Mail will not go out

I have several email accounts, including google and use two servers for outgoing mail, one a cable comlany and the other google. They have worked well for years.I recently upgraded to 10.8.4 and now I cannot send out email. I deleted all accounts, reset them and tried all sorts of other tricks. Diagnositcs shows green dots and says the connections are good. But the mail will not deliver. I am circuvmenting right now by going onlne with google. I reasd some discussion about ports and am wondering if there is a special port number. Or, has Apple screwed up and has yet to come up with a bug fix?

Step 1
Take this step only if you have more than one incoming mail account, and only some of them are affected by the problem.
From the Mail menu bar, select
Mail ▹ Preferences ▹ Accounts
From the account list on the left, choose one of the accounts that is not giving trouble. Select the Account Information tab if not already selected, and then uncheck the box marked
Enable this account
Repeat with each of the other well-behaved accounts. Don't disable the problem accounts.
Step 2
From the Mail menu bar, select
Window ▹ Connection Doctor
Click the Show Detail button. A drawer opens. Try to send a message and post the text that appears. Anonymize any personal information before posting.
Step 3
If you took Step 1, re-enable the disabled accounts.

  • Mail will not send out mail... but I can recieve?

Hey guys, well yesterday my mac mail would not send out any mail, and still won't this morning. I am using AOL mail through the Mac mail program. I have been using it forever and never had a problem.
It is telling me "cannot send message using the server smtp.aol.com:(myusername). Sending the message content to the server failed. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click try later."
I have 3 email accounts I use through mac mail and all 3 are not working. To send mail I have to sign into aol and it stinks. Can anyone help me to figure out why this just quit working?
    Thanks

ISPs often change things on a whim; they aren't known for being the most communicative bunch of people. But if you're sure you have your Mail settings entered correctly for your AOL account:
Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com or imap.aim.com (if using IMAP)
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.aol.com
In the Account name: box, type your AOL® or AIM® screen name.
In the Password: box, type your AOL® or AIM® password.
and it still doesn't work, I'd call your ISP and see what's going on; they can determine whether or not you're able to get outside their network.

  • Mail will not send out e-mails from my gmail smtp server

I am using Mail to send and receive e-mails. I have 3 different accounts that I use, of which two are GMail acounts. These two acounts receive e-mails as normal, but upon replying or otherwise sending out e-mail it refuses to send. It appears that the SMTP server is offline. I have re-entered my credentials etc, but this did not fix the problem. Can anyone help me to get over this annoying issue?
I am running OSX 10.10.1 Yosemite

I am experiencing the same issue. All has been working fine & it just suddenly started today. OSX 10.10.1 Exactly as you describe. I have the same email account settings on my iPad & have no problems there, only on my Mac with 10.10.1

  • Since iOS 7.0 my mail will not go out through secondary server

I have 2 domains hosted with an isp that does not allow smtp from off net. So I have always had my gmail account set up as a second outgoing server for my iphone for when im on att data. Since ios 7.0 all the way through 7.1 now it has not worked. Fails to roll to my gmail account. I have tried removing all accounts and re-setting them back up, and complete restore to factory and re-setting up. my gmail works fine for gmail, and my other accounts work fine when on home wifi, but neither will roll to the secondary mail server. And I know of at least 40 other's that have this same problem. till now I kept hoping that the next update would fix, but then it occured to me that apple may not know about this issue. Is their a fix in sight?

As said in the first post, that's the first thing I did. But just in case tried again and it still just won't type letters/numbers... For everything except the 4 digit pairing code.
It's really strange, wondering if it's something to do with the update as someone's I know is doing a very similar thing.
Have also already changed the batteries once since getting it less than a month ago.
Thanks very much for your prompt reply tho autocorrect doing a science degree is a nightmare - chemokines = cheekiness lol

  • I have a yahoo mail account address - Mail will not work with that?

