were successfully downloaded they never appear in my inbox.
I've checked all the account settings, but nothing seems to be wrong..
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Naomi

I would recommend removing all three account, although you could probably do it one account at time, and then adding them back.  Since the messages for all three account reside on the server, nothing will be lost.  With the setting to Keep copies for Offline viewing, it will take a good bit of time for all messages to again download to the computer, so I would change to not keep copies for Offline viewing -- you can always change that later.
The problem may simply be with indexing the mailboxes to display these messages, and this will correct that, if so.
