Mail will not close without a "Force Quit"

Dear Friends,
My iMAC OS 10.5.4 mail program has malfunctioned ever since I opened it to access mail via my e-mail service provider during which time the power failed. After power was restored, the mailboxes of other accounts on the computer continue to function normally as does my mac.com account on the same Mail program. Now when I open the Mail program the spinning wheel on my internet services account continues to spin and my mail program will only close when I use the Force Quit command. Opening the mail program on other accounts causes no problem. I have reset my preferences, used the utility program, reset the internet service provider mail settings and rebooted the computer without success. Any ideas?

Many others have the same problem. Please see this thread for some potential remedies. For the record, none of them have worked for me. Please post if you find a solution that does work.

• Keep getting deleted emails back and mail will not close, have to force quit

i have 4 emails that will not stay deleted.I will delete them and as soon as i reopen my mail they come back. Its as if they never left. Then i can't close my mail.i have to force quit. I have read of other problems close to mine and tried there solutions with no success.I do not know if my setting in pref. are correct or not. This problem is not allowing me to recieve new emails i just keep getttting these same 4 back time after time. very frustrating.

You're welcome.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
In order to fix the problem, we'll have to re-create Envelope Index. The thing is, Mail may choke on those messages while re-creating the index, so either be prepared for that or perform optional steps 1 and 3:
1. (Optional, but recommended). Assuming this is a POP account, in the Finder go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/, and identify the *.emlx files associated with the troublesome messages. Viewing the *.emlx files as List in the Finder showing the creation/modification date may help. Just identify them; do not get rid of them yet (you must quit Mail first).
2. Quit Mail.
3. (Optional, but recommended). Move to the Trash the troublesome *.emlx files found in step 1.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
5. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
6. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate Deleted Messages.mbox, and move it to the Trash. I assume there is nothing to be preserved there.
7. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

• Address Book Opens Automatically and will not close (even with Force Quit)

The address book automatically opens at times and I cannot close it. Even with a force quit, I cannot close it. It takes up over 80% of CPU cycles when it opens automatically. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks
Robby

This is happening to me too. Has occurred on MBP 17" about six or seven times over the past couple of weeks. Have not been able to replicate it. But recently suspect that it may be related to auto syncing and/or syncing my iPhone 3G.
Anyone else have an idea?

• July 18,2011 AOL toolbar update install. I cannot open Firefox to uninstall the update or the toolbar because everytime I open Firefox it freezes and jams up. I have to shut down my computer as it will not even respond to force quit command

July 18,2011 AOL toolbar update install. I cannot open Firefox to uninstall the update or the toolbar because everytime I open Firefox it freezes and jams up. I have to shut down my computer as it will not even respond to force quit command. I cannot read my mail (aol) or access my bookmarks all for work.

Try the Firefox SafeMode.
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
# You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
# Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
You should be able to uninstall that AOL toolbar extension while running in the Firefox SafeMode.

• Mail will not close how do I close mail so I can shutdown my iMac?

i just bought my first 27 inch imac a few weeks ago, I am a apple convert, today my mail will not close, the close mail tab is greyed out in to top task bar, and I tried to right click on the app and close that way but no go. is there yet a third way to shut down mail that I am not aware of as I can not turn off the imac until mail is closed, miss the force shutdown tab in pcs

Use cheng5543's suggestion first. You can also Force Quit applications by clicking the Apple symbol in the upper left of the screen and choosing Force Quit and then choose the app to Force Quit.

• Mail will not close

My mail app will not quit I have tried to quit it but it just makes a beep sound and then will not close. I can't shut down because mail keeps stopping the shut down. Any help would be appreciated.

command-option esc. Try hitting those keys and see if Mail will quit. You can always do a forced shut down by holding down the power button. Sounds like directory issues. Insert your OS installer disk and reboot while holding down the 'c' key. Do Repair Disk from Disk Utility.

• Apple Mail will not work without webmail login

Spontaneously 2 weeks ago I got a triangle next to my Apple Mail Inbox and could neither send nor receive email. I have used ATT for DSL and my email address for over two years without this problem. I have checked all my settings with ATT and they claim they have even "rebuilt" my mailbox and all is good. But unless I use a browser to log into webmail first, Mail will not work. The user name/password/port info is all correct, but Mail cannot connect. Even when the "keep me logged in" box is checked when I log in to webmail, Mail will stop working if I close out the browser and put the computer to sleep. This is driving me crazy.

I've had what sounds very similar issue with another DSL ISP: Qwest.
Ran both Comcast & Qwest simultaneously (alternately, not really concurrently)
for awhile & got sporadic blips & failures to connect.
I never could establish conclusively whether it was the ISP, or a local client problem.
I think its the ISP. Had other email annoyances with them that never quite got resolved
Sometimes my mail was left on the webmail server & never got delivered & would do so, same as you describe.
Its never anyone's fault, or problem...
I doubt they'd tell you if it was an issue on their end, if it not resolved.