I tried to mail an email using my Yahoo mail account address. Mail sent it back to me saying that Yahoo rejected it.
Do I just keep using mailing from Yahoo instead of Mail to keep things working?
When I click on an e-mail address Mail does come up as my default mail program. How can I change that back to Yahoo using Safari? I've asked that question of Yahoo, but they just tell me to use Firefox, which I do not want to do. I like Safari and will simply fight the Mail program back if I have to. There must be a way to get it under control though - I hope.
I do use Mail to back up notes from my iPhone. It does work for that just fine.
    TIA,
    Ken

"Second Step: Launch Mail/Preferences/General/Default email reader and choose Google Notifier.app from the list. Now the mailto links will also bring up a blank email, ready for you to fill out and send by using your Gmail account. "
Here is Mail getting in the way again. I appreciate your information, I downloaded Notifier and got to the point of above, needing to go to preferences in Mail. Mail will not let me go to preferences unless I give Mail an e-maill account to service. I do not want Mail to service an account. Mail is a nasty obtrusive program that wants to be in the driver's seat of my computer system. If I give Mail my gmail account set up again, using that italian program that also is a hack to my system, I will need to do that just to access Mail preferences so I can tell Mail that it is okay to use Gmail?
Something is fishy in Denmark to be sure.
I'm going to delete Notifier.app until I am able to see what gives with Mail.
Thanks, I thought that was going to be the answer. Mail has stopped me in my tracks again.
    OOoommmm..... (counting to 10)

Later post, I think this post has also taken it that I want to use Mail, Read my many statements, over a dozen by now, that I do not want to use Mail. I want to compose my outgoing mail in GMail. I want GMail to be my default mail program. I wan Apple Mail to Die! (at this point, that seems impossible to accomplish.)
It's simple, but I will repeat and repeat. I simply want to be able to click on a link, like a link in Craigslist to respond to an ad, and have the GMail compose e-mail come up ready to respond to the Craigslist ad.
    Ken
EVen more frustration now, I tried the notifier icon in the menu bar and selected compose mail and it tried to open up Apple Mail. How can I get rid of Apple Mail and let my system know that I want the GMail account to come up to compose my email in GMail (what I was trying to do with Yahoo until I got nowhere with Yahoo, now I'm trying to see if I can get GMail to work as my default mail program.

  • My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments anymore

Does anyone know why this would be happening?
My mac mail will not search mail anymore and doesn't load attachments most of the time.  When I enter some text in the search box no results come up and I know there are messages that contain the phrase that I've entered.
Also about 3 weeks ago attachments only get loaded about 1/4 of the way - if that.  So I have to log onto my web based mail program from the host and retrieve attachements or check the messgae with my iphone.
Please - does anyone know how to fix this?

I figureed out that spotlight was turned off via terminal -  I shut it off to unmount a disk (which didn't work anyways)
    sudo mdutil -a -i on
that's the termianl command to turn spotlight back on.  As far as my attachments not fully loading in mac mail on my iMac that still baffles me.

  • Mail will not send

Hi, I've had my iMac some time now but have only just set up the 'mail' option. I have definitely put in all of the correct details for all of my email accounts. I am able to receive email but it just will not send out any emails - from any of my 5 email accounts!
When I check the mail connection all is green (except for one of the outgoing servers for one particular email account). So why will it not send from the other outgoing server when it is green?! I use an iPhone and an iPad and my mail on those is fine (using exactly the same settings).
I have updated the software (as recommended by Apple for this particular problem) but it has made no difference. Every time I try to send it says 'Mail will not send with server...'
It's driving me crazy! Please help! Thanks.

This may not help, but a few months ago I was trying to send a message to members of my professional organization, but kept getting a similar message. I exchanged correspondence with Tech Help at my server to no avail. I thought the problem might have to do with the quantity of receoients, so I started deleting a few at a time from the list and resending. All of a sudden, it worked!
I finally narrowed it down to one address that had been preventing the message from going out. After I deleted and exactly retyped the address, I never had another problem. Never understood what had happened.

  • Mail will not send mail, only receive.

I have spent the majority of today re-installing OS X and all necessary updates, music, data after the death of a hard drive. Luckily everything went perfectly, except for the same problem I had with Mail even before the 1st hard drive died. Mail will not send mail, only receive.
All efforts time out and give me this message: "The connection to the server mail.earthlink.net on port 25 timed out"
Mail used to send messages, but stopped suddenly in 2004 and has yet to start again. Any idea guys?! I can't figure it out, under Account settings I have necessary fields filled in: Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is set to "mail.earthlink.net", Server Port is set to 25, and Authentication drop menu is set to None.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    --DANIEL

This is NOT a problem with Mail or OS X. This is an incorrect settings problem - garbage in = garbage out and this information is certainly available at Earthlink's website and Earthlink also provides technical support.
Earthlink has an authenticated SMTP server they changed to long ago.
    SMTP Server: smtpauth.earthlink.net
Server Port: 587 but 25 should work if you are using Earthlink as your internet service provider for connecting to the internet.
Use SSL: Off or not selected.
    Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response
User Name: Your ENTIRE Earthlink email address.
Password: The account's password - the same password used to check the incoming mail server for new messages.

  • HT5361 My mail will not "quit"

My mail program will not close out ( i have tried to shut down my coputer ).
The "quit mail" is not highlighled when I use the drop down menu.
I also can not pull my mail up, now.
    Any suggestions?

Force quit Mail by using command - option/alt - esc or by choosing Force Quit under the  menu.
In Finder, hold down the option/alt key while selecting Go from the Finder menu bar. Select Library. or select Go to Folder and paste in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Select Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.
    Information learned from Linc Davis.
You can make your user library permanently visible with the following Terminal Command.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

  • Yahoo! e-mails will not open?

A certain number of e-mails will not open in my Yahoo! Mail inbox using Mozilla Firefox. The page says done, and there's nothing there except a blank white screen. If I put the e-mail in trash and then try to open it, it usually works. This is very strange? I am a new Mozilla user and never experienced this with IE. I was guessing that maybe it's a firewall issue or similar, but would then guess it would have happened with IE?

  • Mail will not close how do I close mail so I can shutdown my iMac?

i just bought my first 27 inch imac a few weeks ago, I am a apple convert, today my mail will not close, the close mail tab is greyed out in to top task bar, and I tried to right click on the app and close that way but no go. is there yet a third way to shut down mail that I am not aware of as I can not turn off the imac until mail is closed, miss the force shutdown tab in pcs

Use cheng5543's suggestion first. You can also Force Quit applications by clicking the Apple symbol in the upper left of the screen and choosing Force Quit and then choose the app to Force Quit.

  • Mail will not stop fetching

I have 3 accounts set up in my Mail app. Two with Charter and the other is my work POP account. My work POP account will not stop fetching. Mail will not allow me to quit the program other than with a force quit. Is there a way to trash Mail preferences with out deleting the accounts? I have ran Disk Utility and used Cocktail to clean the cache files but it still hangs up.
I also got the new iPhone this weekend and unlike with my BlackBerry, if Mail is not working correctly on my laptop, then no mail is sent to my iPhone? I really don't understand that but I'm trying to address the first problem first then I tackle that issue.

Okay, I figured it out. The port number had gotten changed? I logged in to my work station to check the settings and they were different. Odd. I didn't change anything. I really don't monkey around with my computer much. However, we did update mail servers at my work and remember about 3 weeks ago it asked me something about the certificate so I wonder if my response made some sort of change. Oh well, live and learn. Now figure out my iPhone!