• Third party software will not close without a soft reset.

I have a few third party software utilities/games that do not want to close without a soft reset, some show a white screen and others just will not close. Should I uninstalll these and reinstall them? My grandson has the same utilities on his Treo 650 without these problems. My phone is the Treo 700p.
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)

I would try uninstalling and reinstalling the software. If this does not work, you may want to check if there are updates or newer versions of this program and be sure to check the compatibility.
I hope this helps,
-Pat

• MB Pro 13" 10.6.8 Will not shut down after force quit everythin

MB Pro 8,1 OS 10.6.8
Computer froze while Sophos Anti-Virus was updating. I force-quit everything. Finder would not restart. Used the Shut Down command from the apple menu, everything went well until I reached the background-picture-only stage of shutdown. It froze there and the power button is inop. Shows options to shut down or restart, but will do neither.
IDEAS?

Sometimes after an update, you may have to wait awhile for it to shut down. The other day I was about to force mine to quit after waiting around 2-3 minutes. Finally it shutdown. After rebooting, it's working fine now.
You maybe just didn't give it enough time to finish what it was doing before shutdown.

• Safari will not fully open, cannot force quit...

Hi Guys,
Needing help with Safari (currently posting from firefox :()...
On saturday I tried to load up the A-Z list on QuickSilverScreen.com (particularly heavy page) and safari froze completely. left it for a few minutes, but nothing happened and i wasn't able to select anything on the screen, so i had to hold the power button to restart the computer.
when it powered back up i tried to load it again, but all that happened was the browser window opened, but nothing loaded and i was left with the spinning beach ball...and once again was unable to force quit.
things i've tried:
- downloading/re-installing safari
- deleting the history manually
- removing the .plist file from the library and re-starting (onto desktop, at advice of apple tech support)
- when re-starting P, R, Cmd, Alt to clear something...
none of these have worked....anyone got any ideas?

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Check to see how much free disk space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
If disk space isn't the issue, try logging into another user account and try Safari there.
Also, go to ~/Library/Safari and move the Downloads.plist file to the Trash. Try relaunching Safari in the effected account.

• Mail will not send messages and dropbox quit syncing

I have a newer macbook pro with all updated current software. In the last 24 hours, I can't send an email. I can (and have) received email, but can't send any.
I first noticed this when trying to send a share invite on dropbox to a specific folder of pictures. It wouldn't go. Now I have come to realize all mail is incoming only and dropbox is no longer syncing across to my iphone with the new folders.
I deleted dropbox on my phone, reloaded. Still set on previous folder structure sans new pics
I deleted my mail account on icloud under mail/preferences, reset that with current everything.
Nothing. Just not sending emails.
I tried the connection doctor, it is showing that all outgoing communication links are not working (smtp?). Not sure what to make of that.
I've changed nothing other than to keep everything updated. Not sure I've even loaded in any new updates in about 5 days maybe?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert

I did all of the above. Internet connections show green as usual. No changes there.
I tried speedtest.net just to see if it pings and shows usual upload/download speeds, yep. Good to go there.
I can get online and do what I want to do. I can upload to facebook.
I was using Aperture 3 (recent updated version) to upload pictures to drop box and facebook. I'm wondering if there is some kind of conflict? As I look back, the moment when email and dropbox quit playing nice was right after I exported a fair number of pics to dropbox. Not sure why that would have anything to do with it, but it fits the timing perfectly.
I also turned off my icloud account, turned it back on and allowed everything to resync.
I've been sending test emails. I have a large number of emails sitting in the outbox, just waiting for what I don't know. I was really hoping the router reset would help.
Seems to be localized to mail and dropbox.
I'm open to any feedback and thoughts.
Thanks,
Robert

• Can't shut down Firefox without using Force Quit

Firefox 3.6.9 on Mac OSX 10.5.8
will not close without using Force Quit
doesn't matter what website I am on or what I am doing

This problem persists with Firefox 3.6.16.
Moreover, force quit itself, via cmd-opt-esc, may fail.
As of last night, I was able to force quit via Activity Monitor.
As of today, the cmd-opt-esc force quit hangs, and Activity Monitor does not show the Firefox process.

• TS3276 Mail will not quit

Mail will not give the option to quit. Cannot turn off computer without closing mail but it will not highlight that option so that it can be clicked on. Any suggestions?

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu and close it from there.

If you think there is a genuine problem with firefox
* see [[high memory usage]] <-- clickable link --
that contains some tips and information about memory usage
* go to ''about:memory'' by keying that into the location bar
the report that is generated may be of help - it gives tooltip info on mouseover of items, and has a button that tries to reduce memory usage