  • MAIL will not allow iCloud alias to receive mail

I am not a novice. I have been on iCloud (sadly) since July 2011. Today I tried to activate an email alias which was transferred into iCloud. It's valid and has been for years, but not activate since I migrated to iCloud.
Every time I set up the existing alias in MAIL I get the error "invalid incoming mail server."  I have used the Apple recomendation to use imap.mail.me.com.  When it comes time to exist ACCOUNT under Mail PREFERENCES, it will never SAVE changes as the incomding mail server information is grayed out and goes back to "example" and is not accessible.
I have also entered p99-imap.mail.me.com with the same result.
Two hours of going to icloud.com or managing my apple id online have brought exactly the same result.  Although the alias shows as activated under icloud.com and although it is accepted by MAIL, the message is always the same (invalid incoming mail server) and the account change can never be saved in MAIL.
    XXX
I have a business with MobileMe accounts and we are going to be forced to migrate to icloud in a few months. I have nightmares about it alraedy.
Since Apple doesn't give a good cr*p about this, I humbly ask if there is anyone who really knows what is going wrong and how to work around it?
Again: I migrated to icloud with my apple id in July 2011.  MAIL will NOT set up my icloud alias as it always grays out the incoming mail server and returns the error "invalid incoming mail server" and will not even allow me the save the information.
    Please help.
    Thank you.
    Mke

    Hi Roger
    Thank you for your suggestions.
I already have an ALIAS set up and receiving emails in my main INBOX under the alias name. It is a MobileMe alias from my separate business mac account.  It has worked as a separate "account" under MAIL for 10 years. It is an ALIAS, not a main identity mac account. The System Preference panel is ACCOUNTS, not aliases, so I use the word "account" when I speak of setting up a new inbox with a different name and password whether that is an iCloud alias or a gmail account.
We may be talking about the same thing but I'm not using a word you use.  I am allowed 3 icloud mail aliases. I am allowed 5 mail aliases under my business mac account. On my mac MAIL I already have three separate "accounts" or inboxes:  (1) my private mac ID account  (2) my business MAC account  (3) an alias from my business account. All three have different passwords. None of the three gets emails sent the other two "accounts."
Maybe I just don't get "icloud." I certainly got "MobileMe" in the past. The alias that is currently working as a separate "account" or "identity" under MAIL is proof of that.
I am going to delete the "alias account" from MAIL and call it a day. For me, iCloud is commensurate with Windows ME in the history of computing: a stupid change that resulted in nothing but aggravation for everybody who was dumb enough to sign up for it.  I won't be signing up for the next "big thing" from Apple. I'm sure there are tens of thousands of other users who feel equally "used" by Apple on this.
I'm marking the question ANSWERED and closing the thread.  iCloud is iCrap and nothing I've experienced with it in six months has changed that opion and the fact that you can get a gmail account operating in MAIL in 2 minutes but you can't get an iCloud email alias working in five hours is just more fuel on that bonfire.
Thank you again for your couresty and your time.  I doubt if my business account, which has to be downgraded to iCloud in a few months, will function at first and I doubt if the 10-year-old alias on that account will continue to function in MAIL.
    Mike

  • Mail will not synchronize

I have a new MBP and synced it with my old powerbook with firewire. For some reason Mail will not synchronize with my IMAP mac account's mail and will not let me rebuild the mailbox either.
I tried deleting the account on the laptop and starting all over but that does not work either.
    Any ideas?
    thanks JW

I am having trouble with Mail just ignoring messages for blocks of
time, or indefinitely. All e-mail is attempting to work with my work's
IMAP server. My MBP and our web based interface work well. My work
machine (Mac Pro, wired Ethernet) is the goofy one. It hangs out with
about 20 less e-mails in the inbox, and will skip receiving mail for
periods of time. Sometimes they show up as a bunch a few hours later,
    sometimes they do not.
For instance, MBP is showing three unread e-mails from the last hour,
the Mac Pro will not pick them up. It now has picked up an e-mail from
2:30, but not a few before the 2:30 email.
I have hit send and receive, Sych mailbox with server, rebuilt the
mailbox, deleted and replaced the account....all to no avail. I am at
a loss. If anyone has any ideas, it would be a huge help.
